Legal and Safe Abortions?
"Had this quality of care been provided by any other medical provider -- family physician, obstetrician, or emergency physician -- it would be considered grossly negligent. By an abortion provider, it does not even cause a stir. In fact, it goes un-noted and un-reported. There is no other practice of medicine where people can suffer and die from complications of your intervention without your being in some way professionally accountable, involved in their care, and at the very least, made aware of it -- except abortion. Abortion is bad medicine."
Lenora Berning, MD ER Doctor Lancaster New Era article Abortion is bad medicine; quality care is lacking 11/01/99

"Abortion is a simple procedure except for the uterus' total intolerance to poor technique... In the medical practice, there are few surgical procedures given so little attention and so underrated in its potential hazard as abortion."
Abortionist Warren Hern Abortion Practice, page 101

Warning by abortion pill manufacturer

Danco Laboratories , the manufacturer of the abortion pill RU-486 issued this warning to emergency room doctors. Below are exerpts of the letter, to read the entire letter clickhere:

November 15, 2004 Dear Emergency Room Director: Danco Laboratories is providing this information to assist you in taking care of patients who may present in an emergency room setting following treatment with Mifeprex ® (mifepristone) and misoprostol. In particular, you should be aware of the rare events – serious infection, prolonged heavy bleeding and ruptured ectopic pregnancy – discussed below. There may be some women who present to an emergency room with serious and sometimes fatal

infections and bleeding that occur rarely following spontaneous (miscarriage), surgical and medical abortions, including following Mifeprex use, and childbirth. A high index of suspicion is needed for timely diagnosis and intervention in these patients. A summary of the updated warnings follows: Infection and Sepsis In postmarketing experience following the use of Mifeprex and misoprostol, we have received a few reports of cases of serious bacterial infection, including very rare cases of fatal septic shock Vaginal Bleeding Vaginal bleeding occurs in almost all patients during the treatment procedure (see WARNINGS). According to data from the U.S. and French trials, women should expect toexperience vaginal bleeding or spotting for an average of nine to 16 days, while up to 8% of all subjects may experience some type of bleeding for 30 days or more. Prolonged heavy bleeding (soaking through two thick full-size sanitary pads per hour for two consecutive hours) may be a sign of incomplete abortion or other complications and prompt medical or surgical intervention may be needed to prevent the development of hypovolemic shock. Patients should be counseled to seek immediate medical attention if they experience prolonged heavy vaginal bleeding following a medical abortion. Excessive vaginal bleeding usually requires treatment by uterotonics, vasoconstrictor drugs, curettage, administration of saline infusions, and/or blood transfusions. Ectopic Pregnancy Additionally, in postmarketing experience we have received a small number of reports of ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Physicians should remain alert to the possibility that a patient who is undergoing a medical abortion could have an undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy since some of the expected symptoms of a medical abortion may be similar to those of a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. The presence of an ectopic pregnancy may have been missed even if the patient underwent ultrasonography prior to being prescribed Mifeprex. We rely on medical feedback from health care professionals and therefore remind you to report serious adverse events and any on-going pregnancies following treatment with the Mifeprex regimen to us. Please provide a brief clinical synopsis (by postal mail, email or phone): Medical Director Danco Laboratories, LLC P.O. PLANNED PARENTHOOD of AUSTRALIA Confirmation of Informed Consent
Please print and read this information carefully. If you do not completely understand any of this information do not sign the section until you have had the opportunity to discuss the information with our staff and the doctor who will be performing your procedure prior to your admission Please bring this form with you . The procedure of a First Trimester Termination The surgical termination of pregnancy takes approximately 6-10 minutes. Once the client is anaesthetised the doctor gently insets a speculum (the instrument used during a Pap Smear). Once the speculum is in place the doctor will administer local anaesthetic to the cervix. The cervix will then be gently dilated (opened) to allow for a plastic tube to enter the uterus and suction the contents. The procedure is carried out under a choice of anaesthetics: local, twilight or general anaesthesia. Complications from First - Trimester Termination of Pregnancy Complications include:

· Post abortion syndrome -blood clots accumulating in the uterus, bleeding or pain requiring
another suctioning. · Excessive bleeding that may require a blood transfusion · Residual products of conception may be left in the uterus, requiring a repeat procedure · Infections, most of which are easily identified and treated if the woman carefully observes the discharge instructions given and explained to them prior to leaving the facility · A tear in the cervix that may require stitches. · Perforation of the wall of the uterus and/or organs that may heal themselves or may require surgical repair or rarely hysterectomy. · Failure of termination of pregnancy that does not end the pregnancy which requires that the procedure is repeated · Excessive bleeding due to failure of the uterus to contract that may require a blood transfusion · Incompetent cervix/stenosed cervix (too tight or too loose cervix which may impair future fertility) · Asherman's syndrome (cessation of periods and adhesions in uterus that may impair future fertility) · Depression or mood disturbance, suicide · False passage/channel in the cervix, not allowing entry into the uterus.

