EVERCHANGING INDUSTRY Business slowing for many companies as the oil and gas industry reacts to drop in crude prices By Cory Dellenbach

I Cory Dellenbach

’ve said it before and I’m saying it again. The oil and gas industry is a roller coaster ride: One day it can be flourishing and the next it could be forcing companies out of business. It’s amazing what this industry can do for whole areas too. Take for example a report released by the Energy Information Administration in late April listing the top U.S. oilfields. The rankings were initially released in 2009

and the Eagle Ford Shale play, discovered in 2008, wasn’t even listed yet. This time, however, the southern Texas play had the top U.S. oilfield based on proved reserves in the EIA’s report. The EIA defines “proved reserves” as estimated quantities of oil and natural gas that c an be recoverable with reasonable certainty under existing economic economic and operating conditions. conditions. The Eagle Ford’s Eagleville field took the top spot, while Prudhoe Bay’s oilfield in northern  Alaska  Ala ska dropped to the third largest. In the 2009 report, the Prudhoe Bay field was the largest. The No. 2 spot on this year’s list was the Spraberry Trend field in the Permian Basin. Colorado’s Wattenberg field was fourth, while Eagle Ford’s Briscoe Ranch was fifth. In natural gas, the top U.S. field is the Marcellus Shale, which includes areas of West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Marcellus stole the top spot from Texas’ Barnett Shale area. GROWTH OF THE MARKET

Since the early 2000s, the industry has grown immensely. Just look at oilfield services company Southern Spur Enterprises, profiled this month. The Saskatche wan-ba sed company started operations in 2004 with just FREE INFO – SEE ADVERTISER INDEX

one truck and today has over 20 vehicles in its fleet. The company, which cleans tanks and production facilities in the oilsands region of Canada, operates within a 100-mile radius of Lashburn and only serves the oil and gas industry with its fleet of vacuum trucks and trailers.  Jim Donald, Southern Spur’s field supervisor, spent a week in February at the  Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport Show Show in Indianapolis tr ying to gather ideas for diversifying the company.

The oil oil and gas indust industry ry is a roller coaster ride: One day it can be flourishing and the next it could be forcing companies out of business. BEING CAUTIOUS

While Southern Spur ha s grown g rown considerably over the last 11 years, the company needs to think about diversification if it  wants to conti nue growing. g rowing. That’s tha nks to the decline in crude oil prices, which has affected the company. The Bakken Shale play is one of the areas that’s been hit hardest by the price drop. In this month’s Bakken Extra feature, we tell you about a company and some workers who have been affected firsthand by the volatile crude oil prices. For many contractors, it’s a time to tighten the shoestrings a bit and find out  where they can s ave money. HOW ABOUT YOU

How is your company dealing with the crude oil price slump, and what advice  would you give to other contractors? We’d like to hear from you. Email me at editor@ gomcmag.com or  call   call 800/257-7222 to let me know. Enjoy this month’s issue of Gas, Oil & Mining Contractor ! GOMC

erald Grassl didn’t want to leave Lashburn, Saskatchewan. He was familiar with it, he knew people and he  was fa miliar w ith the major industry in t he northern Canadian region — oil and gas exploration and production. Grassl, who was working for another company driving vacuum truck s, wanted to set out on on his own a nd saw the opportunity for success as the market was tak ing off in 2004. He launched launched his company, Southern Spur Enterprises, at that time. “He had a vision about starting hi s own company, and he went and talked to a few prominent people who were in charge of s ome of the oil companies in the area and pitched his idea to them,” says Jim Donald, field supervisor for Southern Spur. “They told him that if he built the trucks they would give him a chance, and t hat’s how it all started.” The company started with one sludge hauler, but the fleet has since expanded to over 20 trucks serving a 100-mile area around Lashburn and Lloydminster. “Basically once you get outside of this little area, there isn’t a  whole lot of other ot her i ndustry,” Donald says. “Everyone that works here is oil and gas oriented.”

GETTING TO WORK

The company, with 38 employees, has a primary focus on tank cleaning,  which accounts accounts for up up to 80 percent percent of of the business. Crude oil extracted from underground formations commonly contains sediments such as sand t hat are extracted w ith the oil. The sand settles to the  bottom of the storage tanks and accumulates, eventually blocking the tanks’ ta nks’ ports if they are not cleaned. Crews attach a hydraulic stinger to the lower portion portion of the tank wall. Water pressure mixes the sand and turns it into slurry. “Our vac trucks can then suck that out of the tank,” Donald says. Crews w ill do about 20 stings a day. The company’s sludge haulers serve oilfield production facilities. “We go in and clean the facility out and we haul the sludge from them to a nearby disposal plant.” Southern Spur uses four disposal plants situated around the area, but the Lloydminster and Unity disposal plants are the company’s primary disposal sites. “It saves us travel ing time when we’re loaded loaded by having nea rby facilit ies,” Donald says. “The whole trick to the game is to get to the tanks and then to (continued)

Southern Spur has proven it’s willing to take on any tank-cleaning job, even those that other companies can’t handle. In one case, other companies were unsuccessful cleaning a tank at a location just outside Lashburn. “It turned out to be a fairly unique job. We  went there w ith a cre w and pulled the door to the t ank back and found that it was full of concrete.” Crew members took turns jackhammering the concrete into small enough pieces for it to be loaded into a vac t ruck. “Th at job took us a week to do, but no one else would t ackle the t he job.” job.” Donald says there wasn’t any complaining from his crew members, and it helped the company secure that customer for future jobs. “The oil company  was more than happy to have us continue working for them on a regula r  basis. TRUCKS, TRUCKS AND MORE TRUCKS

