10 girls to compete in 2016 Peony Pageant

VAN WERT — The 2016 Peony
Pageant will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at
The Marsh Auditorium, 1229 Lincoln
Hwy, Van Wert.
This year, there are 10 area schools
being represented by some of the finest students from Antwerp, Crestview,
Delphos Jefferson, Delphos St. John’s,
Lincolnview, Parkway, Paulding, Van
Wert, Vantage Career Center and Wayne
Trace high schools.
Meet the candidates:
Kiersten Teman – Jefferson High
School
Teman is the daughter of Dan and
Maureen Teman and sister of Logan. She is
a Junior Optimist, on the yearbook staff, in
the school musical and a member Fellowship
of Christian Athletes. Teman dances for Kim
Hohman’s Dance Works and is involved
with the all-star cheer squad . She volunteers
her time as a coach for Upwards. After high
school, she will attend BGSU and major in
product development in apparel.
Maddie Pohlman – St. John’s High
School
Pohlman is the daughter of Paul and
Donna Pohlman, with siblings Joel, Chris
and Kelsey. She competes in volleyball
and basketball for the Blue Jays. She is
very involved at school as the president
of the Mission Society, Junior Optimist,
National Honor Society and CRESPI.
She is also very involved in 4-H as
she is the president of her group, the
4-H Pathfinders. She loves shopping and
spending time with her family. After high
school, she plans to major in exercise
science.

Teman
Ashton Bowersock – Lincolnview
High School
Bowersock is the daughter of Troy and
Tonya Bowersock and the sister of Alek
and Evan. She plays volleyball, basketball and runs track for the Lancers. She
is involved in several clubs at school:
Beta Club, National Honor Society, FCA,
Agents of Change, Benefit Counsel,
Spanish and Science club and concert
band. Outside of school, she attends
Calvary Church and spends time with her
family. After high school, she plans to
attend Calvin College in Michigan and
major in speech pathology.
Makayla Ryan – Vantage Career
Center
Ryan is the daughter of Lance and
Misty Ryan and a sister of Delaney and
Sidney. She is a Junior Rotarian, student ambassador and a member of the
honor society. Makayla enjoys spending
time with her family, camping and going
shopping. After high school, she plans to
attend Rhodes State and major in nursing.

Delphos — What do empty
pill bottles, sewing machines,
fresh vegetables and a simple
click on a website have in
common? These seemingly
unrelated items are all ways
people who are short on time
or short on money or both can
help alleviate a little suffering
in some poor nations and build
community at a local level.
Let’s start with those empty
pill bottles, prescription and
over the counter bottles too.
Campers and survivalists often
use them for waterproof ways
to store matches or small first
aid kits. But doctors and clinics in in impoverished
nations use them to save
lives.
Once in full swing in
Malawi, the pill bottle project
has now ended in favor of a
focus on famine relief. Malawi
is a small, landlocked country
in sub-Sahara Africa and represents some of the nations that
can benefit from the pill bottles. In poor nations, residents
often have to walk for miles
to reach a clinic or hospital. If
they given pills to take home
with them quite often they
have nothing to carry those
pills in except a wad of paper.
Not a good way to carry those
precious medicines. At the
Malawi project website readers are directed to alternative
places that accept pill bottles.
One of those alternative sites

is Matthew 25: Ministries in
Cincinnati, OH. You do need
to remove the labels before
sending them to the ministry.
Matthew 25: Ministries also
accept wheelchairs, walkers,
canes, dressings and other
medical supplies. Through
partner organizations overseas
the m25m supplies medical
goods and the partners distribute the supplies to local
health care facilities. The partner organizations, in turn, let
m25 m know that the goods
haven’t been diverted for other