· RISKS ASSCOIATED WITH ANAESTHESIA
ANAPHYLAXIS - acute allergic reaction to the drugs used. Incidence: approximately 1 in 1,000,000. None of the drugs used in this clinic are implicated. The emergency drugs and equipment required to treat this are readily at hand. ASPIRATION OF STOMACH CONTENTS - this is where a patient vomits under anaesthetic. There were 11 non-fatal and 3 fatal cases reported in 4 years (1.76 million cases). For this reason we require all patients to be fasted.

AWARENESS - this means being able to remember things whilst anaesthetised. This is more common with the light sedation techniques used in Day Surgery. CARDIAC DYSRYTHMIAS - irregularity in heart beat. 3 cases reported in 1.76 million in healthy people. A slowing of the heartbeat may be encountered during dilation of the cervix or neck of the womb. A drug called Atropine is routinely given to counteract this; at makes the heart race. EPILEPTIC TYPE FITS - these may occur in people who are either epileptic or have the potential to become epileptic in the future. Some of the anaesthetic drugs or the local anaesthetic may cause such fits. They are not used in people identified as epileptics. HYPOXIA - lack of oxygen to the brain. This is usually as a result of decreased breathing due to excessive sedation or airway obstruction. Airway obstruction may occur in those who routinely snore and those who are obese. Continuous monitoring of blood oxygen is routinely used in this Clinic and supplemental oxygen is always available. LARYNGEAL SPASM - this is forceful closure of the vocal cords causing little flow of air into the lungs. It is usually as a result of a painful stimulus in a patient who is between light and deep sleep. Laryngeal spasm is readily treated. All the facilities are available at this clinic. THROMBOPHLEBITIS/BRUISING - some people may experience pain, redness and swelling in the vein into which the drugs are injected - thrombophlebitis. In most cases this is short lived. Bruising at the site of injection is due usually to a difficult cannulation or passage of the needle into the vein. MALIGNANT HYPERPYREXIA - Incidence: 4 cases in 1.76 million anaesthetics 2 deaths. When exposed to certain triggering agents these people may develop the condition of Malignant Hyperpyrexia. In this condition, all the muscles of the body contract causing the body to overheat; untreated mortality is 86% however specific treatment is available. Drugs to reverse this condition are available at all of our day surgeries.

New Women all Women Health Care
On November 20, 2006, the Tuscaloosa News (Clinic closed after first inspection in 6 years), reported that the New Woman All Women Health Care, in Birmingham, Alabama was expected to also be placed on probation for several health deficiencies. The last time the abortion clinic had even been inspected prior to the 2006 inspection was two years earlier. During that 2004 inspection, by the Alabama Department of Public Health, inspectors noted that the New Woman abortion clinic had failed to update their policy and procedure manual since 1996. They also found that several patients received counseling from non-licensed staff prior to their abortions, and that the clinic did not have a required infection control committee and did not investigate potential infections. On November 18, 2006, Birmingham's NBC 13, (Health Dept. Wants Probation For Birmingham Abortion Clinic) reported that health officials found violations including an administrator ordering and diverting narcotics for her own personal use. In the Alabama Department of Public Health inspection report dated, 11/30/2006, the state

found that the administrator of the abortion clinic was a licensed practical nurse whose license had been revoked for drug abuse. Other violations listed in the report, included patients not being given preoperative medication on time. In at least 10 incidents outlined in the report, a review of the procedure sheets revealed that no pregnancy tests were performed. In at least 9 patients, inspectors noted that a review of the medical records showed that no ultra sounds had been performed prior to procedures. Interviews with the clinic administrator revealed to inspectors that phone calls by patients with complications after their procedures were taken by a person who was not a licensed nurse. Also noted on the report is the fact that the clinic failed to submit the required forms of termination to the state. The state found that the abortion clinic failed to examine the fetus to determine the proper gestational age and viability, prior to abortions. They also found that there was no policy for the bleach mixture used to sanitize the abortion utensils and procedure rooms. NBC 13 also reported that Alabama Department of Public Health attorney, Pat Ivie said lawyers for New Woman All Women Health Care abortion clinic planned to sign forms consenting to the findings and would voluntarily go on probation. When the state legislature sought to change abortion clinic regulations requiring that "all physicians associated with the facility must be board eligible or board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, " Diane Derzis, owner of New Woman Healthcare in Birmingham, said three out of five of her physicians wouldn't meet the proposed standard. The paper also reported that during testimony of the changes, Matthew Phillips, a local gynecologist, said he's witnessed instances where women have come into local emergency rooms with post-abortion complications and the clinic would not provide the name of a clinic doctor, instead relying on a nurse practitioner to pass along the message. "I assume the physician is going to ride in on a pony with a mask on like the Lone Ranger," he said.

Several abortion clinics closed in Florida, unsafe
It was August of 2006, and two signs were posted on the doors of a Ft. Lauderdale abortion clinic by state authorities saying, "Clinic closed until further notice"after Florida state regulators banned abortions at the facility. They also closed four other abortion clinics in the state that abortionist James Pendergraft owned.

