Clover Corner

You Want Me To Do WHAT??!!
“We’re here!” Dad said. We came to a stop in front of a huge metal building. Finally after three long hours of driving we were there! My heart started pounding. “Come on”, Dad said, “let’s go get some practice.” “Okay” I said. I took a deep breath, grabbed my bow case, and jumped out of the car. “I’m so glad I get to shoot ten yards this year instead of moving up to twenty like Ms. Michelle wants me to.” “You’re going to do great.” Dad told me. “Thanks Dad” I said smiling. First, we signed in then we immediately started practicing. I did pretty well in practice. Then I went and sat down to wait for that dreadful… yet wonderful moment when the competition would begin. Will I be able to shoot 30 arrows? What if everyone does better than me? What if I miss the whole target? These were the thoughts running through my head while I sat there watching other kids practice. “Okay” Dad said, coming up to me, “It’s starting. First they’ll announce the twenty yard shooters, then they’ll announce us after a whole list of rules” “Okay” I managed to say. After listening to the rules, they started announcing the twenty yard shooters. All of the sudden, I heard them call my name! I looked over at Dad he looked at me. “Come on” he said, “let’s go tell them it’s a mistake.” So we walked over there. My stomach was churning and I felt almost sick. “Sir” dad said, “there’s been a mistake. She’s supposed to shoot with the ten yard shooters.” “Well” the man said, “how old are you?” When I told him I was twelve he said, “Then you’ll be shooting twenty. Sorry.” Then just like that, he turned and walked away. At that moment I wanted to punch him in the face but I refrained. “Well, all we can do is shoot” Dad sighed. “But Dad, I’ve never shot one arrow at twenty yards in my whole life!! My pins aren’t even sighted in for 20 yards!! And the twenty yard shooters have to shoot sixty arrows! I’ve never even shot thirty!” “I know but there’s nothing we can do.” he told me. “I’ll be right back” I said. Then I turned and ran out of the shooting ring, hiding my face and holding back a stream of tears. What am I going to do?! I asked myself over and over. I can’t do it. Well, Mom came after me and told me that I COULD do it, that God made us Overcomers, and I WILL do it. So, I turned around and walked back into the arena, grabbed my bow, and then with the blow of a whistle the competition was on. Sixty arrows later, there I was… hot, tired, and very proud. I didn’t miss the whole target once and even scored a 402! I shot seven 10’s, nine 9’s, and fourteen 8’s! So, on average, I scored about twenty points a round. Later, the results came in and I found out that I placed fourth in the state! So it goes to show, keep God in your sight and 20 yards won’t seem too far. I want to thank my mom for convincing me I could do it and the Australian guy that helped me pull arrows and tally up scores. He made me smile and laugh when I felt like crying. Patriots Challenge Won By Shane And Richard Mcknight
By Terry Sympson, Jackson Hill Marina

Shane and Richard McKnight took the advice of another Jackson Hill guest Steven Mann, a Disabled Marine Veteran, to fish the Patriots Challenge. He told the two that he knew that they would win and his prediction was spot on. Their 16.99 lb sack included a 4.77 kicker that turned out to be the big fish for the day and put them .30 ahead of second place team N. Dee Williams and Brooklee Raney with a weight of 16.69 lbs. Anglers James Merrill and Sam Lofton came in third with 16.52 and Bucky Willis and Rocky Biscamp rounded out the top four with 15.92. While fish continued to be caught on a number of patterns most were caught on soft plastics fished very slow. A Texas rig with a light weight or weightless Senko worked best if you could get away from the wind. Throwing to the shoreline grass and slowly working it through 1 to 4 feet of water seemed to work well with this area holding a lot of bass. The lipless cranks fished down the edge of the grass also produced fish. This is going to be the pattern for awhile with Rayburn red, brown craw and chrome with blue or black. Because of the number of cold fronts coming through fish were also caught staging off points fishing with Carolina rigged

From sea to shining sea – BassCat Owners Invitational on Sam Rayburn
By Patty Lenderman, TheLakecaster

It has been forty two years in the making for BassCat boats, and each year they host an owner’s tournament to celebrate their boats, their brand, but most importantly their customers. Over 500 anglers representing twenty six states converged on Sam Rayburn April 4-5 from California to North Carolina, from Wisconsin to the Texas Gulf Coast. A windy cold front settled in East Texas a day prior to the tournament that kept temperatures only in the 50’s during the day with wind feeling like it was straight off of an iceburg. There’s an old saying in this area that if you don’t like the current weather, just wait 15 minutes and it will change. On Friday, the final day the weather turned around and warmed up into the 70’s wrapping up this great event. Backing up just a little, the staff and crew of BassCat arrived Monday April 1. Tuesday and Wednesday were registration days at Rayburn Country and the whole community was already busy with contenders coming in. Motels were full,

restaurants were packed, convenience and tackle stores were all hopping with business. Representatives from Mercury Outboards were on hand as well as Scott Jordan of Jordan’s Marine in Vidor, TX for any questions or to handle any issues anglers had. Alan Ranson of Strike King lures provided over 500 goodie bags filled with thousands of dollars worth of Strike King products for the participants. The tournament kicked off Thursday, and after each boat had a livewell check they were cut loose at safe light on the hunt for big bass. The weigh in began at 1:30, and Rick Pierce, Vice President of BassCat Boats emceed the ceremonies. The list of competitors included a host of ‘tough sticks’, known for their tournament prowess and success. Winners would be determined by a culmination of their two day weights. It all began in 1971 in a little town called Mountain Home, Arkansas. Ron Pierce had a great love of fishing and a huge dream of

Bass Stocking Research on Toledo Bend
By Dan Ashe (Texas Parks and Wildlife Department)

The state of Texas began stocking largemouth bass in 1941 back when TPWD was known as Texas Game, Fish, and Oyster Commission. From 1941 through 1971 only northern strain largemouth bass were stocked into Texas public waters. In 1972, TPWD began stocking lakes with Florida largemouth bass and since then has stocked 325 public lakes. TPWD stocks Toledo Bend almost every year with Florida largemouth bass with at least 500,000 bass fingerlings per year. In the past Florida largemouth bass were stocked to either increase the allele frequency (number of Florida largemouth bass genes) of the existing population, to supplement limited recruitment, or help recover from a catastrophic loss of fish. Currently, TPWD Florida largemouth bass stockings are justified

for lakes that have proven potential for producing trophy fish and we stock to increase the numbers of fish capable of obtaining larger sizes. Florida largemouth bass are capable of growing more rapidly and reaching larger sizes than northern largemouth bass. In most years nearly 15 million bass are requested by the TPWD management districts, with just 6-10 million fish actually produced and stocked. It is because of these shortfalls and total cost, that TPWD must become more efficient with its bass stockings and still obtain our objectives. There are two routes that TPWD can go to increase bass stocking survival – 1) To stock larger fingerlings which increases costs and reduces total hatchery production numbers, and 2) To stock in areas that offer the most protection from predation and forage, and ultimately increase chances of survival. Obviously, the cheapest most practical route as of now is to figure out where to put these fish to get the most bang for the angler’s dollars. On average it costs about 25 cents to produce a single bass fingerling and when we stock 500,000 fingerlings per year in a single lake the cost quickly adds up ($125,000/year). Again, it boils down to a numbers game and even if we gain a 1% increase in survival for our stocked fish the numbers begin to become significant for larger fish available to fishermen. Factors that may reduce survival of stocked bass fingerlings include hauling stress, lack of prey once stocked, and predation by other fish or by larger bass. From previous studies it is fairly certain that mortality of stocked fish from hauling stress is minimal. TPWD studies have also found that stocked bass were feeding within 12 hours of being stocked, however it is uncertain if stocked fish were as successful at capturing food as bass that were not stocked or reared in a hatchery. A study was conducted by TPWD at O.H. Ivie Reservoir where it was estimated that as much as 25% of largemouth bass fingerlings that were stocked were eaten by other fish, mainly other bass within 24 hours of stocking. It costs nearly 25 cents to produce a bass fingerling, the state stocks roughly 10 million bass a year at a cost of about three million dollars. No doubt

each lake is different and will also have different rates of predation for stocked fish; however the O.H. Ivie study should serve as a sledge hammer between the eyes that every effort should be made to ensure that we are not stocking fish to only serve as fish food. Habitat likely affects survival and predation of stocked largemouth bass more than any other variable. TPWD protocol is to stock largemouth bass into the best inshore habitat available at multiple sites with stocking locations no closer than 2 km apart. TPWD has begun a project where we stock fish into different vegetation types on Toledo Bend to determine contribution rates to ensure that we indeed are stocking bass fingerlings into areas that will provide the highest degree of survival and success. Additionally, we will determine the diet make-up of stocked fish in different vegetation types versus that of wild fish. This study was begun in 2010 and should last for two more years. This spring you’ll likely see us on Toledo Bend quite a bit while we are selecting our study sites. As always, if you should have any questions concerning this article or have any other fishery questions please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or call me at 409-698-9114. Rayburn tough, Wilson & Bebber tougher at Bass N Bucks
By Patty Lenderman, The Lakecaster Photos from this event available at www.thelakecaster.com

