ot only did we focus on spring romance this issue, but we also included a great deal of art editorial work. Our cover icon, Ashley Hinshaw, was so much fun to work with. She has three big movies out and is making her way through this competitive industry with her head set strong on her shoulders.
you don’t love it, don’t buy it. If it’s too tight, too big or just doesn’t fit right, don’t buy it. You may sometimes think: “ I can get away with this”…that just means it’s not right. My favorite things to wear include a pair of skinny jeans, a white tank (Hanes), and then dress it up with some cute shoes and jewelry. One cannot go wrong with that combo. I’ve learned a lot being in the fashion world, and the most important thing I can tell people is this: I’ve noticed lately that a lot of people are really be yourself, no matter what. Lastly, be comfortable focusing on self-empowerment, meditation and in you. really trying to become stronger individuals. I truly believe that you can’t be happy with your Hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed surroundings, including your loved ones, friends, creating it! coworkers and overall environment, until you are happy with your own person. You need to enjoy being around yourself before others can enjoy being around you. So if you find yourself unhappy, find the root cause and work on resolving it. Red Wine Chocolate
Cupcakes with Cream Cheese frosting
who doesn’t love a glass of red wine? now you can enjoy it in your cupcakes! follow this recipe for an amazing after dinner treat!
What you’ll need for 24 cupcakes (see frosting recipe below): • 1/2 C unsweetened cocoa powder • 5 oz. chocolate chips • 1/2 C boiling water • 2 sticks butter, room temperature • 1 1/2 C sugar • 4 large eggs • 1 1/4 C flour • 1 1/2 t baking powder • 1 t salt • 3/4 C red wine (I chose a Shiraz, which I think worked really well). Cream Cheese frosting: • 1/2 C butter, room temperature • Salt, pinch • 4 oz. cream cheese • 2 1/2-3 C confectioner sugar • 1 T vanilla
Red wine cupcakes with cream cheese frosting! Does it get any better than that? I’ve yet to come across any. These cupcakes are the tastiest I’ve made. They weren’t too difficult to make but if you attempt them I recommend wearing an apron because as we all know, red wine stains, and it’s easy to get carried away when using an electric mixer. The batter and wine is supposed to stay IN the bowl.

Awesome tip I learned from my mom: Use an ice cream scoop to spoon your batter into the cupcake papers. It is SO much easier than anything else I’ve tried! Pop those in the oven at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes and let cool.

In a heatproof bowl combine cocoa powder and chocolate chips and pour in the boiling water. Using a whisk, stir the chocolate until it’s all melted. In a larger bowl, cream the butter and sugar together. Then beat in each egg one at a time until they’re all mixed in. In a separate bowl combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Then slowly add that to the mixture making sure it’s all combined. Add some of the chocolate to the mixture, then some of the

Add the powdered sugar to the bowl about 1/2 C at at a time and beat to combine. Keep adding more until the frosting is at the consistency and sweetness-level that you desire. ith a US cosmetic market reaching close to $17.5 billion, plastic surgery is huge and not going out of style anytime soon. Chances are that you or one of your BFFs has already had or is thinking of having a rejuvenating procedure in the next five years. Statistics from the year 2010 shows that 91% of patients were women and approximately five million procedures (including both surgical and minimally invasive) were performed. The top five surgical procedures include breast augmentation, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, liposuction and tummy tuck. Any person is an educated consumer likely has done some personal
research to investigate the details of these surgeries, but do you know everything there is to know about them? Breast augmentation surgery began in 1962 with the first silicone-gel breast implant. A couple years later, the first saline breast implant was introduced by a company in France. When compared to the silicone variety, the saline-gel implants have demonstrated a higher likelihood of cosmetic side effects such as rippling or wrinkling; thus the now fifth generation silicone-gel breast implant is the preferred choice for both breast augmentation and reconstructive surgeries. Complications such as breast implant rupture, breast pain, skin wrinkling or unfavorable

Amongst the benefits of breast augmentation surgery are the aesthetic and mental health aspects. Most surveys following surgery indicate that women experience improvement in physical health, appearance, social life, selfconfidence, self-esteem and sexual functioning. Many women look forward to enjoying the pleasure of wearing clothes without having to support their breasts with pushup bras or showing off their bodies in bikinis that they couldn’t pull off before. Others just want to get rid of breast sagginess that has occurred over time either from weight loss, nursing babies or just getting older. No matter what the reason for the breast augmentation, one should always weigh the benefits vs. the risks mentioned above, including the cost of such surgeries. It is also a good idea to have at least a second or even third opinion depending on the area you live in and the accessibility to experienced board-certified plastic surgeons. Nose reshaping, or rhinoplasty, is a popular procedure that is used to address developmental (such as cleft lip and palate) or injury-related abnormalities (such as nasal fracture or blunt trauma) to the physical appearance of the nose. Closed, as opposed to open, rhinoplasty offers quicker recovery, decreased damage, less visible scarring, and less swelling after the procedure. Complications of rhinoplasty are of lower likelihood but may include post-operative bleeding, infection, scars that impact the breathing from airways, or accidental perforation of the nasal septum. Also, if too much of the nasal framework is removed, then it may have a negative consequence on the shape and stature of the nose. in a world reigned heavily by beauty, it’s without question that many people turn to plastic surgery to alter or enhance their appearance for various reasons. many relate plastic surgery to “real House Wife” stereotypes, much of which is due to the exploitation of the practice on television, however after speaking with dr. John diaz, renowned Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, i was able to find a much more appreciative outlook on his profession. By: Alyssa ramos

Graduating from Cornell University, Dr. Diaz attended the prestigious Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York with the intention of going into the field of cardiothoracic surgery. After his first year he aggressively sought an internship with a heart surgeon, however upon working alongside his mentor discovered that although he had tremendous respect and admiration for the field it was also very emotionally draining. He explains that what he hadn’t realized was how many families he would have to deliver bad news to and how often. In his second year of medical school he was burdened with the new idea of finding a different area of surgery that he was

interested in, and began looking into the many different types. Taking an internship at a hospital with a plastic surgeon, Diaz found his true passion. “I loved it so much, and thought it was so interesting because every day was so different. One day we would be reconstructing a breast cancer patient’s breast, and the next day a deformity in a child.”
Though excited about his newfound calling, Diaz considered the lengthy amount of time it would take to achieve his goal: four years of medical school and another Simultaneously working excessively five of surgical training, topped to be the best academically, Diaz

Most importantly, the Board of Medicine and the Board of Plastic Surgeons granted him the opportunity to do the accelerated program at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Says Gina, “It goes back to story, which I really like because it’s not this rap battle for $10,000 and all her problems are fixed. That’s not the way the world works. It just so happens that through her attempt to help the family her music gets out there a little bit.

arey Mulligan, Elizabeth Olsen, Jess Weixler… every year crowds at the Sundance Film Festival unofficially anoint a new “It” girl, and this year it’s Gina Rodriguez’ turn. NYU grad Rodriguez, a 27-year-old Puerto Rican from Chicago, headlines an all-star cast in the critical success “Filly Brown”. As Gina herself puts it, “’Filly Brown’ is awesome. I’m biased because my face is in every frame. Filly is a girl from East L.A. who is the matriarch of her family. Her mother is incarcerated, she’s got a single dad, she watches over her little sister and

It’s not like superstardom, but she’s found by an indie label, which exposes her to a bigger label, and everything comes crashing down because it’s built on lies and deception.” Regarding what she considers the heart of the picture’s familial core, she continues, “I don’t think a lot of critics have spoken about the psychology of [the film]. People we love, we somehow don’t see their flaws. Sometimes we don’t want to see them; sometimes we try to ignore them. The reviews will say, ‘Filly Brown is naïve’. I look at my father, who I love tremendously, and he has significant flaws and only now as an adult am I able to see them. When I was younger he was a god! I wonder what it is when we watch a movie - how we stop looking with our hearts.” Since the acceptance to Sundance, let alone the preceding