This abortionist/clinic owner had his license suspended for allegedly performing two illegal abortions at an Orlando clinic. Five years prior to this investigation Pendergraft went to prison on charges of trying to extort payments from Marion County officials in negotiations over a new abortion clinic.

The emergency license-suspension order filed by the Florida Health Department (DOH) said that Pendergraft prescribed drugs without appropriate authorization in two third-trimester abortions he performed in 2004 and 2005. DOH secretary M. Rony Francios, MD stated in Pendergraft's emergency suspension order: "The Florida Legislature has recognized the inherent dangers relating to third trimester abortions. Dr. Pendergraft demonstrated a flagrant disregard for the laws of the State of Florida and a willingness to endanger the lives and health of pregnant patients by performing third trimester abortions outside of a hospital and without obtaining a concurring physician's opinions." In the 2004 case, Pendergraft reportedly prescribed a 22-year-old abortion patient the drug Cytotec, used to initiate labor for abortions. She later gave birth to the aborted fetus on her living room floor and went to the emergency room at a local hospital suffering abdominal pain and bleeding. Food and Drug Administration documents state that Cytotec can cause the uterus to rupture if given to pregnant women past 8 weeks. It also states that patients must be advised of the dangers of the drug prior to administering it. Here are excerpts from a FDA ALERT Entitled , "Risks of Use in Labor and Delivery" "This Patient Information Sheet is for pregnant women who may receive misoprostol (another name for Cytotec) to soften their cervix or induce contractions to begin labor. Misoprostol is sometimes used to decrease blood loss after delivery of a baby. These uses are not approved by the FDA. No company has sent the FDA scientific proof that misoprostol is safe and effective for these uses. There can be serious side effects, including a torn uterus (womb), when misoprostol is used for labor and delivery. A torn uterus may result in severe bleeding, having the uterus removed (hysterectomy), and death of the mother or baby. These side effects are more likely in women who have had previous uterine surgery, a previous Cesarean delivery (C-section), or several previous births. Cytotec was originally developed as an ulcer drug but costs pennies on the dollar and is being used by abortionists because it is so cheap." Ina May Gaskin, a certified professional midwife wrote this about the drug in a 2000 Salon Magazine article, "What we do know about Cytotec is that it is dirt cheap: A single 25-mcg dose costs roughly 13 cents; Pitocin, in contrast, necessitates hundreds of dollars in high-tech intervention. Since Cytotec is made in 100-mcg tablets to be taken orally, its quarter-tab dosages are necessarily inaccurate: Nurses or doctors have to literally cut up the pills with little knives. Furthermore, there is still no agreement as to the dosage size or interval or even most appropriate route of administration. Unlike a Pitocin drip, which has a half-life in the body of about 10 minutes and can easily be turned off if the woman responds to it violently, once Cytotec is administered, you can't get it out and nobody knows its half-life. This gives Cytotec an unpredictable, stealthy quality. Sometimes even when it is doing serious damage to the uterus, the woman has no awareness that something's wrong; other times it creates immediate violent contractions. Moreover, the ruptures can occur many hours after a single dose in which the drug seemed to have caused no adverse effects. No one understands how this works, but it has been the subject of discussion both in the medical literature and in physician chat rooms."

Brandi Brown, a spokeswoman at the Agency for Health Care Administration which regulates Florida abortion clinics stated, ''We feel Dr. Pendergraft has demonstrated an unwillingness to comply with Florida law, and have therefore taken immediate action to safeguard the health, safety and well-being of his patients and to preclude any further harm being done to future patients.''

When the Summit comes crashing down
Numerous press reports throughout May of 2006 shined a light on what is really happening behind the doors at the Summit Medical Center in Birmingham Alabama. All this brought about by an “emergency order” issued by the State Health Officials to close the Summit Medical Center after the clinic was found dispensing RU-486 without a doctor. News reports indicated that a staff member of the abortion clinic gave a patient RU-486, which, is supposed to be administered only by doctors. The patient, who at the time was told that she was only six weeks pregnant, found herself six days later being rushed to the emergency room of the Birmingham hospital with the head of a baby protruding from her. While at the hospital the woman delivered a stillborn, macerated, six-pound four-ounce baby. The baby was well beyond the six-week estimate the clinic issued."It was nearly full term," said State health officer, Dr. Donald Williamson. Once state health officials were notified, they found that Summit's records falsely indicated that the clinic’s abortionist performed the ultrasound and provided the abortion. Investigations revealed that the physician listed on the clinic’s files was not even present at the clinic the day the abortion drug was administered. Another patient told the Birmingham News that, "she felt sick, when she heard the story" because she was still was running a fever and having complications from a surgical abortion at Summit that same month and had just made a follow-up appointment. "I was scared for my life," she said. "I was at a loss for words. It was crazy. I don't think they should be allowed to reopen. That's dealing with someone's life. If they can't do it right, they don't need to even be open." However, that is just the beginning of the end for the Summit Clinic. The Decatur Daily News reported in a June 22, 2006 article, Abortion foes celebrate closing of Birmingham clinic, that rather than fight upcoming state charges the clinic surrendered its license. The charges stemmed from accusations that a clinic worker was allowed to perform an abortion without a doctor present.. The director of the Alabama Department of Public Health, Dr. Donald Williamson called off any formal hearings into the clinic after they closed, stating, “They surrendered their license and are out of business. There's nothing to hear at this point."

