Setup And Track Facebook Campaigns With Free Tools There are 4 pieces of information that are required when setting up a Facebook ad. You’ll need the Destination URL, the Title, the Description and an image. With those pieces of info you can have a Facebook ad setup in less than a minute. However, if you want to employ any sort of tracking for your Facebook campaigns then a little (not a lot) of extra work needs to be done to get your Destination URL. In general, the Destination URL is the landing page that you want to send people to in order to pre-sell, or tell them about, your offer. But since we will be tracking our efforts then the Destination URL will be slightly different (but ultimately redirected to your landing page). The software that I will be showing you how to use for tracking is Prosper202 (you can download it here – it’s free). I will assume that you already have it installed. If you aren’t sure how to set it up or don’t have the time, I offer a professional install service for Prosper202 and I can get it running for you. I will also assume that you already have a landing page setup for your offer. And the rest of these instructions assume that you are setting up a Simple landing page (in essence, just displaying 1 offer on the page). The first step I use to getting my Destination URL for my Facebook ad is to determine what demographic, location, likes, etc. I will be targeting. Sure.. your offer may appeal to a very wide audience but segmenting it down will help you sort out the buyers from the browsers. You can (and probably should) segment to a very low level at some stage, but for now, and for the purposes of this document I will be keep it simple.

Setting Up Your Targeting Tracking Codes Generally when doing any sort of PPC tracking you can append a variable (or token) similar to {keyword} at the end of your destination URL and the PPC engine will automatically replace it with the actual keyword that triggered the click. It then passes the keyword to Prosper202 and it does it’s magic keeping track of all sorts of valuable data. For Facebook tracking there is no such token than can be used. But without the ability to pass anything over then tracking is fruitless. What I’m interested in, and I suspect you would be, is if (as a targeting example)… the males in Canada that are between 20 and 25, who specify in their profiles that they like “fishing”.. clicked my ad and bought the fishing course I am promoting… So, how do you jam that all into a keyword token to pass to the landing page and ultimately get processed by Prosper202? Well, you append that data statically is how. A decent way is to create a spreadsheet and come up with some sort of naming convention for your targeting. Perhaps use 001 for your first ad, 002 for your second an so on. Then describe the targeting for 001 in the field next to it. After launching your ad and running your reports at the affiliate network site, if you see a bunch of Sub IDs that show 001 that converted into sales (or leads), then you know the ad was a winner. I won’t get into specifics on how to determine “winners”, this is meant to just be a “how to” guide so I’ll try to stick to that. For our purposes you really only need to create one record in your spreadsheet for now. When starting out I keep it simple and usually just target a country and an interest and leave the rest at their max values, but it’s up to you how you proceed.

Check Out The Facebook Targeting Options In order to define your Facebook targeting options in your spreadsheet, you first have to know the options right? To do that, simply login to Facebook, scroll to the bottom and in the footer you will see a small ‘Advertising’ link.. click that. Click the green ‘Create an ad’ button (top right). Fill in some dummy values and click ‘Continue’ and check out the options available. Don’t forget to click the ‘Show Advanced Targeting Options’ link as well to see more. You can really “drill down” into target markets in Facebook.

Use Prosper202 To Track Your First Facebook Ad OK, you have Prosper202 installed right? If not, click here and see if I’m online, then I can probably get to it pretty quick for you. I’ve done it enough times and seen (and fixed) a lot of the issues that sometimes arise. Please don’t let anything technical stand in your way of getting your campaigns going on Facebook. It’s just $16 (at the time of this writing) for me to do the install. 1. Login to your Prosper202 account. 2. Click ‘Tracking202′ under ‘My Applications’ near the top right. 3. Click the ‘Setup’ tab (top left) and you should be at the ‘#1 PPC Accounts’ sub tab. 4. In the ‘PPC Network’ box type Facebook, then click the ‘Add’ button. 5. Choose ‘Facebook’ from the ‘PPC Network’ drop down list, then type your ‘Account Username’ below, then click the ‘Add’ button. 6. Click the ‘#2 Aff Networks’ sub tab. 7. Type in the ‘Affiliate Network’ that hosts the offer you plan to promote, then click the ‘Add’ button. 8. Click the ‘#3 Aff Campaigns’ sub tab. 9. Choose the ‘Affiliate Network’ that you just created, from the drop down box. 10. Give the Campaign a name. This doesn’t have to be ad specific yet, you’ll be using the same campaign that you are creating right now for all ads promoting the same thing. So give it a generic name like “Trout Fishing Course” or “Acai Berry Max Free Trial Offer”. Essentially whatever it is called at the affiliate network, use that name. 11. The ‘Affiliate URL’ in the next step is VERY important. Get this wrong and it may affect campaign tracking as well as you getting credited for the sale. Don’t get this wrong. Of course, use your unique affiliate URL that you received from the merchant site. Additionally, there has to be a spot for a Sub ID. It varies depending on the affiliate network, but it may be something like