You can also click your
way to doing good by simply
visiting sites online and clicking once a day. There are multiple sites online that accept
clicks including sites that work
for animals, veterans, water
problems, hunger and more.
An easy way to make clicking
for charity a part of your life is
to set aside 10 minutes a day
and click your selected charities. The charity gets a nod
and you get to feel good. At
the website Nice Things to Do,
readers can find a lengthy list
of sites that encourage viewers to click and share. That
address is nicethingstodo.net.
If you like the idea of food
for free than the Food for Free
Project might be right up your
alley. This project can be done
by one person or many. It is

also a community builder as
well. In food for project when
gardeners have excess produce
they set it out by the roadway with a big sign “Food is
Free” and anyone is welcome
to take some. Communities
from coast to coast participate, setting out tomatoes, avocados, oranges, peppers and
more. Several neighbors can
get together and share their
excess produce among themselves and with strangers too.
You just know zucchinis are
calling your name.
There is also a Food for
Free project that serves a much
greater area than just the neighborhood. This project can be
found online. And their purpose to rescue food that would
have otherwise have gone in
the dumpster and distribute to
the needy. Though they would
be happy to take your help,
please don’t confuse this marvelous project with its large
outreach with the marvelous
localized Food is Free project.
One more way to help
is buying fair trade branded
goods and foods. Fair Trade is
a trading partnership that seeks
to ensure more money from
the buyers gets into the hands
of the producers.
,In Fair Trade child labor
and forced labor policies are
followed and helps ensure
children get a chance to be
children and the chance to go
to school.

Warrant issued in
Paulding deaths
Information submitted

PAULDING — A warrant was issued today
for the arrest of Bradley R. Gillespie, age 42,
of Defiance for the murders of Hannah Fischer
and Frank Tracy, Jr. Fischer was found deceased
Feb. 9 at 119 W. Perry St., Apt. C, in Paulding.
Tracy’s body was discovered March 15 in Rochester
Cemetery in Paulding County.
Gillespie is currently in custody at the Corrections
Center of Northwest Ohio (CCNO) on charges out
of Defiance County. It is unknown at this time when
Gillespie will be arraigned in Paulding.
“I can tell you investigators have had some
huge breaks in this case over the past few weeks.
Fortunately we had some witnesses come forward
with articulate information. We were able to recover
the weapon used, as well as recover valuable evidence from the Jeep Compass that was recovered on
Feb.9 when Hannah’s body was discovered,” Sheriff
Jason K. Landers said. “The investigation has proven Frank and Hannah were both murdered inside the
vehicle. It took us some time to put all the pieces
together; that’s how these complex cases work. Law
enforcement from multiple agencies did a fabulous
job working together.”
This case continues to be investigated by the
Paulding Police Department and the Sheriff’s
Office. If anyone has information in regards to this
case, please contact the police department or the
sheriff’s office.
“There is still no evidence which links this case
to the Wilma Schwartz case from March 14. Our
investigations on these two cases indicate they were
isolated incidents,” Sheriff Landers said. “I am not
going to release any of the facts at this point as to
our investigations, but they are not connected.”
No further information will be released at this
time in regards to the Fischer and Tracy investigation, nor the Schwartz investigation, as both cases
continue to be investigated.

Arizona.
Robert “Bob” Geier, who
owned Geier Aluminum,
was also a member of St.
John the Evangelist Church
and Knights of Columbus
Council 1362.
After his retirement, he
loved spending time at his
home in Arizona.
His two passions in
Arizona were playing shuffleboard and attending vintage car shows.

July 31, 1930-March 22, 2016
OTTAWA — Norman
Joseph Doepker, Jr. 85, of
Ottawa died at 9:05 a.m.
Tuesday at his residence. He
was born July 31, 1930 in
Ottawa to Norman Joseph and
Matilda (Nartker) Doepker
Sr., who preceded him in
death. On June 18, 1960, he
married Lois Laudick, who
survives in Ottawa.
Also surviving are eight
children, Mary Ellen (Todd) Quatro of Monroe, Michigan,
John (Maria) Doepker of Kettering, Beth (Barry) von der
Embse of Kalida, Karen (Dave) Brucker of Springfield, Susan
(Joe) Kuhlman of Ottawa, Kathy (Keith) Wischmeyer of Lake
Orion, Michigan, Scot (Frédérique) Doepker of Washington
Township and Anne (Chris) Ryan of Gahanna; 27 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four sisters: Patricia Macke of
Ottawa, Ruth (Donald) Tesmond of Chicago, Marilyn Weber
of Ottawa and Molly Weisgerber of Columbus; a brother-inlaw, Richard (Jeanette) Laudick Jr. of Ottawa; and two sistersin-law, Anita Swary and Joan Doepker both of Ottawa.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Donald,
William and Thomas Doepker.
Norm was a 1948 graduate of Sts. Peter and Paul High
School. He was a retired department manager for Sears, Lima.
Norm was a lifelong and very active member of Sts. Peter and
Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa, where he was on the Parish
Council and School Endowment Committee. He was a member of the Ottawa Knights of Columbus and was the treasurer
and a volunteer at the Ottawa Food Pantry.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at
Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Fr. Matt Jozefiak officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Sunday at Love Funeral
Home, Ottawa where there will be a scripture service at 7:50
p.m.
Memorials may be made to Sts. Peter and Paul School.