Southern Spur now has a fleet of over 20 specialized trucks that help it tackle difficult jobs. “We’ve had some steady growth and went from having one sludge hauler to having six,” Donald says. Sludge haulers are different than a normal straight vacuum truck, having a double-helix drop belly rather than a standard cylindrical tank. “As the company has grown we’ve added straight vac trailers and now we’ve added self-contained vac trucks.” (continued)

In total, the company has 11 self-contained  vacuum trucks, truck s, five straight straig ht vacuum trailers trai lers and six sludge haulers. Acro Trailer of Springfield, Missouri, built all the trailers. “We also have a couple pressure trucks that  we run in conjunction with some of the straight  vacs,” Donald says. The self-contained vacuum trucks set the company apart from its competitors. “That stands us alone in the field as far as competitiveness,” Donald says. “There’s a lot of competition in our area because of the amount of  work. We’ve set ourselves apar t by going the extra mile and making it so you don’t have to have three trucks on the site, you can have just one. The cost savings are huge.” SPECIALIZED CREW

Being competitive also means having a crew that is trained properly and not afraid to work long hours. Donald says Southern Spur has both. “The training is f airly extensive, plus crew members members are required to be at our monthly safety meeting that Gerald runs.”  When hired, crew members must undergo certification for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Carriage of Dangerous Goods (CDG), first aid, H2S and confined space. IDEAS FROM THE WWETT SHOW Southern Spur Enterprises, based in Lashburn, Saskatchewan, was looking for ways to grow, and field supervisor Jim Donald thought some of its equipment manufacturers might be able to spark some ideas. Donald attended the Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport (WWETT) Show in February for the first time to meet with several of those manufacturers. “We wanted to touch base with our people and see what was new on the market,” Donald says. “All of our products that we buy were there. The maker of our vac trailers was there, our pump makers were there. Everything that is on our trucks is from people we dealt with at the show.” Southern Spur uses pumps from Hibon on its trucks, so that was one manufacturer Donald visited; others included Acro Trailer and Gardner Denver. With the downturn in crude oil prices, the company was also looking for ways to keep growing, and going to the show helped them generate some new ideas. “We were looking at some ideas for diversification and we got quite a few good ideas,” Donald says. “We were pretty impressed with the show. I was in awe when I walked in.”

“Everybody also has to be oriented by every oil company that we work for, and we probably work for 10 or 15 oil companies,” Donald says.  As field super visor, Donald is norm ally making ma king sales sa les calls cal ls and dropping in on job sites to make sure work is going smoothly. “If it’s a big job, I usually 18

organize the job and stay on site. I work with the owner to ensure that all health and safety regulations are met in the field on a regular basis also.” Grassl doesn’t do much work in the field anymore. He can usually be found in the office handling the day-to-day operations. Besides the field crews a nd the office staff, Southern Spur al so has a shop  with th ree full-t ime mechanics. “It’s actually a huge savings having our own mechanics,” Donald says. “We run them 10 hours a day, and they would work longer if need be. DOING DOUBLE DUTY With its two-for-one capabilities, Texas bed truck gives Alberta oilfield contractor a competitive edge by reducing costs for customers By Ken Wysocky

ess is more for oilfield contractors who bring large vehicles to congested drilling pads on a daily basis. In a nutshell, that explains why Fox Oilfield Services in Alberta, Canada, bought a custom-designed Texas Texas  bed truck that does double duty on drilling sites thr oughout western Ca nada — and brings substantial sav ings to customers in the process. Fox Oilfield took delivery of the extra-brawny 2015 Kenworth C500 “It oftentimes eliminates in February. Since then, the truck, the need for a bed truck  which can work as either a wi nch truck or a bed truck, has been impressing on a drilling site.” the company’s customers with its Christopher James  versatil ity. Designed and outfitted by Marcep Manufacturing Ltd., the truck can carry up to 34,000 pounds of cargo on highways and can bed or spot load up to 50,000 pounds on drilling sites, says Christopher James, vice president of Fox Oilfield, based in Nisku, which is south of Edmonton in central Alberta. “It oftentimes eliminates the need for a bed truck on a drilling site,”  James say s.  A key fe ature i s the t ruck’s 50,00 0-pound spot loading capa city, which is roughly double the payload capacity of a typical Texas bed truck, which

Hauling and spot loading large drilling rig components

FEATURES:

550 hp Cummins diesel engine, 50,000-pound spot loading payload capacity, 34,000-pound road payload capacity, 18-speed Eaton-Fuller transmission, four-speed Spicer auxiliary transmission, tri-axle locking differential, 50-ton Braden winch

COST:

