Learning How to Learn: Powerful mental tools to help you master tough subjects Week 3 Sumary Week 3 lectures covers memory and procastination !t again talks of the pomodoro method" wherein you set a clock for about #$ minutes and focus on a single work% !n the second lecture ! liked the analogy between &rsenic &rsenic Poisoning and Procastination 'ust as &rsenic in small doses might not seem to cause any trouble in the first few f ew weeks" because its working only in the molecular level of your body%( but slowly as time passes it poses serious health threat of cancer( cancer( organ failure etc Same like &rsenic even though Procastination might not seem to be problem for most people( but it really gets worse with time !f we consider any person)s normal day( day( we actually put off most of the work for later( and basically do any anything thing other than the work at hand( as that gives us short term pleasure *he piled up work normally becomes a nightmare for most of us

+ne more analogy that i think was really good was between when you learn to reverse the car for the first time and habit We We often don)t realise that the things that we do continuosly( continuosly( becomes a habit and we donot really need much of a attention to finish up succh task" subconciously we work% When When anyone learns to reverse a car for the first fir st time( it)sreally hard because we seem to care about every bit of detail( but as it becomes a habit( we just look back and reverse the car" fairly easy% What i infer from this is( we must really watch the habit that we are making We We always tend to take the easiest path possible( we prefer to just sit in the class dreaming( without listening to a single word We We donot realise that soon this routine turns into a habit and though might want our habit( our brain generally take thewe easy path% So to wechange really need to watch out fowill the habits thatnot weallow makeit" it always wants to

*here is a lecture on Process and Product *ake *ake for e,ample studing *he process here is how we learn *he product is e,ams( completing assignment !t is always preferable to focus on the process rather than the product -enerally speaking whenever we think of completing the assignment or nearing deadline( we become more tensed( get stressed and generally end up procastinating So it is always better you enjoy the process of what you are doing rather than focusing on( if i finsish this( i can complete the assignment

*he most daunting task can be to actually watch your habits So is it really possible to kind of overwrite your habits Well it can be .ou need to plan beforehead .ou)ll ned to find out how yo procastinate /or me generally when i start surfing up the internet( before i realise r ealise it becomes almost an hour( though i might have started with something useful( i end up searching up for random things *herfore its necessary to find out how you procastinate . .ou ou should plan( ok for f or this 30 minutes of focused mode( i would not use the internet +r( i w)ll leave my mobile in the car( before going for the classes !t is always necessary to find purpose in whatever you are doingSo its necessary to have an aim( for what you are doing and why you are doing( otherwise( there are chances you would feel beeter not doing it .ou .ou should always try to reward yourself if your plan to deal with procastination works and you end up focusing for the designated time" /eel god 1ffect% Lastely there should be a beleif that(yes( my methods work( i can study( study( ican focus 2eleif in one self is the most important thing"*ry to avoid distractions as much as possible%

+ne effective method mentioned in the lectures( that i found very useful to deal with procastination (was maintaining plan diary 2efore you start your week( a plan for*his the week Same applies for days too 1ach aday you should know what task you wanthave to complete planning should mainly be done in the night before sleep( as our diffused mode will kick in before

 

sleeping and we will have a structure in the morining on how we would want ot go about doing the work !t is better always better to start the day with the most daunting or hard task and keep up the easy ones for the end While planning a day( day( it is necessary that we plan when we would finish our work Write an end time *his will help not only to finish up all the task in the assigned time( but also to give you time for all the other activities and recreation *he later videos of the week taks of the memory We retain most of visual information " this attributes to evolution% *herfore it is always better to create a mind map( flow charts or some visual representation of whatever you are learning Like if you want to remeber a person)s name( you can associate him with something" like a place( some animal ( some flower(tree% basically anything(that is intriguing *ry to use the ma,imum senses like smell( sound etc to remember*his remember*his kind of creates a mental image and helps you in recalling !t is always better to use flashcard etc( for learning formula or something hard Write a keyword on one side of the flashcard and the formula on the other side +n daily( weekly or monthly basis( try recalling using the flashcard( if you cannot remeber the formula( you can always look back *his can be little tiring and hard to do at first( but gradually your memory will improve and just by looking at the keyword( you can remeber the formula Well some science !ts the hippocampus in our brain that helps in forming new memories and take it from working to permanent memory *he process of meomry storing is called memory consolidation &s we learn new things our memory imroves( this is called as memory reconsolidation +ut memory changes and new synapses are formed !t is necessary to space learning and repeat epeation is the key they for achange poweful term memory learing in regular interval like say 4 on daily basis( it long to weekly and then Spacing monthlythe *his will make the memory easily accessible and permanent 5on)t revise or repeat within the same seesion or repeat on the same day a hundreth time( as it doesnot really help in forming permanent memory( memory( though you might be able to remember it the ne,t day 6ind Place *echni7ue( Lastly always remeber the law of Serendipity 4 Lady law favours the one who tries Planning and wanting to is all fine 2ut whenever we try tr y to anything new or challangeing( our brain would norammly prevent us from doing those( and take easy path Start of anything is alwasy hard( and it simplies as we go one *herfore always remember the law of serendipity W Without ithout trying there is no acheiving