away Tuesday at Hospice
of the Valley in Chandler,
Arizona.
His Family…. He was born
Dec. 23, 1928, in Delphos
to Paul and Sila (Robinson)
Geier, who preceded him in
death. On Sept. 2, 1950, he
married Claire (White) Geier,
who preceded him in death on
March 1, 1989. On Oct. 23,
1993, he married Mary Lou
(Fischer) Clement-Geier, who
survives in Delphos.
He is also survived by his family, Tom (Deb) Geier and
Mark Geier, both of Delphos, Kathy (Joe) Smithberger of
Canton, Lisa (Dave) Ebbeskotte of Fort Wayne, Mark (Chris)
Clement of Delphos and Kevin “KC” (Lynette Cardoch)
Clement of Denver, Colorado; daughter-in-law, Rene Geier
of Sidney; grandchildren, Scott (Amy) Geier, Chad (Jen)
Geier, Matt Dodds, Tim Geier, Mike Geier, Andy Geier,
Adam Smithberger, Tara Smithberger, Trey Smithberger,

car shows.
His Farewell Services.… Mass of Christian Burial will
begin at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic
Church, the Rev. Daniel Johnson officiating. Burial will follow
in Resurrection Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Monday at Weber
Funeral Home, Delphos, where a Knights of Columbus
Service will begin at 7:30 pm., followed by a Parish Wake
Service.

91, died at 9 a.m. Wednesday at
her home near Gomer.
She was born on Jan. 11,
1925, in Vaughnsville, to Willis
R. and Ruth R. (Anderson)
Dackin, who preceded her in
death.
On Jan. 22, 1950, she married Carl A. Streeter, who died
on Jan. 15, 2012.
Survivors include a son,
David (Becky) Streeter of
Gomer; three daughters, Carol
(Terry) Turner of Goshen, Diane (Vincent) Campbell of Atlanta,
Georgia, and Linda Nichols (Kim DeVita) of Gomer; 11 grandchildren, Stephanie (Darian Thompson) Turner, Todd (Molly
Fogelman) Turner, Kevin (Katie Borovich) Turner, Nate Turner;
Abigail (Ruzbeh Nemat) Tate, Angela Tate, Nick Tate, Tony
(Jarrah Cole) Streeter, Jennifer Nichols, Natasha (JJ Johnson)
DeVita and Crystal DeVita; two great-grandchildren, Aaron Hinds
and Harper Goldschmidt; a brother: Gerald Dackin of Richmond,
Virginia; and a sister-in-law, Nola Streeter of Hillsboro.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jessica Nichols;
a brother-in-law, Ed Streeter; and a sister-in-law, Marjorie Dackin.
Mrs. Streeter was a 1943 graduate of Columbus Grove High
School. She earned her R.N. degree from Lima Memorial School
of Nursing. June had worked at Lima Memorial Hospital, did
Private duty care in Arizona and she retired from the Columbia
Nursing Home, Lima, all while being a homemaker and a
farmer’s wife. She was a member of the Gomer Congregational
Church, where she had been Financial Secretary for many years
and a member of the FIDELIS, a ladies organization with the
church.
She enjoyed playing cards, bowling, traveling and attending
school and sporting events of all the grandchildren.
June liked to mow, take care of her garden and flowers, but her
real joy was her family and the times she spent with them.
Services will begin at 1 p.m. on Monday at the Gomer
Congregational Church, with Pastor Brian Knoderer officiating.
Burial will follow in Pike Run Cemetery, Gomer.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today and Sunday at Hartman
Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove, and from noon to 1 p.m.
on Monday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Gomer
Congregational Church.