I don’t get it, I look at these people who do what they love every day and I’m like, how are you not on top of the world? I see life a little differently. I don’t know, maybe I don’t see life a little differently; maybe I’m completely out of my mind. I feel like the industry is dying for positivity, because people are so blown away that I’m like this. We don’t have to be jaded and negative and nasty; life is way too good for that. We should want to help each other out. We should want to change the world. We should want to use our money for good!” What truly keeps Gina going these days is the deserved recognition of her art. “That’s all I’ve ever really wanted. For me, this is all really
the teen hip-hop comedy “Go For It”, which released through Lionsgate On Demand. “Filly” came her way when its directors approached her upon the “Go For It” screening at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival. Through their interest, the help of friend Jesse Garcia (actor, “Quinceañera”) and just how impressed Gina was with the script - which she read in under an hour - the career-making role was hers. “I called [Jesse] back and I’m like, ‘Dude, love it!’ And he’s like, ‘You did not finish reading it that fast.’ A few days later Jesse got me an audition and that same night they pretty much offered me the role.” Gina performed spoken word during her time at NYU, but the rapping in “Filly” was a new undertaking. “It’s really interesting
because each article kind of changes it - they say something different, like that I trained for months. I did not train for months! I did not train at all! I wish I had trained for months; I probably would have been way better! I just literally threw myself in to the recording studio. I took the same approach to acting as I did to the music. Knowing exactly what the lyrics were - having my lines like butter - it was something I didn’t have to worry about. Any kind of research I might do for a script, I did for the music. I would watch other recording artists and pick up their little tips by seeing how far they stood from the mic or how they would annunciate certain things or what made them more comfortable - some wanted to be in the dark, some wanted full light. I did all the music before the shoot. I started recording December 5th and we started shooting January 3rd. “There were rappers who came on set and were like, “Your voice is dope, I want you to be on my song!” And I would go in to their studio and record with them and it would be an entirely different style of music. I’ve done rockabilly to hardcore gangsta rap. “After the movie was done I was in the studio re-recording all the songs, because at that point I was so much more confident on the microphone. Just like with black cinema, which outside Tyler Perry’s circle has seen difficulty garnering funding (I.E. Spike Lee’s would-have-been “Inside Man” sequel and alternative Sundance feature “Red Hook Summer” or George Lucas’ ultimately selffinanced “Red Tails”), distributors are afraid to pick up films they believe will limit their demographic. They claim to not know how to undertake mainstream marketing for non-whites behaving normally as opposed to stereotypically, for mere comic relief or in token wise elder roles. Though there are rumblings of an undisclosed group showing interest in “Filly”, no reports have yet announced the picture’s purchase.

Understanding both the situation’s financial and cultural aspects, Gina is passionate about shifting the mentality. She offers, “I think it’s a problem on both sides. I think we the Latino audience have done something that has given Hollywood a fear. We are 18% of the viewership, but we don’t watch our own movies. “‘A Better Life’, which is about a Mexican gardener - we all need to go see that! It’s the same with ‘Red Tails’. All black people, Latinos, and everybody should see that! “Until we unite, Hollywood’s not going to look at it any differently. And you can’t look at Hollywood and be like, ‘Oh, that’s just racist. You won’t pick up a Latino movie because you’re white.’ No, it’s money! They want a movie that’s gonna sell! Latinos need to start watching Latino movies so Hollywood can see we actually have a hunger for it! Our population is dying for this! We’re dying to see color on the screen, to see interracial relationships; we’re dying to see life! “It takes effort on both ends. It takes Hollywood to take a risk and realize the world is hungry for it, and it needs to be marketed correctly. My film ‘Go For It’, a hip-hop movie that happened to have all brown people, didn’t have one billboard or commercial. If people actually knew it existed, it may have done better. It’s a combination of so many things. “We need the world to unite and watch these movies because it matters! ‘Red Tails’, ‘Filly Brown’, they matter for our movement!
There’s a parting of the Red Sea that needs to happen where we see our faces on blockbuster movies because we’re good actors. I’m not the skinniest girl, I’m not the prettiest girl, but I can act my arse off! That’s what I do like it’s nobody’s business! I can do dramatic, I can do comedic; I want to work with Woody Allen and Quentin Tarantino! I want to be in Christopher Nolan’s next film! I should have been in “Inception”! But we’ve got to get out there and show the power on both ends. It’s not just one person’s fault. If we get Latinos to unite and Hollywood to take a risk, I think both ends would profit! Concerning “Filly Brown” specifically, Gina continues, “It’s funny, one critic was like, ‘They don’t even speak Spanish!’ Really? Do we have to? I grew up
in Chicago with English as my first language. I wanted to wear Abercrombie & Fitch in high school, and I wear J.Crew now! ‘Filly Brown’ is a third-generation Latino story about the kid who grew up like anybody else. It’s a normal story about chasing after your dreams and fighting for your family, it just happens that it’s done by a bunch of brown people. “It’s really important we get [the film] out there because there are a whole bunch of Latino kids - I know because I was one of them - who just want to see their story on screen, where it’s not like La Rasta, and there’s a flag, and there’s a rosary. anything to catapult more than my career, it’s that. I want to see a change. I want little Latina girls to know they don’t have to get pregnant at 16 because that’s not the reality anymore. “Let’s be honest - TV and movies and the Internet, that’s education nowadays. It sickens me, but let’s be real - when we were younger, we did not have a cell phone attached to our braid. I didn’t get a cell phone until I was in college! That needs to change, and it needs to be more reflective of what’s going on in the world. I want to be a role model for these little girls, because when I was growing up I sure didn’t have any. She’s on the right path - on the loaded docket for Gina is not only a yet-to-be-determined program on ABC (for which she hopes to “find the right match where I get to do something motivational and encouraging and nonstereotypical”), but also several films reuniting her with Michael
Olmos, Edward James Olmos or, as she calls him, “Eddie” - and her “Filly Brown” director Youssef Delara, respectively. Ever humble, she states, “They’re such brilliant directors; that they want to work with me again is such an honor.” For Delara, she’ll be starring alongside Dustin Hoffman’s son Max in “Snap”. For “Eddie” and Joe Young’s grandson Bobby she’ll get to sing in “This Little Spanish Town” (working title). Perhaps most thrillingly, with Michael Olmos’ film, “The Girl”, Gina will take on the lead as one of the greatest types of characters a movie can be about - a boxer. “The story means a lot to me because it’s her and her father and their rise to success together. My father is a referee for boxing; he was a championship boxer. You hear me talk about him a lot, because he’s a huge motivation in my life. He’s my best friend. He made me who I am. When I was younger he would whisper in my ear when I was sleeping, ‘You can be anything you want to be!’ And I would wake up and be like, ‘Dad! What are you doing! I’m in high school, you can’t do this!’ And he’d be like, ‘Go back to sleep. I’m talking to your subconscious, I’m not talking to you.’ “The Girl” and Gina Rodriguez coming together is an ideal coincidence, as the film will tread not only in to that history with her father but also her own past in the squared circle. “I started boxing when I was about three. I was so excited to show Michael these pictures of me where the gloves are as big as my whole body, and I’m just trying to hold up my arms because they’re so huge. And I get to share that with him and show him how much the story actually means to me. My father can be in the film as well - he can be the one that trains me - so I feel really blessed my father and I will be able to work together, doing what I love and doing what he loves. No matter what happens, Gina won’t soon forget Sundance. ”To

efinitive American auteur Alexander Payne’s (“About Schmidt”, “Sideways”) latest opus, the major Oscar contender “The Descendants”, has generated plenty of buzz for its performances, one of which almost goes unnoticed for the deceivingly natural way it blends in with the film’s Hawaiian environment. Up-and-comer Nick Krause (pronounced “Kr-ow-zee”) co-stars as Sid, a youthful surfer dude tagging along for what appears to be dubious moral support and mere comic relief before he imparts sobering insight in to his own background. Personally for Krause, the opportunity to work with Payne and A-list headliner George Clooney was indispensable. Professionally, the work’s success has sent his burgeoning star skyward through an exciting awards circuit and plenty of groundwork for a bright future. So what’s it like being part of one of the year’s hottest films?

