Directions: Individually, you will research one Italian writer or painter from the Middle Ages or Renaissance era (suggestions are below). Your goal is to make a brochure about this artist/writer to convince your peers as to why this artist was and still is important to Italian culture. This assignment is due in class on Friday, October 18. Time in class to complete these assignments (you should expect to spend some time outside of class on this project): • You will be given 3.5 days during class to research and make your brochure. Bring in materials you to complete the project. o Class days for completing brochure:  Thursday, October 10  Friday, October 11 (after the food project presentation)  Tuesday, October 15 (only half because you will take a quiz during the beginning of class)  Wednesday, October 16 Artist suggestions***: o Niccolò Machiavelli (writer of The Prince) o Sofonisba Anguissola (painter) o Lavinia Fontana (painter) o Veronica Gambara (writer) o Sandro Botticelli (painter of Primavera) o Michelangelo (sculptor of David) o Leonardo da Vinci (painter of Mona Lisa) o Artemisia Gentilieschi (painter of Judith) o Dante Aligheri (writer of Divine Comedy) o Francesco Petrarca (poet, also known as Petrarch) ***if there are other artists that you have in mind please see me and we can discuss your options. Your brochure will include: • What type of artist this person was (painter, poet, writer, sculptor, etc.) • At least four different pictures of famous works by this artist (for writers, you can include poems and/or segments of major works, also include a painting/drawing of this artist where available) • The general background of your artist (Where was this artist from? Who did this artist marry? Did this artist train under another artist? Did this artist train a famous artist?) • Why he/she important to the Italian Renaissance or Middle Ages • Why is this artist still important to Italian culture today? There should be at least one paragraph devoted to this. • Anything else you want to include? Tips for you to succeed at this project: • Use lots of images. You will have to use your own time to print out these images. Plan ahead. • Be clear and concise. • Grab the viewer’s attention. Convince your peers why this artist is still important to Italian culture today! 1