L. Lozano, 89, of Delphos
passed away on Fridayat
St. Rita’s Medical Center in
Lima, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born May 4,
1926, in Ottoville to Charles
and Catherine (Looser) Leis,
who preceded her in death.
On Feb. 19, 1955, she was
united in marriage to Ramiro
Lozano; he preceded her in
death on Dec. 28, 2010.
She is survived by three
sons, Charles Lozano of
Delphos, Tony (Pam) Lozano
of Delphos and Daniel (Diane)
Lozano of Leipsic; one
daughter, Barbara (Dennis)
Hesseling of Delphos; grandchildren, Dustin (Taylor),
Kory (Alyssa) and Reed
Hesseling

Kelsey
Lozano; step-grandchildren,
Jackie Hiegel, Tasha Gerken
and Justin Kruse; and sisterin-law, Alice Leis.

92, of Delphos passed
away on Friday at Vancrest
Healthcare
Center
of
Delphos.
She was born November
28, 1923, in Steuben County,
Indiana, to Sam and Mable
(Emerson) Greeno, who
preceded her in death. She
was united in marriage to
Chester Ott, who preceded
her in death in 1999.
She is survived by a son,
Walter (Arleen) Ott of Jacksonville, Florida; son-in-law,
Stephen Seffernick of Delphos; daughter-in-law, Jeanne
Ott of Fort Wayne; four grandchildren, Tracy Bontempo,
John Ott, Mark (Tina) Seffernick and David (Ruby)
Seffernick; one great-granddaughter, Courtney Duer; one
great-greatgrandson, John Boyd; and a special canine
friend, Kandy.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Steven Ott;
daughter, Linda Seffernick; and a great-grandson, Robbie
Seffernick.
Jean was a homemaker and she loved reading and
walking, but most of all she loved spending time with her
family.
Funeral services will begin at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at
Harter and Schier Funeral Home, the Rev. David Howell
officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Vancrest
Healthcare Center of Delphos.

DELPHOS — On March
18, officers were sent to the
1600 block of Gressel Drive
to investigate a possible theft
from a business. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the
complainant and found that a
previous employee had taken
items from the business. The
incident remains under investigation to determine if this
incident is in fact a Theft or a
Civil issue.
On March 18, officers
were dispatched to the 200
block of West Clime Street in
reference to a burglary complaint. Officers met with the
complainant at his residence
and found that an ex-roommate/family member had
moved out and took some
items belonging to the complainant. Officers advised the
complainant that this is a civil
issue and he would have to
file a complaint in civil court.

things in the ground. It might be Easter, but
it’s a little early — that ground is pretty cold
yet. The farmers are getting machinery oiled
up and ready to go, and some readers have
even mowed lawn already. Hooray for Spring!
Garage sale season is also gearing
up. That means several things: remember that you can
donate unsold items
to the Thrift Shop;
remember that you
must remove your
price tags; remember to bubble wrap
any
breakables;
remember that if the
ROSTORFER
drop-off window is
full, you cannot leave
any boxes or bags on
the sidewalk whereby the items will become
subject to the weather; and furthermore, it’s
against the law to block the walks. Feel free
to call 419-692-2942 to make arrangements
for a drop-off time — we can even help you
unload! Remember the Thrift Shop cannot
take furniture, microwaves or televisions.
We are so very glad for your donations of
gently used items. It is through your generosity that we can continue our mission to help
those in need so remember us when you gear
up to tackle the spring cleaning jobs. Don’t
throw it out — somebody will be tickled that
they could find just what they were looking
for here at the shop.
Something we are always in need of is

Time enough: Signs of spring
and a new baby ‘Lovina!’

Our time changed to what
we call “fast time” on Sunday.
I do not like the changing of
clocks back and forth. I wish
it would stay one way or the
other.
My husband Joe tilled one
of our gardens on Saturday.
He is getting spring fever and
is eager to get some potatoes
planted. I on the other hand
think we have enough time
yet. Joe and sons Benjamin,
16, Joseph, 13, and Kevin,
10, have the yard raked and
it’s ready to be rolled. We
had a big truck get stuck in
our yard. He thought he could
drive through it and it was
already too soft so it needs
some straightening out.
I noticed the dandelion
greens are peeping through
enough where I think I can get
enough for a dandelion salad.
We like to put this salad on
top of steamed potatoes with
bacon or fresh ham. Not all
of our children will eat dandelion greens. Rhubarbs are
peeping through—all signs of
spring around us.
Mose (daughter Susan’s
friend) has pulled the taps
from the maple trees. Maple
syrup cooking is now over
with for another year. The
maple syrup has a really good
flavor this year. I tried eating
it on ice cream for the first
time. They were telling me
how good it is and I just
didn’t think it would be that
good. I really did like it.
Saturday morning I had
a voicemail from nephew
Joe Coblentz. This is brother
Albert’s son. He wanted to let
me know that he and Amanda
had their third child Friday
evening, a little girl they
named Lovina! So now their
daughter has the same name
as I did until I married Joe:
Lovina Coblentz. Nephew
Joe laughed and said, “Now
it’s going to cost you.” It
looks like I better get sew-