About $352,000 $352,000 (or (or around $450,000 Canadian dollars) dollars)

usually maxes out around 25,000 pounds. “That provides our customers  with substanti al cost saving s avings, s, because b ecause with a single s ingle truck we can c an transport tran sport materials to the site, then also use that same truck to put the cargo in place,” says Chris Cassin, president of Fox Oilfield. “Out here, a lot of equipment is out working in remote areas that might take 14 hours to reach one way. So if they don’t have to send out a (full-size) bed truck (along with a winch truck), the cost savings is substantial.” How substantial? It can ea sily amount to thousands of dollars per day or per trip. “That’s very appealing for our customers,” customers,” Cass in says. The Kenworth features a 50 -ton winch made by Braden (a brand owned

by Pacca r) and a 550 hp, high-torque Cummi ns die sel engine eng ine that ge nerates 2,050 ft-lbs of torque, which gives the truck extra power even when it’s  working i n lousy soi l conditions. That’s a big benefit for a vehicle that’s often lugging extremely heav y loads in ver y muddy conditions, conditions, James notes. “Without exaggeration, you might be working in 2 or 3 feet of mud, especially during the springtime melt,” he says. Differential locking on all three rear axles, plus tire chai ns when needed, provides extra traction, says Edwin Krezanoski, a bed truck operator and dispatcher for Fox Oilfield. A driver can lock either one, two or all three axles, depending on the conditions, he adds.

“It’s a hardworking beast that gives us a significant competitive advantage.” Christopher James

generators generators to 400-bar rel fluid tanks, dry  bulk tan ks and compre ssors. “It does n’t n’t completely replace a bed truck and its capabilities,” James explains. “But many times it can do what a bed truck does … and if whatever we’re moving  weighs less than 34,000 pounds, we don’t need to use a trailer, which is good because there’s not a lot of space on drilli ng sites.” Fox Oilfield also owns a 1995 Kenworth C500 bed truck with tandem steering and tandem-drive axles, as well as numerous Kenworth T800  winch  winc h tractor truck s and various var ious style trailers tra ilers made by Peerless, Aspen Aspe n Custom Trailers and Doepker Industries. But it’s the Texas bed truck that’s revolutionizing revolutionizing t he company’s company’s business, James notes. “It’s a hardworking beast that gives us a significant competitive advantage,” advantage,” he says.  When Fox Oilfield orig inally inal ly starte d talking talk ing with Ma rcep officia ls about designing a more powerful Texas bed truck, James says the goal wa s 40,000 pounds of spotting capacity. To achieve and then exceed that goal required some creative engineering that moved as much weight as possible to the front of the truck to effectively create a counterweight that accommodates the extra lifting capacity. “Think of it as a teeter-totter, where we have to offset on the front end what the truck is lifting at the re ar,” ar,” he says. The moment of truth came when a customer asked if the truck could lift one of its 50,000-pound pressure tanks. “We gingerly attempted it and the truck handled it like a champ,” champ,” James says. “Being able to li ft that extr a 10,000 pounds is a big deal. That means it can handle any of the drilling packages that one of our biggest customers uses on site. “If the truck could only handle 40,000 pounds, that customer would need an extra piece of equipment from us to get the job done,” he continues. “Now they don’t have to incur the extra cost of a bed truck as a support unit on locat ion.” ion.” “That 10,000 pounds may not sound like a lot, but financially, it saves customers big time,” time,” Krez anoski notes. “This truck ha s by far exceeded our expectations.” The Kenworth truck hauls a nd spots a var iety of skid-mounted skid-mounted drilling site components, ranging from large pressure tanks, boiler units and

TIMES ARE CHANGING With low oil prices, service companies and workers are dealing with layoffs By Cory Dellenbach

R

ena Olheiser thought the man was  joking when he came up to her at Command Center, a temporary labor and staffing service center in Dickinson, North Dakota, in early April. The man said he was laid off from an oil rig, getting good money, and was looking for a new job. He said he would only work for $35 an hour, a minimum of 50 hours each week, and paid housing  with a $150 a day per diem. She soon realized he was n’t n’t joking and had a simple response. “Well, good luck  with th at,” she said.

“I’m surprised with how fast companies started cutting after the prices dropped.” Jeff Larson

Jobs like that are rare now in the Bakken and other shale plays across the country since crude oil prices dropped in October 2014. “I tell them here that everyone is expendable, everyone,” says Command Center branch manager Kristen Vesledahl. LOSING THE JOB

Alena P raus wa s one of many worker s  who lost lost their jobs when oil prices prices dropped. The 63-year-old Dickins on resident worked for three years as a clerk for Baker Hughes  when, in March, the oilfield serv ices company made cutbacks at its Dickinson office and let her go. Praus says she wasn’t surprised when the company cut her position. “I could feel it in the slowdown of 22

the work,” Praus says. “They had to give someplace. They had to go somewhere. I have no ill feelings at all.” Praus has since moved to Fargo  where she and her husband are building a retirement home closer to her two sons. She has already been applying for jobs in Fargo and wants to work a couple more  years b efore retiring.  Jeff Larson Lar son of Willi ston worked for an oilfield services company doing hydroexcavation when his company laid off about half of its employees as a result of industry slowdowns. He, at least, had something to fall back on. “I was there for five years and the cuts came up pretty quick,” Larson says. “I’m surprised with how fa st companies companies started cutting after the prices dropped. Now I’m working for my cousin in Minnesota driving flatbeds and doing deliveries. It’s a long way from home, but at least it’s something.”  While Praus and Larson Lars on bounced  back from los ing their oilfield jobs, ot hers may not be so lucky. “The guys that got laid off from out of town, out of state, they came from states  where there were no jobs,” Praus says. “They came up here to North Dakota to get a job, left their families at home, got an apartment and worked here. Now they’re without a job and go back home, and there’s still no jobs there. Those are the ones I really feel for — the guys with the families.” THE OTHER SIDE

