HP StorageWorks for Microsoft Exchange Server 2010
Mastering business-optimized messaging through new levels of reliability and performance

For most businesses today, e-mail is the missioncritical communications tool that allows your people to collaborate and deliver business results. This greater reliance on e-mail has increased the number of messages sent and received, the variety of work getting done, and even the speed of business itself. Amid this change, employee expectations have also evolved; employees are looking for more efficient, always-on access—to e-mail, calendars, attachments, contacts, voicemail and more—no matter where they are, what time it may be, or what type of device they are using.

Delivering a messaging system that addresses these needs must of course be balanced against other requirements; organizations of every size need to maximize employee effectiveness, reduce costs and eliminate inefficient processes. Today’s uncertain economic climate demands critical decisions and changes in business strategy to stay ahead of challenges and seize emerging opportunities. HP StorageWorks for Microsoft® Exchange Server 2010 can help you run your business more efficiently, reduce costs and ultimately become more competitive.

HP has the experience, products and close relationship with Microsoft to make us the infrastructure partner of choice for Exchange Server 2010.

With new performance improvements and architectural changes from Microsoft on Exchange 2010, there are more deployment options and decisions. We believe that selecting the right storage requires careful consideration as part of your overall storage strategy. Choosing between DAS or SAN platforms for Exchange Server 2010 provides customers with a variety of options that can suit their business needs. HP products cover the spectrum of server, storage and management software technologies that can address both DAS and SAN deployments for Microsoft Exchange. The choice of technology should depend on these key factors: • Total cost of ownership (TCO) including capital costs, management, availability, administration, recoverability and capacity utilization • SAN infrastructure existence and maturity • IT strategy and organizational dynamics • Virtualization of Exchange Servers HP offers our customers both the expertise to determine which storage solution is right for you, and the product choice to provide either SAN or DAS based on that decision.

DAS or SAN for your Exchange 2010 deployment…you decide
Microsoft has optimized Exchange Server for the 64-bit Microsoft Windows® (x64) platform, meaning Exchange Server can take advantage of large memory models, significantly improving database caching, and consequently decreasing the overall disk I/O per second. This is beneficial for both direct attached storage (DAS) and storage area network (SAN) environments.

HP solution benefits at a glance
Choice of storage solutions The HP StorageWorks family of products provides a continuum of choice, from high-density, low-cost direct attach storage such as the HP StorageWorks 600 Modular Disk System (MDS600), through to easy-to-manage shared network storage such as the HP StorageWorks 2000 Modular Smart Array (MSA2000), LeftHand P4000, Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) and XP arrays providing enterprise solutions that reduce complexity, while improving messaging system responsiveness and reliability to increase productivity and lower costs. These options have been thoroughly tested in HP labs with Exchange 2010, with reference configurations and best practice supporting white papers available to ensure a smooth deployment. Breakthrough savings The HP StorageWorks MDS600 offers high-density, low-cost DAS for HP ProLiant or BladeSystem servers, combining the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of DAS without sacrificing flexibility or performance. Configurations start at less than U.S.D. $1/GB using only 5U of rack space. The HP StorageWorks MSA2000 SAS provides typical storage array hardware resiliency for all the features of a SAN at a lower DAS price point. Extreme flexibility For customers who wish to use SAN shared storage for higher levels of capacity utilization and management efficiency, the HP StorageWorks EVA provides a very flexible platform.

HP StorageWorks Business Copy EVA offers local business copy replication software to deliver higher availability and faster Exchange backup solutions, as well as remote replication with HP StorageWorks Continuous Access EVA and Cluster Extension software to implement multi-site disaster recovery solutions. Together with products such as the HP BladeSystem Matrix, HP BladeSystem and ProLiant servers, the HP StorageWorks EVA family supplements the modular, industry standardsbased architecture and increases storage utilization by up to 38 percent. The HP StorageWorks EVA brings the virtualization benefits of change readiness, energy savings and time efficiency. The HP LeftHand P4000 SAN provides a full-featured, highly available storage platform for mid-market to upper-mid-market companies, delivering a highly flexible, scalable storage environment that will grow organically as the messaging environment grows. Storage provisioning and replication are automated, eliminating the need for storage expertise to manage the environment. The HP LeftHand SAN is designed with no inherent bottlenecks, and can scale from 5–10 virtual machines to literally thousands without downtime or performance problems. HP StorageWorks products help customers quickly deploy and easily manage their virtualized Exchange deployments.