It’s really exhilarating being a part of the awards rush, to be at all the events and just be a part of it all. Even more than that I’m just really glad I can be part of a project that I’m proud for people to see. What did you think of the hilariously ever-present Sid when you first read the script? I really liked the character. When I was reading Sid I was thinking how much
fun it would be to play him. Early on in the film he’s just such a prick! But I also like that you get to like him better later in the film - he has a full arc; he’s a well-rounded character. You spent time at Hawaiian high schools to research Sid’s personality. How do you feel Hawaiians might feel about your interpretation? I hope they find it accurate enough. I really tried

We would be hanging out whenever the camera wasn’t rolling and on weekend we’d go on hikes everywhere around the island. There’s so much to do on the island so I got to spend a lot of time with her. She’s to get the full picture in because Sid in to the most professional man in really cool, and on set she’s amazing is that classic Hawaiian teenager guy the world. His support on the set - to work with. but he’s also got that full story. leading guys, but “About Schmidt” is a totally different movie from “Sideways” and “Election”. They’re all great films in their own right. Which would you say shares the most in common with “The descendants”? Probably “About Schmidt”, because it follows the story of one guy who’s just kind of lost. It’s about all the people around him as well but it really follows his character through finding himself and his purpose in a new place. Which of the other Best picture nominees this year do you like best? “The Artist” is amazingly put together, but “The Help” has some great performances so I have to say it’s probably tied between those two.
klater’s upcoming “Boyhood”. The structure of that film is twelve ten-minute episodes, and what’s really interesting about it is that the whole project is being filmed over twelve years, so you get to see everyone age organically through the episodes. Each episode is a year of a boy’s life as he goes from first grade to his senior year in high school. I’ve been in two so far and it’s a really cool project. We get together for a few days out of the year and just do the next episode. do you have any other projects on the horizon? I have a lot of things lined up. I just moved out to L.A. six months ago, and it’s been one of those hit-the-ground-running sorts of things, so there’s going to be a lot of stuff in the near future.
in any film that really lets me get in to a character. One thing I love about acting is that you just get to crawl in to the labyrinthine mind of good characters. It’s just so much fun. Any film where I can really flesh something out and create an identity is a film I’d love to be a part of. i understand you’re also big in to the guitar - could you see pursuing anything there, as well? Maybe one day. Right now I’m really focusing on the acting, but I’ve always loved guitar. I still pick it up and play every day. I used to be part of this thing called the Paul Green School of Rock Music. It was a lot like the Jack Black movie, actually, where we’d go in for our music lessons and every week we’d get a show together - like a Led Zeppelin show or a Frank Zappa show. I’d love to be able to do that again.

The 23-year-old, six-pack-clad parker Young has found himself in an inarguably swell position - amongst an all-star, prime time cast on network television, frequently sans shirt. The sitcom in question, aBC’s “Suburgatory”, has recently been picked up for a “back nine” - a latter chunk for its successful first season. parker’s character may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but as the series progresses he’s proving well worth the watching through parker’s enthusiastic delivery and non-stop thrust-dancing. With “Suburgatory” as a platform, this performer with a trick or two up his sleeve (when he has sleeves to speak of, anyway) is priming to leap further in to the collective consciousness.
Tell me about the character you play on “Suburgatory”. I play a kid named Ryan Shay. He is the sports star, good-looking, rich, tan teenager. His downfall is that he is really just super dumb. He has a huge crush on the girl across the street, and he’s not used to girls saying “no”, yet here’s the first girl who really doesn’t care about him. She cares for more than the ripped abs and pearly white teeth. He sounds like a lot of fun to play, but is it difficult to reach ryan’s level? It scared me a lot at first. Originally when I auditioned for this role it wasn’t such a dumb character. He was just sort of your stereotypical jock - a cocky, arrogant football player. Before we shot the pilot I got the script and realized how dumb Ryan had become and it freaked me out, but it’s actually kind of liberating. As an actor it gives me the freedom to be a little wilder, which

is how the show’s progressed, and I think the character becomes more likable. I don’t think he’s “dumb”, I just think he has the intelligence of a six-year-old. He’s underdeveloped a bit, so he’s very naïve, innocent and playful, and he speaks his mind. I get to tap in to what it’s like to be a child again, when you don’t care that you’re shirtless, dancing and washing a car. It’s not difficult anymore.

Who would you say you spend the most time with? I think I’ve grown closest to Jeremy in a big brother/little brother sort of way. We have one big episode coming up and we were forced to spend a lot of time together. I really feel there’s a lot I can learn from him in particular. will hopefully grow, but I don’t know who started it up! I’m very appreciative of having an army. if your recent appearance on “The Late Late Show” proved anything, it’s your knack for keeping up with people like the wily Craig ferguson. do you have a history in improv? I didn’t take anything in particular. I took a class of ground rules that was kind of like an introduction course. I’ve done speech classes. I think it’s just being out here and having to deal with finding my way. I’m auditioning all the time and working, and I think you just kind of learn how to deal with people like… well, like Sisto and Tudyk [laughs]. I just tried to stay in [Ferguson’s] realm, and kept thinking in the back of my head, “Don’t let this get awkward!” That’s the best approach I can have - to just go have fun - because I was scared. It’s being me, not me hiding behind the mask of Ryan Shay. Craig came backstage right before I went on, gave me a hug and said, “Don’t f@#k this up!” Then he went right back onstage and said, “Our next guest is actor Parker Young!” Where do you see your career heading in the near future? An interesting thing about this business is always that you can never say with certainty what you’re going to do. It can be scary but it’s also part of what makes it fun. It’s part of the journey - you take it as it comes. Right now, “Suburgatory” has been

such a blessing and I hope to be a part of the show for some time. So for the immediate future, it’s that just being on this show with these people. I like doing television but ultimately I want to do films, you know? I don’t know exactly what kind of films. I don’t have my ideal film in my head right now, but last time someone asked me I said I wanted to do a “Mission: Impossible” sort of thing. I’ve always thought it would feel good to be a Jason Bourne or an Ethan Hunt. That would be such a fun project to tackle - something that’s super-active. We’ve got a long, unexpected career ahead of us so I’m sure I’ll have a few more identities down the line. You’re obviously in the shape for an action role. What does your fitness regimen entail? Yeah man, they’re trying to keep me shirtless on this show. I’ve always been active. I was the captain of my football team. Weight lifting and all that was always just a part of the game. I do whatever I can. When I moved out here I remained active my big thing now is a type of workout called CrossFit. It’s not a lot of plate pinches or arm curls; it’s more power cleans and rope climbs - that boot camp sort of feel. I love that. They kick my ass. Some guys take it way too seriously and they do something called the Paleo diet, which is eating as if you’re in the Paleolithic Era hunting and gathering. I just try to eat really clean.

tarting the show at the mere tween age of 14, Nathan says he had never really given too much thought to his personal style. He hadn’t been to any red carpet events yet, and didn’t particularly know what to wear; he just dressed like an average kid in tees and button-downs. “Being on ‘iCarly’ caused me to figure out what I enjoyed wearing”, Nathan says of his style decisions.
Growing up on a television show has made it easy for nathan Kress, supporting character of the hit nickelodeon show “iCarly”, to track the evolution of his style both onscreen and off. now five years in, nathan has gone from television shows to feature films and discusses how his style has changed. stray from the typical horizontal-striped Abercrombie & Fitch polo shirts that were selected for his wardrobe, and purposely tries not to wear them as a distinction between his character and his own individuality. Nathan finds this style to be very specific to his character, and once even saw a kid at a Halloween event dressed up like Freddie with the classic striped shirt. Now, however, as the show’s characters have matured, he’s been able to grow out of it.

He’s come to like the trend and thinks it one of his better style upgrades. “I had to get used to wearing slim fit recently because I noticed that when photos are taken, it just doesn’t look good.” Not only does Nathan get to wear all the mature Freddie’s clothing, he also has very cool stylists on the show who know his body type and the clothes that fit him best. This team has helped guide his fashion sensibility. started getting older his style followed the course of nature, going from layered sweatshirts to tighter, more form-fitting tees. Considering his new spot as one of the top male heartthrobs, the question arises as to whether Nathan’s heavily female fan base has any influence on what he wears. Nathan says it does have a little bit of influence, and that while he’s not particularly in tune with what girls like guys to wear he does get positive feedback on his and his character’s respective styles. he could choose a label he wanted to wear he’d pick Armani or Ted Baker, and that he usually wears a lot of Hugo Boss. “I try to remind people that I’m becoming a man, so I try to dress myself in more of a professional way.” As for that head of hair, Nathan says it has undergone several evolutions over the past two years. He says his first hairstyle was his biggest mistake; he had the whole top of his head in some sort of spiked afro that made it look gigantic. From there he went with the front flip, which then became more of a lifted comb-over look, but that was only because he was trying to grow his hair out and that was the only style that worked with the long hair. He then decided to cut it short and spike it out in the front. Recently, at the Australian Kids’ Choice Awards, his stylist told him she wanted to try something different. She cut his hair and used a bunch of products he had never seen before, and when he finally got to see it, he liked it a lot.

