A very good morning to Prime Minister of Japan, Yukio Hatoyama, Deputy Prime Minister, Naoto Kan and Japan Minister of Tourism, Nariaki Nakayama. I want to say how delighted I am to be here with you today. First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Mr. Yukio Hatoyama for taking time off from his very busy schedule to be with us here today. Anyway I understand that Mr. Yukio Hatoyama has to leave by 10am. It is a great pleasure for me to join you this morning as you gather here for the Malaysia Promotion Event. Let me first and foremost record my highest appreciation to Ministry of Tourism Japan as the host of this conference, for inviting me to be a part of this special occasion. I would also like to take this opportunity to sincerely welcome all of you who have travelled from near and far to participate in this important conference, with the hope that while you attend to the serious business at hand, you will also take a moment or two to savour the numerous delights that Malaysia has to offer. I'm sure you will enjoy the warm Malaysian Hospitality that is not just the proud slogan of our National Carrier, but also the signature quality of Malaysians, known the world over. Ladies and gentlemen, Today I want to give you brief talk about our Paradise of Nature ± Sarawak or more known as Land of Hornbills or what we call in Malaysia as Bumi Kenyalang. The name 'Borneo' has long meant magic to travellers, and if you skip Sarawak, you'll miss something special. The state has a superb system of national parks, beautiful beaches and a diverse thriving tribal culture whose hospitality to strangers is unmatched. Situated on the north-western coast of Borneo, the Land of Hornbills beckons the visitor with its rich rainforests, intricate weave of rivers, pepper plantations, and the diverse cultures of its indigenous people. Sarawak shares its borders with Indonesia's Kalimantan province in the south and Brunei and Sabah in the north-east. Sarawak is Malaysia's largest state, covering an area of 124, 450 sq.km. with one of the most pleasant cities in all of Asia, Kuching, as its capital. Two-thirds of its land is covered in rainforests and its population of 1.7 million is made up of 28 ethnic groups. Sarawak's indigenous peoples have a strong sense of identity and have made their mark in government, education and the media. A unique history has given Sarawak a character of its own, distinct yet very much a part of Malaysia.

Ladies and gentlemen, From pristine underwater marine life and untouched coral reefs to rich heritage and from wilderness to modern city landscape, Sarawak is a potpourri of experiences appreciated by travellers from all over the world. Head into Sarawak's interiors and your heartbeat will flutter at the fascinating and enchanting dances of the multi-ethnic tribes living harmoniously with each other. Sarawakians practise a variety of religions, including Islam, Christianity, Chinese folk religion (a fusion of Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism and ancestor worship), Baha'i and animism. Many converts to Christianity among the Dayak people also continue to practice traditional ceremonies, particularly with dual marriage rites and during the important harvest and ancestral festivals such as Gawai Dayak and Gawai Antu. The State is bounded on the north and northwest by the South China Sea, the northeast by Sabah and Brunei Darussalam, which forms a double enclave, and the south by Kalimantan, Indonesia. Sarawak can be classified into three terrain groups: the alluvial coastal plain, the mountainous interior and the central undulating belt. Sarawak's highest point is Gunung Murut (2,434 m). Malaysia's longest river, the Batang Rajang, glides through the State. On the whole, Sarawak has an equatorial climate. The temperature is relatively uniform within the range of 23°C to 32°C throughout the year. During the months of March to September, the weather is generally dry and warm. Ladies and gentlemen, As I have said earlier, Sarawak is the paradise. First of all you will see Sarawak is a land of colourful cultures boasting 27 ethnic groups, making up a population of 1.8 million. The majority of the population live in a few large towns and cities, but a significant percentage still live in longhouses and villages in the remote areas.