Summit Abortion Clinic

Not willing to let the nonsense that went on at the Summit Clinic go unpunished, On December 8, 2006, Alabama’s AG Troy King announced the arrest of Janet Onthank King, the former administrator of Summit abortion clinic. According to the Attorney General, Janet King was charged with illegally performing abortions at the clinic. A press release issued by the attorney general, said abortionist King is charged in two separate indictments with two instances of knowingly or recklessly performing abortions as a non-physician, in violation of Code of Alabama Section 26-23A-3(7). A third indictment charges Ms. King with falsifying business records of Summit Medical Center in violation of Section 13A9-45, by making false entries into equipment sterilization reports that are required to be kept under Alabama Administrative Code Chapter 420-5-1-.03(7). The indictments of Ms. King are the result of a joint investigation by Attorney General King's Office, the Alabama Department of Public Health, and the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners.

Kentucky doctor botches abortions for a living
May of 2006, The Louisville Courier Journal, reported that abortionist Ronachai Banchongmanie was accused of using "vacuum extractions" to delivery a baby by a Louisville couple whose baby girl died a day after her birth. The May 19, 2006 article titled, Louisville couple's lawsuit blames obstetrician in baby's 2005 death, reported that the couple filed a wrongful-death lawsuit claiming negligence. The Louisville Courier Journal also reported that it was the second such lawsuit filed against Dr. Ronachai Banchongmanie in as many years -- and one of more than a dozen civil suits against the doctor going back to his days operating an abortion practice in Louisville in the 1990s. According to the Louisville Courier Journal, In 1998, Banchongmanie was ordered to pay a Kentucky woman $21,000 after a Jefferson Circuit Court jury ruled that he botched a 1991 abortion. In 1997, an Evansville, Ind. woman sued Banchongmanie claiming he failed to complete her abortion, leaving her with an unwanted child. That suit was later dismissed. In 1995, a Louisville woman claimed in a lawsuit that parts of a fetus remained in her body for a month after Banchongmanie performed an incomplete abortion the year before.

Like he's suppose to remember all the protocols
In November of 2005, abortionist Gideon M. Kioko had his medical license suspended by the Maryland Board of Physicians (case # 2005-0499). However, as The Washington Post reported, this was not the first time Kioko was disciplined by the state board. Their April 11,2005 article entitled, Despite Deaths, D.C. License Upheld, showed that in two previous occasions the board disciplined Kioko and failed to revoke his license. According to the Post, Kioko was presented to the board following the death of one abortion patient and the permanent brain damage suffered by another of Kioko’s abortion patients. One of the complaints states that on January 13, 2005, the board received a complaint from the risk manager at Washington Adventist Hospital. He stated that on December 1, 2004, a 26year-old patient was admitted to the emergency room of the hospital by ambulance after an incomplete abortion performed by Kioko. When paramedics arrived at the clinic, they stated they heard a woman screaming from the back of the office. They reported that the woman was bleeding heavily and the baby was still inside her. The statement paramedics is that when they entered the room they observed the patient, “female, naked from the waist down, rolling back and forth on the table screaming. Patient was covered in blood, legs bathed in blood, heavy constant stream of blood spurting from vagina, table covered in blood, numerous equipment tools on tables covered in blood. Suction unit on table also covered in blood and had blood in it...IV bag also covered in blood. Patient responded to her name but could not answer questions. Moaning and screaming. Patient stopped moving. Female attendant on scene tried to arouse patient, no response...” The patient was transferred to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery. The hospital ER filed this statement with the board concerning her conditions and what they did, "The patient hemorrhaged and developed disseminating intravascular coagulopathy (DIC). On admission she underwent the following procedures, exploratory laparotomy, repair of uterine perforation, bilateral uterine artery ligation, right utero-ovarian artery ligation, repair of cervical laceration, and repair of vaginal vault laceration. The final pathology diagnosis of the uterine contents included the fetal head and upper verterbral column." That same month, January of 2005, another patient went to Kioko while he performed abortions at the Potomac Family Planning center. Kioko did not do a complete physical history, nor a sonogram. He noted the woman was approximately 18 weeks pregnant. Kioko botched that abortion as well, and transferred the woman to Prince George's Hospital by car rather than calling 911. The hospital noted that there was a uterine perforation and possible bowel injury. Kioko’s problems extended further than just the proceedures. During an inspection at one of Kioko's facilities, investigators noted that they only found three employees at the clinic: Kioko’s wife, Kioko’s niece, and a medical assistant. Kioko ‘s wife

