Dear Parents, It has been quite some week in the High School at ISM! Last week ended with the brilliant HS Finale concert. We opened the IB Art Exhibition last Friday and then watched some amazing Films at our very own ISM Film Festival. This Saturday on the ES field sees the culmination of the annual “Battle of Bands” event. If High School rock bands are not for you then I can certainly recommend 100% Dance Co, next Wednesday, followed by the supremely sophisticated and trendy Tri M Jazz Night. It is absolutely incredible what we manage to accomplish and this is of course due to the tremendous partnership between the school and your talented and conscientious children. Last year at this time I made some brief comments about the amazing amount of activity that takes place at ISM. I would like to summarize some of these thoughts again below. “Given global economic conditions it is not uncommon to hear within various national systems of the education sector being in crises. Stories of financial cutbacks and budget tightening are common. Unfortunately in some national systems the axe often falls on perceived expensive “Arts” programs. I am always horrified when I hear these stories. Here at ISM we fully support the “whole child” and this means exposure to the full range of Fine and Performing Arts. We have an extraordinary Arts program and I believe that this teaches our students to be creative individuals who one day may well apply their creative thinking skills to some of the complex global issues that we face today. I feel very fortunate to work in a school environment that values the arts and promotes creativity. ISM is a richer place for it and our students are better students.” This week we finished our second round of MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) tests in English and Math for Grades 9. As you may remember, the MAP tests from the NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association – USA) provide us with helpful data about the instructional levels of our students. As was done in the first semester, the results of the MAP tests will be sent home in the coming weeks. Since this is the second round of tests, there will be the opportunity to compare data from the first part of the year and track areas of growth. The data from MAP will help to inform our instructional strategies and curriculum development. In the first week of May, Middle School English and Math teachers will participate in a workshop here at school about how to interpret and compare the data, and set goals for the future. For additional information about the MAP tests, you may visit the NWEA website at www.nwea.org for the Parent Toolkit. Next Friday will be a milestone for IB Diploma students in that it will be the last day of regular classes before their exams. I took the opportunity to speak with the senior class on Wednesday and I reassured them that most, but not all, the hard work has been done. They have been involved in a challenging program for two years and now they must stay the course for the final three weeks of their exams. I am convinced that they have been well prepared and will do well. Our College acceptances for this class have been beyond expectations. We are planning for a truly memorable Graduation on May 28th to celebrate the achievements of the class of 2010. I hope to see many of you at Graduation 2010! Kind regards,

William R. S Brown High School Principal

Michael Dickinson High School Assistant Principal

Battle of the Bands
International School Manila’s annual student-run Battle of the Bands (BOB) competition is in its eighth year. This year’s event has more participants than ever before; 15 Bands and 14 singers, and promises to be the most entertaining BOB yet! The Battle of the Bands committee is also working with the Philippine Community Fund (PCF) to raise funds for the construction of 10 permanent family homes for the people living in the Tondo on the “Smokey Mountain” dumpsite. Proceeds from ticket sales and our raffle will go towards achieving this goal. Tickets for the April 17 and 18 are P250 each. These two nights are the preliminary judging nights and will take place on ISM’s Middle School Field. Tickets for the night of April 24 are 350 pesos. This night is the Final night of competition and will take place on ISM’s Elementary Field. Note: Tickets this year are “Ballerbands” (rubber bracelets), and there are 3 different colors: yellow for day one, pink for day two, and blue for day three. “Baller-Band” tickets are on sale at lunch at ISM. While “Baller-Bands” are limited in number and only on sale during school hours, those who would like to attend the event can also purchase entry into the event upon arrival each night. The Battle of the Bands committee hopes you can attend!