Bob’s Oil Field Service in Belfield  was one of those Bakken Bakk en companies that  was forced to lay off employees. For owner

Rob Heim it went fast — his business was flourishing in December, but a few months later he had to make the tough move. The company was founded by his father in 1977, 1977, and Heim says it was pain ful to tell his employees that he no longer had enough work to keep them employed. “What’s really tough for me is when I see these guys come from Michigan and Idaho, and they pack up to come here and

kind of settle in and start going to work, and then all of a sudden they’re sitting across your desk and you say, ‘I don’t have any more work for you,’” Heim says. “A lot of them are here tempora rily. That’s not the  worst part. It’s the ones who move their families here and everything, and all of a sudden they’ve got to uproot their families and go back home. Th at’s tough.” tough.” The company has multiple trucks,  backhoes, excavators and steam cleaners. They offer roustabout services, tank battery construction and general maintenance. “There’s less wells coming on with less rigs and less work,” Heim says. “The construction has slowed down a lot for us.  We’re  We’re finding that they’re not fixi ng the margin of wells at this time. If they have troubles, they’ll shut the wells in and wait until the prices come up to fix them.” Heim says he’s using the downtime to catch up on building and equipment maintenance. “We grew faster than we wanted to,” Heim says. “This gives us time to get our infrastructure up to speed also. That’s important. And then, we’ll just take it as it comes.” GOMC

Eye on the Industry

FACING RISK HEADON Programs are changing the way the oil and gas industry looks at risk, both with equipment and people By Paul Nicolaus

“I

f there’s an asset, there’s a risk,” says Raul Vieira, VP of energy services at Bureau Veritas North  America I nc. “And “And if there’s a risk, it needs to be managed.” Risk management is a process that looks to minimize the probability and consequences of adverse conditions and maximize the probability and consequences consequences of positive events, he explains.

“The risk management program provides the assurance that the asset will achieve its goals and requirements safely and in a timely manner through the entire life cycle.” Raul Vieira

no risk to the environment in the long run, he explains. “Historically, we have been working  with risk and try ing to address it at different phas es of the life cycle of an as set,”  Vieira says. “Exper ience today indicates that the sooner you start addressing the management of risk the better, because you  become better positioned to respond.” First you try to eliminate that risk through design, then you try to reduce that risk through either design restrictions or construction restrictions, and then you try to minimize the consequences by addressing the risk that cannot be eliminated through  various integrity management processes such as personnel training, operational procedures or community outreach. MANAGING UNCERTAINTIES

A look at integrated asset management requires an assessment of the perceived risks in a variety of areas, which could include business, safety, environment, health, costs, performance or compliance  with reg ulations. Dependi ng on the ow ner of the asset and the asset itself, some of these categories of risk may take priority over others. For example, if an oil platform went up in a city and a safety issue developed, that might be perceived as a high priority  because it could impact lives that are operating on the unit as well as people living within the community itself,  Vieira s ays. If, on the other hand, a problem occurs with an offshore wind turbine, it is likely to be considered more of a financial risk because there is nobody there whose safety would be in jeopardy, and there is 24

GOMC

www.gomcmag.com www.gomcmag.com  - JULY 2015

“Every owner, every user, has a different idea or need in terms of risk management,” Vieira adds, and when it comes to the oil and gas sectors, the projects involved are often complex. As a result, they involve uncertainties that stem from a wide range of sources. “The risk management process has as a target to look at these uncertainties and manage them with an implementation program that is both holistic and detailed to deal with the individual risks,” Vieira says. “The risk management program provides the assurance that the asset  will  wil l achieve its goals and requirements safely and in a timely manner through the entire life cycle,” he adds. “It is not a static exercise, it is not a snapshot, it is not something that you do during three  years and then let go; it should be a life cycle process.”

The implementation approach is  based on a cle ar identi fication of the goal s and requirements of the asset throughout the life cycle and then a prioritization of the level of management and the effort to  be spent on each phase. “What we do is identify the risks, rank the risks, look at what the intentions of the asset are in terms of long-term goals and long-term objectives, and then decide  which risk should be dealt with as a priority priority in relation to another risk,” Vieira explains. In the past, asset management related to equipment only. only. Over the yea rs, however, this has shifted to include the people who operate that equipment and the processes used by those people. More consideration is being devoted to personnel. Even the terminology has evolved as a result of this. Mechanical integrity has changed into asset integrity or integrity management. “The coverage is much  broader,”  broader,” Vieira says. “We have ha ve to look at the human side.” side.”

“Experience today indicates that the sooner you start addressing the management of risk the better, because you become better positioned to respond. respond.”” Raul Vieira

RISK ASSESSMENT OPTIONS

Some of the most comm common on asses sment methods include technical safety, reliability assurance, project risk management,  value improving processe s, asset integrit y management and human factors. The tools and techniques depend on the type of risk that is being assessed and can vary from a high level qualitative method such as a what-if workshop to a more sophisticated quantitative method such as a probabilistic cost and schedule assessment.