East Texas Lakes were all bustling the first weekend of April with multiple tournaments commencing simultaneously. Bass N Bucks held their fourth Sam Rayburn Spring Series event April 6 at the Umphrey Family Pavilion. Forty one teams participated and the top three enjoyed winning thousands of dollars in the guaranteed payback. Patrick Cascio took the Big Bass lead early on during the weigh in with his 7.65 lb catch. As more teams began to weigh, the overall leaderboard showed that it was a tough bite on Big Sam.

„ John Lemaire and Phil Ransonet caught the 2nd place limit weighing in at 19 pounds even.

When the scales closed at 4pm, Kris Wilson and Charles Bebber won the tournament with their 21.41 lb limit. “We caught the majority of our fish off of Carolina rigs, but one of our weigh fish came off of a bed.” They were using Carolina rigged Senko’s and brush hogs for their catch, targeting secondary points in 8’ depths. “It all happened in the morning. We had a limit in the boat within 30 minutes.” It wasn’t until later when they caught the bedding bass, making their one and only cull. “We gained about two and a half pounds with that one.” It was an all-important cull, putting them about two and a half pounds ahead of 2nd place! Bass N Bucks presented them with the guaranteed 1st place check for $8,000. Charles would like to thank God, Leslie and Hannah Rain while Kris would also like to thank Jaime and Preston. John Lemaire and Phil Ransonet won 2nd place weighing in 19 pounds even. They worked hard for every pound, trying a lot of different areas on the lake. “We had a limit around 8:30, but it was small.” Using spinnerbaits and swim jigs, they kept their lures in 5’-12’ depths. “We ran a lot, a whole tank of gas worth of running.”

„ Kris Wilson and Charles Bebber won 1st place and $8,000 with the only limit brought in exceeding the 20 lb mark. They made three culls to better their weight, the last one at 2pm. “We were actually hunting some deeper spots, but I looked over at one area as we were going by and just decided to throw into it,” John explained. He cast his bait into shallower water than what they were targeting, and to his surprise caught a nice 5# fish. “We exchanged a two pounder for that one and gained three pounds.” They received the 2nd place guaranteed check for $4,000. John was also the highest finishing participant with a Foremost Insurance policy through the John Salamone Agency and garnered an additional $500. 3rd place winners Todd Littleton and Daniel Chambers enjoyed a $3,000 check after a long

day working windy banks. “All of our fish were shallow. We used a lot of different baits. Two of our fish were caught on Texas rigs, and that was the most fish caught on any one bait.” They made one cull, increasing their total weight by a pound for a total of 17.67. They would like to thank H&W Marine, Mercury and Triton Boats for their support. Patrick Cascio’s 7.65 lb bass held as Big Bass of the tournament. “I was fishing an area filled with timber and a sandy bottom,” he explained.

Using a ½ ounce jig in 10’ of water, she bit about 11am. Patrick usually fishes with his son in law, but had to wrangle this big bass to the boat on his own this day. Bass N Bucks presented him with a $400 check for his nice catch. Anglers accrue points in each event they are in, according to the weights they bring to the scales. Exercise safety when conducting wildlife management
Robert Baker’s (Texas Parks and Wildlife Department)

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” was first said by Henry de Bracton (English jurist 1210-1268). This saying applies to a lot of things in life and especially to conducting management activities for wildlife. Poor or misguided management activities can cause considerable damage to equipment, land, or people. Using safe practices up front can prevent some consequences down the road. This article will help to shed some light on the things that should be looked at before and during these activities to ensure that everyone and everything come through safely. All terrain vehicles (ATV’s) and Utility vehicles (UTV’s) are common place in wildlife management today. Unfortunately, they are also a major source of injuries to people, and when repeatedly ridden along the same areas, a source of damage to the land. All ATV or UTV users should attend a safety course approved by the

Texas Department of Public Safety to train them on the proper use and control of these vehicles. When using these vehicles a helmet, boots, and proper clothing (long-sleeve shirt, gloves, and long pants) should be worn at all times. Proper gear will prevent operators from getting cuts, scrapes, and burns when using the equipment and help prevent more serious injuries if an accident occurs. Trailers of all types are also included in equipment that should be properly used to manage wildlife. These are used to haul equipment, debris, materials, etc... There are many important safety tips to take into account while pulling a trailer. Make sure that the tow vehicle and trailer can handle the load. Make certain that safety chains are used to attach the trailer to the tow vehicle in case the hitch fails. Loads should be secured correctly so that they can’t shift during travel. Trailer lights should be

present and working to help warn other vehicles of what is happening. Operate at safe speeds for both the vehicle and trailer. Not all vehicle and trailer combinations can operate at all speeds. Last but not least follow all traffic laws. More information about towing trailers can be found at the websites for the Texas Department of Public Safety www.txdps.state.tx.us or the Texas Department of Transportation www.txdot.gov and at their local offices. These are some other general safety tips for equipment such as tractors, chain saws, and brush cutters to name a few. Read the owner’s/ operator’s manual from cover to cover before operation (well anyway read it all in one language). This allows the operator to learn about what safety features are present, how to use them, how to use the equipment, and how to maintain it. Using all of the safety equipment with the particular piece of equipment will help

reduce accidents and injuries from operation of a piece of equipment. Operate machinery at the correct speed to reduce wear and tear on the machine, user, and land. Properly maintain equipment before and after use. Proper maintenance helps the equipment to be easier to use, ensure proper operation, and give better end results. Another aspect to safety is taking time to learn something about the operation in question. There is an opportunity to do just this on May 18th at Martin Dies Jr State Park starting at 10am and ending around 3:30 pm. Topics to be covered include fawn growth, bobwhite quail management, predator research in regards to wild turkey in East Texas, aquatic plants and their control, wildscapes and urban interface, and invasive species. This event is free and lunch will be provided. To attend call the Texas Parks and Wildlife Office at (409) 384-6894 and register before May 16th to ensure that food and seating is available. Safety is a key part of any attempt at managing wildlife. Doing things the correct safe way may take a little extra time, but it will ensure that the outcome is better and the people who put in the effort are around to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Stay safe and get outside to enjoy the nice Spring weather. Life is more fun outdoors.

Q: Why does the wind seem to die down at night?
A: The simple and quick answer is that there’s no sun, says Brent McRoberts of Texas A&M University.“Wind is a form of energy and it gets much of its strength from the sun,” he explains.“You can think of wind as a huge river of air over land, and it does this day or night. But as the sun rises and starts heating up the ground, rising warm air mixes with slower air near the ground and with air moving faster that is above ground. This fastermoving air is pushing downward, and it creates windy and breezy conditions as the day progresses.”

Q: So what happens at night?
A: When the sun starts to set, this mixing of conditions doesn’t happen as much, so the winds start to slow and eventually die down.“Remember that hot or warmer air expands and rises,” McRoberts adds.“At night, the ground begins to cool. Air closer to the ground cools by radiation, so there is a lack of heat and energy and these directly affect air currents. So the winds at night and in the early morning hours are usually the weakest. But remember that cold fronts and storms can occur and these directly affect wind speed, too.”

