Starting our 4th year of serving the sea islands

O
ver the past couple of years there has been an amazing infux
of new restaurants on Johns Island. Springing up in various
locations along Maybank Highway, these blossoming
eateries are in part a response to the vast array of produce grown
on the island. Chefs who formerly spent their entire lives in major
metropolises or even downtown Charleston have taken notice of the
natural goodness growing in the nearby countryside, and many have
moved their headquarters to the Maybank corridor. Places like Wild
Olive, Fat Hen and Sunrise Bistro are ofering seasonal menus based
almost entirely on what’s growning within a 20 mile radius, and their
eforts have not gone unnoticed. Maybank Highway on Johns Island
has become a destination for foodies, farmers and fresh-food fanatics
alike, and the trend is growing with delicious results.
In February of this year, Hickory Hawg, a local barbeque restaurant, closed its doors
for the last time. But with the loss of a well-loved dining spot came an opportunity for
former J. Paul’z owner Paul Farrell and his investment partner, David Christopher.
“I was ready to move to a diferent role,” said Paul, who sold his restaurant J. Paul’z, a
popular tapas and sushi bar on James Island, just last year. “I was ready for pizza.”
While Paul was quick to point out that there is a lot of good pizza around the
Charleston area, he and David noticed that there wasn’t a place that served “mid-western
pizza”.
What’s mid-western pizza? According to Paul, it’s a thin crust pizza with toppings
that travel all the way to the edges, leaving little to no crust on the rim. Sauces vary from
traditional tomato base to barbeque, garlic and even hummus, and toppings are almost
always added at the very end. If it doesn’t need to be melted or warmed, it’s added fresh
before the pizza is served.

In May of 2007, our company sent the
very frst edition of Te Island Connection
to your doorsteps, but the heart of this
paper has been beating in me for far longer
than that.
When I frst moved to Charleston at
the age of eight, my dad, an Episcopalian
minister, was given the job of Camp
Minister at Camp St. Christopher.
Consequently, I spent every summer for
almost ten years on the beaches of Seabrook
and Kiawah Islands. I grew up under the
oak trees and summer stars, breathed in
the cool salt air of the sea every night and
learned to sail, swim, braid friendship
bracelets and make “bug juice” during
the day. I was anointed in the infamous
pluf mud pit at the tip of Seabrook Island
where Privateer Creek meets the ocean
and learned to dance the shag on the
sandy foors of the beachside recreation
room. I watched the building of Betsy
Kerrison Boulevard and the Freshfelds
roundabout, and smiled sadly when the
cabins at the Camp were outftted with air
conditioners; I actually liked the idea of
“roughing it” on the long, hot midsummer
days, when the faintest breath of cool air
felt like a blessing from heaven and a dip
in the ocean was obligatory whether you
had your bathing suit on or not. I had my
very frst kiss on these beaches and ever
since, I have been a part of these islands.

have come to meet many of you and have
enjoyed the opportunity to bring some of
what makes these islands so special to your
attention. I have been able to meet residents
who have been here longer than I have
been alive, and others who only arrived in
the past couple of months: but everyone, I
have found, has the same passion for these
islands and these communities. You all are
in some way a child of the sea islands. Te
ocean wind wraps around you and your
toes curl in the same warm sand as island
residents’ have for hundreds of years. You
drive the same roads that Indians walked
and Revolutionary War soldiers rode.
You’ve passed under the same oak trees,
eaten the same foods and basked in the
same breathtaking sunsets. Te history of
these islands is now a part of you and you
will leave your mark on them, whether
you know it or not.
I hope to be with you, writing for
you, investigating the beauty and history
of these islands for many years to come,
and I hope I have imparted at least a little
of the passion I feel for this place that I
love so very much. I thank you for your
kindness, your comments, your gentle
encouragements and helpful corrections.
I welcome any ideas you may have that
you feel could be shared on our pages and
above all, I thank you for reading and
helping to make this paper a part of these
beautiful, enduring islands.