claimed to be a nurse, but investigators could not find any proof of her registration in the state. Kioko stated that he fired the medical assistant claiming that she was stealing funds from him. The case noted that even though Kioko’s wife was not licensed by the state as a nurse, she frequently assisted Kioko in the performance of abortions. During the investigation, the board discovered several health violations at the clinic where Kioko performed his abortions. The case states that the carpet was stained and unclean. Office staff reported to the board that Kioko did not use new sterile aspirations for each patient, that Kioko used the same tube on each patient throughout the day and only washed it when it became opaque in color. Proper emergency equipment was also lacking at the clinic. In August, the medical board received a new complaint about Kioko from Northeast Washington resident Thakerya Drayton, 21, who was referred to Kioko's clinic when she sought an abortion in 2001. "I didn't know anything about him," she said in an interview. After the procedure, she said, Kioko sent her to the recovery room for about an hour. "I knew something wasn't right because of the pain," she recalled. When she got home, she was "bleeding out of control," she said. After a few days, she told her mother, who called an ambulance that took her to Howard University Hospital. Hospital records state that Drayton suffered an "incomplete abortion." Kioko said an incomplete abortion is considered a surgical complication and shouldn't warrant a complaint to the medical board.

Let's see you miss the small intestine
In August of 2005, a judgment of $60,625.00 in damages was issued against abortion doctor Bruce Tisch, according to the Superior Court of New Jersey-Bergen County (Docket # BER-L2666-03). The case involved an abortion Tisch performed on his patient in New Jersey. The case states that while Tisch performed the abortion he perforated the woman’s uterus and negligently grasped the small intestine with his instrument and brought it into the cervical opening. It also states that Tisch damaged the bowel of the women.

Improper Care - Oop's
In a detailed report on the suspension released April 12, 2006 by the Richmond Times Dispatch (Annandale doctor's license is suspended; Improper care to obstetric), it was revealed that Abofreka estimated the woman was carrying a 12-week-old fetus, but did not perform a sonogram to confirm his estimation.

Board records state he did a sonogram that showed the fetus to be 24 weeks old, and afterward instructed the patient to go to Alexandria Hospital without arranging for her transfer. Abortions performed after the first trimester in Virginia, must be done in a hospital. But this is not the first time Abofreka's lack of protocol has led to problems. According to the Board, Abofreka did not perform any diagnostic tests to confirm the age of a fetus carried by woman before starting an abortion in February 2005. In the middle of the procedure, Abofreka stopped to do a sonogram, which revealed a cystic mass he suspected was an ectopic pregnancy. The medical board maintains that Abofreka did not arrange for the patient to get to a hospital but gave her and her boyfriend a copy of the sonogram and instructed them to go to an emergency room. The patient went to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where the mass and an ongoing early-stage pregnancy were confirmed.

Clinic described as vile, disgusting
"Trash was everywhere and roaches crawling across the countertops, with a smell of stench in the room. My partner observed the procedure room was filthy, he told me he saw dried blood on the floor and the room looked nasty to him.” “In a statement to me, one witness related how Rajanna was a filthy man who did not properly sterilize his equipment. I thought I had seen every vile, disgusting crime scene but was in for a shock when I started this investigation."

That is the testimony of a police officer that was called to investigate a theft at the clinic of abortionist Krishna Rajanna, as he described what he saw when he entered. Kansas State Board of Healing Arts officials added to that testimony other evidence including human tissue that was in styrofoam cups in the freezer and refrigerator where the workers lunches were kept and a dead rodent in the hallway. In June of 2005, the Board revoked the medical license of Rajanna.

That's why they call it a practice
Abortionist Malachy Dehenre, was suspended from practicing indefinitely in December of 2004 in Alabama. Alabama officials cited gross malpractice after investigating four abortions performed by Dehenre from 2000 to 2003. Two abortions occurred in Jackson at the New Woman Medical Center, and two in Birmingham, Ala. The Alabama State Board of Medical Examiners concluded Dehenre, practiced medicine in a way as to "endanger the health of patients" and committed "repeated malpractice." In the Alabama case, Leigh Ann Stephens Alford, 34, of Blount County, Ala was discharged 20 minutes after having an abortion on Nov. 25, 2003, from the Summit Medical Center abortion clinic. She had sustained an unrecognized uterine perforation during the abortion, the Alabama board said. Less than six hours later, her husband contacted the medical center and said she had abdominal pain and a low temperature. She died about 18 hours after her discharge. "Subsequent hemorrhagic shock led to her ultimate demise,"according to the board's report. Each of the women in the other three cases required hysterectomies to stop massive hemorrhaging, according to records. The Alabama board said Dehenre's conduct in four cases between 2000 and 2003 was "immoral, unprofessional or dishonorable," and he endangered his patients through "gross malpractice." In light of his less than stellar record Mississippi suspended his license as well. Dehenre response,

"I don't know what is immoral in doing what is legal in the country."