So now he’s combined the last two styles in a sort of combed-over and pieced look he says is an extension of the combination younger and older look. Now graduating over from television to movies, Nathan imparted that his recent character in the film “Game of Your Life” was very interesting to play because it involved a style he wasn’t used to at all. His character, Phillip, is a video gamer who wears nothing but black - a color that proved quite uncomfortable in the hot Atlanta summer weather in which the movie was filmed. He was, however, very excited when he got to wear a black vest in one of the final scenes. He admits the style took some getting used to but it was neat being involved in such a different project. As he’s been getting older, Nickelodeon has been aging up Nathan’s wardrobe, and those Australian Kids’ Choice Awards have had the most major affect on his style thus far. Nathan says he was styled with with jackets, and one he liked a lot was a grey trench coat from H&M that he felt dressed up anything underneath it. He said that award show affected him significantly, because it was the first time they really tried to age him up. On the red carpets he would be styled with nice jeans, a button-down and a nice blazer, which was the oldest he’s ever looked. He now wears a lot of jackets, and usually carries one around in his car just in case the warm California
weather takes a turn and gives him an excuse. When it comes to letting his extensive female fan base know his take on female styles, he said he’s not incredibly picky and respects a girl who is comfortable enough to wear a shirt and jeans and shoes - one who doesn’t have to hide behind any fancy clothes or labels… unless at a fancy event. Quickly remembering he’s talking to a fashion magazine, he charmingly adds that he has nothing against skirts and dresses, and also likes the “girly type stuff ” too. As with many guys, he also prefers less makeup and simpler looks, noting that less is always more. As his exciting career progresses, Nathan attests that it’s all with plenty of help and motivation from his fan base. He loves his fans and his whole experience with “iCarly” would be completely different without their support. He also says that thanks to Twitter, it’s really easy to have a personal connection with fans because it’s so easy to update, and he likes that people can feel closer to him and what’s going on in his life. He said he made a Twitter account at first to simply stay connected and follow people, and he now has about half a million followers.

Getting to speak with the South Florida style icons themselves, Jenna and Jamie of Hot Pink Style shared their style secrets and techniques that make them one of the hottest styling duos out there. From individualized make up looks to body-type styling, these girls know how to make everyone look extraordinary! For one of the first times ever, the princesses of style gave an exclusive interview,
giving us a sparkling peek into their diva lives. What got you into style initially? Were you always fashionable in school, or did you have any certain outside influences? Our mother was and still is our style icon. Growing up we spent most of our time in her lavish closets and dressing area; everything was always glamorous and decadent. How and when did you start your company? did you begin styling people and that grew into the company? We have been doing this our whole lives (we say jokingly). Since we were young we were immersed into fashion
and beauty and it always stuck with us! Our company, Hot Pink Style was officially born four years ago…this is what we were meant to do! What types of events/people do you style and where? Our repertoire includes styling for fashion editorials, music videos, movies and commercials. To our private cliental services we do red carpet events, personal shopping, and closet edits. What has been your greatest accomplishment, your favorite event, or favorite person to style? Its so funny because we would say all of clients and projects are, our favorite…we just absolutely love what we do!

What are you current favorite trends for clothing, hair, makeup and accessories? Jenna: For clothing, I’m kind of obsessed with sorbet colors right now, and putting them together with winter whites and metallic’s, or pairing them with bold colors. Accessories that I am totally in love with right now is jewelry designer Shiroiy D. Cama, they are just exquisite precious and semi precious oversized pieces that make such a bold statement. I also love Gleam by Melanie Mills. Jamie: I’m loving a dewy fresh face for spring; loving nudes and peach tones on eyes, lips, and cheeks and obsessed with nude gloss. don’t really love because we love all fashion! However, if we had to pick one we would both agree on, the “ Bad Cargo Capri Pant” that we see a lot of body styles wearing, and no matter what the body type is its just never a really flattering look. They seem to mostly be worn with a flat or sandal, which makes the cargo capri pant style even more frumpy. What are some of your golden rule style tips? Jamie: you shouldn’t wear something that you don’t feel gorgeous, confident, or amazing in, no matter what. Jenna: The right silhouette is key for your body, knowing what you want to highlight or disguise is so important. style?
Jamie: tights with everything, motorcycle boots, leather jackets, scarves, and hoops. Jenna: I always say a vintage piece... anything vintage is timeless and a never fail go-to.

ull of wit, charm, and beauty, Ashley Hinshaw gives a glimpse into her exciting and fast-moving life while being prepped for her Icon cover shoot. From childhood dreams to dreams come true, her journey has been something you’d expect to see in a movie. Ashley says she always wanted to be an actress while growing up in Indiana, and laughingly admits she’d always get animal roles such as Toto and a bird in “Alice in Wonderland”. She even played a tree, but that never discouraged her. She wanted to move to Los Angeles after high school to be discovered, and as fate would have it, a well-known New York fashion photographer Bruce Weber discovered her, leading Ashley to Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister ads. Ashley’s modeling career excelled rapidly, landing her in shoots all over the world. She even had an apartment in Paris because she was back and forth between there and New York so much. “It’s crazy; starting in January I had never left the United States, and by June I had been all over the world,” she observes. During her modeling career, Ashley admits that she was a lot more stylish in New York compared to the more laid back vibe of Los Angeles. She used to wear a lot of black in New York and Paris, but in Los Angeles she loves to perk up an outfit with color. She likes looks such as Odelin, Parker, Ir Le Vigne and Alexander Wang, which she finds simple with a

twist. Ashley also likes clothing that can be reinvented - clothing that’s versatile and comfortable. Ashley’s staple shoe is a suede boot, and her favorite boot designer is Elizabeth & James. In Los Angeles, Ashley rocks Converse, and says she is definitely not a fan of flip-flops. At the shoot Ashley wears a pair of worn flat leather boots she got from a movie she was in, keeping them because she liked them so much. In her makeup bag you would find Mac eye shadows, especially in natural neutral colors or a light purple. She’s also big on mascara, especially since she has blonde eyelashes, and loves her mascara by Dior. Recently she’s been getting into red lips, and admits that you definitely have to have the right mentality to wear it. She recounts, “I remember I wore red lips to the Teen Vogue party and was nervous at first; you definitely have to be bold to wear it.” As for those perfect blonde locks, Ashley says the hairstyles she’s trending toward now are the low ponytail, the fish tail, and the low braid, though she likes to change things up. She once dyed her hair red and loved it! Ashley says she loves modeling but wanted to act more than anything, and apparently destiny agreed. for a spot on the hit CW show, “Gossip Girl”. “It was so exciting, but I didn’t think I was going to get the part so I flew back to Los Angeles, and of course as soon as my phone got service when I landed I had a voicemail from my manager telling me not to leave New York and that I had gotten the part. I turned right back around.” Playing herself as a model as well as the notorious Chuck Bass’ love interest in the episode, Ashley recalls the cast being very friendly. It being her first major gig, Ashley admits to never having been around actors before but being very impressed by everyone’s sincerity. This was also her first time having a trailer. She playfully confesses to going camera crazy because she was so thrilled about it. Immediately after filming “Gossip Girl”, Ashley booked her second gig on “Fringe”. Everything happened so quickly, and in January of 2010 she moved to Los Angeles with no connections. She says that even though initially she would lose parts to bigger names, she was overly realistic, living in the moment, and extremely appreciative. Not being well known yet proved to have a bright side when it landed Ashley a role in the upcoming movie “LOL” featuring Miley Cyrus. Ashley says they were looking for someone lesser known to play Miley’s character’s best friend. Ashley says working
with Miley for her first big job was amazing yet intimidating, but that the star was very down to Earth and welcoming. Two weeks after finishing filming for “LOL”, Ashley was in South Africa filming the 21st Century Fox movie “Chronicle”. She claims it was probably her favorite to film because of the great location and cast. The movie follows three boys who accidentally obtain superpowers, using them for fun at first but eventually finding themselves in a whirlwind of predicaments. “Chronicle” hit theaters February 3rd. Next Ashley filmed the movie “Cherry”, set to debut in March and starring James Franco and Heather Graham. She plays an estranged prostitute, which she describes as interesting because it was the role furthest from her and a great opportunity to take a journey away from herself. Privy to my prying for juicy details about getting to make out with James Franco on screen, she laughed and told me he’s a great actor who gets very into his character. As her dream of acting rapidly turns into an amazing reality, Ashley is so busy with acting that now that she only models as an actress, which she likes because now she’s “not just a clothes hanger”.
In her downtime, Ashley enjoys hanging out in Santa Barbara. She’s big on antiquing and collecting weird things no one needs. One of her specific hobbies is collecting antique picture frames in which she displays artwork her ten-year-old goddaughter sends by mail. After such an amazing year, Ashley is excited and ready for her career as an actress, and shows truly genuine appreciation and gratitude for all of the opportunities that have presented themselves to her.

ot only did we focus on spring romance this issue, but we also included a great deal of art editorial work. Our cover icon, Ashley Hinshaw, was so much fun to work with. She has three big movies out and is making her way through this competitive industry with her head set strong on her shoulders.

