Vyvanse Contraindicated in Cardiovascular Disease
Vyvanse which goes by the Generic name of Lisdexamfetamine is a central nervous system stimulant drug. Vyvanse is prescribed in the treatment of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in children six to twelve years in age and in adults. Vyvanse doest not constitute the whole treatment plan, rather, it is used in conjunction with a number of drugs. The United States Food and Drug Administration (F.D.A) has approved the use of Vyvanse in treatment of people with ADHD. ADHD patients suffer from poor attention span, organization and interaction. These symptoms often make it difficult for the person to adopt in a social setting at home or work. Vyvanse is from a class of drugs called Ampehteamines which act as central nervous stimulants. These amphetamines increase the span and duration of alertness and help relieve the symptoms of ADHD. Vyvanse has been proven to be effective in the short term treatment(3 to 4 weeks) of ADHD. However, studies have not been conducted that prove the effectiveness of Vyvanse for long-term usage. However, far from being the wonder drug for the treatment of ADHD, Vyvanse comes with a number of contraindications. Vyvanse is contraindicated in patients who have Advanced arteriosclerosis, symptomatic cardiovascular disease or moderate to severe hypertension. Studies have been conducted that have proved that sudden Death might occur with Pre-existing Structural Cardiac Abnormalities or Other Serious Heart Problems if the patients are put on a Vyvanse regime. Vyvanse has been linked to the sudden death in children and adolescents with structural cardiac abnormalities meaning any previous defect might be exacerbated with the use of Vyvanse and could result in sudden death. The use of stimulants cause a general increase in the heart rate and cardiac activity. This puts a burden on the already weakened heart which in turn would lead to sudden cardiac symptoms and might even lead to death. Thus, before prescribing Vyvanse to children , a complete cardiovascular checkout should be conducted to rule out any serious cardiac abnormalities or problems. Any condition in which the heart has already been weakned would put them at risk. In case of adults with ADHD, who are on Vyvanse regime, instances of sudden death , stroke and heart attack have been reported. These effects occurred at the normal dosage of Vyvanse. The adults are at a greater risk of facing the adverse heart effects because with the passing age, number of different cardiac defects manifest themselves such as any previous heart attacks or valve problem. These conditions usually exacerbate the already weakened condition of the heart which results in further problems with the use of stimulant drugs such as Vyvanse. Any central nervous system drug being used for the treatment of ADHD could have a potential effect on the cardiovascular system. Vyvanse is no differnt. It has been seen that even with the moderated dosage of Vyvanse , patients have suffered an increase in their blood pressure (in the range of about 6 to 10 mm of Hg) as well as an accompanied by an increase in heart rate(5 to 10 beats per minute). These are just moderate estimates and in some patients, these could potentially go even beyond that. These changes donot have any short term effects but the patients should be placed under observation in order to detect any sudden and large changes in heart rate and blood pressure. Moreover, before prescribing Vyvanse to patients with ADHD, a complete cardiovascular checkup is advised to

find out any underlying problems that could be exacerbated with use of Vyvanse such as high blood pressure or any previous heart attacks. Vyvanse interact with the cardiovascular system to produce effect such as high blood pressure, increased heart rate, chest pains or irregular heart beats. Studies have been conducted to determine the relation between the use of Vyvanse and any cardiovascular adverse effects that might occur with its usage. As a rule of thumb, any patient who is being considered for the treatment of ADHD with stimulant drugs such as Vyvanse should be carefully evaluated to find out about any previous history of cardiovascular problems. During the treatment with Vyvanse, if the patient develop any symptoms such as chest pain , irregular heart beats or elevated blood pressure, the drug should be stopped immediately and a complete check up of the patient is advised to find out any cardiac defects that might have been overlooked or have developed since the last checkup.
