Accolade
Danville received the 2014
Governor’s Awards in the
Arts, Kentucky’s highest
honor in the arts.

Welcome to Boyle County, home
to what is quickly becoming one
of the most celebrated cities in the
country: Danville. Not only has
Danville been selected as one of
the Top 10 Small Towns in America
by Livability.com, but it also landed
on our Top 10 Towns for Historic
Preservation list. The city has
received a Great American Main
Street Award from the National
Trust for Historic Preservation and
was picked as one of the “Best of
the Road” by Rand McNally. Money
magazine named it the fourth-best
place to retire in 2011.
Residents enjoy a small-town
atmosphere with a full helping
of cultural amenities, including
festivals that unite the community.
Constitution Square is an historic
landmark in downtown Danville,
where the state constitution was
signed. It’s also a gathering place
for events such as the Kentucky
State BBQ Festival and a series of
outdoor movies known as the Lawn
Chair Theater. Boyle County is the
home of the Great American Brass
Band Festival and the Perryville
Battlefield, the site of Kentucky’s
largest Civil War battle. This area
benefits from all four seasons, and
outdoor recreation can be enjoyed
year round. Shopping in Downtown
Danville, hiking, fishing and
biking are just some of the things
to do here.
Boyle County is home to a wide
variety of businesses, including
nationally known manufacturing
companies like American Greetings,
Timberland, Panasonic and
Caterpillar. The Danville-Boyle
County Airport accommodates
corporate jets and provides
hangar space. Recent roadway
improvements have made getting
to major transportation routes easier.
There’s a saying in Boyle
County, which sums up the way
residents and business owners feel:
“It’s better here.”

Danville’s Main Street
– and beyond – is thriving

W

ith more than 100 downtown renovation
projects under its belt, a dynamic economic
revitalization agenda and a burgeoning new
retail and restaurant cluster on South Fourth Street,
Danville continues to evolve as one of the region’s
go-to destinations.
Thanks to smart planning, the city has taken advantage of its
historic buildings and quaint downtown to create an economically
thriving center that vigorously supports existing businesses and
attracts the retail, restaurant and service businesses the public wants.
Alcohol Sales Boost Business
“We worked hard to expand sales of alcohol in 2010, and since
then we have seen a flourishing of smaller, independent restaurants
and venues in the downtown business district,” says Jody Lassiter,
president and CEO of the Danville-Boyle County Economic
Development Partnership. “In addition to providing food services,
for example, restaurants are able now to host special events and
many of them have live music.”

A Festive Location

Downtown promotion has been a major focus
of Heart of Danville, the city’s 28-year-old Main
Street revitalization program. The organization
enthusiastically markets Danville businesses,
garnering both local and regional attention that
in turn supports economic development. Danville’s
annual calendar of popular festivals and special
events also contributes to economic growth, from
the Great American Brass Band Festival in June,
which brought 40,000 people downtown, to
Oktoberfest and Christmas festivities.
“Our goal is to connect the dots,” Lassiter says.
“We want to improve options for local people,
and also bring people in for events. When they
are here for an event, they’ll have a great lunch
or dinner, or a libation at one of our breweries,
or go shopping. You have to connect all these
to really succeed.”
South Fourth Street
Recently, a particular bright spot has been the
area along South Fourth Street, known as SoFo,
which is “breaking out on its own,” Lassiter says.
New businesses are enjoying great success,

joining established concerns and creating a new
energy for the area. Jane Barleycorn’s Market and Bar
offers a staggering assortment of fine bourbons and
other spirits, beer, wine, cheese and chocolate – in
addition to special events and live music. Nearby
Taqueria Los Amigos, a family-owned restaurant
serving authentic Mexican cuisine, has already built
a large, loyal following. The restaurant not only
provides a convenient stop for downtown shoppers,
but draws many people into the area.
Area retail stores include Muddy Creek, which
specializes in handmade folk art and also hosts
pottery painting events. And Vestiary’s cool, modern
interior is a flattering backdrop for its contemporary
ladies’ wear.
“Our location has been great – it even surprised
me,” says Cassie Baeker, who opened Vestiary
(“a room full of clothes”) in summer 2014. “I really
like how if you come to South Fourth you can kind
of get everything covered – you can have lunch
or dinner at the Mexican restaurant, go shopping
and then stop and have a drink at Barleycorn’s.
And as more people get out and come down,
it will only get better.”

Downtown Danville hosts numerous events each
year like the Great American Brass Band Festival.

