Residents encouraged Community survey reveals school district communications to spruce up homes is 72% effective By Quynh Trueblood, Superintendent of Schools The recent community survey reveals good news: 72% of our parents rate the school district’s communication as either very effective or somewhat effective. Furthermore, villagers would like to receive information from the Kohler Villager and newsletter mailings while parents prefer having conversations with teachers and administrators. Both parents and villagers identified the website as a key information tool. Encouraged by the data, the school district wants to give you information that matters to you
in ways that are easily accessible, consistently available, and accurate. To accomplish these goals, an Advisory Committee of 20 members, consisting of broad representation, has been hard at work with School Perceptions to assist the district with developing a strategic communication plan. The process involves identifying priority areas based on the survey results, review of survey comments, feedback gathered through two focus groups and a review of best practices in school communications. Work plans for priority areas identify clear tactics, access to needed resources and training,
adequate staffing, defined timelines and an opportunity for ongoing evaluation and feedback. For more information, visit the district website in the Kohler Highlights section under Strategic Communication Plan. This spring, the district will consider aligning resources and time for improving opportunities for conversations, the website, engaging the media, social media presence, and expanding channels to include e-newsletters. Most importantly, our door is always open to hear your thoughts and feedback on the district’s efforts to enhance communication with you.
By Brett Edgerle, Director of Public Works The Village of Kohler is a wonderful community and we all made a choice to live here to enjoy everything it has to offer. Parks, tree lined streetscapes, unique neighborhoods are just a part of the endearing aspect of our planned community. There is also a sense of pride and ownership. As winter wanes and spring projects go from planning to execution, please consider making minor repairs and maintenance to your home. I encourage you to take a fresh look at your home and consider tuck pointing masonry, paint exposed wood, and replace broken windows. These activities will maintain or increase value of
your homes. As a reminder, Village Ordinance 18.07.010 requires that all buildings have a weather resistant, uniform, and neighborhood compatible exterior finish. Tar Paper or similar material is not acceptable. Examples of compatible exterior finishes include well-maintained natural materials such as stucco, brick and stone; painted and stained wood in good condition; and non-faded aluminum, vinyl or cementitious siding. If you have a question as to which projects require a Building Permit, please call the Department of Public Works at 459-3881.
Whistling Straits lauded by Golf The American Club and Kohler Waters Spa earn Digest as one of the Top 100 top ratings from Forbes Greatest Golf Courses Magazine ranks course 51st in the world
Golf Digest has once again included the Straits course at Whistling Straits on its second biennial list of World’s Top 100 Greatest Golf Courses – ranking 51st in the world. The February issue of the magazine, which is the world’s most widely read golf publication, lauded the course for its “rugged fairways and windswept greens.” These accolades come on the heels of the January issue of the magazine which included Whistling Straits on its list of the Best Courses in 206 Countries. This list, which sought to highlight the
top courses in every country in the world, ranked Whistling Straits 22nd in the United States, out of a total of 15,620 courses. “We are extremely honored Whistling Straits continues to be recognized as part of Golf Digest’s elite rankings,” said Jim Richerson, General Manager & Group Director of Golf for Kohler Co. “It’s very gratifying to see the vision and hard work that went into creating Whistling Straits rewarded in such a significant way by people who have experienced many of the top courses in the
world.” The magazine’s ranking is based on an editorial review by 1,200 course-evaluation panelists across North America and more than 600 international panelists, with added insights by the editors of 30 international Golf Digest editions. The magazine noted that 46 of the 100 courses on the list were seaside venues, and that coastal courses that emulate the early originals are much in-demand among today’s golfers.