“From the very conceptual phase of a project to the operational phase of a project, the measurements need to change and be addressed and be managed,” Vieira says. The idea is to have a big effort in the beginning and a minimum level of effort devoted to managing the risk during the operation of a project.  A global g lobal company founded in 1828 and a nd initial in itially ly focused foc used on the t he safety s afety and operation of ships, Bureau Veritas has evolved over the years to become one of the largest quality assurance, health, safety, environment and social accountability (QHSE-SA) consultants in the world. With operations in over 850 offices in 140 countries, Vieira notes that the company is well equipped to offer risk management services. “We feel that we are very prepared to support organizations in the identification of their risks, in the assessment of priorities, in the implementation of a risk management program, and finally in the verification of the effectiveness of the program,” he says. WORKING FOR THE INDUSTRY Petroleum Association of Wyoming helps explain rules and regulations facing the oil and gas industry By Greg Bates

I

f the members of the Petroleum  Assoc iation of Wyoming (PAW) (PAW) can bank on one thing, it’s that the association is going to have their backs in times of need. PAW has been doing that since the early 1900s. PAW is the largest and oldest petroleum industry trade association in  Wyoming. Its focus is the betterment of of the state’s oil and gas industry by providing a forum for interaction among members, the public and local, state and federal governments. “One of the real great things I’ve noticed with this group, and I’ve noticed it for years and years, we are recognized as the voice of the industry in this state,”

“There’s really a lot of different members and “There’s companies. About every major company you can think of, we’ve got Exxon, Conoco, Encana, Chevron, you name it.” Bruce Hinchey

PAW Vice President John Robitaille says. “People in Wyoming want to hear from people in Wyoming. They don’t care what goes on in Colorado. They want to know  what Wyoming thi nks. And when they a sk those questions, they look to us to answer them for t hem.” hem.” WORKING FOR THE MEMBERS

Currently, PAW comprises 196 members – 89 in the exploration and production (E&P) field, while the other 107 are consultants, lawyers and that 26

type of profession. The organization’s membership figures fluctuate depending on the industry, the price of gas and oil, and the activities associated with companies purchasing other companies. In the last six years, PAW has had a high membership enrollment of 240. “There’s really a lot of different members and companies,” PAW President Bruce Hinchey says. “About every major company you can think of, we’ve got Exxon, Conoco, Encana, Chevron, you name it.” PAW is consistently a strong voice for its members. Whatever they need, PAW employees try to provide. “We work for them,” says Hinchey,  who has been with PAW PAW for 13 years. “We have different committees: We have a public lands committee, we have a legal committee, a tax committee, a government relations committee. We meet and work on issues important to the industry. We have a chairman and they all work on issues and tell us what direction to take,  what comments we should be working on,  whether or not to support legisl ations, and stuff like that.” MAKING A DIFFERENCE

The association, which is headquartered in Casper, Wyoming, consists of a 36-member board of directors, which is  voted on by their fellow members and is responsible for improving PAW policies and positions on industry affairs. “We’re really as strong as our committee structures, because they’re the ones with on-the-ground experience and the expertise in it, and they really educate us,” Robitaille says. “Then we can

go forth and present the overall industry ideal where we get all that information and kind of funnel it into us and we can give it  back out.” out.”  Adds Hinchey, “We make m ake comments on various rules and regs or legislation or EISs or regional management plans. The EPA has some ozone standards they’re proposing and we’re commenting on those, and viewsheds, stuff like that. There’s always an issue out there that we’re  working on it seems lik e.” e.”

“We make comments on various rules and regs or legislation or EISs or regional management plans ... There’s always an issue out there that we’re working on it seems like.” Bruce Hinchey

Robitaille, who has also been at PAW for 13 years, believes the association is making a huge difference statewide and even nationwide in some instances. “I think if we look at various policies throughout the state, whether it be tax policies or environmental policies or production or what have you, I think we’ve  been involved in most of those discussions,” Robitaille says. “And we’ve presented our side as best we can and most of the time the outcome is maybe not exactly what we  want, but at least it’s a workable solution for us.” Hinchey pinpoints a couple of instances in the past where PAW really pulled through and made a difference. Nearly five years ago, former Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal was looking to develop some regulations for fracking in the state. PAW helped the effort and developed the rules th at work for for companies as well as for Wyoming. The state became the first to implement fracking and disclosure rules. “A lot of states have modeled their fracking rules after Wyoming,” Hinchey says. “I believe the federal government’s

proposed some that are very similar as well.” Prior to developing the fracking regulations, PAW was also instrumental about a decade ago in helping area residents understand and deal with split estate, where surface and subsurface rights for a piece of land are owned by different different parties. “In Wyoming, we have a sig nificant amount of split estate and a lot of that is due to two-thirds of our minerals being owned by the federal government,” Robitaille says. “Folks that have lived in this country have known about it and understand it. But we get some folks that move in that don’t really know, and so we created initially, it was called a split estate initiative, and that was a product of our organization working with similar organizations in agriculture.  We came up with a way for landowner s to understand what split estate is, and  we even worked worked out a mediation type of process process for when there was a conflict, should it arise. Later that turned into law, which was then added into the  Wyoming Oil and Ga s Conserv ation Commission rules. Tha t was reall y a big thing for us, and that’s worked really, really well.” One current issue that PAW is involved with is setbacks for oil and gas  wells and a ssociated production equipment. PAW tries to always be proactive instead of reactive when it comes to industry issues. Hinchey believes the association is a very important asset to  Wyoming. “It’s the voice of the industry,” Hinchey says. “We carry forward their message and it’s a unified message, which makes it much stronger than one that would be scattered with various thoughts here and there. It’s a good way for the organization to be represented and to be heard.” PAW is certainly being loud and clear with its message. GOMC