Things To Do

Local Flavor
One of the quickest, easiest and most enjoyable ways to get to know a city is find out where and
what the locals love to eat. A healthy independent restaurant scene shows people truly put their
money where their mouths are, while checking out local menus gives a taste of what those mouths
prefer. Here’s a sampling:
Coffee

The Hub Coffee House & Cafe
The Hub Coffee House & Cafe isn’t just any old coffee shop. While this quaint café can serve up a mean latte,
its regulars know The Hub best for its menu of pastries, quiches, salads, wraps and ciabatta bread sandwiches.
It’s the perfect stop for a delicious meal or a quick caffeine infusion.
Southern Cooking

American Fare

Cue on Main

Cheddar’s Casual Cafe

Southern and traditional fare gets a sophisticated
fine tuning at Cue on Main, one of Danville’s more
upscale dining destinations, serving breakfast, lunch
and dinner. Sandwiches and burgers are served
alongside sea scallops and filet mignon, making the
Cue a perfect choice for a wide range of palates,
occasions and budgets.

Out-of-town visitors will be happy to see this familiar
face in Danville. The popular chain restaurant is known
for its crowd favorites, including top sirloin, fish tacos
and New Orleans pasta—and is the type of restaurant
the whole gang will look forward to visiting. Remember,
no meal at Cheddar’s is complete without a Legendary
Monster Cookie for dessert.

Pizza

Bluegrass Pizza and Pub
Bluegrass Pizza & Pub is a labor of love for owners
Colin and Melissa Masters, who proudly serve Danville’s
only wood-fired pie, crafted to order with made freshdaily dough and as many locally sourced toppings as
they can round up. Even better? They offer a robust
selection of craft beers to wash it all down.

Our service
is what sets
us apart.

Mexican

Taqueria Los Amigos
Taqueria Los Amigos is just the place to satisfy a
hankering for authentic, street-style Mexican tacos.
This festive, family-run eatery opened in 2014 to rave
reviews from the community. Tip: These tacos are
best enjoyed with a few thinly sliced radishes and
a squeeze of lime.
Pub Grub

Mallard’s
Diners hungry for hot wings, barbecue or burgers
with a side of live entertainment will enjoy Mallard’s.
This pub-style eatery also features entrée and side
dish options, cold brews and plenty of sports. It’s
a great place to catch the big game or meet up
with friends.

Things To Do

Arts & Culture
Arts destinations, museums and community events make cities unique, draw tourists and keep
residents entertained while continually experiencing new things. Here’s a snapshot of the cultural
options around Danville.

The Farm

If you're planning a trip, check
out The Farm, a working farm
home. The home offers a
private getaway but is still
fairly close to Lexington and
Louisville. Guests can simply
relax or get a full ag
experience by working with
the farm animals.

History

Past Connections
Kentucky became a state in 1792, when its constitution was signed
in Danville’s Constitution Square. The park is home to several original
and replica historic structures of the era, and is also headquarters of
the county’s economic development campus. Ten constitutional
conventions were held at the stately Boyle County Courthouse – well
worth a visit. The 1862 Danville National Cemetery is the resting place
for Civil War dead. And the 1861 Battle of Perryville, the bloodiest battle
in Kentucky history, is memorialized with a reenactment each October
and a museum. McDowell Park, which is located near Centre College
and the First Presbyterian Church and is listed on the National Register
of Historic Places, is the site of a statue commemorating the Confederate
States of America.

Events and Festivals

Cultural Celebrations
The annual Great American
Brass Band Festival is one of the
most beloved, bringing some
40,000 fans to town each year in
June for music, food, fireworks, a
hot air balloon race and other fun.
The Forkland Heritage Festival
& Revue presents life as it was
lived in old times, complete with
traditional country music and
working craftspersons.
Each September, festival-goers
flock to Oktoberfest on Main for
good food, live music and fun. The
festival's vendors offer foods from
their restaurants and beers from
regional breweries, as well as
European style brews.
Literature lovers shouldn't miss
the Writers Day Celebration at
Penn's Store in Gravel Switch, a
month-long event that brings in
songwriters, poets, authors, and
more for sessions and lectures.

