Solution Brief Intel® IoT Platform End-to-End IoT Reference Model and Products

Intel® IoT Platform Your Reference Model and Products for Secure, Scalable, Interoperable End-to-End IoT

What is the Intel® IoT Platform? The Intel® IoT Platform is an end-to-end reference model and family of products from Intel and the industry that provides a foundation for seamlessly and securely connecting devices, delivering trusted data to the cloud, and delivering value through analytics.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is at the heart of a powerful technology revolution. The act of connecting devices and systems to each other so that they can share data is the seed of new products, services, and experiences. Shared data will transform industries from healthcare to retail, accelerate scientific research, and change the way we live. Today, there are many IoT solutions based on Intel® technology in operation worldwide and the impact has been significant for businesses and consumers. But there are challenges to effectively deploying and scaling IoT. Currently, 85% of devices are not designed to connect to the Internet and cannot share data with the cloud.1 Securing the billions of things and devices already connected—and the massive amounts of data they generate—is a top-of-mind barrier to adoption for many industries and organizations. Interoperability is challenging in an ecosystem with hundreds of often incompatible products and complex multiproduct solutions. And, custom IoT solutions may fit a particular need very well—but be impossible to cost-effectively scale. The Intel® IoT Platform is an end-to-end reference model and family of products from Intel and the industry that provides a foundation for seamlessly and securely connecting devices, delivering trusted data to the cloud, and delivering value through analytics. It represents Intel’s commitment to increasing the viability of IoT so that its full promise can be realized worldwide. With the Intel IoT Platform, a broad spectrum of interoperable, cross-ecosystem IoT solutions can be built and optimized—with the added Intel advantages of scalable compute, security from device to cloud, and data management and analytics support. • Security: Tightly integrated hardware and software security from the edge to the cloud, along with data protection and policy management, delivers trusted data to applications that deliver value • Interoperability: Modular, standardized Intel technologies seamlessly communicate to one another, accelerating time to market and reducing the cost of deploying and maintaining IoT solutions

• Scalability: Industry-leading Intel solutions across the IoT infrastructure deliver scalable compute from edge to cloud • Manageability: Device, security, and advanced data management provide end users with the capabilities to manage and deploy large-scale IoT systems • Analytics: Delivering trusted data and the capability to run analytics near the sensors from the edge to the datacenter enables real-time insights and streamlining operations

Figure 1

Intel IoT Platform The Intel IoT Platform identifies the key components of an IoT solution, how they work together, and where essential capabilities—such as security and analytics—happen. Let’s take a look. In Figure 1, you see a representation of the end-to-end platform, beginning on the far left with the data generators— those devices and sensors used at work and at home—and ending on the far right with the data analysts and industries that rely on data to inform their actions and decisions. 1. Connecting Devices and Gathering Data: As data is gathered from connected devices and sensors, both the hardware and software are verified and secured to ensure only trusted data is sent to the cloud.

2. Bringing Intelligence to the Edge: After it is verified, raw data still needs to be filtered, managed, and sent to the cloud. This data is already valuable to many industries and users (for instance, getting instant directions from your GPS or automating manufacturing processes based on output)—and can be analyzed to inform devices and machines at the edge. 3. Turning Information into Insight: Significant processing happens in the cloud before data is stored— this can include applying policies (for example, separating healthcare data from personal identifiers) and directing the right data to the right database. Here too, data may be utilized by industries to manage devices, policies, and networks.

4. Visualize Data and Monetize Insight: Finally, the collected data is made available to autonomous machine systems or end-users— such as data scientists, analysts, and researchers—accessing the appropriate databases. The resulting insight informs a breadth of actions, services, and operations. 5. End-to-End Security: At every point in the platform, security is applied at the hardware and software layers to ensure devices, networks, and data are secured. Policy management and secure scalable compute help protect transactions and services.

Moving IoT Forward The Intel IoT Platform offers system integrators and the wider ecosystem a clear foundation for innovation and growth.