everal local residents from Johns
Island, Kiawah, and Seabrook
met on April 21 at Java-Java in
Freshfelds Village to establish the
JIKISI Cycling group. Te participants’
hope is to organize rides together and
meet new friends who enjoy getting out
for a bit of exercise on a two-wheeler.
On Saturday, April 24, fve JIKISI
Cycle Group members, including a
Charleston visitor from Greensboro,
NC, left Murraywood Church and rode
out to Rockville on Wadmalaw and
back, a distance of about 42 miles. On
this ride we used our road bikes, but many in the group also use
mountain bikes, cruisers, or anything else with two wheels. Our
pace was enough to give a good workout, but relaxing enough to
enjoy some conversation and the lovely
ambiance of a Lowcountry morning.
Te young guy set the pace for the
other more “seasoned” riders, and we
only hollered “Slow down!” on a few
occasions.
Te JIKISI Cycle Group invites anyone
who likes to get out on a bike to join the
group. We have established a Google
Group called JIKISI Cycling. You can
sign up either by visiting http://groups.
google.com/group/jikisi-cycling or send an
email to [email protected]. Tis
Group will be used to post information about rides, pair up bikers for
smaller rides or just to share information that would be of interest.

With 12 incredible specialty pizzas and
the option of an original Chicago deep
dish pizza on the menu, Paul and David
have obviously been working closely
with their new head chef, Stephen
VanHooser. Stephen, a former
chef at Cypress and West
Ashley’s Glass Onion,
has brought with him
a deep understanding
of the Charleston
appetite and a mind
for working with
seasonal ingredients.
Between the three of
them, Paul guesses that
they must have eaten at
least 200 pizzas just to nail
down the restaurant’s signature
house tomato sauce and homemade
crust.
As for the name of the island’s new
pizza place, Paul simply shook his head
and laughed. “We had already named the
restaurant when the movie came out,” Paul
smiled, in reference to the latest movie
in the Twilight vampire series which has
taken the adolescent market by storm.
New Moon Pizzeria and Pub is a refection
of Paul’s fne-dining-at-low-cost ideals.
Consisting of fresh, local ingredients, a
menu which changes with the seasons
and several creative dining options, Paul,
David and Stephen are shooting for the
moon and hoping that the rest of the
island will enjoy their modern twists as
well as their slices of traditionalism as
much as they do.
“it’s going to be ‘touch and feel’ in the
beginning,” said Paul. “We’re not entirely
sure what to expect, but we’ve had a
great response so far from the
island.”

to explain the new
concept.
Along with the idea
of monthly pizza specials
created by locals and live music
several nights a week, the New Moon
crew hopes that the pizzeria will be a place
for families to enjoy a good meal, for locals
to hang out and chat and for everyone to
be able to taste a new spin on the bounty
of Johns Island.

n Saturday April 17, 2010,
delegates at the South Carolina
Libertarian Party Convention
in Columbia made an unprecedented
vote when they cast a unanimous vote
for the US Congressional Candidate
for South Carolina District 1, Keith
Blandford.
Keith Blandford, a Sullivan’s Island
resident, is running on a monetary
policy platform, campaigning that
America needs to regain control of the
American monetary system. Blandford
is focusing on the misunderstanding
and corrupt concepts of monetary
policy and hidden tax infation, stating
that, “Te Federal Reserve is as federal
as the Federal Express, but most people
believe that the private centralized
Federal Reserve is a government
institution”.
Keith Blandford is the owner of
Warrick! Group, a small business based
out of Charleston that specializes in
all aspects of the construction process.
He graduated from Virginia Tech
in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science
in Environmental Science (Aquatic
Specialty) and a minor in Chemistry
and Biology. Blandford has worked
for the City of Norfolk, VA, as an
environmental specialist; for Te
United States Navy Reserves; and
for the United States Army National
Guard.
US Congressional South Carolina
District 1 is a coastal district which
stretches from Seabrook Island to the
North Carolina border and includes
parts of Charleston, Dorchester,
Berkeley and Georgetown counties,
as well as all of Horry county. Te
district has historically been based in
Charleston, and it currently includes
the major tourist destination of Myrtle
Beach.
Te Libertarian Party is America’s
third largest and fastest growing political
party. It was created in December 1971
by people who realized that politicians
have strayed from America’s original
libertarian foundation with disastrous
results. Teir vision was the same as
that of America’s founders -- a world
where individuals are free to follow
their own dreams in their own ways, a
world of peace, harmony, opportunity,
and abundance. As William Allen
White once said, “Liberty is the only
thing you cannot have unless you are
willing to give it to others.”

n Sunday, April 19, a crew of volunteers from Kiawah and Seabrook Islands, as well as the Kiawah Golf
Resort, descended on Mount Zion Elementary on Johns Island to help repair winter damage done to the
school’s garden. Te crew from Kiawah’s Night Heron Nature Center organized the volunteer project
as part of their week-long Earth Day celebration, but the garden itself is an ongoing efort by the Charleston
area Children’s Garden Project. Te Project, started by Darlena Goodwin, not only shows students how to grow
vegetables and herbs, it also shows them how to harvest, prepare and cook the produce that they grow. Goodwin
regularly visits Mt. Zion to check in on the kids and the garden, and loves to hear the students’ excitement as
they update her on their progress.