Museums

Treasured Relics

Art

Venues with Vibe
The Arts Commission of Danville/Boyle County has been fostering art
awareness, education and events since 1998. Among the many must-do
events it sponsors are the twice-yearly Gallery Hop, in which downtown
businesses stay open late to host gallery-goers, and the biannual Art-full
Raffle, which raises funds for the McKune Arts Scholarship. The
Community Arts Center offers classes in dance, music and visual arts,
and is a mainstay of the local art scene. The center offers workshops,
exhibits and performances.
On the Centre College campus, the Jones Visual Arts Center is where
glass artist Stephen Rolfe Powell teaches students in a studio. Centre also
is home to the 85,000-square-foot Norton Center for the Arts, where
visitors can attend an array of performances and events. For theaterlovers, the Pioneer Playhouse serves dinner and a live show from Tuesday
through Saturday in the summer. The West T. Hill Community Theatre
produces plays year-round and offers a children’s theater program.

For quieter enjoyment of the local
cultural scenes, take a tour of the
Ephraim McDowell House Museum,
a National Historic Landmark named

Natural Attractions

Boyle County has two highly regarded golf courses: Old Bridge Golf
Club and Danville Country Club. Old Bridge is a semi-private venue
near the banks of Herrington Lake. Constructed in 1989, its 18 holes
span 6,790 yards. Danville Country Club is a private facility that opened
in 1924. In 1998 it added the clubhouse that holds a restaurant, card
room, locker room and shower facilities for members. The club also
has tennis courts and an outdoor pool.

The Central Kentucky Wildlife
Refuge is 15 minutes outside
Danville, complete with 5 miles of
trails and a 500-acre preserve for
a wide variety of birds, plants and
other wildlife. The refuge is open
year round from dawn to dusk.
Herrington Lake, the deepest lake
in Kentucky, offers plenty of boating
opportunities and fishing spots.
Cast for bass, catfish and bluegill.

Parks

PlayLands
Those looking to play volleyball or disc golf can visit Henry Jackson
Park in Danville, which also has paved walking trails, baseball fields and
several playground areas. At Cowan Street Park, an open field allows
a variety of uses, including football, soccer and baseball practices.
A basketball court and playgrounds are also in the park.

Lightning Valley Motorsports Park

Full-Throttle Fun
Lightning Valley Motorsports Park
on U.S. 127 in Junction City is a
one-fifth-mile clay oval that is ideal
for kart racing. It hosts numerous
races, many of which have large
purses, during a long season that
stretches from mid-March to early
November. Most action takes place
on Saturday nights.

Recreation Complex

Stay Fit

Airing It Out

Parks in Boyle County provide residents and visitors with activities
to enjoy year round, and Millennium Park in Danville is one of the
biggest in the area. Millennium features soccer, baseball, softball and
football fields along with a skate park, playgrounds, dog park, picnic
areas, walking trails and a lake.

The William E. “Bunny” Davis
Recreation Complex is another
resource for residents, with
racquetball and tennis courts,
an outdoor 25-meter swimming
pool, step/aerobic and dance
classes, and free weights and
cardiovascular equipment areas.
There is also a wallyball court,

Boyle County and Danville Schools give
students a competitive edge for the future

ccording to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the number
of STEM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics) jobs will increase 17 percent by 2018, and some
1.2 million of those jobs will go unfilled due to lack of qualified workers.
Administrators at Boyle County Schools and the Danville Independent
School District are working to ensure their students aren’t part of that statistic.

STEM-ulating the
Curriculum
In 2014, the Boyle County
Schools district received a
$35,000 grant from Project Lead
the Way, a national organization
that partners with schools to
develop programs aimed at
preparing students to compete in
a global marketplace. The district
is using the grant money and the
Project Lead the Way partnership
to incorporate STEM into its
elementary, middle and high
school curricula – even as early
as kindergarten. Superintendent
Mike LaFavers tapped Maddie
Larson, a 2013 Vanderbilt University
graduate in chemical engineering
and Boyle County native, to help
coordinate the program.
“With the elementary school
students, we’ll start with small
projects – like building a paintbrush
– to get them interested in STEM,”
Larson says. “It gets them to think
outside the box and to learn problemsolving skills through engineering.”
Larson says the middle school
curriculum will build on the
project-based learning model,
and in high school, students
will be able to choose from
STEM electives, such as Intro
to Engineering Design, during
which students learn to design
model trains using AutoCAD
software and Computer and
Software Engineering. The school
system plans to phase in more
courses at the high school level
– including Biochemical
Engineering – qualifying the
school for Project Lead the Way
certification, which allows high
school students to receive up to