For the fifth year, the Forbes Travel Guide has honored The American Club hotel and the Kohler Waters Spa with its highest rating of Five Stars in its annual review of resorts and spas around the world. The guide is considered to be one of the most discriminating and influential arbiters of properties throughout the global luxury leisure market, and the ratings carry considerable weight within the industry. For more than 50 years, Forbes has enlisted professional inspectors to establish the benchmark for excellence in the global hospitality, and it has once again recognized these Kohler properties as among the best in the world. The American Club is the only resort in Wisconsin to receive a Forbes Five-Star rating on this year’s list, and the same is true for the Kohler Waters Spa in the spa category. Described as “Wisconsin’s cozy hidden gem,” The American Club is also highlighted by Forbes for its “outstanding service and long list of amenities,” “standout” bathrooms, and “some of the most scenic and sought-after golf courses in the country.” The Kohler Waters Spa is noted for “a number of hydrotherapy experiences you won’t find anywhere
else,” and for offering “some sort of fun and unexpected amenity at every turn.” Originally known as the Mobil Travel Guide, Forbes originated the Five-Star system in 1958 and uses a team of “professional incognito inspectors and editors” to travel the world assessing the properties. These experts base their ratings on an evaluation of more than 500 criteria and define a Forbes Travel Guide Five Star property as “a destination unto itself;” asserting that “these exceptional hotels provide a memorable experience through virtually flawless service and the finest of amenities.” Spas rated with Five Stars will “wow you with extraordinary design and facilities, and uncompromising service.” “Forbes was one of the first to appraise the market in this way, and it has long been considered the most distinguished,” said Michael Belot, General Manager of Destination Kohler. “To earn five stars again for The American Club and the Kohler Waters Spa is something we are very proud of and which we do not take for granted. I am personally appreciative to our associates for helping us achieve this distinction.” Continued on page 3

Forbes rating Continued from page 1 The Forbes ratings also recognized The Immigrant Restaurant with its elite FourStar ranking. Experts praised its “friendly and polished staff,” and made note of its “young chef’s forward thinking cuisine.” Forbes bestows its Four Stars nearly as judiciously as its Five Stars; a Four Star rated restaurant must feature “creative, complex foods,” and offer a “focus on seasonality.” The Immigrant Restaurant was the highest ranked restaurant in Wisconsin on this year’s Forbes list, and the only one to receive a Four Star rating from its experts.

New learning spaces light up minds at Kohler Library by Erin Coppersmith and Quynh Trueblood The Kohler Library is more active than ever! The Public and School library in partnership with the Kohler School Foundation joined forces to reimage spaces that would shape minds to socialize, create, and collaborate. Stop in and you’ll find new think spaces in an adult lounge, teen lounge, preschool area, new classroom, and technology bar designed to support making connections and encourage creativity and learning. Visiting author Peter Brown provided inspiration for the theme and color palette found in his picture book Mr. Tiger Goes Wild. The design process with Edmonds Business Interiors fosters a sense of belonging for all age groups and patrons. The library has changed from transactional/singular/individual spaces to collaborative/ team-oriented thinking/working spaces that also provide for individual pursuits through new space usage and furniture function. The original furniture was donated to Immanuel Lutheran Elementary School of Sheboygan for use in their library. New features include comfortable seating and workspaces designed to promote collaboration while providing a welcoming, multi section, environment. Individual and group computer workstations, LED lighting, and
standard and cafe height table surfaces offer new options. The adult lounge provides a private section where adult patrons can spend time during the day browsing or working without being in student space. New items, newspapers, magazines and seasonal book displays are also found in this section. The teen lounge features a sectional sofa, providing some privacy for middle and high school students who wish to chat about favorite books, work together on projects, or read in a comfortable place. A new Young Adult section of books is displayed in this space. The Preschool area allows caregivers a spot to bring their little ones to library during the school day. It includes comfortable small scale furniture, a reading chair, and board books. The exciting new library classroom has movable tables, ergonomic chairs and a modular sectional for smart board activities. Looking into the future, we are working on a mural that ties together the creative and functional pieces of the spaces, a chromebook cart to support a coding club and other community technology needs, and a redesign of the library conference room into a flexible-use environment. On your next visit, please us know what you think about the exciting changes in our library!

