Again, if something makes you look twice, it is SUSPICIOUS and should be reported immediately. Don’t assume! Let your local law enforcement respond to make sure everything is alright.

BE NEIGHBORLY

Stay in touch with your trusted neighbors. If you’re going to be out of town for awhile, going to have someone strange to the neighborhood checking on your home, or  just simply changing your routine: let your neighbor(s) know. REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

Did your dog wake you up in the middle of the night? Did you hear something moving around inside or around your home? Does your neighbor, who is at work during the day, have a vehicle in the driveway or someone you don’t recognize walking around their home? In short, is there something out of the ordinary? Whether at night or during the day, if something is different, out of place, abnormal, etc… then it is SUSPICIOUS! In many cases, when burglaries or thefts have been investigated by law enforcement, a neighbor is identified who saw or heard the perpetrators who committed the crime. Please, take the time to report things that are out of the ordinary. If you do, your community will be a much safer place to live. REMOVE IT OR LOSE IT!

Car burglars are running rampant in Manatee County. The recent rash of car burglaries has had one simple common factor: EASY OPPORTUNITY OPPORTUNITY.. Car burglars

Do you sometimes let your kids go online without adequate adult supervision? What does adequate mean? Simple: Do you know where your kid is online? Do you know who they are talking to? Can you see what they are viewing? If you answered NO to any of these questions, then your kid could be in danger. Whether from a predator or from being bullied, your kid could be an easy target and it could be happening right r ight under your own nose without any signs of trouble. The answers: 1) Educate yourself on computer basics before it’s too late. 2) Keep the computer in your room, not theirs. 3) You keep the password and don’t give it to your kid. 4) Put a good spyware program on your computer. REMEMBER: Your kid’s future is in your hands. Protect them. Contact: Deputy Steve Ogline, Crime Prevention, Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, 941-747-3011, ext. 2586

Snapper catch termed ‘phenomenal’ by most fishers By Capt. Mike Heistand It’s snapper to the left, snapper to the right, snapper here, snapper there … you get the idea. Snapper, be they lane, mangrove or several other species, are thick near any type of structure in the bays and out in the Gulf of Mexico. There are even good reports of 5-pound snapper coming from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge piers, huge fish for inshore anglers. In the Gulf, amberjack are being caught off the deeper reefs. There also are good grouper reports. Capt. Tom Chaya on the Dolphin Dreams said that kingfish and big Spanish mackerel are feeding on the big bait schools throughout the shallow Gulf. He’s catching lots of sharks and a few tarpon while the big fish are feeding on schools of threadfin herring. There are also nice red fish populations in Sarasota bay. “Snook will make a better showing on th e flats as the water cools,” he said, “and the best bet for snook is night fishing under the lights and all the passes.” Capt. Zach Zacharias on the Dee Jay II out of Parrot Cove Marina in Cortez said the past week

Capt. Logan  Bystrom, right, and Trey Daughtery reeled in a double header of  sail  fish while sight  casting with shiners Sept. 26 from the Gulf waters 7  miles off of Anna  Maria. The sail  fi  fish were released.   Islander Photo:  Emily Guerra has seen “a decent amount of kingfish and Spanish mackerel running along the beaches of Anna Maria and Longboat Key. As the huge amount of bait fish in the Tampa/Sarasota Bay estuary starts pouring out into the Gulf, there should be some top action with all

the critters that pass by.” Capt. Zach added that the best flounder fishing of the year is between now and Christmas. of Annie’s Bait & Tackle Capt. Sam Kimball out of Annie’s on Cortez Road said snapper fishing is phenomenal

Mark Johnston, also out of Annie’s, said redHe’s also catchfish action is fair to excellent right now. He’s ing keeper trout and snook in the backwater, while his offshore trips are producing snapper and mackerel. Bill Lowman at Island Discount Tackle at Catchers Marina in Holmes Beach said mackerel fishing in the Gulf is good, and snapper seem to be everywhere. Look for some underwater structures for the best catches. The snapper are coming in a variety of species: mangrove, lane and true American red. Backwater action is good for redfish and more mangrove snapper. The “snook bite” is excellent for this time of year, he added. Bob Kilb at the Rod & Reel Pier said fishing has been excellent of late. Big red fish are being caught off the dock, as well as black drum, mackerel, lots of mangrove snapper and keeper-size snook at night. Whitebait is thick near the pier, too, Bob added. Dave Sork at the Anna Maria City Pier said anglers there have been catching mackerel, black drum, redfish and big snook. Mangrove snapper are everywhere as well, plus a few sharks. Dave Johnson at Snead Island Crab House said snapper are thick around the dock at the House, and there are also lots of good reports of snapper coming from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge piers, some up to

