Pastor’s Pen
And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists,
and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of
ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,
Ephesians 4:11-12, NKJV

In short form it means “called and accountable.” God has set aside some to be pastors and teachers
and each is accountable for training the members of the body of believers to do the ministry and
advance the kingdom of God. In the last few days we have seen that vividly portrayed at FBC,
Blanchard.

Approximately four months ago the Personnel Committee and I began the search for a new student
minister. The search involved looking at numerous resumes, interviewing candidates, praying for
God’s direction, and listening attentively to where He led. He led us down many paths, often to teach
us lessons and remind us of the necessity of absolute dependence on His guidance. As we look
back we see clearly how He led and the affirmations He provided.

Joshua and Beth Shirey came to our church on May 17-18 in view of a call as our new student
minister. They met with the staff, youth committee, youth Sunday School teachers, youth workers,
parents and the youth. On Sunday morning Joshua shared his testimony and we saw His passion
and devotion to the Word of God. Following our morning service our church unanimously asked
Joshua to come as our new student minister and he accepted. Now, we are anxiously looking
forward to their arrival in June and beginning their work with our youth.

While we met on Sunday, a body of believers met in Sebring, Florida. Four months ago Lonnie
stepped out in faith seeking where God wanted him to serve. Now Lonnie, Mari, and Alex will be
serving in First Baptist Church of Sebring, Florida.

We send Lonnie to a new place of service with deep appreciation for his devotion to our youth. I am
certain God will continue to grow him and use him in mighty ways there. We welcome Joshua and
Beth as part of our ministry team and church. I am also certain God is going to do a mighty work
through them not only in our youth, but in our entire church.

Thank you, Lord, for your love, provision, and guidance.

Keep the faith.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR ANNUAL MISSIONS FUND-RAISERS – On May 9 we held our annual
missions auction and fish fry at the church (see pictures below). Together, these two events brought in over
$20,000 (before expenses) in spite of heavy rain, hail, and a power outage during the missions auction. Thanks to
some quick-thinking volunteers, we were able to set up a generator and lights (readily available because of our
chainsaw ministry). This enabled the auction to proceed even though the electricity was not restored until after
midnight. The missions fund-raising weekend also brought in $203 from bake sales and over $1,800 from food
sales during the Poke Salad Festival on Saturday. All of these combined events (along with the earlier fishing
tournaments) netted over $18,000 of supplemental support for mission causes sponsored by our church (including
the Belize Mission trip taking place in early June). We appreciate the efforts of Melvin Moses and Paul Hayes,
along with a host of other volunteers, who each year make these missions fund-raisers such a great success. And
we also thank each of you who participated in the fishing tournaments and those who purchased auction items, fish
dinners, baked goods, and other food items during this special weekend. Without each of you, our mission
fund-raisers would not have been the great success that they were.
Our Disaster Relief Chainsaw Ministry responded to yet another natural disaster this past month. Our crew was
dispatched to the Tupelo, Mississippi, area and helped with cleanup following tornadoes that downed trees and
damaged homes. This ministry, which is made possible by your gifts to the Faith Promise Offering, continues to be
a blessing to the participants as well as those who are helped by this ministry. Here is a summary of Michael
Burkhardt’s report to the Louisiana Baptist Convention regarding the work that was done: Gospel was presented 5
times to about 30 people and 1 Bible was given; 6 jobs (2 tarping & 4 chainsaw/skid steer;) 7 person crew put in 133 man
hours. Below are some pictures from the work that was done in Mississippi (including one which shows our “new”
skid-steer loader put to use in that ministry for the first time). Our chainsaw ministry also helped with the clean-up
of downed trees and limbs on the church Recreation Complex on Mother’s Day weekend after a storm blew
through our area on May 9.
Another ministry supported through the Faith Promise Offering is our
Missionary Residence. Recently we provided lodging there for Craig &
Elizabeth Liscom (see photo). Craig is a church planter with the North
American Mission Board. He currently pastors Changed Life Church in
Omaha, Nebraska. He and his wife traveled here in May to attend his
graduation from Louisiana Baptist University. Craig reported to me that
he had just completed his first year as pastor of this new church and that
they had seen 36 people come to Christ thus far. We were grateful to
provide a place for the Liscoms to stay while they were in this area and pray for God to continue to use them as
they serve in Nebraska. The Liscoms are another example of the kinds of missionaries supported through our gifts
to the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering (which is also a recipient of the Faith Promise Offering). It continues to be
a matter of concern that we are way behind our FPO goal for the current year. Please join us in praying about this
deficit, and let’s ask God to continue to meet the needs of the ministries supported through the FPO.