ing and make something special for this sweet little baby
that shares my name. Joe and
Amanda have three children

Wheat is turning green;
three weeks earlier than the
past two years but closer to
normal. Green-up stage in
wheat is when the new growth
of spring has covered the
dead tissue from winter giving the field a solid green
color – thus, growing plants.
Greening wheat will eventually need nitrogen fertilizer to
grow properly and to produce
optimal yields. “When is the
best time to topdress wheat
with nitrogen?” is a common
question followed by “When
does the crop need nitrogen?”
Wheat does not require large
amounts of nitrogen until stem
elongation or jointing,
Jointing is the word farmers use to describe a node, an
area on the stem that looks
swollen and darker green than
the rest of the stem. Leaves
and other organs develop from
nodes. The first visible node is
an indicator that the growing
point has been pushed above
the soil surface. Eventually
four nodes with a leaf will
appear on the elongating stem.
The growing point with the
future grain tissue will be
above the highest node.
Agronomists use the Feekes
scale to record the growth
and development of wheat. A
wheat plant has reached Feekes
Growth Stage 6 rather than
jointing when the first node is
visible above the ground. The
first node generally becomes
visible the end of April for
northwestern Ohio but may
be several weeks earlier this
year. OSU research has shown
no yield benefit from nitrogen
applications made prior to jointing. Soil organic matter and/

or nitrogen applied at planting
generally provides sufficient
nitrogen for early growth.
Nitrogen applied prior to
jointing has the potential to
be lost and unavailable for the
crop. Nitrogen source will also
affect the potential for loss.
Urea-ammonium nitrate (28%
nitrogen solution) has the greatest potential for loss, ammonium sulfate the least, and urea
would be somewhere between
the two other sources. Farmers
do not want to lose their nitrogen investment or contribute to
the nutrient load of Lake Erie,
so application time is important. OSU research has shown
that yield losses may occur
from nitrogen applied prior to
green-up regardless of the nitrogen source.
The level of loss depends
on the year (losses would be
smaller if the ground is not
frozen or snow/ice covered).
The research did not observe
any yield increase from applications made prior to green-up
for any of the three years of
the study compared to greenup or Feekes Growth Stage 6
applications. Wet weather may
prevent application of nitrogen at jointing. OSU research
has shown a yield decrease
may occur when nitrogen
application is delayed until
the early boot stage, when the
wheat grain head just begins
to emerge from the stem. A
practical compromise is to
topdress nitrogen any time
fields are suitable for application after green-up to jointing.
There is a potential for loss
even at green-up applications,

so a producer may want to use
a nitrogen source that has a
lower potential for loss such
as urea or ammonium sulfate.
ESN, a polymer-coated
urea, would be another option
but it needs to be blended with
urea or ammonium sulfate to
insure enough nitrogen will be
released for the crop during
the critical uptake stages. This
product is less prone to nitrogen loss from leaching out
of the root zone or ammonia
volatilization, but it is more
expensive. The source of nitrogen becomes less important as
the application date approaches jointing. The percentage of
urea and/or ammonium sulfate
would need to be increased
with ESN for application times
closer to this time.
Farmers may split apply
spring nitrogen to reduce
the risk of nitrogen loss and
improve nitrogen efficiency.
OSU research has not shown a
yield increase from this practice and the two applications
would increase input costs. In
a split system, the first application should be applied no
sooner than green-up. A smaller rate should be applied with
the first application since little
is needed by the crop at that
time and the larger rate applied
closer to jointing. Farmers will
be watching their wheat closely this spring; the warmer temperatures may cause jointing
to occur several weeks earlier
than normal. Farmers will be
actively topdressing nitrogen
on wheat the next several