Boat thieves cruise into Tampa Bay area A rash of boat thefts in the Tampa Bay area have law enforcement of ficials scouting area waters and issuing warnings to local boaters. Warnings in recent months have come from the U.S. Coast Guard, area police agencies including the Manatee County Sheriff ’s Of fice, boating organizations, insurance firms and state law enforcement and fish and wildlife agencies. In mid-summer, law enforcement of ficials reported the theft of  five boats from docks in Pinellas County. In each case, the boats could hit high speeds and hold lots of fuel, with the vessel values ranging from $200,000 to $1 million. Private investigator Charlie Meacham, hired by insurance companies to look into boat thefts, told the Tampa Tribune in August that he believes the boats will be used for smuggling people from Cuba to the United States or to Mexico. Meacham recently went to Cancun, where he reportedly found 44 boats stolen from Florida. Island law enforcement of ficials have not reported boat thefts, but police reports this summer documented equipment thefts from boats. Last month, a Holmes Beach resident told police that someone stole a $3,500 outboard motor from a boat at his home on the bay.

In late May, four residents reported the theft of equipment from their boats on the Island. In an effort to deter boat thieves and to aid in the recovery of stolen vessels, the National Insurance Crime Bureau recommends:

• Before purchasing, check to make sure the hull identification number on a boat matches the HIN on the registration or title. • Do not leave keys in the boat and always shut the engine off when disembarking. • Dock the craft in well-lit areas. • Secure the boat to the dock with a locked steel cable. • Remove expensive equipment from

the boat when not in use. • Disable the boat when not in use by shutting off fuel lines and removing the battery or the distributor cap. • Use a trailer hitch lock after parking a boat on its trailer. • Install an alarm system and a killswitch in the ignition system. • Mark the boat and equipment with the vessel’s HIN. • Engrave a driver’s license number in a hidden location on the boat, as well as the engine, ship-to-shore radio, depth sounder, compass, stereo, trailer and other expensive items. • Take photos of the boat, its HIN and equipment. Government  of  ficials say boaters can protect their investments by using marinas and boat  storage facilities such as those found at the  Bradenton Beach  Marina.

Wildlife Inc. rescues, releases injured heron Damen Hurd and others associated with the Bradenton Beach-based Wildlife Inc. devoted days to trying to capture the great blue heron with a Milwaukee’s Best beer can stuck on its beak. The bird had been spotted in various locations in west Manatee County, first at the Colonial Grand apartments in Bradenton and later at various locations by the bay. “Since the bird was able to fly, it was dif ficult to catch,” said Gail Straight of Wildlife Inc. “He was finally caught approximately 10 days later around a retention pond near Cortez Road in the Palma Sola area.” Hurd used a net gun to catch the bird. “It meant a lot to me,” Hurd said of the effort to catch the bird. Wildlife Inc. doctored the heron, cutting off the can and treating an injury to the bird’s left eye. Early Sept. 4, Straight said the heron “is now looking good” and ready for a release. The release came later that day near where the bird was first sighted at the Colonial Grand apartments. “Boy, was he happy

to be free again,” Straight said. Hurd said he hoped people could learn from the bird’s plight. “I just hope someone learns a lesson about littering,” Hurd said. According to the Ocean Conservancy, the predominant type of litter leading to bird injuries is the discarded plastic six-pack harness. Birds fishing or feeding in the water can easily entangle their bills and necks in the plastic rings, which can lead to strangulation or starvation. Fishing line and other types of string also cause a significant number of  injuries and illness, as can littered cans, plastic bags and cigarette butts. A statewide effort to clean up litter will take place Saturday, Oct. 4, with the Florida Coastal Cleanup. In Manatee County, the campaign will be coordinated by Keep Manatee Beautiful, with volunteers along roads, on shores and in parks collecting litter and debris. The Island will have several volunteer registration sites, including: • Anna Maria City Hall, 10005 Gulf Drive, Anna Maria.

Wildlife Inc. spent days trying to catch and aid  this great blue heron with a can attached to its beak. The Bradenton   Beach-based non-pro fit  was  first noti fied of the bird several weeks ago, when the heron was seen near the Colonial  Grand apartments in west Bradenton.  Damen Hurd, pictured, captured the bird. • Birdie Tebbetts Field, 62nd Street and Flotilla Drive, Holmes Beach. • Coquina Beach, Bradenton Beach. Also, volunteers will be able to sign up for work details at the Cortez Bait and Seafood, 11601 Cortez Road W., Cortez, and at the pavilions on the Palma Sola Causeway/Manatee Avenue. For more information about the cleanup, call KMB at 941-795-8272, or go to the Web site at www.manateebeautiful. com.