A NOTE FROM LONNIE:

For the past almost 10 years, I have been blessed to be the student pastor here at FBC
Blanchard. I consider it a great honor and privilege to have served as a minister in the church
where I grew up.

For the past 5-6 months, Mari and I have been praying for God’s directon. That has led us to
First Baptst Church in Sebring, Florida. Please pray for us as we make the transiton from
here to there.

To all the parents, I thank you for trustng us with your students. I hope that you know that
we care about your children and have worked hard to point them to Christ.

To all the volunteers over the years, thank you for your willingness to serve. Not only have
you been my partner in ministry, but you have been my dear friends as well. God has used
all of you in a mighty way.

To all the students who have passed through the student ministry (or are currently in the
student ministry), I want you to know how special you all are to me. Thank you for all the
blessings you have given me over the years. I will miss you all very much.

To the church family, thank you for all your support and love over the past 31 years.

God bless you all,

Howdy Folks,

Well, here we are going into June. Man, this year is absolutely “flying”!!!! Especially when you are busy.
And believe me, May was very busy for all of us.

The second week in May is always Poke Salad Weekend in Blanchard and a very busy time for all of us at
FBCB and Cross Brand Cowboy Church. As usual we had a lot going on.
There was the annual Fish Fry and Auction on May 9th, which by the way, took
place without electricity. But it went very well; God took care of us and
everyone had a great time. It didn’t stop the bidders at all. The next day was the
Poke Salad Parade. Thanks to all of you who came and participated in it. For
those of you who missed it, our unit consisted of a trailer with our Chuck Wagon
on it then a non-rider trailer with several of our folks on it followed by our horse
riders. I hope everyone noticed our canvas top now has our logo hand painted
on it. Our thanks go out to Mr. Kyle Turner who owns and operates
N-Style Design for doing such a fantastic job.

We apologize for the fact that we had to cancel the Race for His Grace Barrel Racing event because of the
storms on Thursday and Friday. But rest assured we do plan to reschedule it along with some other events that
are in the works. Pray for us as we plan. Watch for the announcements in our weekly Order of Worship.

Remember, we meet every Thursday night with the service starting at 7:00pm and be sure and come to our
Potluck Supper on the 2nd Thursday of the month beginning at 6:30pm. Hope to see you there.

Sunday Worship 8:15 a.m., 10:30 a.m., & 6:00 p.m.
Sunday School (for all ages) 9:15 a.m.
Wednesday Prayer Service 6:30 p.m.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is
eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus
and believe in your heart that God has raised Him
from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart
one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth
confession is made unto salvation.

Sin separates us from God. God offers forgiveness
through belief in the life, death and resurrection of His
Son, Jesus Christ. Accepting God’s offer of salvation
means we are saved from an eternity separated from
God.

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the
life. No one comes to the Father except through
Me.”

For those of us who were blessed by hearing the
preaching of the Word of God by Colin Wilson on
May 18th, I think we have to agree that it was an on-
time message from an on-time God. Thank you
Colin for the message and the heart with which it was
delivered.

Our organized visitation will be on June 10th, but this
does not mean you must visit on that day. I realize
that this time may not be good for you or maybe for
the people you are led to contact. In this day and
age we are all aware of the fact that many people
work and week days just aren’t the best time for
visiting them. For those folks it might be better to
plan a visit with them on the weekend. Or you may
want to contact them by phone and set a time to go
for a short visit. The important thing is to let people
know that they are important to us. So the time set
aside for organized visitation can be a time for visits,
phone calls or even writing cards to be sent out by
the church. I will be here at the church from 3:00 to
6:00 on June 10th for you to come by and pick up
whatever you need in order to make some contacts.
If you choose to make Sunday School contacts, that
is fine; but please let me know what contacts you
make.