Abortion nearly kills teen
The State of California’s Division of Medical Quality, department of consumer affairs, case # D2-1997-75630 is another example of the quality of care available in abortion clinics. This case centers around abortionist Philip B. Pierre-Louis, who surrendered his medical license as a result of an abortion he performed that nearly killed a 17-year-old girl. The girl, who obtained her abortion at the Los Angeles Metropolitan Medical Center, was approximately 14-15 weeks pregnant. Abortionist Pierre-Louis began the procedure using the dilation and curettage method, during which he perforated the girl’s uterus and intestine. As a result of his actions the teenager remained in the hospital for 12 days - nine of them in intensive care. As a result of this event the board cited him for gross negligence, incompetence, unprofessional conduct and failure to maintain adequate medical records when he perforated a patient's uterus and removed three to five feet of her intestine when performing an abortion. The California Press Enterprise reported on January 6, 2005, that Pierre-Louis employed an unlicensed physician assistant to work at the doctor's Los Angeles medical clinic until April 2. Pierre-Louis also wrote two prescriptions in early 2004 using a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration certificate that had expired in 2001. On April 30,2003, the California Medical Board published this statement saying that PierreLouis will never again be allowed to practice in California: The Medical Board of California has revoked the medical license of Philip B. Pierre-Louis, M.D. of San Bernardino. The decision becomes effective May 27, 2003. "Pierre-Louis was put on four years of probation and fined $5,000 in cost recovery by the Board on March 31, 1999 for gross negligence, incompetence, unprofessional conduct and failure to maintain adequate medical records when he perforated a patient's uterus and removed three to five feet of her intestine when performing an abortion. Another physician performed corrective surgery and completed the procedure. The patient was placed in intensive care for nine days and had to remain in the hospital for 12 days, postoperatively." In his Stipulated Settlement and Disciplinary Order stemming from that case, Pierre-Louis acknowledged that had the matter gone to a hearing, the Board would have been able to establish a factual basis for its charges, and he agreed to several probationary terms. In its Petition to Revoke Probation, filed November 20, 2002, the Board charged Pierre-Louis with numerous violations of his probation, including failure to take and pass a remedial clinical program; failure to submit timely reports to the Board; failure to reimburse the Board for its investigative and probation monitoring costs; and failure to appear for interviews with Board staff, all of which he had agreed to do in his settlement.

Woman testifies to abortion horror
On March 1, 2004, the Washington Times reported (Planned Parenthood told to pay $672,610 for botched abortion) that a jury ordered Planned Parenthood Golden Gate to pay $672,610.00 in damages to a woman whose abortion of twins was botched. The patient's testimony was reportedly so horrifying that three jurors wanted to give her one million dollars in settlement. According to the women’s attorney, she visited the Planned Parenthood clinic pregnant with twins. When she returned for a check-up she was told that she was fine and there were no complications, even though she felt something was wrong. The Dolan Law Firm Website states that about 6 weeks later the woman returned to the clinic complaining of morning sickness and a swollen stomach, she requested a urine test and to the clinic nurses’ surprise, she was till pregnant. She was referred to another clinic that performed late term abortions. There she became aware that she still had the remaining twin, who was alive, but missing an arm and a leg. The women subsequently had a second abortion. Her attorney claims that the woman still struggles emotionally and that she cries uncontrollably when she sees children. He told the jurors that she feels unable to function in a romantic relationship. Her attorney, Christopher Nolan told the Times, "she testified on the stand that she hallucinated and saw blood all over her lower legs and pelvic area."

Woman, 'I feel like I've been butchered
The article, ‘I Felt baby kick 10 wks after my abortion’ Mum sues after botch ops, in The People dated 1-28-2004, reports that a lawsuit was filed against Phanuel Dartey. Dartey, a UK abortionist, who botched an abortion performed on patient. Sharleen Allen, 18, then went for a second termination - and was allegedly "butchered" by a top Harley Street doctor. She told reporters that, "The clinic told me there was a one in 10,000 chance that the termination could be unsuccessful. I was that one. They said it was just one of those things." About three months after the abortion she felt something moving inside and knew she was still pregnant. Now 19 weeks' pregnant, she returned to the clinic and had a second procedure by the abortionist, Phanuel Dartey. "When I came round from the anaesthetic a nurse told me not to move. I told her I needed the toilet and struggled off the bed to stand up. But blood gushed down my

legs. I knew something was terribly wrong. Dr Dartey had blood spattered on his overalls. That made me scared. He told me something went wrong and I had to go to Ealing Hospital. I thought I was dying." She said doctors told her she had a punctured womb, cervix and bowel and there was a pint and a half of blood in her stomach. She was in hospital for seven days. "He messed up the next two years of my life. I feel like I've been butchered. I'm still living with the scars and the effects on my health." In 2001, Dartey was the doctor for a patient who died after her abortion. The BBC News reported that Sharon Bagg, 28, died of brain damage on 21 March, two weeks after an abortion at Dean Park Clinic, run by the British Pregnancy Advisory Service in Bournemouth. She was 14 weeks pregnant. The inquest heard how doctors decided to go ahead with the abortion despite risks caused by Ms Bagg's weight, because she had undergone operations before with no problems. It was her second termination in six months. The anesthetist, Dr Sowny John, testified that towards the end he noticed Ms Bagg's blood was turning dark through lack of oxygen. He said he looked up and saw her face was turning blue. An ambulance wasn't called until 10 minutes later. Ms Bagg's mother, Hazel Cann, said: "Those 10 minutes could have made a big difference." Despite accusations that the anesthetist did not handle the crisis quickly enough and that she was not as qualified as she should have been, the coroner ruled that it was an accidental death, probably related to the woman's obesity.