Kohler High presents Mid-winter music concert on March 15 The Kohler high school band and choir will present their Mid-Winter Music Concert on Tuesday, March 15. This concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Kohler Memorial Theatre. The 5th hour high school choir will begin the concert with a Scotish folk song entitled The Banks O’Doon. The 6th hour choir will perform a Spanish song entitled Esto Les Digo. Both choirs will join forces and sing a tribute to The Famine Song which makes reference to the 1980’s great famine of Ethiopia. The high school band will conclude the concert with three compositions from three different countries. The band will open with a lively three movement work entitled Prelude, Siciliano and Rondo written by English composer Malcolm Arnold. The band will then perform a colorful three movement work by Danish composer Johan de Meij entitled Aquarium. To complete the concert, the band will return to our home country of America to perform Pierre LaPlante’s American Riversongs. On Thursday, March 17, the Kohler middle school band and choir will present their Mid-Winter Music Concert. The concert, featuring the middle school bands
and choirs, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Kohler Memorial Theatre. The 6th grade choir will begin the concert with Rounds Around the World and John Denver’s Country Roads. The 7-8th grade choir will perform Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening made famous by renowned poet Robert Frost. The choirs will also perform Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked and Always Look on the Brighter Side from the musical Spamolot. The 6th grade band will perform two selections. They will begin with Fanfare on Ode to Joy and finish with an English folksong called Shepherd’s Hey. The 7-8th grade band will finish the concert with four selections. The first selection is a circus march by Henry Fillmore called Headway March. The band will then play two movements from Three Ayres from Gloucester followed by a how-down called All Trails Lead West. Since the concert falls on St. Patrick’s Day, the band will finish the concert with the March of the Irish Guard. The choirs are directed by Lori Hucke and the bands are under the direction of Richard Tengowski. Both concerts are free and open to the public.

Free Concert at Grace UCC on April 1 The public is invited to an evening of music at Grace UCC, 500 School Street, on April 1 starting at 7:00 p.m. This evening will open with some jazz renditions of popular music followed by a performance by the Concordia Singers under the leadership of Mr. Frederick Strassburger. The
program will conclude with Dan Ognavic playing the new Rodgers organ. This concert is free and open to the public. Refreshments will follow the music and enhance the evening. Start the weekend off right with an evening of heart warming music.
Grace UCC announces Holy Week schedule Grace United Church of Christ, under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Thomas M. Schroeder will offer several special services of worship in Holy Week, March 20-27, and invites the public to participate fully with the congregation. On Palm Sunday, March 20, the people of Grace UCC will celebrate Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem as they gather in worship at 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. Rev. Schroeder will present the proclamation of God’s word based on the entrance passage from The Gospel according to Mark. The Children’s Choir, under the direction of Mr. Curt Joa, will sing at 10. On Maundy Thursday, March 24, at a 7:30 p.m. the congregation will worship God in a service of tenebrae (shadows) which includes the Sacrament of Holy Communion. In the service those gathered will encounter the pain and agony experienced by Jesus as he moves in obedience to God’s will toward the cross. As the story progresses the sanctuary grows dark and worshipers are confronted with an emotional experience of the depth of God’s love for us as Jesus gives himself up to death on the cross. The senior choir, under the direction of Mrs. Audrey Braatz, will add to the sensation through a proclamation in music. The people of Grace Church invite all who gather in Christ’s
name to fully participate at the Lord’s table. The people of Grace Church will participate in a Good Friday service in Sheboygan Falls from noon until 1:00 p.m. on March 25 at First Reformed Church in Sheboygan Falls. This Ecumenical service will have clergy from various churches in the community participating. The public is invited to this service. A “Walk of the Cross” will begin at 11:30 a.m. starting at the Sheboygan Falls Municipal building and will wind its way through the streets of Sheboygan Falls as it moves to the host church. People who wish to walk are invited to meet at the Municipal building at 11:25 a.m. On Sunday, March 27th, Easter morning begins with a 7:30 a.m. Discovery Service of light and word and will feature Rev. Schroeder preaching about the enfolding events of Easter as the first disciples encountered the empty tomb. The 10:00 Celebration Service will feature special music by the senior choir and brass. This service of word, song, and The Sacrament of Holy Communion will praise God in the midst of celebrating the empty tomb.
