Many years ago, there lived a hermit in a forest in Sumatera. He did not grow foods but
depended on the jungle to survive. Soon, there was a drought, all the plants and fruit trees in the
jungle died
The old man had nothing to eat now, so he turned to begging. He went to nearby village
trying to get some food. At first, the villagers were very happy to help him. However, when he
came continually, they refused to give him any more food. They told him to grow his own food.
One day, while the hermit was sitting in his hut, sad and hungry, he began to think about
growing his own food. Just then a boatman stopped by and taking on the hermit, gave him some
rice seeds.
Before the boatman went away, he said, “These seeds will grow and give you everlasting
harvest if you work very hard. If you are tired of the work, the rice plants will turn into weeds”.
The old hermit worked hard to clear the land and sowed the seeds before the rains came.
Strangely, after a short period of time, the rice was ready for harvesting. The old man got a lot of
rice from the harvest. After each harvest, the plants grew back again right away.
When the villagers heard about the hermit and his wonderful rice, they flocked to his ricefield and took home as much rice as they could.
One day, the hermit became so tired of harvesting the rice that she shouted. “Oh, stop growing,
you wretched thing!” As soon as he had said this, the rice plants turned into weeds

The Blonde and the Lawyer
A blonde and a lawyer are seated next to each other on a flight from LA to NY. The
lawyer asks if she would like to play a fun game. The blonde, tired, just wants to take a nap,
politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks.
The lawyer persists and explains that the game is easy and a lot of fun. He explains, “I
ask you a question, and if you don’t know the answer, you pay me $5.00, and vice versa.”
Again, she declines and tries to get some sleep. The lawyer, now agitated, says, “Okay, if
you don’t know the answer you pay me $5.00, and if I don’t know the answer, I will pay you
$500.00.”
This catches the blonde’s attention and, figuring there will be no end to this torment
unless she plays, agrees to the game. The lawyer asks the first question. “What’s the distance
from the earth to the moon?” The blonde doesn’t say a word, reaches into her purse, pulls out a
$5.00 bill and hands it to the lawyer. “Okay” says the lawyer, “your turn.”
She asks the lawyer, “What goes up a hill with three legs and comes down with four
legs?” The lawyer, puzzled, takes out his laptop computer and searches all his references, no
answer. He taps into the air phone with his modem and searches the net and the library of
congress, no answer. Frustrated, he sends e-mails to all his friends and coworkers, to no avail.
After an hour, he wakes the blonde, and hands her $500.
The blonde says, “Thank you”, and turns back to get some more sleep. The lawyer, who
is more than a little miffed, wakes the blonde and asks, “Well, what’s the answer?” Without a
word, the blonde reaches into her purse, hands the lawyer $5.00, and goes back to sleep.

Muslim’s Headscarf

The right to freedom of religion is enshrined in the UN charter and considered by many
to be a basic human right. Some religions require special diet, others prayer at specific times.
Why should a religious mode of dress receive as much protection as these other aspects of
religious freedom?
Many Muslim women view the veil as a means to protect their modesty and privacy. Just
as we would not force any women to be seen in public in her underwear if she did not feel
comfortable doing so, why should a woman be forced to show her hair if she does not want to?
Modesty is a personal judgement call; some are comfortable in the smallest bikini while others
prefer a lot more clothing. No one but the woman herself should make that decision.
Muslim women are not the only ones to feel coerced over their mode of dress. Most
people are affected by the societal norms surrounding them. Fashion trends could be seen in
exactly the same light as religious traditions.
Banning head coverings is only likely to provoke a more extreme reaction among highly
religious communities. Framing laws to ban only Islamic forms of dress could be considered an
attack on one religion. Feeling under attack could cause the Islamic community to close off into
itself. They could set up religious schools where their children can dress as they want them to
and not mix with children from other faiths. These effects could never be good for the integration
of society and would further the influence of extremists. Internationally, the perceived attack on
Islamic values would inflame wider Muslim opinion, feed conspiracy theories and add to the
dangerous feeling that there is a clash of civilisations.
Intolerant schools make up problems as an excuse for not allowing Muslims freedom of
religious expression. In a multicultural society, students should be aware of the different religious
practise and cultural traditions of their classmates, and be taught to understand and respect these.
Without such respect, Muslims and other groups with distinctive dress, such as Orthodox Jews
and Sikhs, will be driven out of mainstream education and forced to educate their children
separately, which will really create divisions and alienation.
Based on the above discussion, the government should not banned Muslim’s headscarf as
a part of school or office uniforms.

Cars should be banned in the city. As we all know, cars create pollution, cause a lot of road
death and other accidents.
Firstly, cars, as we all know, contribute to most of the pollution in the world. Cars emit a
deadly gas that causes illness such as bronchitis, lung cancer, and trigger of asthma. Some of
these illnesses are so bad that people can die from them.

Secondly, the city is very busy. Pedestrians wander everywhere and cars commonly hit
pedestrians in the city, which causes them to die. Cars today are our roads biggest killer.
Thirdly, cars are very noisy. If you live in the city, you may find it hard to sleep at night, or
concentrate on your homework, especially talk to someone. In conclusion, cars should be banned
from the city for the reasons listed above.
Hundreds of years ago, during the reign of the last king of Majapahit, Brawijaya, one of the
king’s wives gave birth to a girl, who was named Roro Anteng. Later this young princess married
Joko Seger, who came from a Brahman caste. Because of an unfortunate situation the couple was
forced to leave the kingdom. They settled down in the mountain area. They ruled the area and
named it “Tengger”, which was derived from the couples’ names: Roro Anteng and Joko Seger.
After several years the region flourished in prosperity, but Roro Anteng and Joko Seger were
unhappy because they did not have a child. Frustrated, they climbed the top of the mountain and
prayed night and day hoping that the gods would listen. The prayer was heard and Betoro Bromo
promised them many children. However, the couple had to promise that they would sacrifice
their youngest child in return.
Roro Anteng gave birth to a child, then another, and another. In the end Roro Anteng and Joko
Seger got 25 children. Soon it was time for them to sacrifice the youngest child, Kesuma, but the
parents just couldn’t do it. They tried to hide the child, but an eruption happened and Kesuma fell
into the crater. There was silence before they heard a voice: “I have to be sacrificed so that you
will all stay alive. From now on, you should arrange an annual offering ceremony on the 14th of
Kesodo ( the twelfth months of Tenggerese calendar)”. It was Kesuma’s voice.
Kesuma’s brothers and sisters held the offering ceremony every year. Instead of a human
being, these people collected fruits, vegetables, rice and meat to be offered to the gods. And this
has been done generation after generation until today.
