DESCRIPTION: This bulletin describes the steps necessary to add or replace the cabin air f ilter f or the XG, Sonata and Santa Fe v ehicles (see table below f or application and part numbers). The cabin air f ilter is a replaceable paper element f ilter that remov es particulates such as dust f rom the air. The cabin air f ilter f or these v ehicles is located in a slot between the blower motor and the air conditioning ev aporator. It is accessed by remov ing the glov e box and glov e boxhousing. The ty pical serv ice interv al is 12,000 miles or 1 y ear, whichev er occurs f irst. More f requent maintenance may be required in v ery dusty env ironments which may clog the f ilter. A major benef it of the f ilter (if installed) is that it reduces the possibility that mold and mildew may accumulate on the ev aporator. Particulate debris becomes trapped in the replaceable f ilter and is remov ed f rom the sy stem during routine maintenance. Unwanted odors may also be remedied by replacing the air f ilter. NOTE Replacement of the cabin air filter is considered a maintenance item and not covered under warranty. * The original part number 97619-38000 was a particulate (paper) and odor (carbon) ty pe f ilter as described in TSB 99-97-002. The f ilter has since been superseded toP/N 97619-38100 which is a particulate (paper) ty pe f ilter. ** For XG and Sonata, the installation method changed ef f ectiv e 3/29/03. The f iltration sy stem also changed f rom a one piece f ilter, to a two piece f ilter. The f ilters are not interchangeable. REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE: 1. Open the glov e box and remov e the 2 rubber stop blocks f rom each side of the glov e box. A. First pull the stop block toward y ou (1). A. Then pull the f ront edge in toward the inside of the glov e box and pull it out to remov e it (2).

1. Remov e the glov e box damper by gently pulling the mounting pin out, then f eed the mounting pin through the hole. Hold/support the glov e box to prev ent it f rom swinging wide open when the damper is remov ed. Lower the glov e box.
NOTE For XG and Sonata produced after 3/29/03, skip to page 6. 1. Remov e the 4 mounting screws f or the glov e box. A. There are 2 cap screws with 10 mm heads (1). A. The other 2 screws are phillips head sheet metal screws (2).
1. Remov e the glov e box and set aside. 1. For Santa Fe and XG only :Remov e the cov er on the right side of the glov e box. This will prov ide access to the mounting screws of the glov e box and housing.

1. Remov e the glov e box housing. A. Remov e the 2 Phillips screws (1) on each side of the housing. A. Remov e the nut (2) on the stud behind the glov e box latch. A. Unplug the glov e box lamp. A. Slide out the housing and set i t aside.
1. Mov e the lower dash panel out of the way by disconnecting the plastic lock tabs and pushing the panel down enough to gain access to the cabin air f ilter access door.

1. Af ter pushing the lower cov er away , y ou now hav e access to the f ilter door and f ilter.
1. Use y our f inger to pull the lock tab down and toward y ou to remov e the f ilter access door.
1. CAREFULLY remov e the air f ilter by sliding it straight out. Rough handling of the f ilter during remov al may spill

1. Install a new cabin air f ilter. Insure the arrow points in the direction of airf low (arrow points toward ev aporator).
1. Reassemble as f ollows: A. Reinstall the f ilter cov er. A. Reinstall the lower dash panel. A. Reinstall the glov e box and connect the glov e box lamp. A. Reinstall the glov e box, damper and rubber stops. A. Reinstall the right side dash panel cov er (XG and Santa Fe). FOR XG AND SONATA PRODUCED AFTER 3/29/03 1. Swing (lower) the glov e box down to gain access to the cabin air f ilter door.Twist the lock 90° counterclockwise to the horizontal position to unlock the door.

1. Remov e the upper f ilter by pulling on the grab tab at the bottom of the f ilter.
1. Remov e the lower f ilter by lif ting the f ilter (1), and when it gains enough clearance, pull it out like the upper f ilter (2).

1. The new f ilters (P/N 97619-3D000) hav e a beaded end on one side, and a groov ed end on the opposite side.Install the lower f ilter with the beaded side down.Install the upper f ilter also with the beaded side down, and insure the bead and groov e interlock.