My favorite things to wear include a pair of skinny jeans, a white tank (Hanes), and then dress it up with some cute shoes and jewelry. One cannot go wrong with that combo. I’ve learned a lot being in the fashion world, and the most important thing I can tell people is this: I’ve noticed lately that a lot of people are really be yourself, no matter what. Lastly, be comfortable focusing on self-empowerment, meditation and in you. really trying to become stronger individuals. Cupcakes with Cream Cheese frosting
who doesn’t love a glass of red wine? now you can enjoy it in your cupcakes! follow this recipe for an amazing after dinner treat!
What you’ll need for 24 cupcakes (see frosting recipe below): • 1/2 C unsweetened cocoa powder • 5 oz. chocolate chips • 1/2 C boiling water • 2 sticks butter, room temperature • 1 1/2 C sugar • 4 large eggs • 1 1/4 C flour • 1 1/2 t baking powder • 1 t salt • 3/4 C red wine (I chose a Shiraz, which I think worked really well). Cream Cheese frosting: • 1/2 C butter, room temperature • Salt, pinch • 4 oz. cream cheese • 2 1/2-3 C confectioner sugar • 1 T vanilla
Red wine cupcakes with cream cheese frosting! Does it get any better than that? I’ve yet to come across any. These cupcakes are the tastiest I’ve made. They weren’t too difficult to make but if you attempt them I recommend wearing an apron because as we all know, red wine stains, and it’s easy to get carried away when using an electric mixer. The batter and wine is supposed to stay IN the bowl.

Awesome tip I learned from my mom: Use an ice cream scoop to spoon your batter into the cupcake papers. It is SO much easier than anything else I’ve tried! Pop those in the oven at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes and let cool.

In a heatproof bowl combine cocoa powder and chocolate chips and pour in the boiling water. Using a whisk, stir the chocolate until it’s all melted. In a larger bowl, cream the butter and sugar together. Then beat in each egg one at a time until they’re all mixed in. In a separate bowl combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Then slowly add that to the mixture making sure it’s all combined. Add some of the chocolate to the mixture, then some of the

Add the powdered sugar to the bowl about 1/2 C at at a time and beat to combine. Keep adding more until the frosting is at the consistency and sweetness-level that you desire. ith a US cosmetic market reaching close to $17.5 billion, plastic surgery is huge and not going out of style anytime soon. Chances are that you or one of your BFFs has already had or is thinking of having a rejuvenating procedure in the next five years. Statistics from the year 2010 shows that 91% of patients were women and approximately five million procedures (including both surgical and minimally invasive) were performed. The top five surgical procedures include breast augmentation, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, liposuction and tummy tuck. Any person is an educated consumer likely has done some personal
research to investigate the details of these surgeries, but do you know everything there is to know about them? Breast augmentation surgery began in 1962 with the first silicone-gel breast implant. A couple years later, the first saline breast implant was introduced by a company in France. When compared to the silicone variety, the saline-gel implants have demonstrated a higher likelihood of cosmetic side effects such as rippling or wrinkling; thus the now fifth generation silicone-gel breast implant is the preferred choice for both breast augmentation and reconstructive surgeries. Complications such as breast implant rupture, breast pain, skin wrinkling or unfavorable

Amongst the benefits of breast augmentation surgery are the aesthetic and mental health aspects. Most surveys following surgery indicate that women experience improvement in physical health, appearance, social life, selfconfidence, self-esteem and sexual functioning. Many women look forward to enjoying the pleasure of wearing clothes without having to support their breasts with pushup bras or showing off their bodies in bikinis that they couldn’t pull off before. Others just want to get rid of breast sagginess that has occurred over time either from weight loss, nursing babies or just getting older. No matter what the reason for the breast augmentation, one should always weigh the benefits vs. the risks mentioned above, including the cost of such surgeries. It is also a good idea to have at least a second or even third opinion depending on the area you live in and the accessibility to experienced board-certified plastic surgeons. Nose reshaping, or rhinoplasty, is a popular procedure that is used to address developmental (such as cleft lip and palate) or injury-related abnormalities (such as nasal fracture or blunt trauma) to the physical appearance of the nose. Closed, as opposed to open, rhinoplasty offers quicker recovery, decreased damage, less visible scarring, and less swelling after the procedure. Complications of rhinoplasty are of lower likelihood but may include post-operative bleeding, infection, scars that impact the breathing from airways, or accidental perforation of the nasal septum. Also, if too much of the nasal framework is removed, then it may have a negative consequence on the shape and stature of the nose. in a world reigned heavily by beauty, it’s without question that many people turn to plastic surgery to alter or enhance their appearance for various reasons. many relate plastic surgery to “real House Wife” stereotypes, much of which is due to the exploitation of the practice on television, however after speaking with dr. John diaz, renowned Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, i was able to find a much more appreciative outlook on his profession. By: Alyssa ramos

Graduating from Cornell University, Dr. Diaz attended the prestigious Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York with the intention of going into the field of cardiothoracic surgery. After his first year he aggressively sought an internship with a heart surgeon, however upon working alongside his mentor discovered that although he had tremendous respect and admiration for the field it was also very emotionally draining. He explains that what he hadn’t realized was how many families he would have to deliver bad news to and how often. In his second year of medical school he was burdened with the new idea of finding a different area of surgery that he was

interested in, and began looking into the many different types. Taking an internship at a hospital with a plastic surgeon, Diaz found his true passion. “I loved it so much, and thought it was so interesting because every day was so different. One day we would be reconstructing a breast cancer patient’s breast, and the next day a deformity in a child.”

I’m biased because my face is in every frame. Filly is a girl from East L.A. who is the matriarch of her family. Her mother is incarcerated, she’s got a single dad, she watches over her little sister and

It’s not like superstardom, but she’s found by an indie label, which exposes her to a bigger label, and everything comes crashing down because it’s built on lies and deception.” Regarding what she considers the heart of the picture’s familial core, she continues, “I don’t think a lot of critics have spoken about the psychology of [the film]. People we love, we somehow don’t see their flaws. Sometimes we don’t want to see them; sometimes we try to ignore them. The reviews will say, ‘Filly Brown is naïve’. I look at my father, who I love tremendously, and he has significant flaws and only now as an adult am I able to see them. When I was younger he was a god! I wonder what it is when we watch a movie - how we stop looking with our hearts.” Since the acceptance to Sundance, let alone the preceding

opportunity to work on the film alongside Lou Diamond Phillips, Emilio Rivera, Jenni Rivera and the legendary Edward James Olmos, all of whom she was inspirationally welcomed by, Gina’s life has hit the fast track. “Things have propelled rather quickly, and the people around me suddenly think I’m famous and rich which is hysterical because I’m neither. And I love avocado sandwiches! “It’s really interesting to parallel the film with what’s going on in my life and what would go on in anybody’s life when you get kneedeep in the industry and you can be changed, morphed and molded in to something that’s not you. And when it’s not you, how lasting is it, really?”