Don’t be surprised if these delicious
dishes disappear fast!
Ham Loaf
1-1/2 pounds cured ham, ground
1-1/2 pounds fresh pork, ground
1-1/2 cups fine cracker crumbs
1/4 teaspoon pepper
3 eggs, well beaten
1-1/2 cups milk
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1/4 cup vinegar
Combine meat, crumbs, pepper, eggs and
milk. Mix thoroughly. Shape into a loaf and
place in a baking dish. Mix sugar, mustard
and vinegar together and pour over the
meat. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Baste
2-3 times. Serve with Horseradish Sauce.
Horseradish Sauce
1/2 cup whipped cream

3 tablespoons drained horseradish
1/2 teaspoon salt
Strawberry Cream Pie
1 9-inch baked pie shell
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon almond extract
Fresh strawberries
Strawberry jam
In bowl of electric mixer, blend cream
cheese with next 3 ingredients. Spread mixture in pie shell. Hull fresh strawberries and
place upside down in circular pattern on top of
cream cheese. Warm jam just enough to melt
it; brush over strawberries and chill. Serves 8.

ODA seeks to recognize farm
families leading in
conservation and productivity

REYNOLDSBURG — The Ohio
Department of Agriculture (ODA) is accepting nominations to honor Ohio farm families
who are leaders in conservation for the 2016
Conservation Farm Family Awards.
“Many Ohio farmers are committed to
conservation, and we want to honor them for
efforts they have made to protect Ohio’s natural resources,” said ODA Director David T.
Daniels. “With these awards, ODA is able to
recognize farmers who have taken extra steps
toward protecting the land using conservation
practices they have implemented on their own
farms.”
The Conservation Farm Family Award
program has recognized Ohio farm families
since 1984 for their efforts in managing
natural and human resources while meeting both production and conservation goals.
Individual farmers, partnerships or family
farm corporations are eligible for nomination, provided a substantial portion of their
income is derived from farming. The judging
is based on the nominee’s use of new and
traditional conservation techniques, comprehensive management, individual initiative

in applying conservation measures and the
nominee’s willingness to share conservation information, experiences and philosophy
with others.
Five area finalists will be selected from
across the state and will be recognized at the
annual Farm Science Review in September.
They will also receive a $400 award, courtesy of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, and
be featured in the September issue of Ohio
Farmer Magazine.

local county soil and water conservation
districts or by visiting ODA’s website at

BASEBALL
ELIDA — Todd Grapner begins his fifth year at the helm of the Elida
varsity baseball program with a 34-70 mark.
He hopes to improve upon last spring’s 8-16 record with six returning
starters and one more letterman.
Leading the Bulldog returning starters are seniors in second-team
all-Western Buckeye League performer Austin Morrison (senior, outfield/
pitcher), Josh Bull (infield/outfield/pitcher), Logan Alexander (catcher/
pitcher) and infielder Derek Snider, junior Owen Anderson (outfield/
pitcher) and sophomore infielder/pitcher Cade Parker.
Senior Dylan Holcomb (infield/pitcher) also brings experience nd is
projected to step into the starting lineup.
Gone from a season ago are Adam Purdy, Travis Watkins, Jared
Blymyer and Garrett Brinkman.
There is a handful-plus of promising newcomers: senior infielder
Tristan Edwards, juniors Ryan Cook (infield/outfield/pitcher), infielder
Scott McDonnell and catcher Brady Gibson, sophomore Riley Bartels
(outfield/pitcher) and freshmen TJ Whipple (infield/pitcher) and Noah
Adcock (infield).
The final member of the roster has sophomore Cody Gay (outfielder/
catcher).
“One thing we have is good depth. Another is outfield experience and
we also have good team speed,” Grapner assessed. We have two glaring
weaknesses: inexperience in the infield and depth of the pitching staff.
“We return six starters but only three pitchers with varsity experience.
Pitching, the ability to make plays defensively and using our speed offensively will be vital to our success this season. Our young guys are going
to need to step into starting roles and produce right away. Our pitching
staff has to do a better job of throwing strikes and giving our defense a
chance to make plays.”
Assisting Grapner in coaching duties are Randy Prince and Corey
Finch.
“As always, the Western Buckeye League will be extremely competitive,” Grapner added. “We will have to play our best night in and night
out to finish in the top half of the league. Look for Defiance, Van Wert and
Celina to finish at the top of the league.”