six credit hours through the
University of Kentucky College
of Engineering.
LaFavers says the program
will not only help prepare students
for those STEM jobs in the future,
but for whatever career they
might pursue.
“They're not all going to be
engineers,” he says of students,
“but through Project Lead the Way,
they're learning communication
skills and problem-solving skills
and those 21st-century skills our
employers will need them to have
– regardless of the type of job.”
Technology Rules
Danville Independent School
District works to instill in students
those 21st-century skills – creativity,
collaboration, critical thinking
and communication - required
for them to compete in a
technology-driven society.
The school system implemented
a plan in 2014 to integrate
technology into every facet of
learning within K-12 classrooms.
Beginning in kindergarten,
students will be introduced
to computer coding and STEMrelated extracurricular activities.
Both teachers and students are
encouraged to bring and use
personal tablets, smartphones
and other electronic devices to
aid in project-based learning.
"The Danville Independent
School District believes in
technological exposure, experience
and integration across all content
and beginning with the earliest
ages," says Danville ISD
Superintendent Dr. Keith Look.
"While specific pre-engineering

programs at Bate Middle School
and Danville High School will
sound more technology heavy, it
is false to overlook its continuous,
seamless, rigorous and cuttingedge application in elementary
math, middle school English or
high school science, for example."
The district’s focus on
innovation encourages students
to develop an entrepreneurial
spirit and become problem solvers,
rather than simply consumers of
knowledge. Bate Middle School
is an excellent example of the
district’s commitment to innovative
teaching techniques. Bate was
named an Exemplar School by
the Partnership for 21st Century
Schools, a national coalition of
business and education leaders
and policymakers that works to
give the country’s students a
competitive edge for tomorrow’s
jobs. Bate was recognized for
redesigning the curriculum to
incorporate critical thinking,
collaboration and communication
through student group and
individual projects.

LIVING

Education
Strong schools inspire homeowners to spend locally, attract new residents, lure companies
dependent on a skilled workforce, and in many cases, enhance a town’s entertainment scene.
Here’s an overview of the quality schools impacting Danville far beyond the classroom.

The Kentucky School for the Deaf in
Danville provides residential, outreach
and instructional programs for students
who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Get Ready, Kids

The Boyle County School District, a top 20 school district in
Kentucky, includes Junction City, Perryville and Woodlawn elementary
schools, as well as Boyle County Middle and High School. Boyle County
Schools offer a wide variety of opportunities for all students, including
dual college credit, state championship extra-curricular activities,
intervention and accelerated programs. The Danville School District
boasts more than an 80 percent acceptance rate for graduates to
college. Additionally, the Kentucky School for the Deaf has been
offering education to hearing impaired children in all grade levels since
it was established in 1823.

And for those youngsters who
aren't quite old enough to attend
school, Wilderness Trace Child
Development Center serves
children from birth through age
5 by providing educational and
therapeutic services for children
with and without disabilities. It's
the only school of its kind in the
state, and the setting allows
typical children to interact and
communicate alongside children
of the same ages with special
needs, helping all youngsters
to thrive.

Private Schools

Specialized Learning
Danville-Boyle County is also home to outstanding private offerings,
including Danville Montessori School that was founded in 1975 and
offers pre-primary classes, a day care, an elementary program and
an after-school program. At Danville Christian Academy, the
nondenominational school is dedicated to providing a Christian
environment for student learning and growth.

Higher Education

Colleges in Danville and Boyle County
Ranked among the top 50 liberal arts colleges in the United
States by U.S. News and World Report in 2013, Centre College’s
152-acre campus features six new buildings that offer apartment
and townhouse living for upperclassmen.
Expanding rapidly is Bluegrass Community and Technical
College, which has seen enrollment at its Danville campus
quadruple from 200 students in 2002 to more than 800 today.
Programs include computerized manufacturing and machining,
electrical technology, industrial maintenance technology,
medical and office systems technology, practical nursing
and welding technology.
“Much of the increase in the enrollment growth is due
to the continued strength of the technical programs and
the addition of general education courses that transfer
to any public four-year university or college in Kentucky,”
says campus director Erin Tipton.
Among those four-year schools is Eastern Kentucky
University, a regional, public institution offering general and
liberal arts programs and pre-professional and professional
training on both undergraduate and graduate levels. Another
higher education option is National College, a private and
for-profit school which has a campus in Danville and offers
four associate degrees and 10 diploma programs.

and feature different styles, such as canister and upright vacuums.

Timberland

Generators

Denyo
Denyo Manufacturing Corp. was founded in 1948 under the name
Japan Welding Machine Co. Ltd. The Danville Plant of Denyo
Manufacturing opened in 1995 and makes high-quality generators
for use in military and commercial applications.

