Hygiea Internationalis is the official journal of the International Network for the History of Public Health. It is a peer-review interdisciplinary journal, and encourages contributions from a wide range of fields. The focus of the journal is to promote, in the broadest sense, the study of the history of collective efforts for the improvement of the health of populations from antiquity to modernity with particular emphasis on the interdisciplinary analysis of the interaction between ideas on public health, organizations created to carry out these ideas, their implementation, and their social and demographic consequences.

CALL FOR PAPERS ON

DYNAMICS OF HEALTH AND WELFARE

DEADLINE – January 2nd, 2015

Hygiea Internationalis is the official journal of the International Network for the History of Public Health. It is
a peer-review interdisciplinary journal, and encourages contributions from a wide range of fields. The focus of
the journal is to promote, in the broadest sense, the study of the history of collective efforts for the improvement
of the health of populations from antiquity to modernity with particular emphasis on the interdisciplinary
analysis of the interaction between ideas on public health, organizations created to carry out these ideas, their
implementation, and their social and demographic consequences.
Hygiea Internationalis is an open access journal, published under the auspices of Linköping University
Electronic Press (LiU E-Press). All Authors always retain the copyright of their articles.
The journal itself will contain accepted articles, shorter pieces concerning sources, archives, etc. and, eventually,
book reviews.

This special issue will be published in the fall 2015 (Deadline: January 2
nd
2015). Both quantitative and
qualitative original researches are welcomed, as well as researches and theoretical studies that classify as below
may be eligible for publication: (1) Original Articles; (2) In-depth Reviews; (3) Cases Reports; (4) book
reviews

RATIONALE

Health and Welfare have been the focus of social sciences developing a strong corpus of knowledge regarding
the field. Interdisciplinary research has prolonged these efforts to comprehend how welfare states influence
societal structures and how health is shaped by these evolving dynamics.
Our aim is to put in perspective health issues from different theoretical backgrounds as well as empirical
settings, privileging interdisciplinary and/or comparative perspectives. Indeed, a dialogue among disciplines and
fieldwork can put into focus critical issues of welfare and health in globalized societies.
History, Anthropology, Sociology, Political science, Public health and other disciplines are welcomed to
collaborate. Original research articles, but also In-depth Reviews, Cases Reports, book reviews covering (but
not limited to) the following topics:

• Human rights, equality (or inequality) and health
• Reproductive health and gendered perspectives on health
• Mental health and disabilities
• Health and “minorities” (immigrants, GLBT community, etc.)
• Vulnerable populations and access to health
• Social participation and health
• Community health and wellbeing
• Social change, health and welfare
• Epidemics and infectious diseases
• Stigma and representations of illness
• Pharmaceutical, patents, markets and healthcare
• Ethics in health and welfare
• Technologies and health
• Diversity in health (alternative and/or traditional systems of care)
• Institutionalization and deinstitutionalization of healthcare
• Chronic disease, aging and dementia
• Psychosocial factors and health
• History of welfare states
• Social welfare policies
• National States, globalization and international health policies


NOTE: Original articles developed within master or doctoral studies in Erasmus Mundus programs will be
privileged, however current PhD candidates of the PHOENIX Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctoral Program on
Dynamics of Health and Welfare that submit articles must be aware that, if accepted by peer-review process,
published articles in Hygiea Internationalis could not be used as a contribution to a compilation of their thesis
within the program.