glass-half-full. Everyone says, ‘Stay like that, because you’re gonna get jaded!’ Why? I don’t get it, I look at these people who do what they love every day and I’m like, how are you not on top of the world? I see life a little differently. I don’t know, maybe I don’t see life a little differently; maybe I’m completely out of my mind. I feel like the industry is dying for positivity, because people are so blown away that I’m like this. We don’t have to be jaded and negative and nasty; life is way too good for that. We should want to help each other out. We should want to change the world. We should want to use our money for good!” What truly keeps Gina going these days is the deserved recognition of her art. “That’s all I’ve ever really wanted. For me, this is all really
the teen hip-hop comedy “Go For It”, which released through Lionsgate On Demand. “Filly” came her way when its directors approached her upon the “Go For It” screening at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival. Through their interest, the help of friend Jesse Garcia (actor, “Quinceañera”) and just how impressed Gina was with the script - which she read in under an hour - the career-making role was hers. “I called [Jesse] back and I’m like, ‘Dude, love it!’ And he’s like, ‘You did not finish reading it that fast.’ A few days later Jesse got me an audition and that same night they pretty much offered me the role.” Gina performed spoken word during her time at NYU, but the rapping in “Filly” was a new undertaking. “It’s really interesting
because each article kind of changes it - they say something different, like that I trained for months. I did not train for months! I did not train at all! I wish I had trained for months; I probably would have been way better! I just literally threw myself in to the recording studio. I took the same approach to acting as I did to the music. Knowing exactly what the lyrics were - having my lines like butter - it was something I didn’t have to worry about. Any kind of research I might do for a script, I did for the music. I would watch other recording artists and pick up their little tips by seeing how far they stood from the mic or how they would annunciate certain things or what made them more comfortable - some wanted to be in the dark, some wanted full light. I did all the music before the shoot. I started recording December 5th and we started shooting January 3rd. “There were rappers who came on set and were like, “Your voice is dope, I want you to be on my song!” And I would go in to their studio and record with them and it would be an entirely different style of music. I’ve done rockabilly to hardcore gangsta rap. “After the movie was done I was in the studio re-recording all the songs, because at that point I was so much more confident on the microphone. Just like with black cinema, which outside Tyler Perry’s circle has seen difficulty garnering funding (I.E. Spike Lee’s would-have-been “Inside Man” sequel and alternative Sundance feature “Red Hook Summer” or George Lucas’ ultimately selffinanced “Red Tails”), distributors are afraid to pick up films they believe will limit their demographic. They claim to not know how to undertake mainstream marketing for non-whites behaving normally as opposed to stereotypically, for mere comic relief or in token wise elder roles. Though there are rumblings of an undisclosed group showing interest in “Filly”, no reports have yet announced the picture’s purchase.

Understanding both the situation’s financial and cultural aspects, Gina is passionate about shifting the mentality. She offers, “I think it’s a problem on both sides. I think we the Latino audience have done something that has given Hollywood a fear. We are 18% of the viewership, but we don’t watch our own movies. “‘A Better Life’, which is about a Mexican gardener - we all need to go see that! It’s the same with ‘Red Tails’. All black people, Latinos, and everybody should see that! “Until we unite, Hollywood’s not going to look at it any differently. And you can’t look at Hollywood and be like, ‘Oh, that’s just racist. You won’t pick up a Latino movie because you’re white.’ No, it’s money! They want a movie that’s gonna sell! Latinos need to start watching Latino movies so Hollywood can see we actually have a hunger for it! Our population is dying for this! We’re dying to see color on the screen, to see interracial relationships; we’re dying to see life! “It takes effort on both ends. It takes Hollywood to take a risk and realize the world is hungry for it, and it needs to be marketed correctly. My film ‘Go For It’, a hip-hop movie that happened to have all brown people, didn’t have one billboard or commercial. If people actually knew it existed, it may have done better. It’s a combination of so many things. “We need the world to unite and watch these movies because it matters! ‘Red Tails’, ‘Filly Brown’, they matter for our movement!
There’s a parting of the Red Sea that needs to happen where we see our faces on blockbuster movies because we’re good actors. I’m not the skinniest girl, I’m not the prettiest girl, but I can act my arse off! That’s what I do like it’s nobody’s business! I can do dramatic, I can do comedic; I want to work with Woody Allen and Quentin Tarantino! I want to be in Christopher Nolan’s next film! I should have been in “Inception”! But we’ve got to get out there and show the power on both ends. It’s not just one person’s fault. If we get Latinos to unite and Hollywood to take a risk, I think both ends would profit! Concerning “Filly Brown” specifically, Gina continues, “It’s funny, one critic was like, ‘They don’t even speak Spanish!’ Really? Do we have to? I grew up
in Chicago with English as my first language. I wanted to wear Abercrombie & Fitch in high school, and I wear J.Crew now! ‘Filly Brown’ is a third-generation Latino story about the kid who grew up like anybody else. It’s a normal story about chasing after your dreams and fighting for your family, it just happens that it’s done by a bunch of brown people. “It’s really important we get [the film] out there because there are a whole bunch of Latino kids - I know because I was one of them - who just want to see their story on screen, where it’s not like La Rasta, and there’s a flag, and there’s a rosary. anything to catapult more than my career, it’s that. I want to see a change. I want little Latina girls to know they don’t have to get pregnant at 16 because that’s not the reality anymore. “Let’s be honest - TV and movies and the Internet, that’s education nowadays. It sickens me, but let’s be real - when we were younger, we did not have a cell phone attached to our braid. I didn’t get a cell phone until I was in college! That needs to change, and it needs to be more reflective of what’s going on in the world. I want to be a role model for these little girls, because when I was growing up I sure didn’t have any. She’s on the right path - on the loaded docket for Gina is not only a yet-to-be-determined program on ABC (for which she hopes to “find the right match where I get to do something motivational and encouraging and nonstereotypical”), but also several films reuniting her with Michael
Olmos, Edward James Olmos or, as she calls him, “Eddie” - and her “Filly Brown” director Youssef Delara, respectively. Ever humble, she states, “They’re such brilliant directors; that they want to work with me again is such an honor.” For Delara, she’ll be starring alongside Dustin Hoffman’s son Max in “Snap”. For “Eddie” and Joe Young’s grandson Bobby she’ll get to sing in “This Little Spanish Town” (working title). Perhaps most thrillingly, with Michael Olmos’ film, “The Girl”, Gina will take on the lead as one of the greatest types of characters a movie can be about - a boxer. “The story means a lot to me because it’s her and her father and their rise to success together. My father is a referee for boxing; he was a championship boxer. You hear me talk about him a lot, because he’s a huge motivation in my life. He’s my best friend. He made me who I am. When I was younger he would whisper in my ear when I was sleeping, ‘You can be anything you want to be!’ And I would wake up and be like, ‘Dad! What are you doing! I’m in high school, you can’t do this!’ And he’d be like, ‘Go back to sleep. I’m talking to your subconscious, I’m not talking to you.’ “The Girl” and Gina Rodriguez coming together is an ideal coincidence, as the film will tread not only in to that history with her father but also her own past in the squared circle. “I started boxing when I was about three. I was so excited to show Michael these pictures of me where the gloves are as big as my whole body, and I’m just trying to hold up my arms because they’re so huge. And I get to share that with him and show him how much the story actually means to me. My father can be in the film as well - he can be the one that trains me - so I feel really blessed my father and I will be able to work together, doing what I love and doing what he loves. No matter what happens, Gina won’t soon forget Sundance. ”To

Talking “The descendants” with actor nick Krause

efinitive American auteur Alexander Payne’s (“About Schmidt”, “Sideways”) latest opus, the major Oscar contender “The Descendants”, has generated plenty of buzz for its performances, one of which almost goes unnoticed for the deceivingly natural way it blends in with the film’s Hawaiian environment. Up-and-comer Nick Krause (pronounced “Kr-ow-zee”) co-stars as Sid, a youthful surfer dude tagging along for what appears to be dubious moral support and mere comic relief before he imparts sobering insight in to his own background. Personally for Krause, the opportunity to work with Payne and A-list headliner George Clooney was indispensable. Professionally, the work’s success has sent his burgeoning star skyward through an exciting awards circuit and plenty of groundwork for a bright future. So what’s it like being part of one of the year’s hottest films?

It’s really exhilarating being a part of the awards rush, to be at all the events and just be a part of it all. Even more than that I’m just really glad I can be part of a project that I’m proud for people to see. What did you think of the hilariously ever-present Sid when you first read the script? I really liked the character. When I was reading Sid I was thinking how much
fun it would be to play him. Early on in the film he’s just such a prick! But I also like that you get to like him better later in the film - he has a full arc; he’s a well-rounded character. You spent time at Hawaiian high schools to research Sid’s personality. How do you feel Hawaiians might feel about your interpretation? I hope they find it accurate enough. I really tried