Danville is home to one of
Timberland’s two North American
distribution centers. The company

Danville

That’s the name of a Danville-Boyle
County Chamber of Commerce program that
gives prospective business owners all the
information they need for a quick and speedy
launch of their company. Jump Start brings
together representatives of every regulating
agency in the city and county, who meet with
the new business owner in a group setting.
Represented at the sessions are: Alcohol
Beverage Control, Danville Architectural
Heritage Board, Chamber of Commerce,
City Engineer, Codes Enforcement, County
Engineer, Economic Development Partnership,
Fire Marshall, Health Department and
Planning and Zoning and county and state
building inspectors.
“The session can include a visit to the
business owner’s future site to inform them
about codes, licenses and other regulations
to help them open their doors as soon as
possible,” says Paula Fowler, Danville-Boyle
County Chamber of Commerce executive
director. “Jump Start simplifies the
regulations process.”

Relieves Much of the Stress
Amy Hazlett, owner of Amy D. Hazlett Allstate
Insurance Agency, recently participated in the Jump
Start program before opening her business in the
Kroger Plaza off Highway 150/127 Bypass in Danville.
She says Jump Start helped relieve much of the stress
associated with starting a business, and helped her
avoid making what could have been a costly mistake.
“One important aspect I learned with Jump Start
is that in the Kroger Plaza where I’m located, a state
inspector had to look at my building before it became
inhabitable,” she says. “I wanted to make upgrades,
but the state inspector had to even approve certain
types of woods and framing materials. The state
has strict codes, and I probably would have been
noncompliant if I didn’t learn about the state
inspection requirements through Jump Start.”
Other recent Jump Start participants include
Ann Clay Harris, who opened A & L Accessories,
a purse, jewelry and clothing store on Main Street,
and Lourdes De La Cruz, a recent Henry Clay High
School graduate who opened an authentic Mexican
restaurant on Fourth Street called Taqueria Los Amigos.
Take Away Several Headaches
Large companies can also be a part of Jump Start,
as evidenced by Denyo Manufacturing Corp. The
company, which recently underwent a $7 million
expansion, manufactures large, quiet, diesel-enginedriven generators often used as full power sources at
outdoor events - and even by the military in Afghanistan.
“With Jump Start, we met with state inspectors
and utility company representatives who usually

take days to track down, and they signed off on
important site drawings we needed for electric, gas,
water, phone and so forth,” says Joey Harris, Denyo
Manufacturing Corp. plant manager. “The DanvilleBoyle County chamber set up the meetings and took
away several of the headaches associated with such
a large endeavor. I recommend Jump Start to anyone
starting or expanding any business, whether the
company is large or small.”

business: Chamber Report

Oh YEA!

Tools for Business, $LN, YEA! head the list
When the Young Entrepreneurs
Academy – or YEA! – was introduced
to the community in 2012 by the
Danville-Boyle County Chamber
of Commerce, only 11 students
participated. That number increased
to 25 students in 2014.
“In its third year, the
entrepreneur initiative became a
one-credit elective pilot course at
Boyle County High School,” says
Paula Fowler, chamber executive
director. “The chamber would like
it to eventually be made available
in middle schools and the Danville
Schools district.”
YEA! is a national program
involving a yearlong class that
helps students develop business
ideas and write business plans. It
helps build confident leaders and

teaches students how to make
a job instead of taking a job.
“The chamber brought this
program to central Kentucky,”
Fowler says. “It is steadily
building momentum.”
Save Local Now
The chamber is also involved in
$LN, or Save Local Now. $LN is a
free mobile app that allows anyone
who downloads the app to receive
deals, discounts and event updates
from local businesses involved in
the program.
Tools for Business
The chamber has posted
a Tools of Business section at
www.danvilleboylechamber.com,
with information to help local
companies. Some of the many

categories include Just Starting
Out, Selling to the Government,
Think Globally, Green Business
Practices and Tools for Tough
Economic Times, to name a few.
Kentucky Work
Ready Community
Boyle County has become
recertified as a Kentucky Work
Ready Community, assuring
employers that the local workforce
has the skills for existing jobs
and can master technologies for
future jobs. Counties must meet
six criteria to be Work Ready:
educational attainment, high
school graduation rate, digital
literacy, soft-skills development,
community commitment and
National Career Readiness.

Living
green
starts from the ground up.
Living green is making sure the air in your home is healthy for your family
to breathe. Test your home for radon and build radon-resistant.
It's easy. That's living healthy and green.