he year 2010 began with a kaboom
for Terry Wrenn. After 11 years
employed as a staf barber, and a
brief period rivaled by an episode of As
the World Turns, she took a leap of faith
and opened her own barbershop. Tis
time she’s the boss. Only in business since
January 4, the South Carolina native
couldn’t be happier with her decision.
Tat was the toughest part, she says.
“Actually doing it. Making up my mind to
step out on my own.” When she made up
her mind, she wasted no time. She left her
previous job at the end of October 2009.
By November she had found her new spot,
a place where customers could easily fnd
her, bright and well-lit with great picture
windows. Tose outside can see in and
customers inside can people watch as
Terry and her crew clip, snip and buzz.
By December, she signed a lease. Four
weeks later, Palmetto Barbershop opened
its doors. “It was a learning experience,”
she says. “Tere are lots of steps to opening
a business, especially downtown.” As a
matter of fact, Terry has a traditional
barber pole ready for hanging. She just
has to make sure it meets with all the city
regulations before doing so.
“It’s so much sunnier in here,” she says,
comparing her new space to that of her old
job. “It makes it so much nicer to meet
new people, bring in tourists and hear lots
of interesting stories.”
Her clientele includes local businessmen,
college students and even tourists. Not
a surprise considering her shop is at the
center of it all, located on Market Street at
Meeting Street in downtown Charleston.
Terry has three other barbers that work
with her, all of them women: Ashley,
Tammy and Cathy.
Dustin Pfef, a regular for over four
years, says he won’t go anywhere else.
“It’s my favorite barbershop ever,” he says.
“Tey treat me great, they remember me
and they never let hair go down my back.”
Men all over know what he’s talking
about, the itchiness that comes when hair
clippings fall down past the shirt collar.
“Especially when you’re wearing a business
suit,” he says.
Dustin, who works at a nearby hotel,
gets in and out in 20 minutes. Te walk-in
only policy fts the schedule of Terry’s
largest clientele: businessmen. “Tey want
to be in and out quickly with no hassles
and a good haircut. Te walk-in policy
works well for them,” Terry says.
Down the road, Terry hopes to ofer
men’s straight blade shaves, which would
compliment the hot lather neck shave she
already provides to all customers as part of
her regular $15 haircut. Warm lather goes
on, a straight razor takes it of and a hot
towel gently placed by Terry or one of her
staf gives the customer a brief, relaxing
mini-spa treatment.
She’s closer now than ever to realizing
her vision for Palmetto Barbershop, “Te
best haircut in town at a good price,” she
says.

of South Carolina will host
its 4th Annual Wine Festival
at Freshfelds Village on Saturday,
May 1, 2010, from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.

over 85 select wines from around the

Lowcountry Eats, and live music by the
Phenomena Jazz Trio. All of the proceeds
from this event will be used to grant

I
f you enjoy walking or biking along the
many paths throughout our islands,
there’s a good chance you’ve noticedthe
orange-yellow fowers of our native Cross
Vine after they’ve fallen from their lofty
perch above, littering the ground below.
Cross vine is in the Bignonia family, and
with Bignonia as its genus name as well,
this fowering vine honors a certain Paris
court librarian, Abbe Jean-Paul Bignon
(1662-1743). Te common name comes
from the anatomy of the stem. A cross-
shaped pith is revealed when the stem is
cut, aiding in the identifcation of this
species.
Cross Vine is close in appearance to
Trumpet Vine (Campsis radicans), however,
there are several diferences worth noting.
Cross Vine has a compound leaf with
two leafets, and a leafet that is modifed
into a tendril that is useful for climbing.
Te fowers are a reddish-orange color
on the outside, with yellow on the inside
pedals. Trumpet Vine has no tendrils, but
instead climbs via aerial roots. Te leaves
are pinnately compound, having a closer
resemblance to Wisteria. Te fowers
look very similar to Cross Vine, except
they usually do not have as much yellow
coloration. Trumpet Vine is also known as
“cow itch” and can cause a rash to those
sensitive to the plant. In the Lowcountry,
Cross Vine usually blooms from April
to May. Trumpet Vine will follow
with blooms in June and July, keeping
hummingbirds around throughout the
summer with more red, tubular fowers.