Cutting boards: uncommon sense
A few years ago someone suggested that it is “just common sense” that a porous wood cutting board must be harder to keep clean than plastic. Never mind that for the last 10,000 years of animal husbandry and probably a few hundred thousands of years of hunting before that, folks have used wooden surfaces to cut up their food and game. So, you know the battle is on. Marketers see an opportunity to sell more plastic cutting boards. The wood industry, and particularly those who make butcher block tops, have their backs to the wall and need proof that time-tested cutting boards are actually safe. UC Davis conducted one of the first scientific tests. They tried, as closely as possible, to recreate the kind of use people would normally put plastic or wood cutting boards in their own kitchens, also testing multiple cleaning methods that would be typical. Their conclusions? “We believe that food can be prepared safely on wooden cutting surfaces and that plastic cutting surfaces present some disadvantages that had been overlooked until we found them,” according to the results published at http:// faculty.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/faculty/docliver/ Research/cuttingboard.htm It seems that new cutting boards, wood or plastic, perform about the same, but that once plastic is cut and scuffed up by normal use, it becomes harder to clean and harbors bacteria, whereas a wooden board, even when well-worn, seems to inhibit harmful organisms from growing. While some folks criticized their testing methods, the UC Davis folks also state, “We have received multiple communications from school children who have done science projects that have reached essentially the same conclusions that we did.” Go, kids! And another study about salmonella outbreaks—a study that was not directly researching cutting boards at all—revealed that people using wooden cutting boards were less than half as likely to contract salmonellosis than those using synthetic (plastic or glass) cutting boards. UC Davis researchers said, “We know of no similar research that has been done anywhere, so we regard it as the best epidemiological evidence available to date that wooden cutting boards are not a hazard to human health, but plastic cutting boards may be.”

If you want to learn more about safe food handling, go to http://www.foodsafety.gov/ They do recommend using one cutting board for fresh produce and bread and a separate one for raw meat, poultry, and fish. This will prevent bacteria on a cutting board that is used for raw meat, poultry, or seafood from contaminating a food that requires no further cooking. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has some of the strictest codes for restaurant food handling, and they also approve of wood for cutting boards and other restaurant food equipment. So, if you were lucky enough to inherit Grandma’s bread board or Grampa’s butcher block, enjoy.

WHEN TO HOLD’EM AND WHEN TO FOLD’EM
by Pro Guide, Joe Joslin
Hello, Anglers. Weather and fishing big bodies of water are strongly connected. There are times when it is just stupid to be on the lake. If you have read my columns with any frequency you know that I seldom make those kinds of statements. However, having just witnessed a couple of guys who put their lives at risk for no apparent reason makes you wonder what some people are thinking if they are thinking at all. Recently, I was talking to my clients at the boat launch at dawn following the passage of a very strong mid-spring cold front the night prior. I had already decided that we either would find another boat launch in a more protected area or cancel the fishing day completely. Before I made a final decision, I drove out on a point overlooking the lake and witnessed huge (4-5 foot swells) waves with winds so strong it was rocking my heavy Tundra. Since my clients were from the local area, we decided to cancel the trip and reschedule. Now, back to the two guys. By this time it is after 7 a.m. and no one has launched at the ramp which is located just off Highway 255 on the Texas side of the dam. This is a good, 3-lane public boat launch but it is very exposed to strong north winds. Several fishermen drove to the boat launch area that morning but did not launch and drove off. However, two guys in a mid-sized bass boat did launch. It was so windy that the wave action had the entire cove area muddy and even in the cove the boat driver was having trouble maneuvering the boat in order to pick up partner who parked the truck. They motored out toward the open lake but then turned around and came back so I assumed they were going to do the wise thing and put their boat back on the trailer. Soon after this I left the launch and headed back to the lake house which is located a few minutes from the launch. I then received a call from one of my clients who had been sitting on the look-out point watching the rolling swells. They told me that the same two guys did actually try to head north up the boat lane before realizing that they were over-extended....to say the least. My clients reported that the swells were so large that the guy’s boat would almost disappear between swells. The fishermen then tried to turn the boat around which in such big waves, is not an easy procedure and their boat did appear to take on water, according to our clients. However, the good news is that they did make it back into the cove. Another huge lack of judgment was even in those conditions, neither had on a life jacket. Simply unbelievable! If you fish a large body of water on a regular basis, sooner or later you will find yourself in a situation that is much more dangerous than anticipated. Part of that is due to the fact that winds on the lake are usually 5 to 10 mph more than over a land mass so it is easy to under-estimate the impact of winds on the larger lakes such as Toledo and Sam Rayburn. Also, as one who spends a lot of time outside, I have observed that weather sources often miss the forecast of wind velocity as these are difficult to forecast especially winds on our lakes. It is also important to know your boating abilities and the limitations of your boat being careful not to exceed either. In turbulent water conditions, it is important to keep the boat’s bow (front) up and some boats have more bow lift than others. Several of the major boat companies offer boats with excellent bow lift and my Skeeter 21 FX is certainly one of those. This aids in minimizing the spearing of oncoming waves since the front of the boat is up and on top of the wave. So it really comes down to staying on the side of caution while using your experience and common sense. Three other factors to consider that will push the odds in your favor if you do find yourself in more rough water than you bargained for: The first is a no-brainer...always wear a good life jacket when main motor is operating. Over 80% of drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket. The second is to make sure your boat has two....yes...two bilge pumps with one being an auto unit where it is activated when the float is submerged and the other is a manually operated unit. Buy large units such as a 1500 gph (gallons per hour) on the auto and at least a 750 gph on the manual. Two units will bilge the unwanted water out quicker plus if one fails you will still have one working. If my bilge pumps are not working, I do not launch my boat. It is that vital in my way of thinking. The final is to not under-power your boat with an engine that is smaller than the maximum rated horse power. A smaller engine might be fine in ideal conditions but if you get in rough water and take on a wave that suddenly adds several hundred pounds of weight to your rig then you are dead in the water with the smaller engine struggling to keep the boat on top of the rough seas. Whereas, a larger engine could help keep the boat on top of the waves until bilge pumps have time to dump some water. Hopefully, these reminders will help keep you as well as your family and friends safer on the water. God bless and good fishing.

Toledo Bend yields good fish for Bass N Bucks
By Paul Hayes Photo’s from this event are available online at www.TheLakecaster.com

April 13, 2013 - The Bass N Bucks Toledo Bend Division tournament #4 of 5 spring series was won by the team of Todd Castledine and Billy Howell with a total weight of 28.43 lbs. They also had the big bass of the tourney at 8.08 lbs netting them a total of $4430 for the day. Their best fish came from Kicker brand swim baits fished in the back of a cove where the water was clear and calm. The team wishes to thank first and foremost Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, sponsors Kicker Fish Lures, Legend Boats, Power Pole, Mercury Engines, Combat Lures, Hydrowave, Sabine Lake Inn, Bass N Bucks, Betty and Stoney Howell of DSDS for their support. Second place was won by the team of Jaret Latta and Brian Lowrance with a five fish stringer weighing 25.44 lbs with a kicker fish of 6.51 lbs which garnered them a $2500 paycheck for a day of fishing. Most of their fishing was done in shallow coves on the south end of the lake while throwing small creature type baits in mostly watermelon red colors. Jaret said the bite was slow until the wind picked up around 9:00 a.m. and that seemed to turn the bass on to feed. He said, the Rogue rods that he uses makes the difference in

feeling a sometime rather soft bite or missing a fish. Both anglers expressed their thanks to Bass N Bucks and the Sabine Lake Inn for a great tournament. The team is now in tenth place overall for the TB division. Third place was nailed down by Chad Dyess and Michael Crawford with a total weight of 20.97 lbs. According to the team the bite was really tough due to the high blue skies all day but they managed to find some good quality fish in 12 -15 feet of stumpy water. The baits of choice were Texas and Carolina rigged worms and medium running crank baits fished in areas of calmer water out of any wind. The team earned $2000 for their efforts. Fourth place was won by Jeremy Burge and Kraig Wellborn with a weight of 20.63 lbs earning a paycheck of $1000. This weight also put them in the top position for the Angler of the Year race in the BNB Toledo Bend series. Second big bass was won by the team of Jody Holt and John Taylor weighing 7.30 lbs and earning them a sponsor prize of $150 plus $842 for fifth place. There were 54 teams that fished Saturday and 160 fish were weighed in with 159 being released alive back into the lake. The avg. fish weighed 2.86, avg. number of fish per team

was 2.96 and avg. weight per team was 8.31 lbs. Total fished weight was 456.91 lbs. Tournament director Bryan Davis said he wanted to thank the Sabine Lake Inn for providing them with weigh in facilities with a short notice. “First class all the way’, he said,

‘we will be coming back here again”. This tournament was number four in the TB spring series with the next tournament to be held out of Big Bass Marina on June1. The website for Bass N Bucks is www.bassnbucks.com. „ Castledine and Howell won Big Bass honors with a nice 8.08 pounder.

