Internship Opportunity Columbia University Libraries The Library Information Technology Office at Columbia University is seeking a library school intern with excellent communication and analytical skills who is interested in learning about current library workflow practices, identifying areas where these processes can be improved, and then implementing, through various technical tools, solutions to help improve both the speed and accuracy of library processes. Interns in this position will have the opportunity to explore current processes in place at a research university library and have a key role in creating new systems. No prior experience is required. This internship is unpaid and a semester-long commitment. Only currently enrolled students are eligible for consideration. Internship Site

535 West 114th Street New York, NY 10027 Internship Assignment With the guidance of staff from the Library Information Technology Office, and working with colleagues in departments across the library, the intern will catalog current workflow procedures, talk to both users and managers about benefits/drawbacks of current systems, and work across departments to develop new workflow systems. Primary responsibilities will include: • • • • • • Discussing and observing current practices in departments across the libraries. Initiation with managers and current users of processes to identify possible suggestions and solutions for inefficiencies. Drafting proposals for new workflow procedures to help augment and replace existing practices. Work extensively with JIRA workflow software and other computer tools in order to create centralized, reliable tracking and workflow management. Guide and evaluate test runs of new workflow procedures, and using feedback, gain buy-in from all parties involved. Implement and train users for new workflow systems.

Qualifications Interested students should have completed at least 6 credits or have experience working in a library/information services setting. Professional Interactions Through daily or weekly work, the intern will communicate with staff members across the entire library, and will be responsible for taking feedback, suggestions, and drafting them into proposals for new systems. Professional Development The intern will receive training and hands-on experience in varied aspects of workflow within the library, identifying processes or departments where improvement will be easily obtainable.
