A good manager 1. Gives direction a. He defines and sets objectives b. He gives each objective a time frame and a budget 2. Plans and Organises a. He breaks the objectives down into smaller tasks, matching the skills and capacity of the staff. b. He sequences the tasks. c. He determines the physical resources needed by the staff to execute the tasks, and he sets a time and a budget for each task. d. He organizes the staff into effective working groups around their special skills. e. He tells the staff what tasks they will do and how that makes up the objective 3. Measures results a. He creates systems for monitoring actual performance b. He measures results and compares the actual against the plans. c. He works out why there is a performance gap; not enough resources, resources wrongly used, poor planning and sequencing, staff skills inadequate. 4. Motivates staff a. He gives the staff clear guidelines for performance in terms of quality and time b. He rewards good performance; punishes bad performance 5. Develops people a. He sets high standards for performance and continuously raises the bar b. He tells staff what skills and competence is expected of them. If they do not have the required skills he arranges for training. c. He carries out regular performance ratings to identify gaps d. He arranges training to improve skills