„ Third place was won by Chad Dyess and Michael Crawford with a 20.97 lb. stringer.

When Dreams Come True Arkansas team wins 1st place at Bass Champs on Sam Rayburn
By Patty Lenderman Photo’s from this event are available online at www.TheLakecaster.com

Bass Champs payback just keeps getting more incredible. In the fourth of five tournaments for the East Texas Region on April 13, 2013 anglers enjoyed a whopping 122% payback percentage. Arkansas anglers Scotty Villines and Charles Jones championed the event taking home over $20,000. Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend have been pounded with multiple events running simultaneously, but 140 teams chose Bass Champs to stake their money in and $46,550 was paid back to the top 20 teams in cash and prizes. Sam Rayburn is in great shape, only just a little more than a foot below full pool. Weather conditions were picture perfect with temperatures in the upper 70’s and not a lot of wind. After a full day of fishing, the teams began to trickle in to the scales to weigh their catch. Charles Jones and Scottie Villines brought in the heaviest three fish limit of the day weighing in at 17.50 lbs, anchored with a 6.12 lb kicker. They had driven eight hours from Arkansas to participate in this event and it paid off big for them. “We started off fishing in shallow water, and caught several small bass,” Jones explained. They decided to head to deeper water to see if better bass were there. “We fished a big flat that had some brush on it next to deeper water.” The

flat was 14’ deep and dropped out to 30’. Using Strike King 6XD crank baits in a citrus shad pattern, within 30 minutes they boated a limit. “Scottie caught all three of our fish. It took us until 1:00 to put a limit together. We caught a small one in shallow water, culled it, then at 2:00 he caught our kicker.” Oddly enough, Charles had a dream the night before. “I dreamed we won this tournament. I could see it clear as day. On stage, being presented with all of the 1st place winnings. I didn’t tell Scottie about it until after he caught our second keeper. After he caught the big one, I told him we may actually have a chance at winning this thing!” Bass Champs presented the duo with the guaranteed 1st place check for $15,000. They were also the highest finishing team in a qualified Skeeter boat for an additional $5,000 check. Sure Life rounded out their day with another $200 for using the product in their livewell. Martin Elshout and Mark Price made a good run at 1st place, winning 2nd with their 16.49 lb limit. They too started out in shallow water and obtained a small limit using frogs and speed craws. “We decided to head to deeper water and threw Carolina rigged brush hogs on a point.” That’s when Martin caught the Big Bass of the tournament, weighing in at 9.44 lbs. “Mark

„ The dream became a reality when this Arkansas team of Scotty Villines and Charles Jones caught 17.50 lbs to win the tournament and take home over $20,000. caught our next best bass on another point using the same bait. After that, we probably caught twenty more, but nothing over 2-1/2 lbs.” Their 2nd place win got a check for $5,000. Having the biggest bass of the tournament they were awarded another $1,000. They were wearing Under Armour and Costa Del Mar sunglasses, each worth another $200 check for a total payday of $6,400. 3rd place was won by Rusty Clark and Cory Rambo with 14.40 lbs. “We had a good day. We stayed on points ranging from 12’ to 15’ deep and used Carolina rigs and football jigs.” Rusty caught their first fish, a five pounder, on

Texas State Honor and Remember Planning Memorial Day Weekend Honors Ceremony
“Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifice.” President Harry S. Truman Pr Memorial Da Day Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country. The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. Today, 145 years later, Memorial Day, as it later named, remains one of America’s most cherished patriotic observances. The spirit of this day has not changed - it remains a day to honor those who died defending our freedom and democracy. The origins of special services to honor those who die in war can be found in antiquity. The Athenian leader Pericles offered a tribute to the fallen heroes of the Peloponnesian War over 24 centuries ago that could be applied today to the 1.1 million Americans who have died in the nation’s wars, including more than 600 Texans who have died in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Now, the Memorial Day observance is coming to a small rural community in the piney woods of East Texas. Honor and Remember of Texas headquartered in Jasper is hosting a Memorial Day weekend Honors program, May 24-25, in Jasper, Texas. “On behalf of Texas Chapter of Honor and Remember, I hope everyone will consider and agree to support and participate in this worthy event, says Roy James, Texas State Director of Honor and Remember. “This is an opportunity to pay tribute in a way like no other, to honor and remember the ultimate sacrifices made by our Texas fallen heroes,” adds James. “It is our belief that when you honor others you honor yourself, your families and your communities. A full slate of activities is scheduled for the two-day observance, including a car show “Hot Rods and Heroes” featuring the POW / MIA Honor Car from Anchorage, Alaska, the presentation of personalized Honor and Remember flags to families who have lost a loved one in defense of the United States –dating back to the attack on Pearl Harbor at the start of World War II to the latest causality in Afghanistan. Bikers are invited to join the Honor and Remember Heroes Bike Run in honor of our Texas Fallen Warriors “It is our goal to establish a two-day honors ceremony event in Jasper to pay appropriate tribute to our nations’ fallen soldiers from all military conflicts and wars and specifically to our Texas fallen warriors,” points out James. “To honor and remember our soldiers’ service, duty and personal sacrifice along with the sacrifices of their families.” Personalized Honor and Remember flags will be presented to family members of military personnel who sacrificed their lives in places like Pearl Harbor, Germany, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. Flags will also be presented to families of the Ft. Hood shooting. In United States’ history, there has never been an official national symbol that specifically recognizes in gratitude and respect the ultimate sacrifice made by members of the U.S. military. The Honor and Remember flag was created for that purpose. The personalized hand embroidered flags include the rank, name, KIA date, and place of the fallen .This national organization was created in 2008 and presented over 1000 flags to families of our nations’ Fallen in 2012, dating back to 1777 at the American Revolution. Other weekend highlights include: * Honor and Remember Flag Presentations to Families of our Texas Fallen Warriors * Field of Honor – Courthouse Square : Wreath Presentation – Veterans Memorial •T Texas Fallen Heroes Memorial Wall •T Texas Chapter 2 – Rolling Thunder • East T Texas Patriot Guard Riders •V Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) members • American Legion members •W Wounded Warriors from Iraq and Afghanistan • American Honors Military History Display • Family Reception hosted by Jasper City Council • Butterfly Release - Jasper Arboretum and Outdoor Learning Center •T Tour of Jasper County Historical Museum •T Tour of ‘America The Beautiful’ Art Show -East Texas Regional Art Center • Field of Honor – V Veterans Memorial Ceremony at Jasper County Courthouse • Heroes Luncheon – hosted by W Woman’s Civic Club of Jasper – Families of the Fallen • Special presentation to Arm Army 4th Brigade 10th Mountain Division – Ft. Lobi 2013 Toledo Bend
By Paul Hayes Photo’s from this event are available online at www.TheLakecaster.com

The 2013 Louisiana Oilmen’s eighteenth annual Bass Invitational tournament was held April 5 & 6 on Toledo Bend reservoir out of Cypress Bend Marina. While it did not set any records it was still a great success. You cannot help but admire the workings of the infrastructure and the dedication of the LOBI staff which puts on this tourney every year, and like the oilmen they are their system runs like a well-oiled machine. With 371 teams fishing for two days the tourney generated a lot of money for two well deserving charities, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Miles Perret Cancer Services which was added this year. A total of $100,000 was donated to the charities for their generous and untiring research to find cures for cancer. Hank Perret spoke to the crowd of over 1000 and explained some of what their organization does for cancer patients. “No one pays a dime for care at our facilities; all of our support comes from generous donors like you. We receive no government help”. Hank said that the center in Acadiana expects to serve over 2500 people this year alone and that words could not „ Charlie and Jimmy Hickman made a big move on the final day of the tournament, coming up from 14th place on day 1 to win 2nd place overall.