another breakout star in the film is Shailene Woodley - what was your experience working with her? Really awesome; Shai and I got to be pretty good friends on the set. We would be hanging out whenever the camera wasn’t rolling and on weekend we’d go on hikes everywhere around the island. There’s so much to do on the island so I got to spend a lot of time with her. She’s to get the full picture in because Sid in to the most professional man in really cool, and on set she’s amazing is that classic Hawaiian teenager guy the world. His support on the set - to work with. but he’s also got that full story. leading guys, but “About Schmidt” is a totally different movie from “Sideways” and “Election”. They’re all great films in their own right. Which would you say shares the most in common with “The descendants”? Probably “About Schmidt”, because it follows the story of one guy who’s just kind of lost. It’s about all the people around him as well but it really follows his character through finding himself and his purpose in a new place. Which of the other Best picture nominees this year do you like best? “The Artist” is amazingly put together, but “The Help” has some great performances so I have to say it’s probably tied between those two.
klater’s upcoming “Boyhood”. The structure of that film is twelve ten-minute episodes, and what’s really interesting about it is that the whole project is being filmed over twelve years, so you get to see everyone age organically through the episodes. Each episode is a year of a boy’s life as he goes from first grade to his senior year in high school. I’ve been in two so far and it’s a really cool project. We get together for a few days out of the year and just do the next episode. do you have any other projects on the horizon? I have a lot of things lined up. I just moved out to L.A. six months ago, and it’s been one of those hit-the-ground-running sorts of things, so there’s going to be a lot of stuff in the near future.
in any film that really lets me get in to a character. One thing I love about acting is that you just get to crawl in to the labyrinthine mind of good characters. It’s just so much fun. Any film where I can really flesh something out and create an identity is a film I’d love to be a part of. i understand you’re also big in to the guitar - could you see pursuing anything there, as well? Maybe one day. Right now I’m really focusing on the acting, but I’ve always loved guitar. I still pick it up and play every day. I used to be part of this thing called the Paul Green School of Rock Music. It was a lot like the Jack Black movie, actually, where we’d go in for our music lessons and every week we’d get a show together - like a Led Zeppelin show or a Frank Zappa show. I’d love to be able to do that again.

The 23-year-old, six-pack-clad parker Young has found himself in an inarguably swell position - amongst an all-star, prime time cast on network television, frequently sans shirt. The sitcom in question, aBC’s “Suburgatory”, has recently been picked up for a “back nine” - a latter chunk for its successful first season. parker’s character may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but as the series progresses he’s proving well worth the watching through parker’s enthusiastic delivery and non-stop thrust-dancing. With “Suburgatory” as a platform, this performer with a trick or two up his sleeve (when he has sleeves to speak of, anyway) is priming to leap further in to the collective consciousness.
Tell me about the character you play on “Suburgatory”. I play a kid named Ryan Shay. He is the sports star, good-looking, rich, tan teenager. His downfall is that he is really just super dumb. He has a huge crush on the girl across the street, and he’s not used to girls saying “no”, yet here’s the first girl who really doesn’t care about him. She cares for more than the ripped abs and pearly white teeth. He sounds like a lot of fun to play, but is it difficult to reach ryan’s level? It scared me a lot at first. Originally when I auditioned for this role it wasn’t such a dumb character. He was just sort of your stereotypical jock - a cocky, arrogant football player. Before we shot the pilot I got the script and realized how dumb Ryan had become and it freaked me out, but it’s actually kind of liberating. As an actor it gives me the freedom to be a little wilder, which

is how the show’s progressed, and I think the character becomes more likable. I don’t think he’s “dumb”, I just think he has the intelligence of a six-year-old. He’s underdeveloped a bit, so he’s very naïve, innocent and playful, and he speaks his mind. I get to tap in to what it’s like to be a child again, when you don’t care that you’re shirtless, dancing and washing a car. It’s not difficult anymore.

Who would you say you spend the most time with? I think I’ve grown closest to Jeremy in a big brother/little brother sort of way. We have one big episode coming up and we were forced to spend a lot of time together. I really feel there’s a lot I can learn from him in particular. He’s kinda taken me under his wing, Let’s hear about that dancing. which he does in the episode so that’s is it scripted? Originally one of translated in to life to some extent. the scenes was supposed to be me jumping out of a car and flipping off alicia Silverstone has been my sister, but it just kinda morphed cast as a love interest for in to dancing instead [laughs]. I’m very appreciative of having an army. if your recent appearance on “The Late Late Show” proved anything, it’s your knack for keeping up with people like the wily Craig ferguson. do you have a history in improv? I didn’t take anything in particular. I took a class of ground rules that was kind of like an introduction course. I’ve done speech classes. I think it’s just being out here and having to deal with finding my way. I’m auditioning all the time and working, and I think you just kind of learn how to deal with people like… well, like Sisto and Tudyk [laughs]. I just tried to stay in [Ferguson’s] realm, and kept thinking in the back of my head, “Don’t let this get awkward!” That’s the best approach I can have - to just go have fun - because I was scared. It’s being me, not me hiding behind the mask of Ryan Shay. Craig came backstage right before I went on, gave me a hug and said, “Don’t f@#k this up!” Then he went right back onstage and said, “Our next guest is actor Parker Young!” Where do you see your career heading in the near future? An interesting thing about this business is always that you can never say with certainty what you’re going to do. It can be scary but it’s also part of what makes it fun. It’s part of the journey - you take it as it comes. Right now, “Suburgatory” has been

such a blessing and I hope to be a part of the show for some time. So for the immediate future, it’s that just being on this show with these people. I like doing television but ultimately I want to do films, you know? I don’t know exactly what kind of films. I don’t have my ideal film in my head right now, but last time someone asked me I said I wanted to do a “Mission: Impossible” sort of thing. I’ve always thought it would feel good to be a Jason Bourne or an Ethan Hunt. That would be such a fun project to tackle - something that’s super-active. We’ve got a long, unexpected career ahead of us so I’m sure I’ll have a few more identities down the line. You’re obviously in the shape for an action role. What does your fitness regimen entail? Yeah man, they’re trying to keep me shirtless on this show. I’ve always been active. I was the captain of my football team. Weight lifting and all that was always just a part of the game. I do whatever I can. When I moved out here I remained active my big thing now is a type of workout called CrossFit. It’s not a lot of plate pinches or arm curls; it’s more power cleans and rope climbs - that boot camp sort of feel. I love that. They kick my ass. Some guys take it way too seriously and they do something called the Paleo diet, which is eating as if you’re in the Paleolithic Era hunting and gathering. I just try to eat really clean.

Growing up on a television show has made it easy for nathan Kress, supporting character of the hit nickelodeon show “iCarly”, to track the evolution of his style both onscreen and off. now five years in, nathan has gone from television shows to feature films and discusses how his style has changed. stray from the typical horizontal-striped Abercrombie & Fitch polo shirts that were selected for his wardrobe, and purposely tries not to wear them as a distinction between his character and his own individuality. Nathan finds this style to be very specific to his character, and once even saw a kid at a Halloween event dressed up like Freddie with the classic striped shirt. Now, however, as the show’s characters have matured, he’s been able to grow out of it.

He’s come to like the trend and thinks it one of his better style upgrades. “I had to get used to wearing slim fit recently because I noticed that when photos are taken, it just doesn’t look good.” Not only does Nathan get to wear all the mature Freddie’s clothing, he also has very cool stylists on the show who know his body type and the clothes that fit him best. This team has helped guide his fashion sensibility. started getting older his style followed the course of nature, going from layered sweatshirts to tighter, more form-fitting tees. Considering his new spot as one of the top male heartthrobs, the question arises as to whether Nathan’s heavily female fan base has any influence on what he wears. Nathan says it does have a little bit of influence, and that while he’s not particularly in tune with what girls like guys to wear he does get positive feedback on his and his character’s respective styles. he could choose a label he wanted to wear he’d pick Armani or Ted Baker, and that he usually wears a lot of Hugo Boss. “I try to remind people that I’m becoming a man, so I try to dress myself in more of a professional way.” As for that head of hair, Nathan says it has undergone several evolutions over the past two years. He says his first hairstyle was his biggest mistake; he had the whole top of his head in some sort of spiked afro that made it look gigantic. From there he went with the front flip, which then became more of a lifted comb-over look, but that was only because he was trying to grow his hair out and that was the only style that worked with the long hair. He then decided to cut it short and spike it out in the front. Recently, at the Australian Kids’ Choice Awards, his stylist told him she wanted to try something different. She cut his hair and used a bunch of products he had never seen before, and when he finally got to see it, he liked it a lot.