REINSTATEMENT MADE SIMPLE Robotic Trydent 80 pipe cutter easily opens laterals in small-diameter piping By Craig Mandli

R

elining small pipelines can be a time- and cost-efficient solution for the rehabilitation of piping systems. However, opening the lateral connections on those pipelines can sometimes be difficult, especially in hard-to-reach areas that provide limited access. The completely robotic Trydent 80 small-pipe cutting system from TRY TEK Machine Works solves that issue. The unit garnered plenty of attention among representatives from several industries at the 2015 Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport (WWETT) Show in Indianapolis in February. “We believe that the small pipe and relining market is still emerging,” says Troy Miller, a senior engineer with TRY TEK and the designer of the Trydent 80. “We’re convinced that this product can meet the needs of that market.”

“The system was designed with versatility in mind.” Troy Miller

The unit performs rein statement of interior or exterior relined pipes from 3 to 6 inches in diameter. Operators can access pipe systems through cleanout ports or rooftop vent pipes in buildings where tenants are present or utility operations that cannot be disturbed. It can be used to reinstate an entire vertical waste pipe from a single access point, as its small, powerful cutting head can maneuver around 90- and 45-degree elbows and navigate multiple bends and turns. Its reach extends up to 100 feet and its narrow 23inch width enables easy access through doorways, or easy transport on rough or difficult-to-reach terrain. It can be used to reinstate lateral pipes connected to the sewer or utility main at ground or basement level. “The system was designed with versatility in mind,” says Miller. “We  believe that it’s a fit across a lot of of different markets, including sever al that we really haven’t explored a great deal.” It has a powerful hydraulic cutting head and clamping mechanism, dual video outputs that permit digital recording, and an onboard color camera with self-cleaning lens connected to a weather-resistant, sunlightreadable video monitor. Water-powered hydraulics eliminate the potential for environmental environmental haz ards. An optional tripod carr ies the weight of hose during  vertical  vertica l reinstatement. It has simple and quick setup and operation, and operates with either 120 or 240 volt, and 50 or 60 Hz electric service. “Half of the battle when you are reinstating small pipelines is getting the unit into the proper position to cut,” says Miller. “Then you need to have enough power to make the cut. This unit provides that.” 30

While the portabil ity and efficiency of the unit make s it a fit for all small sma ll pipe systems, the option to reinstate lateral connections from a single access point inside a building sets it apart, according to Miller. “The idea of relining a vertical stack in a building has actually kept contractors from bidding on jobs because of the difficulty reinstating it after,” says Miller. “That’s the type of problem this unit was made for.” TRY TEK decided to debut the Trydent 80 at the WWETT Show because it, Miller says, “gives us the most bang for our buck.” “This is the show we were really aiming for rolling this out, and the timing fell nicely into place,” says Miller. “Not only do we talk to a lot of plumbers at this show, but also municipalities, general contractors and utility service companies in the oil and mining sector. All those have a place for the Trydent 80. No one else has what this offers in one package.” 717/428-1477;  ww w.try w.trytek.com. tek.com. GOMC

Building the Business

KEEPING KEEPIN G YOUR YOUR STAFF FOCUSED Workplace distractions can sidetrack employees from doing their jobs, but managers can minimize the diversions By Marty Martin

A

s managers know all too well,  workday distract ions are every where, stealing your employees’ precious time and productivity. Between new technologies that beg for people’s attention to the prevalence of shortened attention spans, everyone on your team may  be more d istracted today th an in i n the past. Of course, being distracted at work creates numerous problems, from missed opportunities to strained business relationships. Therefore, you need to manage employees effectively to minimize their distractions. First, realize there are two categories of distraction: internal and external. Internal distractions include any physiological, emotional, attitudinal, biological or physical discomfort. Examples include having an upset stomach or a headache, worrying about a personal matter, feeling over whelmed with tasks, task s, sitting in an uncomfortable chair, experiencing anger toward a co-worker or grieving a loss. Any of these situations can quickly take an employee’s attention away from his or her tasks. External distractions involve other people and technology. Some examples are social media and text a lerts ringing on a smartphone, email notifications popping up on a computer screen and other employees who talk loudly in the office. These seemingly innocuous items easily divert people’s attention. The real challenge is that most employees aren’t experiencing just one or two of these distractions. They’re facing work interruptions on a daily basis. On top of all the internal and external distractions, organizational structures have changed over the years, packing more duties and responsibilities into every job description. That means your employees today have to spread their attention thin 34

just to complete their expected workload.  With all a ll of these factors, it’s no wonder so many people feel distracted at work. Fortunately, most distractions can be eliminated from the workplace if you take the time to m anage them. Here’s Here’s how. Design or redesign a job from a distractibility point of view. It’s natural for a manager to blame the employee for becoming distracted, saying things like “He’s not a team player,” “She’s not motivated” or “He doesn’t work well here.” The manager may even reprimand the individual for poor performance. But

