CHICAGO — Tom Glavine   joined pitching’s most prestigious club with a vintage performance, changing speeds and fooling hitters in the manner that made him one of baseball’s best.   The stylish left-hander earned his 300th victory last night with nervous family and friends looking on from near the Mets’ dugout on the firstbase side. an 8-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs. “I think the feeling right now is probably relief,” Glavine said. “At some point in time, I don’t know when, the historic side of it will sink in. I know the company I’m in, and I’m as proud as can be to be in that company.” Wife Christine Glavine wiped tears from her eyes as Billy Wagner retired Mike Fontenot on a grounder for the final out. Glavine, who watched from the dugout, came out in a warmup jacket and exchanged hugs and slaps with teammates. He then hugged his children and his wife, giving her a kiss, received congratulations from his parents and waved to the crowd. “It’s over with now,” he said after hugging his youngest son. Glavine (10-6) became the 23rd pitcher with 300 victories, the first since former teammate Greg Maddux reached the milestone in 2004 while with the Cubs.

AKRON, Ohio — Firestone always seems the perfect place for   Tiger Woods to show his best stuff. This year, the timing could not have been much better. In the final event before the final major of the year, Woods buried Rory Sabbatini and the rest of the field yesterday at the Bridgestone Invitational for an eight-shot victory, sending his confidence soaring as he left for Southern Hills and the PGA Championship. “This might just give me a little more confidence,” Woods said. It was a commanding performance on a challenging course, reminiscent of some of his major victories. He was determined to play the final round without a bogey, just like the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, and Woods showed more emotion over saving par with a 12-

He was the only player to finish under par at Firestone; the only other times he had done that were his two U.S. Open victories. And after turning a one-shot deficit into a six-shot lead on the front nine, Woods left everyone else playing  for second.

Busch, who missed the Chase last season after qualifying in 2004 and 2005, hadn’t been in the top 12 in points since a 100-point penalty for reckless driving in June knocked him six spots down to 17th. Now he’s back and on his biggest roll of the season. He turned a 13-point deficit behind Dale Earnhardt Jr. into a seven-point edge. “The big picture is we’ve got a few more races to go until Richmond,” Busch said.