really express the family’s gratitude for all of the support which they have received from LOBI and their sponsors. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital opened in 1962 and was founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas. Its mission is to find cures for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and from around the world. On average, 5,400 active patients visit the hospital every year and upwards of 250 patients are treated daily. Located in Memphis, Tennessee, the center is world acclaimed for its research and advances in medicines and cures for children. All of their findings are shared with the worldwide community. The weather on both days was rather windy but a lot of 5 fish limits were brought in both days. Big Bass on day one was caught by D. L. Bertrand and weighed in at 8.96LBS. He and his partner Mark Hebert were not able to capitalize on the catch though and finished out of the top twenty but had the second largest bass overall. The leaders on day one were Ricky Madole and Dustin Boyt with 27.08LBS anchored by a solid 6.21LB kicker. They located their fish on deep

„ Ricky Madole and Dustin Boyt stayed on top of the pack both days of the tournament to win 1st place with 40.82 lbs water humps with little grass on them and were able to entice them to hit crank baits. The fish were feeding on shad and a shad colored deep diver was a logical choice to use. Their closest competitor was the team of Wendell Wright and Tommy Cosenza with 22.46LBS and Chris and Mike Ortego with 21.51LBS. On day two the morning started out near

windless until around 0830 when the wind started up and continued to blow all day with the temperature staying in the low to mid sixties for most of the day. To many of the competitors fighting this wind was the hardest part of the day and it showed by the numbers of fish brought to the scales. A lot of limits of smaller fish were brought in resulting in a change in

„ Jim and Steven Binns made the biggest move up in the standings of them all. Starting out in 50th place on day 1, they brought in over 22 pounds on the final day and launched to a 3rd place overall finish.

the leader board. Day two ended up with Madole and Boyt on top with 40.82 total weight. The shad had moved off the hump so they had to search for more fish only bringing 13.74LBS to the scales. “We would like to thank our wives for their continuing support and always being there for us. We also wish to thank the staff of LOBI and the entire fine sponsors who support us”, said Madole. The same sentiments were echoed by his partner Boyt who also added that they are more than happy to support St. Jude and Perret cancer centers. Second place was nailed down by Charlie and Jimmy Hickman with 38.73 anchored by a 5.25 big fish, coming up from fourteenth place on Friday. “We fished mostly plastics on spots with very little grass throwing Texas rigged worms” said Charlie. Jimmy added that “the wind was a big factor in our fishing today and we had to fight it all day”. The team said they wanted to

thank all of the sponsors and staff of LOBI very much for putting on a first class tournament. Third place was nailed down by the team of Jim and Steven Binns with 35.52LBS with a great kicker fish of 7.24LBS which also earned them the number six spot for big fish. They had finished Friday in 50th place and the second days catch was over 22LBS vaulting them into third place. “Carolina rigged worms and other plastics” were their baits of choice to use in catching the large stringer of fish. The areas they fished were not holding grass but instead had sandy bottoms on windy points. Big bass was won overall by David Gunter with a 9.44LB beauty followed closely by D.L. Bertrand’s 8.96. Mike Roper from HB Rentals was the presenter of the awards with first place receiving $3000, second place $2000, and third $1500 with places being paid down to 150th.

Fishing Forecast
The top water bite will be early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Break out the Yellow Magic and Ribbit baits to start with. The lily pads and some of the grass will be breaking the surface making for some great fishing as the fish get into the summer pattern. This is a time that you get to watch your Lynn Atkinson bait as you work it across the surface of cell 979-220-0251 the water waiting for that Big Ol’ Bass Reel Um N Guide to come up and clobber it! It’s the most Service, exciting time of the year for some. The www.rayburncountry.com wacky worms and senko’s will catch a lot of fish in the shallows around the grass and pads for folks that love to work the bait slowly. As the grass continues to grow, working the edges with a Stanley spinner bait then letting it drop off into the deeper water can put fish in the boat and cover a lot of water. Chunking a crankbait off points and creek ledges is a good way to pick up some nice fish. Some fish will slide off to deeper water and set up off points and humps. That can be a whole lot of fun and a chance to use lots of different baits, from a crankbait to jigs and or a Carolina rig. Don’t overlook the Stanley Football jigs around some of the ledges and creek channels. There’s one thing that you really need to look at when working this kind of bait, that’s the rod you’re using. If you don’t feel the bite, you’re not going to set the hook. That sounds simple. The bite can get so light that you won’t feel her pickup the bait. A big fish is like a big vacuum, it can suck a ½ oz jig off the bottom of the lake and you can hardly feel it. What most people feel is the fish spiting it out and you feel it as it drops to the bottom. Bottom line is don’t cut yourself short here, a good rod and sensitive line is a must. The Team Series Rod from American Rodsmiths is one that will get the job done. These rods have the sensitivity that you need to feel these light bites. Remember these bites can be very light and the fish will not hold on long. When you first feel that little tap you’ve got to set the hook, don’t wait to feel the weight. This will change some so you have to be on your toes to keep up. The Crappie are starting to setup on the brush piles and can be a lot of fun for all. Remember to be careful when fishing the brushpiles – don’t drop your anchor in the pile so you won’t tear it up when you pull your anchor up. The pontoon has been doing great with lots of room and fun for everyone. Gather up your fishing buddies and give me a call to get your trip booked for the summer. I hope everyone has a great time out there and please be safe on the water. God Bless!

Mid Lake & South End
Top Water action on Sam Rayburn! The bass have spawned and are now feeding again and setting up for the summer. Lots of the fish here on Sam Rayburn never leave the bank, and for anglers that don’t fish here a lot that is kind of hard to believe. But, it is the truth! With all the flooded hay grass, Stephen Johnston, pepper grass and hydrilla there is no Cell# 409-579-4213 reason for the bass to leave all that good Johnston’s Guide cover that is rich with bait. With that Service being said there are fish that live on [email protected] main lake points and ridges that have no grass and no timber. But these fish feed on shad and the shad are always on the move and that puts the bass on the move looking for them. Let’s start off by talking about the shallow fish, and baits that will work for them. Yellow Magic, Pop R, Strike King Spittin’ King, and V&M buzz baits are all good baits to start with on the edge of the flooded hay grass and on the edge of the hydrilla. Occasionally, there will be holes back behind the hydrilla and hay grass, and when you find one, that is when it’s time to pick up your V&M buzz frog or Strike King KVD hollow belly and start working it in and around the hole. These holes are often caused by bream which are spawning there, and that is why it’s a great place for you to catch a big ole bass . . . they wait at the edge of the hole to get a quick meal. Also when you see the pepper grass matted to the surface this is also a great place to work your frog around. A frog is just about the only bait you can work easily around the pepper grass without hanging up and spooking the fish. Now for the outside edge of the hay grass and hydrilla - this is where your Texas rig, wacky-worm or Senko style baits will come into play. On the Texas rig I like to use a 1/4 weight with a V&M Pork Pin in red-bug, june-bug or crabapple color, same colors for the wacky rig, just switch over to the V&M Trickster worm. On the stick style baits I like to use a V&M Chop Stick in watermelon red, watermelon seed or blue gill colors. All these colors are good as long as the water is clear. . . if you hit a bank with more stained color then go to a black-blue or black-red color, those are the best in the stained water. Let’s talk about the main lake points and ridge fish. These fish, for the most part, feed on shad so keep that in mind when you are picking out a color to use. It’s best to start with a Strike King 5 or 6 XD crank bait in a sexy-shad, chart sexyshad or splatter back color. After you have tried that, go to Texas rigged 10’ worm in red-bug or plum colors. These fish will generally stay in from between 10 to 15 feet of water. Also in these same areas you can work a V&M football jig, the little wire or the new “Heavy Hitter”. The new “Heavy Hitter” is made with a flipping hook, for some of us that like to swing a little harder! Well that should get you fishing and catching, on Big Sam this month. Remember you can stop by Needmore Tackle Store on your way to the ramp on Hwy 255 for the best selection of all of the above baits and more of your favorites too, and if they don’t have it, they’ll be happy to special order it for you; let ‘em know I said so! And if you would like more info about baits, techniques, or the lake in general, give me a call (409-579-4213) or send an email ([email protected]) to schedule a guided fishing trip on Sam Rayburn or Toledo Bend, we can hook you up!