A
s many saw and almost
everyone heard, the
Blue Angels were in
town recently. We lined the
banks of Charleston Harbor
and for nearly an hour we
turned our eyes and attention
to the sky. I was mesmerized
as I watched them fy past at
dizzying speeds, displaying the
raw power of a jet fghter. Te
pilots and their planes danced
and conducted their aerial
acrobatics to the delight of the crowd.
Painted in sharp contrast of bright blue
and yellow, both the planes and the
performance were visually stunning and
captured my attention with every move.
I went to law school in southern
Virginia and used to play golf at
Eaglewoods located on Langley Air Force
Base. While the course has some unique
features, including power lines that criss-
cross a few holes (if you hit them you get
to replay the shot – no penalty), what
made the course truly unique was the
presence of jets.
Te Tunderbirds, the Air Force
equivalent of the Blue Angels, used to
practice fairly regularly at Langley. I’ll
never forget playing the frst hole and
getting ready to putt when the noise –
that noise that is unique to their planes
– began in the near distance and grew
louder and louder until it was so deafening
that I could have screamed at the top of
my lungs and no one would have heard
me. Te premium on quiet that is the
customary domain of the links was
shattered and I reveled in the contrast.
But as I recalled bygone days of golf
mixed with jets, something else in the
sky caught my attention. Further up,
at altitudes that were far above the
performance, there was a lone commercial
jet airliner leaving a nondescript vapor
trail across the sky. It was being fown at
a steady speed in a perfectly straight line,
a model of efciency as it was leaving
Charleston airspace.
Te jet airliner was utilitarian in every
respect, fulflling its mission of going
from one place to another governed by a
mandate to provide a safe and uneventful
experience for its passengers. Planes only
make news today when they don’t land
properly; safe landings are expected and
taken for granted.
When the vast majority of us play golf,
it is not in front of any cameras or crowds.
No one is watching what we are doing.
Tere is nothing special or spectacular
about our ability to hit or control a golf
ball and shots executed, even many of our
very best, are sub-standard compared to
those who play the game at its highest
level.
In golf, tour players are the equivalent of
the Blue Angels. Tey do what we dream.
Hitting drives incredible distances,
shaping shots and imposing their will on
the fight of the ball, commanding it to
turn left or right, fy high or low, run out
or land soft. Tey are our heroes and the
ones we try to emulate.
If any of you play golf regularly,
then you probably know a player or two
that doesn’t hit the ball terribly long,
consistently fnds the fairway, doesn’t
ever seem to get in much trouble, has a
decent short game, putts pretty well and
no matter what the round usually ends
up at a fnal score in the 70s or low 80s.
Tey never really have either a great day
or a bad day.
And that’s the thing. Golf ’s ultimate
measuring stick is not power or fash,
but score. Tose players who master
and possess a mundane and seemingly
ordinary but consistent game always
seem to fnd a way to post their number
and their skill is underappreciated.
I did a little checking. A Blue Angel
applicant need only have 1250 hours of
fight time while the standard to become
an airline pilot typically requires at least
3,000 hours total fight time.
I may not clap when the next fight
I am on safely touches down, but I will
at least say thank you. And the next
time I play with my jet-airline-pilot-of-a-
playing-partner, I am going to be sure to
tip my hat to his skill, as well.