So now he’s combined the last two styles in a sort of combed-over and pieced look he says is an extension of the combination younger and older look. Now graduating over from television to movies, Nathan imparted that his recent character in the film “Game of Your Life” was very interesting to play because it involved a style he wasn’t used to at all. His character, Phillip, is a video gamer who wears nothing but black - a color that proved quite uncomfortable in the hot Atlanta summer weather in which the movie was filmed. He was, however, very excited when he got to wear a black vest in one of the final scenes. He admits the style took some getting used to but it was neat being involved in such a different project. As he’s been getting older, Nickelodeon has been aging up Nathan’s wardrobe, and those Australian Kids’ Choice Awards have had the most major affect on his style thus far. Nathan says he was styled with with jackets, and one he liked a lot was a grey trench coat from H&M that he felt dressed up anything underneath it. He said that award show affected him significantly, because it was the first time they really tried to age him up. On the red carpets he would be styled with nice jeans, a button-down and a nice blazer, which was the oldest he’s ever looked. He now wears a lot of jackets, and usually carries one around in his car just in case the warm California
weather takes a turn and gives him an excuse. When it comes to letting his extensive female fan base know his take on female styles, he said he’s not incredibly picky and respects a girl who is comfortable enough to wear a shirt and jeans and shoes - one who doesn’t have to hide behind any fancy clothes or labels… unless at a fancy event. Quickly remembering he’s talking to a fashion magazine, he charmingly adds that he has nothing against skirts and dresses, and also likes the “girly type stuff ” too. As with many guys, he also prefers less makeup and simpler looks, noting that less is always more. As his exciting career progresses, Nathan attests that it’s all with plenty of help and motivation from his fan base. He loves his fans and his whole experience with “iCarly” would be completely different without their support. He also says that thanks to Twitter, it’s really easy to have a personal connection with fans because it’s so easy to update, and he likes that people can feel closer to him and what’s going on in his life. He said he made a Twitter account at first to simply stay connected and follow people, and he now has about half a million followers.

Getting to speak with the South Florida style icons themselves, Jenna and Jamie of Hot Pink Style shared their style secrets and techniques that make them one of the hottest styling duos out there. From individualized make up looks to body-type styling, these girls know how to make everyone look extraordinary! For one of the first times ever, the princesses of style gave an exclusive interview,
giving us a sparkling peek into their diva lives. What got you into style initially? Were you always fashionable in school, or did you have any certain outside influences? Our mother was and still is our style icon. Growing up we spent most of our time in her lavish closets and dressing area; everything was always glamorous and decadent. How and when did you start your company? did you begin styling people and that grew into the company? We have been doing this our whole lives (we say jokingly). Since we were young we were immersed into fashion
and beauty and it always stuck with us! Our company, Hot Pink Style was officially born four years ago…this is what we were meant to do! What types of events/people do you style and where? Our repertoire includes styling for fashion editorials, music videos, movies and commercials. To our private cliental services we do red carpet events, personal shopping, and closet edits. What has been your greatest accomplishment, your favorite event, or favorite person to style? Its so funny because we would say all of clients and projects are, our favorite…we just absolutely love what we do!

What are you current favorite trends for clothing, hair, makeup and accessories? Jenna: For clothing, I’m kind of obsessed with sorbet colors right now, and putting them together with winter whites and metallic’s, or pairing them with bold colors. Accessories that I am totally in love with right now is jewelry designer Shiroiy D. Cama, they are just exquisite precious and semi precious oversized pieces that make such a bold statement. I also love Gleam by Melanie Mills. Jamie: I’m loving a dewy fresh face for spring; loving nudes and peach tones on eyes, lips, and cheeks and obsessed with nude gloss. don’t really love because we love all fashion! However, if we had to pick one we would both agree on, the “ Bad Cargo Capri Pant” that we see a lot of body styles wearing, and no matter what the body type is its just never a really flattering look. They seem to mostly be worn with a flat or sandal, which makes the cargo capri pant style even more frumpy. What are some of your golden rule style tips? Jamie: you shouldn’t wear something that you don’t feel gorgeous, confident, or amazing in, no matter what. Jenna: The right silhouette is key for your body, knowing what you want to highlight or disguise is so important. style?
Jamie: tights with everything, motorcycle boots, leather jackets, scarves, and hoops. Jenna: I always say a vintage piece... anything vintage is timeless and a never fail go-to.

ull of wit, charm, and beauty, Ashley Hinshaw gives a glimpse into her exciting and fast-moving life while being prepped for her Icon cover shoot. From childhood dreams to dreams come true, her journey has been something you’d expect to see in a movie. Ashley says she always wanted to be an actress while growing up in Indiana, and laughingly admits she’d always get animal roles such as Toto and a bird in “Alice in Wonderland”. She even played a tree, but that never discouraged her. She wanted to move to Los Angeles after high school to be discovered, and as fate would have it, a well-known New York fashion photographer Bruce Weber discovered her, leading Ashley to Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister ads. Ashley’s modeling career excelled rapidly, landing her in shoots all over the world. She even had an apartment in Paris because she was back and forth between there and New York so much. “It’s crazy; starting in January I had never left the United States, and by June I had been all over the world,” she observes. During her modeling career, Ashley admits that she was a lot more stylish in New York compared to the more laid back vibe of Los Angeles. She used to wear a lot of black in New York and Paris, but in Los Angeles she loves to perk up an outfit with color. She likes looks such as Odelin, Parker, Ir Le Vigne and Alexander Wang, which she finds simple with a

twist. Ashley also likes clothing that can be reinvented - clothing that’s versatile and comfortable. Ashley’s staple shoe is a suede boot, and her favorite boot designer is Elizabeth & James. In Los Angeles, Ashley rocks Converse, and says she is definitely not a fan of flip-flops. At the shoot Ashley wears a pair of worn flat leather boots she got from a movie she was in, keeping them because she liked them so much. In her makeup bag you would find Mac eye shadows, especially in natural neutral colors or a light purple. She’s also big on mascara, especially since she has blonde eyelashes, and loves her mascara by Dior. Recently she’s been getting into red lips, and admits that you definitely have to have the right mentality to wear it. She recounts, “I remember I wore red lips to the Teen Vogue party and was nervous at first; you definitely have to be bold to wear it.” As for those perfect blonde locks, Ashley says the hairstyles she’s trending toward now are the low ponytail, the fish tail, and the low braid, though she likes to change things up. She once dyed her hair red and loved it! Ashley says she loves modeling but wanted to act more than anything, and apparently destiny agreed. She fell upon a manager while in New York who sent her to her very first audition

for a spot on the hit CW show, “Gossip Girl”. “It was so exciting, but I didn’t think I was going to get the part so I flew back to Los Angeles, and of course as soon as my phone got service when I landed I had a voicemail from my manager telling me not to leave New York and that I had gotten the part. I turned right back around.” Playing herself as a model as well as the notorious Chuck Bass’ love interest in the episode, Ashley recalls the cast being very friendly. It being her first major gig, Ashley admits to never having been around actors before but being very impressed by everyone’s sincerity. This was also her first time having a trailer. She playfully confesses to going camera crazy because she was so thrilled about it. Immediately after filming “Gossip Girl”, Ashley booked her second gig on “Fringe”. Everything happened so quickly, and in January of 2010 she moved to Los Angeles with no connections. She says that even though initially she would lose parts to bigger names, she was overly realistic, living in the moment, and extremely appreciative. Not being well known yet proved to have a bright side when it landed Ashley a role in the upcoming movie “LOL” featuring Miley Cyrus. Ashley says they were looking for someone lesser known to play Miley’s character’s best friend. Ashley says working
with Miley for her first big job was amazing yet intimidating, but that the star was very down to Earth and welcoming. Two weeks after finishing filming for “LOL”, Ashley was in South Africa filming the 21st Century Fox movie “Chronicle”. She claims it was probably her favorite to film because of the great location and cast. The movie follows three boys who accidentally obtain superpowers, using them for fun at first but eventually finding themselves in a whirlwind of predicaments. “Chronicle” hit theaters February 3rd. Next Ashley filmed the movie “Cherry”, set to debut in March and starring James Franco and Heather Graham. She plays an estranged prostitute, which she describes as interesting because it was the role furthest from her and a great opportunity to take a journey away from herself. Privy to my prying for juicy details about getting to make out with James Franco on screen, she laughed and told me he’s a great actor who gets very into his character. As her dream of acting rapidly turns into an amazing reality, Ashley is so busy with acting that now that she only models as an actress, which she likes because now she’s “not just a clothes hanger”.
In her downtime, Ashley enjoys hanging out in Santa Barbara. She’s big on antiquing and collecting weird things no one needs. One of her specific hobbies is collecting antique picture frames in which she displays artwork her ten-year-old goddaughter sends by mail. After such an amazing year, Ashley is excited and ready for her career as an actress, and shows truly genuine appreciation and gratitude for all of the opportunities that have presented themselves to her.

She began her career in fashion at the tender age of sixteen working as an apprentice milliner and training as a dressmaker at Talbot in Paris.