Patriots Challenge Hosts Fishing with Heroes Weekend at Jackson Hill
„ Hero Ric Cantu and Volunteer boater Gary Martin showing off some nice fish

„ Group photo of our Heroes and Volunteers

Eight combat Wounded Warriors were treated to an all expenses paid weekend of fishing, food and fun courtesy of Jackson Hill’s Patriots Challenge and local volunteer fisherman. The event started out with overcast and breezy conditions on Saturday and continued Sunday with a good spinner bait bite for most of the

teams while others reported baby brush hogs, senko’s and lizards were all working as most fish were in or near shallow water spawning areas or just off main and secondary points for most of the day. Several of our Heroes had little or no fishing experience and for them the steady action in shallow water was particularly „ Volunteer V boater Dean Perkins of Broaddus, TX and Hero Jayson Legg with a good catch.

exciting. Perry Curry of Broaddus had Abu “Pacman” Pakrawan as his Hero co-angler and enjoyed showing him just how exciting fishing for bass on Big Sam Rayburn can be. “It is really fun to take out someone who has never fished before and to watch how excited they get” Curry said. Jayson Legg currently stationed at Fort Polk was blown away by the entire weekend. He said that it was hard to express how grateful he was not just for the fishing, but for the way everyone treated them as if they were family.” I just can’t express what this has meant to me personally and to the other guys lucky enough to be here at Jackson Hill” he said. “Many people talk about supporting the troops, but all of the people involved with this event have bent over backwards to make sure that everyone of us have a great time”. The event was hosted by Terry and Connie Sympson from Jackson Hill and Robert “Buck” Collins and Chuck Williams from the Wounded Warrior Association of East Texas. The entire group of Heroes and their Boaters were treated to a rib eye steak dinner on Saturday night and included some prize drawings for donated items. “ Weekends like this allow these guys to sit around and talk with other people who are going through similar difficulties weather it is recovering from the physical or emotional scars of war or the hardships faced trying to transition from warrior to civilian” said Buck collins who had to face months of therapy from traumatic brain injuries himself. “Talking with each other brings out so many issues and helps to release the fear that we all face

from our unique experiences. I don’t know why being out fishing and just hanging together in the outdoors works so quickly and is so therapeutic, but it really does. Collins added “Lifetime memories and friendships help us heal inside and out and I am so grateful to all of the boaters who have spent their time and money to take us fishing and offer us their knowledge and friendship, it means so much to all of us”. to see more about this event you can go to Jackson Hill Marina on facebook. The Patriots Challenge is a program of Jackson Hill Park and Marina and a growing Network of Sponsors, Partners, Volunteers and Organizations that work together to provide greater understanding, appreciation and access to the Natural Resources of Deep East Texas and Sam Rayburn Lake. Their purpose is to do economic good for the local lake communities and to do social good by raising funds and offering outdoor recreational opportunities for worthy charitable causes and people in need. Manning’s WIN on Nacogdoches!!!
By John Watts

„ Larry & Carol McMinimy took 2nd place in this tournament with 9.04 pounds. This matched the second place they took at the first tournament of the season on Toledo Bend.

„ Don & Mona Manning took top place honors with their limit of five fish weighed 9.17 pounds. Mona also had the big bass of the tournament, a 2.08 pounder. The couples of C.A.S.T. Southeast fished their fourth tournament of 2013 on Lake Nacogdoches. This was the first time C.A.S.T. has ever had a tournament on Lake Nacogdoches. Lake Nacogdoches is not a normal bass tournament destination due to the Texas Parks and Wildlife’s slot limit of 16 to 24 inches. Catching numbers of bass below the slot and culling up to a winning weight is part of the challenge in this kind of tournament. Another strategy is to fish for BIG fish measuring over 24 inches. The latter almost guarantees a win while the former is easier to produce. Which strategy to employ was the big question of the day for the couples. Lake Nacogdoches has an exceptional population of bass lending itself to catching numbers of fish Don & Mona Manning captured their first C.A.S.T. win of 2013 on Toledo Bend in February. While a fish over 24 inches was not in the cards for anyone in the tournament, Don & Mona did WIN and wrangled the Big Bass of the day weighing 2.08 pounds. Working back and forth on a specific stand of reeds with watermelon gold swimming flukes, their limit of five fish weighed 9.17 pounds. On a day when weighing in a 10 inch fish was legal; the Manning’s put together an average weight of almost 2 pounds per fish. Congratulations on winning two tournaments already! Coming close in the win column has become a theme this season for Larry & Carol McMinimy. Taking 2nd place in this tournament with 9.04 pounds, matches the second place they took at the first tournament of the season on Toledo Bend. Adding those finishes to the third place they won on Sam Rayburn last month has put Larry & Carol in the lead for the regional Anglers of the Year race. With just two tournaments remaining on the regional schedule at Sam Rayburn and Lake Nacogdoches, overtaking this couple could be a huge hill to climb. Good job guys! Can you keep the lead to the end?!! Keeping up with the trend in previous and former tournament winners, Clint Wade & Stacy Spriggs, who won the season opener on Toledo Bend in January, took 3rd place honors at Nacogdoches using weightless flukes to catch 8.62 pounds. Clint & Stacy also had a limit of fish. As a matter of fact all couples who fished Nacogdoches caught a limit of fish. Catching fish is not the issue on this quaint east Texas lake. Bringing one of the numerous big fish to the scales is where the challenge lies. Nice job Clint & Stacy! We’ll see you both soon! Fishing a lake with a slot on it is challenging. Many people shy away from a challenge like this, as keeping every large fish is

„ Clint Wade & Stacy Spriggs, who won the season opener on Toledo Bend in January, took 3rd place honors at Nacogdoches using weightless flukes to catch 8.62 pounds. immediately gratifying, while working to upgrade one inch or one ounce at a time takes time and strategy. Also, when your goal all year is to catch the biggest and best fish in tournaments is paramount this type of tournament is somewhat contradictory to the norm. Some people openly voice frustration over immediately releasing a five to seven pound fish that would on a standard regulation lake be placed straight into the livewell. The sporting part of fishing doesn’t always fit the standard or the norm, its meeting this challenge that keeps all of us coming back to the lake week in and week out. We’ll see who is up to the challenge at the final two events. C.A.S.T. Southeast would like to thank the sponsor’s who have supported our region and organization this year: Skeeter Boats, Yamaha Outboards, Strike King Lures, Kistler Custom Rods, Biobor Fuel Additives, ProRule Measuring Boards, Stowaway Marina, SavePhace, Santone Lures, E2 Baits, PowerTeam Lures, and Monarch Trophy & Awards. Each of these fine businesses are the first choice of C.A.S.T. and the Southeast Region for all our fishing and boating needs. The fourth tournament in the Sam Rayburn series was held Sunday April 14th out of Sam Rayburn Marina. A total of twenty one (21) teams participated and brought in thirteen (13) limits of fish to the scales. There were a total of 77 fish caught and released alive thanks to careful planning by the Ignition Bass Directors Ian Coleman and Rayburn series director Jim Brockman. The fish were carefully handled by the anglers and the weigh in crew with all of the fish being placed in a treated holding tank prior to release. The total weight was 150.32 lbs. with a 1.95 avgerage. The tournament was won by Jeff Stimits and Clint Lipham with a weight of 14.50 which included big bass of the tournament which weighed 6.68 lbs. They earned a total of $1560 which included an American Rodsmith gift certificate. Jeff said the big bass took a Fluke fished up in a cove. They also caught fish on Carolina rigs over deep humps and along shallow grass lines in the coves. With the win today this vaulted them from fourth to first in the Rayburn

division standings. Clint thanked their sponsors American Rodsmith, Bowden Marine and Elite Tungsten Weights. They also wanted to thank G and S trolling motor repair for repairing their broken trolling motor the same day to get them ready for the tournament. Second place was won by Larry Weppler and Dennis Fikes with a weight of 11.11. All of their fish came from grassy points on Carolina rigs. They pocketed a check for $700 for their efforts. Third place was taken by the team of Mark Couch and Ronnie Milner with a catch of 10.74 following pretty much the same pattern as the other teams did. The next tournament is scheduled for May 19 and anglers can sign up to fish at the Tackle Monkey between 4:30 and 7:00 P.M on the Saturday before the Sunday tournament. The championship will be held on Sept. 21st and 22nd. For more information visit www.IgnitionBass.com