Woman can sue, baby survives abortion
In June of 2006, an Alabama Sate Appeals court ruled that a Birmingham abortion clinic could be sued for an unsuccessful abortion that a woman blames for damaging her child’s health. In the June 4, 2006 Associated Press article, Appeals court allows child to sue over botched abortion, they report that a woman identified only by her initials went to Planned Parenthood of Alabama to abort her child. The abortion attempt was not successful and she delivered a little girl who was born with injuries that included a hole in her heart and an inverted tube leading from her lungs to her heart, causing her body not to be able to receive enough oxygen. The appeals court ruled that the mother could not sue on her own behalf, but the five judges said she could sue on behalf of her child. "Neither the United States Supreme Court nor the Supreme Court of Alabama has ever ruled that a medical provider, or for that matter a mother, can engage, with some blanket of constitutional protection, in negligent or reckless conduct that deforms or injures a child so long as the deformity or injury is inflicted on the child before it leaves the womb," Judge Glenn Murdock wrote. "To embrace that position would allow abortion clinics to operate "as carelessly

or recklessly as they wish without bearing any responsibility ... It would be hard to imagine a more troubling development in our law."

Abortion patient,
The November 28, 2004 article, “I felt the baby kick 10 weeks after my abortion,”in The UK publication, The People, focused on a lawsuit was filed against Phanuel Dartey. Dartey, a UK abortionist, botched an abortion performed on patient. Sharleen Allen, 18, who then went for a second termination - and was allegedly "butchered" by a top Harley Street doctor. "When I came round from the anestheticanaesthetic a nurse told me not to move. I told her I needed the toilet and struggled off the bed to stand up. But blood gushed down my legs. I knew something was terribly wrong.Dr Dartey had blood spattered on his overalls. That made me scared. He told me something went wrong and I had to go to Ealing Hospital. I thought I was dying."

Woman dies, abortion linked to Planned Parenthood
In 2003, The Los Angeles Times detailed a story about a 25-year-old woman who died after her abortion. The June 25,2003 article is entitled, Clinic, Doctor Faulted in Abortion Death; A Planned Parenthood facility failed to follow established medical procedures, state says. The woman's family has filed a lawsuit, said that abortion patient Diana Lopez went to a Planned Parenthood clinic in East Los Angeles where a report by the state Department of Health Services said they neglected to follow established medical procedures during the abortion. The report also found that the clinic failed to report Lopez's death within 24 hours, as required, and that a doctor working there did not follow clinic policies that would have excluded the woman as a candidate for the procedure. The lawsuit against Planned Parenthood and the abortionist Mark Maltzer alleges that Maltzer "worked so quickly, recklessly and negligently pulling out sharp body parts of Diana Lopez' 19-20 week-old unborn infant that severe, irreparable damage was done." The suit also alleges that Maltzer failed to accompany Lopez to the hospital, nor did he speak

with doctors there or with the Lopez family after she died.

Abortion doc allowed to practice despite trail of
In 2002, The Dallas Morning News reported that Texas abortionist Jasbir Ahluwalia had a trail of lawsuits against him. They stated that as early as March of 1991, a woman accused the abortionist of perforating her uterus during an abortion as a result, surgeons had to remove her uterus. That same year, another Dallas woman sued Ahluwalia claiming he also perforated her uterus during an abortion. The News reported that Ahluwalia settled both suits in 1993. They reported a number of additional cases such as a suit by a patient Ahluwalia had performed a hysterectomy on. She alleged that he mistakenly blocked a ureter with stitches. So severe were the complications that, four months later, another surgeon had to remove one of her kidneys. They also reported that he lost his hospital privileges at a local hospital because he "failed to adequately manage various high-risk pregnancies." They went on to detail a case where the mother and father of an infant alleged that he caused severe and permanent brain damage to their child during delivery. The Arlington Morning News earlier (3-20-1999, Abortion notification issue raising discussion) wrote an article regarding parental notification legislation interviewed abortionist Jasbir Ahluwalia. He worked at A Choice for Women, an abortion clinic in Dallas at the time and stated, "I don't want the little girl to feel uncomfortable because her family is not with her. I don't want to push these girls in a way that will make them seek illegal abortions." Many have asked the question, why did the medical board move so slowly in reviewing Ahluwalia's license.