Create a distraction elimination plan. Think back to your elementary school days. You likely had a few kids in the class  who always bothered others, threw spit balls or just stared out the window for hours. What did the teacher do? She had a plan. If the kids were disruptive to the class, she’d move them up front near her. If they were window gazers, she’d position their desks so they could no longer see the  window. No matter what the disruptive behavior, she knew what to do because she had a plan in mind for it. Good managers do the same. They sit down with the distracted employee and together create a distraction elimination plan (DEP). By working together, they may decide on some physical changes in the office that can help, such as moving to a new cubicle or changing the lighting, or they may figure out strategies the employee can use to maintain focus, such as not having an email program always open or disabling smartphone alerts. The great thing about a plan is that it provides concrete references and is used as a benchmark to gauge progress. Additionally, all organizations have risk management

The real challenge is that most most employees aren’t aren’t experiencing experiencing just one or two … distractions. They’re facing work interruptions  on a daily basis.  before going that route, take a good look at the job and environment to see if it’s making the employee distracted.  What are the job duties, both the ones ones explicitly stated in the job description and the ones that person just always seems to do? What’s the working environment like?  What visua l or auditory distra ction triggers are present? How is the office set up? Is the lighting, the chair and the desk layout conducive to good work habits? What other factors impact the employee’s efficiency, effectiveness and performance? If the work environment and the  job are poorly designed, the talented individuals you bring in will continue to struggle, perhaps not because of their habits but due to the bad desig n. Therefore,  before you reprimand, reprima nd, analy ze. What you find may surprise you.

plans, strategic plans, operational plans and business plans, so why not also have distraction elimination plans? Offer other resources when needed. Sometimes, even with the manager’s help and a solid DEP in place, the employee is still distracted. In these cases, the manager has to know when to offer additional resources. If your business has an employee assistance program, you may  want to consider making a recommendation to an appropriate resource or service. If you don’t have a formal program, present the idea of additional help in a supportive and neutral fashion. You could even suggest it as a step in the DEP: “If the outlined steps in thi s plan don’t resolve the issue, then the employee will seek outside assistance in the form of a counselor or

HYDRAULICALL HYDRAU LICALLY Y DRIVEN

therapist.” The key is to help the employee find the needed re sources to determine the seriousness of the distraction.

The next time you notice employees who are underperforming, don’t immediately reprimand them. Instead, take the time to determine if there’s something you or the company can do to remove the distractions from the  workplace. Distractions don’t don’t have to be a major part of the workday. You can help minimize t hem. Remember, the fewer distractions people have, the more productive they’ll be. GOMC

By Craig Mandli The transport of water and wastewater to and from job sites often requires tools and material that can withstand harsh conditions. Several bulk transport and vacuum system options can be found below, along with pipeline maintenance and  water trucks.

Bulk Transport Benlee Super Mini  At 25 feet 11 inches, the Super Mini roll-off trailer from Benlee is Benlee is as short as a straight truck  when attached to a tractor, but has a tighter turning turn ing radius and can be maneuvered into tighter spots. It weighs 12,400 pounds and can carry up to 50 percent more payload weight by law than a roll- off truck. It can carry 20-, 30-, 40- and 50-yard-tall  boxes and frees up t he t ractor to be attached to another trailer when not in use. 734/890-6822;  www.  ww w.benlee.com benlee.com.. 1.

Buck’s Fabricating Double Rolling Roof roll-off  Double Rolling Roof   watertight roll-off containers from Buck’s Fabricating are seal tested prior to delivery. Case Studies

Liquid and Dry Bulk Transport Equipment, Pipeline Installation, Maintenance and Inspection By Craig Mandli BAG STOP HANDLES HIGH PRESSURES AT LARGE OIL REFINERY

Problem

TEAM Industrial Services was called in to take a look at a corroded, leaking water, caustic and catalyst line in a refinery in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This was a 1.5-inch line coming off a 16inch header. TEAM was able to enclose and seal the leak, but after a time, corrosion down the line from the enclosure cause d complete complete joint failure. Since it was a 150 psi line, a bag stop that could handle 300 psi inflation pressures would be needed to inhibit flow to complete repairs. Solution

TEAM needed a bag that would seal off a 16-inch line while withstanding caustic conditions and very high pressures. They purchased two custom-designed bags (one for backup) from Petersen Products designed Products designed using ballistic nylon made impermeable and corrosion-resistant  with EPDM. TEA M then built a test vessel that modeled the 16-inch 16-inch header on their premises and used pumps to raise internal pressures to 150 psi. In addition to bag integrity, they also  wanted to measure and an alyze forces on the bag’s launch tube. “The launch tube is what we  bolt onto the bag for actual in sertion and in flation,” says Scott Lominac, a TEAM TE AM hot tapping ser vices coordin ator. “It pushes the bag in a mea sured dist ance,  we inflate infl ate with liquid and/or gas and it sta ys in place for the enti re repair. A nd then it’s used to withdraw the bag.” During te sting, t he bags and launch tube held up well. Result

The bag reached design pressures and achieved a 100 percent seal that held during repair work. Line repairs were completed without substantially affecting refinery operations. “We’ll certai nly work at 150 psi again,” again,” says Lominac. “And we’ll be establishing new ra nges – we expect to use inflat able plugs at even higher  GOMC OMC pressures.” 800/926-1926; ww 800/926-1926;  ww w.pipeplug. w.pipeplug.com. com. G

Product Spotlight Constant-tension winches winches with adjustable boom add flexibility to pipe bursting process By Ed Wodalski