I like poppers including Chug Bugs, Pro Pop (Bill My Favorite Fishing Hole Norman) and Yellow Magic as well as Frenzy Walkers and and May is going to be Zara Spooks. Weightless soft plastics continue to be effective also. The lake level is the including Berkley Havoc new bait ‘The Jerk’, plus Flukes and best in years for May and a 5-inch Senkos. I also like Norman’s Triple Wing buzzbait there is plenty of grass and Stanley’s Compact spinnerbait which has a slightly down here on the southern end. There are some areas where smaller profile that I like in late spring. In May I also increase my use of crankbaits including we have submerged hydrilla as deep as 16 to 20 feet with pepper grass growing in 4 to 12 feet so we have plenty of Norman’s DD22s and DLN (Deep Little N) working the DLNs cover for the bass. We had a great spring as far as big bass go on shallow ridges and humps and using the deep diving catching numerous bass over 6 pounds with a couple of 8’s, DD22s to probe the deeper stuff. I use nothing but Berkley a 9.2 and a 10.1. Toledo continues to produce awesome bass Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon line (10 and 12 lb test) on as well as crappie, catfish, white bass, bream and yellow bass. crankbaits plus a 7’ 3 inch Veritas (Abu Garcia) medium This month topwater patterns will be at their best with action cranking rod and Revo’s Winch baitcast reel. Use lots of pauses when cranking in clear water. CRAPPIE/BREAM/YELLOW BASS: There are still crappie that can be caught early in May by strolling the edge of deeper grass (12 to 18 feet) plus they also are starting to go to deeper brush tops as well. Bream are bedding this month in 2 to 6 feet so look in coves for their beds and back off and cast crickets into the beds. Yellow bass can be caught by locating schools of largemouth schooling and then throwing a small spoon (1/4 and 1/2 oz) underneath them. Good fishing and God bless!! By Teresa Casey, Jasper Master Gardener and Cindy VanDevender, FCS County agent
long holding times in transit, and have been force ripened with ethylene gas. Before you panic, let’s explain that ethylene gas is naturally emitted by many kinds of fruit. Ancient Egyptians found that adding certain ripe fruits to bins of green figs would speed ripening, so the practice of force ripening has been around since the Pyramids were young. The point being, however, that force-ripened doesn’t taste as good as fruit allowed to ripen in the field. Clues to tell exactly when: twist & turn. Tomatoes, cantaloupe, and citrus are all examples of fruit that turn loose from the stem when ready. Lemons, for example, may turn yellow long before ripe. Gently grasp from below and twist slightly – if it’s ripe, it will come loose in your hand. If it resists your gentle tug, let it stay a few more days. To find the sweetest oranges in store bins, look for those that have been pulled off cleanly; for most citrus varieties, a cut stem still attached means it was taken before it was ready. Watermelons, on the other hand, don’t release cleanly. What you want there is a cut stem that still looks fresh, not dried and withered. The bottom should have a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun rather than being picked early. Oldtimers swear by thumping. If it sounds solid, it’s not ripe. If it sounds thick, it’s too ripe. You want a hollow resounding thump for a just right watermelon. What we’ve talked about so far are all fruits (yes, technically a tomato is a fruit) so you are looking for sweet and juicy. What about veggies? Veggies are another story and many can be eaten at any stage of development. Matter of fact, people pay a premium for baby carrots and pearl onions. If you sow seeds too thickly, thin as needed and don’t hesitate to cook and enjoy your early harvest. Baby vegetables are tender and delicious. Zucchini can be harvested from the size of your pinkie finger on up. Matters of fact, some people don’t even wait that long and will harvest the blooms, batter and fry them. Most summer squash are harvested when four to eight inches long. Sometimes you miss a day or two at harvest time and wind up with a Hippo-Zini. It’s still edible, no matter how big. It may be tough and cottony, and you’ll want to cut out the large seed section, but you can chop and cook the rest. Try boiling until tender, drain and add chopped tomatoes, peppers, onions and grated cheddar. Add fresh herbs and garlic as desired. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes or more and you have a great side dish. When you have more of anything than you can eat, there are several methods of preserving your harvest, with canning and freezing being the most popular. Both methods are simple, safe and satisfying if done according to the latest recommendations. Some experts recommend using canning books with a copyright date of 2004 or newer because food preservation is an ever-changing science. New varieties are being developed, and at the same time, new strains of micro-organisms are appearing. To be sure your canned foods are safe, always use scientifically tested and proven recipes and follow directions meticulously. Many a home canner has thought they might improve their food by reducing salt or using sugar substitutes to make it healthier. What they don’t realize is that sugar and salt both act as preservatives (in addition to the heat from canning) and that the results of changing a recipe may not taste good, and may not be safe. You can find recipes that do call for less salt, or you can drain and rinse canned vegetables (including cans from the store) to have less salt. And there are entire cookbooks devoted to lowsugar or no sugar canning, so find a recipe and follow it exactly.

is iT ripe YeT?

One challenge for new gardeners and grocery shoppers alike is knowing WHEN fresh produce is ready and at the peak of ripeness. That’s important for flavor and nutrition, and for preserving by canning or freezing. In today’s tough economic times, it is important to eliminate waste and get the most bang for our grocery bucks. Estimates say as much as 40 percent of produce is discarded due to spoilage, but this can be prevented or reduced by properly storing what you buy or harvest once it’s in your kitchen. A good rule of thumb is to store it like you buy it. If it is refrigerated in the store, it should be at home as well. Bananas, potatoes and onions belong at room temperature; grapes and lettuce in the fridge. Storing in plastic bags is never a good idea. Too much humidity causes early rot. And use the first in, first out rule: food that is stored too long may still be safe to eat but lack in taste and nutrients. An old rule with a new exception is “Always wash your fruits and vegetables” but the FDA says fresh produce packed and sealed and labeled ready to eat are safe to open and consume without rinsing.

For frugal and health conscious people, farmers markets and home gardens are a great way to get produce at its peak of freshness and nutritional value. Foods picked too soon and then shipped and stored for long periods of time suffer in quality and lose much of their vitamin content. It is also comforting to know that your family is consuming food grown with less chemicals and pesticides than found in commercially raised foods. The problem is that many people were raised on canned soup, frozen entrees and take-out meals. If they are trying to make the switch to fresh and locally grown foods, they don’t know what to look for at the store or when to harvest their crops. Appearance and smell are two biggies – fresh strawberries and cantaloupes should smell sweet and enticing, and fresh green produce should look crisp, not wilted and yellow. But what about a tomato? Color alone is not a good indicator. How many times have you sliced a nice red tomato that has no flavor at all? Commercially grown tomatoes are often varieties that can be picked green, have thicker skins for

Canning does have initial start-up costs, but once you have acquired the necessary equipment it is quite inexpensive to maintain and the rewards are many. You will have real summertime freshness and taste during the cold winter months, and the satisfaction of knowing you are serving dishes with fewer additives. And really, nothing feels as good as gazing at row upon row of beautiful jars full of food you “put by” all by yourself. Freezing is also popular and works especially well with things like blueberries and peas. With berries there’s always a lively debate: to rinse or not to rinse. Rinsers say they want the fruit in the fridge to be clean and ready to eat or dump in a smoothie. Non-rinsers say it makes the skin tougher and that it’s quicker and easier to freeze dry, rinse later. With peas, it’s blanch or not to blanch? Blanching means you bring a big pot of water to a boil, and dump in the peas for anywhere from a minute to five minutes, then drain and freeze. Some people call this parboiling, but parboiling means the food is almost fully cooked. What blanching does is stop the aging process, There is an enzyme that peas emit even in the freezer that can give the thawed product an “old”

taste that some people find objectionable, and that’s the reason they blanch. Non-blanchers say that the process boils off some of the nutrients that get poured down the drain, they can’t taste any difference, and it’s more convenient to dump in ziplock bags and toss in the freezer. What do food safety experts say? They say either way is safe and effective. Try both and see which you prefer. There are many wonderful resources out there to get you started, including the internet. You can also ask questions at the Jasper County Farmers Market, every Saturday morning 8 to 11 am in front of Tractor Supply (Hwy 190 & 96 in Jasper). Master Gardeners usually hold one or two canning seminars a year, and if you have a group and a kitchen to cook in, they can help arrange a class to get you started. Our Texas A&M AgriLife office (upstairs over auto registration) also stocks a comprehensive book called “So Easy to Preserve” by the University of Georgia that covers canning, freezing, dehydrating and pickling. Call us at 409-384-3721 for more information. We will be glad to help you with scientifically tested recipes and up to date information.

