Theatre on Screen
February is shaping up as an
exciting month for theatre
and opera lovers, as Dendy
Byron Bay Cinemas screen
two more operas from the
New York Metropolitan Opera
season, as well as another
play from Britain’s National
Theatre. The NT Live program
of flmed plays has seen a
very diverse selection so far:
a classic Greek tragedy in
Phedre, a Shakespeare, and
now a production for the
whole family: Nation, based
on the novel by Terry Pratchett
(Discworld). This witty and
challenging adventure story is
set in a parallel world in 1860.
Two teenagers are thrown
together by a tsunami that has
destroyed Mau’s village, and
left Daphne shipwrecked on his
South Pacifc island, thousands
of miles from home. Neither
speaks the other’s language
yet somehow they must learn
to survive, as starving refugees
gather. Overseen by a foul-
mouthed parrot, together they
come of age. Suitable for adults
and children over ten, Nation
screens on Saturday and
Sunday at 1pm.
The Big Joke is Back
It’s that funny time of year
again. Now in its fourth year,
The Big Joke Comedy Festival

kicks of MC’d by the simply
gorgeous Vanessa Wagner,
and the lineup includes some
of the best comedians in
Australia. Visit The Big Joke at
www.thebigjoke.com.au for
more details. Tickets purchased

previous years, purchase

Bay on 6685 6262.
Ando the Comedy
Commando
Some of you will know Wil
Anderson as ‘the bloke who
sits in the middle on that
ABC-TV show with the weird
name’ (The Gruen Transfer).
You might have also heard him
on the radio as the Wil part of
Wil and Lehmo on Triple M,
or on the much-loved Triple
J Breakfast Show with Adam
Spencer. But it is standup
comedy that is Wil’s true
passion. He has proudly told
‘dick jokes for cash’ in pretty
much every comedy club and
festival in Australia, and taken
his knob gags international to
Edinburgh, Montreal, New York
and in December made his
London premiere with a two-
week season at the Riverside
Studios.Wil Anderson makes his
way to Byron Bay for two very
special shows at the Pandanus
Room at the Services Club
trialing his brand new material.
Saturday and Sunday 20 and
21. Tix are $18. Show starts at
7pm. Tix at the club on 6685

Very Fetchin Sketchin!
Bust out your pencils, Dr
Sketchys Anti-Art School has
another night of sketching,
cabaret, music, drinks, food and
frivolity coming up on Tuesday

wild models and outrageous
performances as artists and
other budding bohemians take
up charcoal and martinis for
a couple of hours of art and
glamour. Since it’s Valentines
Day (sort of ) you can expect a
session full of romantic icons
and irreverent Hallmark parody.
As always, the Buddha Bar is
there to provide the booze and
the fne food! 6-9pm. Entry is