A Charleston Yacht Afair
F
or a while it was known as the Sweet
Corn Festival, but even though one
of the most delicious and nostalgic
things in the world is that frst bite of sweet
corn straight of the stalk, “It was just
too bloomin’ hot,” said Tomas Legare.
So instead of waiting until mid-June for
the frst crop of sweet corn to mature, the
Legare family has moved their harvest
celebration to May 1, and in doing so, has
revived an exciting old-time tradition.
“We’ve been holding spring picnics
every year since 1978,” said Helen Legare
Floyd, sister of Tomas Legare. “It all
started when Daddy planted too much
corn one year and we invited family and
friends over for a corn boil.”
Te family get-togethers had been
going on long before then, however. For
as long as the Legare’s can remember,
they spent every Saturday afternoon at
their grandmother’s house. Teir aunts
would set up croquet and horseshoes and
everyone would play games and enjoy a
potluck of homemade food.
“When we were kids, we were either
at someone’s house or they were at our
home,” said Linda Legare. “Now we
really only see each other at weddings and
funerals.”
Although the spring picnic has been
more or less for family since the late 70s,
last year the Legare’s decided to open it up
to the public.
“We want to bring that sense of
closeness and community back
to the island,” said Tomas. And
while the Legare’s already have
close relationships with their CSA
(Community Supported Agriculture)
members, they felt that they needed
to reach out to the rest of the island
and surrounding areas, as well.
“We didn’t want 600, 700 people in
our CSA,” Helen pointed out. “We
wanted to get to know everyone. I
mean, right now I know that one of
our customers can’t stand asparagus,
and another absolutely hates cantaloupe.
I know their kids and ask about their
families. We create relationships, which is
how it should be, and what we want to
continue with the Spring Picnic.”
Tis year will be the second Spring
Picnic hosted by the Legare family at
Legare Farms. Along with yard games, a
bonfre and a bluegrass jam session with
Ricky Rio (if you like to play, you’re
welcome to join in!), on May 1 from 4 -
7 p.m. the Legares will be serving fresh
sweet corn from a friend’s farm in Florida,
hamburgers and sausage dogs made from
their own beef, and potato salad with
spring onions and tomato & cucumber
salad from their own farm. Tere will even
be homemade ice cream with strawberries
from neighboring Ambrose Farms.
Proceeds from the celebration will
go to fund the Legare Farms Education
Foundation, the mission of which is to help
raise awareness and educate Lowcountry
communities and school children on
the agricultural heritage of this region
and the need to maintain this legacy for
future generations. Te program provides
school feld trips, community educational
opportunities, and special educational
events.

n a balmy Lowcountry spring afternoon, Cottage Aroma Bella held their ofcial grand
opening party on the lawn of their new spa located on Fort Trenholm Road on Johns
Island. Although Cottage Aroma Bella has been open since early January of this year,
owners Peggy and Paul Lieber wanted to give their elegant new spa the formal grand opening it
deserves.
With the gentle notes of a classical chamber trio from Charleston Chamber Music playing
in the eaves, guests to the grand opening enjoyed fresh acai berry martinis, hand rolled sushi,
delicate slices of roast beef on hot rolls and bowls of fresh fruit. Billowing white tents sheltered
comfortable lounge areas and dining tables, not only showcasing the elegance of the Cottage and
its beautiful Lowcountry setting, but also how the lawn could be transformed into an excellent
location for receptions and formal parties.
Te Liebers were gracious as always, taking the time to walk each visitor personally through the
new spa and ofering cups of their signature tea, which consists of a refreshing blend of organically
grown lemongrass, mint and local honey. All of the spa’s lotions and body washes are made by
the Lieber’s main company, Royal Labs, which is located just steps from the spa, and gift bags of
lotion samples were given to everyone who dropped by.

Carrots are just now arriving at the local farmers’ markets and CSAs,
so this is a great recipe for a delicious, fresh family meal:

Ingredients:

· 4 cups cooked sliced carrots
· 1 1/2 cups croutons
· 1 1/4 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
· 2 eggs, beaten
· 1/4 cup butter, melted
· 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
· 1 teaspoon salt
Preparation:
Place carrots in a buttered 1 1/2 quart casserole. Stir in croutons
and cheese. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over carrot
mixture. Bake uncovered at 400° for 20 minutes or until brown.
Serves 6.