FAST-PITCH SOFTBALL
ELIDA — Lou Seddlemeyer has coached fast-pitch softball before,
compiling a 176-69 record in 12 years.
That made him a good choice to replace Mike Eilerman as the head
coach at Elida after the latter stepped down after six seasons.
Five starters return for the Lady Bulldogs: 2-time first-team all-Western Buckeye League senior pitcher Michaela Black, senior Skylar Hurst
(third baseman) and juniors Katelynn Sumption (first baseman), outfielder
Lydia Burnett and second sacker Kelsey Goodman.
There were several departures from last season’s Lady ‘Dawgs: 4-year
player and 2-time all-WBL performer Sabrina Kline (shortstop), 4-year
player Taylor Thompson (outfielder), catcher Jenna Halpern, Cathy Jenks
(3 years; outfielder/first baseman), second-team all-WBL Kylee Makin
and Abby Fromm (infielder/outfielder).
“We return good pitching and we have outstanding team chemistry and
work ethics. We are inexperienced in many positions,” Seddlemeyer said.
Promising newcomers expected to step into the starting lineup or provide depth off the bench are senior catcher Cheyanne Elsea, juniors outfielder/pitcher Maddie Murphy, outfielder Lauren Alexander and outfielder/catcher Jordan Brocklehurst and sophomore shortstop Lauren Kesler.

ELIDA — F. Kevin Bowers has put in many years as a coach — at
various levels and in varsity sports — in the Elida school system.
He begins his 17th year at the helm of the boys track and field program
and brings 18 lettermen back from a season ago.
He is trying to instill messages for his boys to take not only into sports
but into life.
“The Strength Of The Pack Is In The DAW; The Strength Of The
DAWG Is In The PACK!,” he explained. “Your Body Can Stand Almost
Anything; It’s Your Mind That You Have to Convince!”
Leading the way in trying to live those mottoes out are returning State
Placers in senior Gaerid Littler, senior Brian Upshaw and junior Sam
Quaintance, all part of a 6th-place 4x400-meter relay.
Also back are seniors Eric Anthony, Noah Dry and Marcus Whitt;
juniors Matt Hesseling, Aidan Kruse, Cameron Linton, Gabe Makin,
Malik Morris, Austin Selvaggio, Baylen Stinson and De’Angelo Woods;
and sophomores Xavier Gilkey, Cole Harmon, Noah Paris and Evian
Torres.
Lost to graduation was last season’s Most Valuable performer and
4-year letterman Clark Etzler (2-time State Placer in the 4x4 relay in 2013
and 2015/ 3-time school record-holder).
Looking to step in are promising newcomers in junior Daulton Buetner
and freshmen Corbin Fingerle and Jon Stotts.
“Our overall assessment of this season is to finish top five in the
Western Buckeye League, advance several to the District, Regional and
State Meet and place.
“We want to compete in all the meets that we attend and do our very
best and keep improving daily. I tell them to make every step count, be
the best that they can be.”

up the Elida girls track and field program for the last three of seasons.
She chose to step down in the off-season.
In steps new coach Andy Etzkorn.
He brings back 10 letterwinners for his first season for the Lady
Bulldogs.
One of the more decorated veterans is senior pole vaulter Tori Bowen
(sprints), who finished fourth in the State Division II event in 2015 and
12th in 2014.
Also back are seniors Keely Kipp (sprints), Aly Turrentine (distance), Bailee Kuhn (shot put/discus), Hannah Malone (sprints/hurdles),
Megan Tracy (sprints) and X’Zation Woods (shot/disc); and sophomores
Jacqueline Nichols (sprints/hurdles), Aubrey Etzler (sprints) and Dakota
Roberts (sprints/high jump).
Promising newcomers include sophomore Jessica Siefker (sprints/
hurdles/high jump) and freshmen Grace Earl (pole vault/distance), Sarah
Hawkins (sprints), Jency Jenkins (sprints), Baylie Moening (sprints/hurdles) and Jasmine Pinn (sprints).
Gone due to graduation are Brett Pauff and Aubrey Williams.
“We hope to be a well-rounded team with competitive athletes in all
sprints, distances and field events. Our goal is to work hard enough to get
the most out of our abilities,” Etzkorn said. “We are hosting the Western
Buckeye League meet and we’d like to have a good showing for our community with our effort, sportsmanship and results.”