Grundowinch hydrostatic constant-tension  winches, av ailable in 5-, 10- and 20-ton models from  TT Technologies, are designed for var iable conditions in below-grade work, such as pipe bursting, cable pulling, sliplining, pipe pulling and swagelining.  Also available is the variable vari able speed 3-ton model for pipe splitting. “It’s another tool for upsizing lines or collapsed lines that need to be repaired,” says Kevin Nagle, national accounts manager, T T Technologies. “It gives the contractor the option of coming in with a new pipe and not just putting a patch on a problem. You can get another 100 years of life out of a new pipe.”  All winch wi nch models feature protective cable storage and a two-cylinder, 35 hp diesel engine, as well as hydraulic and adjustable booms designed for pulling liners and pipe-splitting equipment. “A remote control lowers the boom into the manhole,” Nagle says. “It’s for ease of use and contractors who deal in high production. The nice thing about using the boom system is there’s no exposed cable. If there’s a break in the line or something should happen during the bursting process, the cable is protected from coming out and injuring someone.” someone.”

The constant-tension design senses and automatically eliminates cable slack. Operational features include single-lever tension control (no gears to engage), power-assisted winch line feed and winch controls at the rear of t he unit for a safe view of the job  while the winch i s in operation. “Constant tension is needed for the pipe bursting application,” Nagle says. “You usually use the winch  with a pneumatic hammer, which is doing the work.  The w inch is just t here to keep ten sion on the front of the tool while it’s advancing through the pipe. You don’t ever want to have any slack in the winch line. “If you get slack in the bursting process utilizing a winch that’s not constant tension, the tool could run over the winch line and separate from the line,” he says. “You’d lose the connection between the pneumatic hammer and your winch. The bursting process would end at that point and you’d have to dig up your tool.”  The winch, with 2,000 feet of cable line, is mounted on a heavy-duty tandem-axle trailer with hydraulic surge brakes for safe towing. Undercarriage options include single- and double-axle models, as well as all-terrain tracks. 800/533-2078;  ww w.tttechnologies.com. w.tttechnologies.com.

Safety First

MAKING CHANGES TO THE EQUIPMENT EQUIPMENT Roll-off trailer manufacturer tries to thwart safety violations By Doug Day

G

reg Brown doesn’t like hearing about accidents involving rolloff trucks and trailers. As the owner of Benlee, a manufacturer of roll-off equipment, he knows the mistakes people make are preventable. preventable. “It’s done to save time and a nd it can end up in death. The question is what equipment designers can do to outthink the person  who is trying try ing to sidestep the s ystem,” ystem,” says say s Brown. In the 10 years he has owned the company near Detroit, Benlee has made

Wheel-checks are a simple way for drivers to check for loose lug nuts. The highly visible arrows are installed in a pattern on each wheel.  The arrow on a loose loose nut will be out of position so drivers can do a quick visual check before hitting the road.

42 improvements to its roll-off equipment, many of which were aimed at improving the safety of its roll-off trailers. The company is now offering new safety devices at their cost to help prevent two common types of incidents. In a six week span s pan in the fall of 2014, 2014, Brown says he heard of two cases involving power lines and two load-height accidents, resulting in two deaths. “It’s sad, because people know  better.  better. In the electrocution, the person just  wasn’t careful, he wa sn’t sn’t watching wh at he  was doing.” doing.” A driver killed  when his load hit an overpass may have survived if he had  been wearing his seatbelt. Roll-offs have large  warning stickers about power lines. Benlee is now offering a new 12-inch-square “Look Up” sign with a bracket that mounts directly behind the controls. “It’s right in the operator’s face,” says Brown. It is available at Benlee’s cost of $25. Also available at cost ($95) is a set of lights that point upward to help operators see power lines in the dark. “Our equipment carries heavy loads,” says Brown, “so we are very focused on safety.” safety.” Benlee has served the scrap industry for decades and now provides fleets of roll-off equipment for the tar sand industry, such as in Pennsylvania and Canada. Besides owning Benlee, Brown has scrap

metal recycling companies in Raleigh and Goldsboro, North Carolina, so he uses the products he manufactures. In fact, one of his own drivers escaped injury when he hit an overpass on a customer’s property, but it cost the company plenty. “I just got the bill for an enormous amount of money.” He says audible hoist alarms are often disabled by drivers or not connected on trailer units, because the noise is annoying. Benlee now offers an amber blinking alarm light and hoist up switch ($80) that is mounted on the driver’s side of the trailer and visible only in the rearview mirror. It isn’t isn’t a bother and clearly reminds the dr iver that the hoist is raised.

“The question is what equipment designers can do to outthink out think the person who is trying to sidestep the system.” Greg Brown

Brown says Benlee is always seeking safety improvement ideas from customers and has reduced risk in other ways, including remote operation of controls to prevent injury in case of equipment or hose failure. The company also added a “dead man” button to make it easier to operate truck and trailer brakes. To make proper settings, a driver usually has to get out of the cab, climb back in and then get out again, which increases the cha nce of injury. injury.  With the dead dead man button, button, the trailer brake is set in the cab a nd the operator operator only has to exit once. “When you hold the button in, it disengages the trailer brake. Let go and the  brake is engaged,” engaged,” explains Brown. Benlee also offers a simple product called a wheel-check. The brightly colored arrows are installed on wheel nuts after they are torqued. If the nut comes loose, the  wheel-check will be out of a lign and eas ily seen during a wa lk-around inspection. Benlee’s new safety offerings are available from its online store at Benlee.com or by phone at 734/722-8100. GOMC