t the Town of Kiawah Island’s
Public Safety Committee meeting
on Tuesday, April 20, Chief Karl
Ristow of the St. John’s Fire Department
gave an update on the independent
investigation being conducted by the North
Charleston Fire Department (NCFD) of
the fre at the River Course Clubhouse,
which occurred on March 19. Ristow
noted the St. John’s Fire Department
wanted to be sure that “Ethically, they
were doing the right thing.”
As previously reported, the original early
morning fre was concentrated around a
can light in the plywood ceiling above the
men’s sauna, and the dead space between
the ceiling of the sauna and the space under
the next foor above. Te heat generated
set of a sprinkler head near the light
fxture. After the fre was extinguished,
the Fire Department cut holes in the
ceiling and inspected the area visually and
with thermal imaging cameras, which are
designed for seeing through smoke and
not walls or other construction products.
Because the building is structurally
compartmentalized, it complicated the
Fire Department’s ability to fnd and fght
the fre.
While no conclusions have been
fnalized, the NCFD’s investigation to
date seems to indicate the fre was actually
caused by a short in a wire running up a
side wall of the sauna. It appears that there
was no conduit (it was not in a protected
casing). Te short and subsequent fre in
the wall traveled up and through the heavily
compartmentalized area to the light can
in the ceiling. Tere was no indication at
the time that the Fire Department needed
to tear the entire sauna apart; therefore
there was no way for them to know that
the wire in the wall was heating up to a
dangerous level.
Later that morning, approximately
two hours after the Fire Department left
the River Course, Clubhouse employees
noticed smoke coming from the attic
area and called 911. By the time the
Fire Department returned, the fre
was entrenched in the attic, which had
minimal access from the interior and
none from the outside through the slate
roof. Further exacerbating the situation
was the volume of documents stored in
the attic, which provided additional fuel
to the fre. Within 15 minutes of the
Fire Department’s Incident Commander
pulling all frefghters from the structure,
the slate roof collapsed. Shortly thereafter,
all fre trucks close to the building were
pulled back. Tis was done within minutes
of the outside walls collapsing.
It is Fire Department policy, complying
with National consensus standards and
best practices, that “Life safety is number
one.” According to the Fire Department’s
risk management guidelines, it will take
a greater acceptable risk where there is a
potential to save lives; it will take limited
risk to save property; and it will take no
risk when lives and property are already
lost. Because of limited access and the fre
load (records storage) in the attic space,
the building could not be saved.
Having fnished the “look back” part
of their investigation, the NCFD is now
waiting to examine various documents,
such as building permits and plans,
including those for the electrical work
and sprinkler system, in order to complete
their job.
What the NCFD investigators have
determined so far is the following:
A combination of factors – how
the sprinkler system operates; the
compartmentalization of the building;
weight and limited access to the attic; and
the need to cut tree limbs – contributed to
the intensity of the fre.
Tere is no evidence to indicate the
St. John’s Fire Department should have
responded diferently for both incidents at
the River Course Clubhouse.
When the investigation has been
completed, the fnal report and its
analysis will be made available for the
public to view.

Governor’s Cup returns to Bohicket Marina

T
he year 2010 will be a very exciting year for the
Bohicket Marina, beginning with the Bohicket
Marina Invitational Billfsh Tournament. We
have the privilege of kicking of the South Carolina
Governor’s Cup Billfshing Series, as well as welcoming
one of Charleston’s favorite restaurants, Red’s Ice
House, to the Marina.
Bohicket Marina hosted the inaugural tournament
in the SC Governor’s Cup Billfshing Series and is
pleased to be the frst tournament held in the series this
year. Te Marina will continue its reputation for hosting
a frst-class event this year, as well as its dedication
to sportsmanship, camaraderie and conservation.
Our dedicated staf will be on hand throughout the
tournament to provide personalized service to the
participants and their guests. In addition,
Red’s Ice House will be a large supporter of
the tournament and will certainly add to the
excitement this year with nearly 11,000 square
feet of eating and dining space, along with
spectacular sunset views from the new deck
and patio. Our goal is simply to be the best
and to ensure that “Te tradition continues.”

state record blue marlin caught from the
Bohicket Marina! Te tournament will be held
Wednesday, May 12, through Saturday, May
15. Weigh-ins will occur nightly beginning
at 5 p.m., with entertainment and live music

will be held on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. All
events are open to the public.

a slew of bigger and better events for this year.

his past April 16 – 18, 2010,
Legare Farms celebrated their
6
th
annual Battle of Charleston.
With an amazing kick-of of more than
800 school students visiting the farm on
Friday, April 16, the Legares were happy
with the turnout over the weekend. In
an efort to continually ofer new and
exciting presentations of the Civil War as
it afected Charleston and the Sea Islands,
this year’s battle was not one particular
battle but rather a combination of many
smaller encounters and skirmishes that
occurred around the area.
During the War Between the States,
the main focus of the Federal Anaconda
Plan was to close all of the seaports
of the new Confederate
nation, especially the port
of Charleston. According to
the battle literature, Federal
gunboats would daily steam
up the Stono River to scout
out Confederate forces.
During a July night in 1862,
four feld artillery pieces were
moved to a small island on
the bend of the river. It was
from here that Confederates
opened fre on the gunboats
as they passed. Te Federals, caught by
surprise, returned fre and quickly fed
back to their base on Folly Island. Te
Confederates, thinking they had driven
of the enemy, began to withdraw to the
island interior. Before long, however, the
Union boats returned and a battle raged
for three hours, with the Federals fnally
being pushed back to the river and fnally
to Folly Island.

is preparing for its frst harvest of the year
with the First Flush FesTEAval. Dedicated
to the commencement of the 2010 crop
harvest, the First Flush FesTEAval is a
celebration of America’s only tea garden and