&subid= in the URL querystring. Look for that and append [[subid]] before pasting it in the ‘Affiliate URL’ box. So you should end up with something like: http://example.com/? offerid=237&affid=094&subid=[[subid]]. Note: the example URL is completely random.. it’s just an example. Please check with your affiliate manager if you get stuck at this spot. 12. Enter your commission or payout in the ‘Payout $’ box. 13. Turn ‘Cloaking’ on unless you have a good reason not to. I have personally been banned from promoting a specific offer, one that I was doing very very well with on Facebook. Shortly after, the merchant was running MY ads on Facebook. Had I cloaked they wouldn’t have known my source. Sadly, you can’t always trust affiliate networks, their managers or the merchants. Not to say you should never trust them, just don’t assume they can be is all I’m saying. I always turn cloaking on now. This is really a global setting but you can essentially ignore it when it asks about cloaking in a later step. 14. Click the ‘Add’ button. 15. Click the ‘#4 Landing Pages’ sub tab. 16. Choose the ‘Aff Network’ and ‘Aff Campaign’ just created. 17. Give your landing page a nickname. 18. Enter the ‘Landing Page URL’.. the URL you may have used for your Destination URL had you not decided to setup tracking. 19. Click the ‘Add’ button. 20. Click the ‘#5 Text Ads’ sub tab. This is the step you might think you have to start at/repeat when generating new ads for tracking on Facebook. It really depends how you go about things. The only thing that I do different when creating new ads on Facebook is setup a new Targeting Tracking Code. Even if I decide to split test images but still target the same “group” I just create a new entry in the spreadsheet making note of the change in image. There’s a bunch of different ways to go about this, I just found this to be the easiest for me. With that said, the actual text you put in for the text ads at this step is largely irrelevant when doing it the way I do. 21. Choose the ‘Aff Network’ and ‘Aff Campaign’ just created. 22. Enter an ‘Ad Nickname’. 23. Fill in the rest of the boxes, again, it really doesn’t matter what you put in here, then click the ‘Add’ button. 24. Click the ‘#6 Get LP Code’ sub tab. For this step you will need to edit the HTML of your landing page. 25. Choose ‘Simple Landing Page’. 26. Choose the ‘Affiliate Network’ and ‘Campaign’ yet again. How To Setup And Track Facebook Ads

27. Choose the ‘Landing Page’ (nickname) that you just created, then click the ‘Generate Tracking Link’ button. 28. In the first box you will see a line of javascript code, paste that code just before the closing body tag in the HTML (or is it proper now to say XHTML) of your landing page (just the ONE page that you will be sending traffic to from Facebook). 29. Paste the contents from the next box of code into a blank text file and save it with a .php extension. What you call the file doesn’t much matter but make note of the file name. Use that file name in your landing page any time you link out to the offer that you are promoting. In other words, do not link out to your affiliate URL from your landing page anymore, link to the file that you just created. Prosper202 will record the necessary data and then redirect the visitor to the offer, post haste. 30. Click the ‘#7 Get Links’ sub tab. 31. Choose the ‘Affiliate Network’ and ‘Campaign’. Choose ‘Landing Page’ as the ‘Method of Promotion’. 32. Select the ‘Landing Page’ nickname from the drop down box. 33. Select the ‘Ad’ you created. 34. Choose ‘Facebook’ from the PPC Network list, then choose your Facebook Account name below that. 35. Choose your ‘Max CPC’. You may not know what that is yet and plus it will vary. I personally don’t look at that data later anyways so I just enter a value and move on. 36. Click the ‘Generate Tracking Link’ button. 37. Finally! The proverbial Destination URL we have worked so hard to build. Isn’t it a beaut? OK, it will end in “&t202kw=”, so for this first Destination URL, assuming you used the same naming convention as me for your Targeting Tracking Codes, append “001″ at the end so you end up with “&t202kw=001″. And for your next ad on Facebook, describe the targeting in the spreadsheet and use the EXACT same Destination URL except change the “001″ to “002″… and so on and so forth. 38. For ‘#8 Get Postback/Pixel’ there are several was to go about it. You see, when a conversion happens, the affiliate network has to provide that data to Prosper202 in some way for the last link in the chain (or the last piece of the puzzle maybe).. how it provides the data can be done in a variety of ways. Most methods are automated, plus there’s a manual way. You can just take a list of Sub IDs from the reports on the network, and paste them into Prosper202 and voila! That’s how I do it usually. Then there’s the postback codes and pixels… which are automated. I have never used them myself, I read that they aren’t always accurate so some data can be skewed. But if you decide to go this route check with How To Setup And Track Facebook Ads

your affiliate manager to see how to do it since it’s different across networks. Some networks let you paste the code right in your control panel and you don’t have to contact anyone to get involved. Also worth mentioning is Stats202.. another product by the Tracking202 team, which offers a more accurate (and automated) process for updating Prosper202 with the Sub IDs. Stats202 is not free however so it’s up to you if you want to go that route. I have never used it myself.

Creating Your Facebook Advertisement

1. Login to Facebook. 2. Scroll to the bottom and click the ‘Advertising’ link on the right side. 3. Click the green ‘Create an ad’ button from the top right. 4. Enter in the Destination URL generated from Prosper202 and be sure your Targeting Tracking Code is attached. 5. Enter a Title, Body Text and upload an Image. 6. Once your ad looks as cool as mine :) click ‘Continue’. 7. Choose your targeting options as defined in your spreadsheet for the particular Targeting Tracking Code you are working with. 8. Click ‘Continue’. 9. The rest is up to you.. I hope that you found this “how to” guide useful and that you make a BUNCH of money from running your Facebook campaigns.