Clinic closes after investigation
According to numerous reports in June of 2000, the Kansas Board of Healing Arts investigated allegations that abortionist Kristin Neuhaus, performed an abortion on a patient who withdrew her consent. Neuhaus contested that the patient did not remove her consent to the abortion but merely rejected the use of a particular anesthetic. Neuhaus admitted to using the anesthetic on the patient anyway. The 15-member Kansas Board of Healing Arts voted unanimously to accept a settlement with Dr. Kristin Neuhaus that requires she keep a more detailed consent form and comply with the law. It would require Neuhaus to comply with laws on sedating and monitoring patients,

keeping proper medical records and informing patients about the probable gestational age of their fetuses. The agreement said there was no evidence she acted with malice or lack of concern for her patients In 2002 Neuhaus closed her abortion clinic, stating that she has not recovered financially the investigation by state regulators. The clinic was about $100,000 in debt, mostly because of several weeks of inactivity in 2001.

Bad all the way around
A January 19, 2003 Virginian-Pilot news article about bad doctors, entitled, More than 250 doctors are licensed by the Virginia medical board despite records of serious mistakes or misconduct, a review of board actions since 1990 shows, reported a serious mistake by abortionist Anthony A. Dunkwu of Alexandria, Va. According to the paper, Dunkwu began the abortion after reportedly performing only a pelvic exam, not a sonogram as well, he estimated that his patient was about 10 weeks pregnant. Medical experts say sonograms are not required in the first trimester, although Hampton Roads abortion providers say they perform them routinely. Dunkwu began the procedure in his office using a local anesthetic. It didn’t take long to realize something had gone wrong. The board order states that Dunkwu believed he might have perforated the woman's uterus so he rushed the woman to Inova Alexandria Hospital, so that he could complete the abortion under general anesthesia. After examining the patient again he incorrectly estimated her pregnancy at 12 to 13 weeks. According to the medical board order, "Dunkwu could feel a separate mass, which he identified as a fibroid." The report states that he began to cut the woman’s abdomen open and discovered that the "mass" he had mistaken for a tumor was actually the uterus. He cut open the woman's uterus and removed a lifeless male fetus weighing about 2.7 pounds. Dunkwu then incorrectly estimated the aborted fetus to be 20 to 22 weeks old. In fact, the fetus was 30 weeks old. Babies delivered prematurely at that age and size usually survive. In 2001, when facing the Board of Medicine, Dunkwu admitted to making "an unintentional mistake." Sadly, he received only a slap on the wrist for his negligence and continued to perform abortions.

An epidemic of bad medicine at clinic chain
Bertha Bugarin, manager of a chain of Southern California abortion clinics which target the Latin community, was charged with practicing medicine without a license.

Bugarin's chain, which operated under the names Clinica Medica Para La Mujer de Hoy or Community Women's Medical Clinic, has been gained quite a reputation with the medical board and court house. At least 12 personal injury and malpractice suits along with a wrongful death suit have been filed against Bugarin, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times (02/08/2008). At least six of the cases have resulted in settlements or judgments against the defendants. This is but the latest round of trouble for the clinics and the abortionists on staff: · · Bugarin's sister, Raquel Bugarin, is accused of helping during the procedures. Dr. Phillip Rand, who at the time of this event was in his 80's, performed a suction procedure on a lady who was 20 weeks pregnant without pinkillers or anesthesia. This procedure nearly cost the women her life as the suction method should not be used after 14 weeks. The medical board went so far as to call the actions "barbaric" and a "severe departure" from reasonable standards of care. Abortionist Mohamed Dia surrendered his license after admitting he used a van to bring a bleeding patient to the hospital after perforating her uterus and leaving part of the baby inside a women. Abortionist Laurence Reich had numerous complaints, and was disciplined, for sexual exploitation of patients. Abortionist Glenn Edward Miller had his medical license revoked for substance abuse. In addition, Miller and Rand settled a lawsuit relating to an abortion performed on a non-pregnant woman. Abortionist George Dalton Flanigan was put on probation for refusing to perform a cesarean section on a women whose baby had died prior to birth. He instead delivered the baby using a vacuum procedure.

Abortion may cause mental illness
A 2008 study released by the Royal College of Psychiatrists has shown that there is a risk of developing mental heath problems following an abortion. This reversal of its previous position has come about with the arrival of new evidence. In its recent position paper the group acknowledges that: "The current research evidence base is inconclusive - some studies indicate no evidence of harm, whilst other studies identify a range of mental disorders following abortion." The college suggests information materials for women considering having abortions may need to include this new advice.

State shutters clinic over health risks

New Jersey's newspaper, The Record, printed a story on the February 28, 2007,about the State of New Jersey shutting down one of the largest abortion mills in the state. The clinic, Metropolitan Medical Associates, performed over 10,000 abortions a year. Problems cited include infection control, instruments, sterilization equipment, and processing equipment. The final list of violations has yet to be disclosed by the state pending response from the clinic. This is not the first time this clinic has been shut down because of these problems, as it was closed in 1993 because of similar issues. The investigation into the clinic was triggered by a complaint filed by the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center which treated a women with complications from her abortion.
