Not to mention that you probably put a good amount of money on your portrait collection and you want it to last as long as possible possible.

Cleaning your backdrop

There are all types of backdrops. Some are machine washable and some are not. Be sure that when you purchase a backdrops to check with the manufacturer if it is or isn't. All of the dyed and solid backdrops that we carry are machine washable. However, be aware that even if you purchase a backdrop that is washable that it should only be done on a rare occasion if it is absolutely necessary. As when you wash any cotton material often, the quicker it will wear out. If and when you wash your backdrop it should be done in cold water, with mild detergent, on a gentle cycle.

For those backdrops that are not machine washable you will need to spot clean it. Use a soft scrub s machine-washable brush and warm water with very little soap. You can soak the area if necessary, but do not ever use harsh or abrasive detergents. You may only make the spot worse.

Removing wrinkles an
Muslin is cotton and cotton wrinkles. But fortunately, the wrinkles are easy to work with. When you first get your new backdrop it will have creases in it from being shipped. The easiest thing to do is just to hang it on your stand or however you hang your muslins and let the wrinkles naturally fall out. This will ou take a few days, so if you are pressed for time you will need to use another method. Here are a few quicker options- Using small hand steamer will do a nice job. Or if you don't have a steamer you can just spritz the backdrop with a water bottle on the light mist setting. Or you can place your backdrop in a conventional dryer on a lower heat setting with a slightly damp towel.

Storage
Store your backdrops in an airy dry place. You do not want mildew or mold to grow on your backdrop. Yuck! Also, whether you backdrop is painted or dyed, the chemicals used during its manufacturing could begin to stink if stored too tightly or in a closed bag. So if you travel with you backdrops in a bag be sure to take the backdrop out and loosely store it in between you shoots. It's best to scrunch you muslin loosely rather than folding it. This will prevent patterned creases or folds that would need to be patterned smoothed before you session. Rather it will create random wrinkles that will add dimension to you backdrop if you choose to leave them. Or these loose wrinkles will fall out easily. Some photographers choose to store there backdrops on their backdrop support system. This is probably the best option. However it is not always practical.

By following these few steps in caring for you muslin backdrop you can increase the life and maintain the quality of your investment.