It was an excruciatingly long wait for Alex Finch of Lancaster, Texas. He weighed in his 9.90 lb bass during the 8-9:00 hour on the first day of the Big Bass Splash on Sam Rayburn. Having fished several Big Bass Splash tournaments in the past, he was notably excited when he brought this fish in. “I finally get to weigh in a big fish!” Sharing the moment with founder Bob Sealy was of utmost importance. He would not even get the fish out of his boat until he knew Bob would be there to see it. It was placed on the scales, and led the tournament for the next two days, just waiting for the scales to close for the last time. Sam Rayburn is well known for producing double digit bass, and there were a lot of hooks in the water. Anything could happen. “I found her two days before the tournament,” he explained. “Me and my buddy guarded the spot until the tournament.” It was in a small pocket, about halfway back next to a creek. “Friday morning we got to the spot about 5am, anchored, and turned off all of our electronics and just let everything get quiet and settled.” At 6am when the tournament officially began, he took his watermelon red 4” Fat Jack tube bait and threw into the 4’ depth he had seen the fish

„ Alex Finch of Lancaster Lancaster, Texas is crowned Champion of the 29th Annual Sam Rayburn Big Bass Splash in. “I think the male picked it up first, but two or three casts later she picked it up and started swimming off with it. I set the hook and my buddy David Tyroch was ready with the net!” He strategically waited for the bonus hour where he would garner an extra $1,000 for biggest fish of that hour having the official T-Shirt. “I wasn’t really worried the first day, because I just knew someone would come in with one over 10 pounds,” Finch continued. On day two when he was still in the lead, he began considering the possibility that he could win. “I went fishing the last day, but couldn’t catch a fish!” His mind was drifting with possibilities. The last few hours he stayed near the scales watching with ever increasing earnest. His wife and son were with him and also sitting on the edge of their seats. As the last seconds were counted down closing the scales for the final time, relief, excitement, elation flooded over him as he was declared Champion of the 29th annual Big Bass Splash on Sam Rayburn.

„ The bass that won it all was caught the first morning of the three day tournament. It was a long wait for Alex Finch to be declared Champion with his 9.90 catch.

„ Walter Land won 2nd place overall with his 9.51 lb bass caught on day two of the tournament.

„ The last man to slide into the top five was Johnny Dewald with his 9.28 lb catch for a 3rd place finish.

Each day a $5,000 bounty is offered for the first 3.00 / 4.00 / 5.00 lb exact weight bass. The $5,000 checks are guaranteed to be paid out, so the ones that were not claimed by catching the bass were put into an open drawing and every angler who was registered to fish was put in the pool. “But you have to be present to win!” Bob Sealy reminded everyone. Four lucky anglers, some who had not weighed a single fish, won the remaining $5,000 by drawing of all of the entries in the tournament. 2nd Place – 9.51 Walter Land Cleveland, Texas- 2013 Dodge Ram Truck, Legend Alpha 199 powered by Mercury, equipped with MinnKota & Lowrance, PLUS $5,000 cash. His fish was caught on a deep point, 16’, with a Kicker Fish High Tail blue fleck floating worm. 3rd Place –9.28 Johnny Dewald Zavalla, Texas 2013 Legend Alpha 191 powered by Mercury, equipped with MinnKota & Lowrance, PLUS $2,500 cash. Dewald did not catch this fish until 1:05, and had little time to spare to get it to the scales before the tournament was complete. 4th Place -8.70 Benjamin Craven Colmesneil, Texas- 2013 Dodge Ram Truck, PLUS $1,500 cash. “Friday we got beat up in Five Fingers with the wind. Saturday we got to our spot and it didn’t take long before the magic started to happen. It was a day that every fisherman dreams of, where all the fish that bit were drag strippers. I thank God for this opportunity!”

„ Mark Price wrapped up the top five with his 8.56 lb catch.

„ This 8.70 lb’r caught by Ben Craven held up for a 4th place overall finish.

Craven caught his fish on a 10XD crank bait. 5th Place -8.56 Mike Price Mansfield, LA.$10,000 cash. “We had been throwing crank baits, but then a bunch of schoolies came up. I threw in a floating worm with a split shot and caught my fish!” The Big Bass Splash, which is always a family affair, offers a little anglers division of their own. Sponsored by Academy Outdoors, any angler 12 or „ Kids got to compete too in the Little Anglers Division to catch Bass, Catfish, Perch and Crappie!

under can sign up to fish and cross the weigh in stage with their catch showing it off to the public and many proud parents. There are 3 places awarded in each category for bass, perch, crappie and catfish. Academy Outdoors provides prizes and gift certificates to the lucky winners in each age group. As this generation is the future of fishing it is wonderful that Academy Outdoors and Sealy Outdoors include them in the event each year. The Ronald McDonald House is an important benefactor of this tournament. A donation is made after each event, and this year the Sam Rayburn contestants helped with a $15,385 check to help give parents of very sick children a place to stay close by to them at little or no cost. The Ronald McDonald House believes that when a child is hospitalized, the love and support of family is as powerful as the strongest medicine prescribed.

The 2014 Sam Rayburn Big Bass Splash will be a celebration of 30 years for the event. “We have a lot of big things planned already, great surprises and big entertainment including Neal McCoy. We are guaranteeing a minimum of $1,000,000 in that tournament! The top prize will be worth at least $250,000. There will be entertainment all three days and it will all be televised. It just keeps getting bigger and better at Sealy Outdoors, and you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!” The next stop for the Big Bass Splash will be on Toledo Bend May 17-18-19 at Cypress Bend. $440,000 is guaranteed in cash and prizes. 409 Bass Club
The 409 Bass Club held their 3rd event of the 2013 fishing season on Lake Toledo Bend out of Six Mile on April 10th and 13th. Anglers that fished Wednesday faced prefrontal conditions, with cloudy skies and a strong southwest wind. Anglers that fished on Saturday faced post frontal conditions, with clear skies and light winds. Needless to say the fishing on Wednesday was significantly better. Most anglers reported catching their fish off of beds or near bedding areas. Anglers used Texas rigs, spinnerbaits, light Carolina rigs and finesse soft plastics to trick the green backs into biting. First place went to Ben Adams and Shane Landry with an impressive 22.82lb sack. Their limit was anchored by Ben’s 6.88lb sow that also took home top big bass honors. Second place went to Jeff Smith with another awesome limit weighing 19.76lbs. Hunter Aucoin and Hunter Gothia weighed in 16.47lbs to take third place and 15.92lbs was enough to give Shawn and Allyson Butler a fourth place finish. Finishing first place out of the money was Eric Van Horn and George Aucoin with 15.84lbs. As you can see Toledo Bend really produced some nice stringers of fish. Congratulations to all of the winners.

Ben Adams and Shane Landry won the tournament by more than a three pound lead from the rest of the pack

Jeff Smith brought in 19.76lbs fishing by himself to win 2nd place

The 409 Bass Club will switch gears and head to Lake Sam Rayburn on May 15th and 18th for the fourth event of the 2013 season.

The 409 Bass Club would like to thank Simon Outfitters, R1 Bass, and Bass Kandi for their continuing support.