ELIDA — Jason Selhorst is the new head coach of the boys tennis
program at Elida High School.
He has his work cut out for him after last spring’s 3-14 season.
However, six returning starters should help ease the transition.
They include seniors Noah Kendall, Ian Klaus and Alex Yonut, junior
Andrew Line ,junior Drew Sarno and sophomore Sebastian Kunkleman.
The seventh starter is expected to come from promising newcomers
senior Tony Savage and sophomore Jared Ramirez.
“With six returning lettermen, we are more experienced this year and
are looking to make great strides from last season,” Selhorst observed.
“Our strengths are our seniors who are providing leadership and stability
to the program. We hope to be competitive in every match this year with
our ultimate goal of winning a Western Buckeye League championship
and advancing players as far as possible in the State tournament.”
The rest of the varsity roster, as well as possible JV players, has senior
Dalton Reichert, sophomores Koby Smith, Kobe Christoff, Evan Yonut
and Nathon Smith and freshman Dylan Kendall.

Everybody knows Tolan attends 100-year event

They said goodbye to
everything familiar and set
off toward the unknown in
search of a better life. On
4 March 1848 the Barque
“Johann Friedrick”, captained by Master H. Wieting,
left the port of Bremen with
125 passengers, including
Anton Potthast, age 27, his
wife Anna Cath., 20, and
their daughter, Maria, listed as 6 months, along with
merchandise for Rodoval &
Brothers

Germany, the daughter of
Johannes Christian and Anna
Maria Catharina (Gröne)

On 20 April 1847,
Johannes Antonius Potthast, a
farm worker in Brenkhausen,
and Agnes Anna Katharina
Struik were married in
Saint Mary’s Cathedral,
Marienmunster, NordrheinWestfalen, Germany.
Two days later, their
daughter, Maria Potthast,
was born at 2 p.m. on 22
April 1847 and baptized in
Marienmuenster on 25 April
1847. Less then a year later,
taking only the bare necessities the Anton Potthast family
headed to the port of Bremen.
Here they endured various
physical exams to ensure a
certain level of health before
embarking on the trip across
the ocean.. For 58 days the
voyage stretched on for what
seemed like an eternity with
many trials including seasickness, inadequate food,

lack of privacy, cramped living quarters, spreading illnesses and death.

couldn’t leave their child
alone in such a vast loneliness but they had to because
25 days into their voyage
tragedy struck. On 29 March
1848 their daughter, Maria,
died and was buried at sea.
The Barque “Johann
Friedrick” arrived in the port
of New York on 1 May 1848.
The immigrants walked
down the plank from the
ship’s swaying deck and
stepped onto the damp
quayside. Anton and Anna
Catherine Potthast would
leave New York and journey to Dayton, possibly by

the Erie Canal to Buffalo,
by lake to Cleveland, thence
by Ohio and Erie Canal to
the Dayton Miami Canal and
up to Dayton. They lived
in Dayton, where six children were born to them,
until 1864, when they came
to Marion township, Allen
county and homesteaded on
Southworth Road.

D.H. Tolan, of Lima, former publisher of the Delphos
Daily Herald, attended the
centennial celebration, held
at Carrolton, Ohio, recently
and the Free Press Standard
of that city, gave him flattering mention.
They said, regarding Mr.
Tolan:
“David Tolan, Lima,
arrived here Saturday night
for the centennial, and has
since been busy greeting his
old friends and exchanging
antebellum reminiscences.
In the earlier days he was
a printer. He entered the
Picayune office in 1852 as a
devil. It was then edited by
Fielding Cable, whose father,
Joseph Cable, represented
this district in congress.
“Mr. Tolan continued at
the trade and worked on the
Democrat, which was published by George Barlow for
some time. In addition to
‘sticking’ type he reported
the local doings and wrote
an occasional editorial. At
the outbreak of the civil war,
when feelings ran high, the
publisher was accused of
utterances smacking with
disloyalty. A company of
soldiers, which was here at
the time, invaded the printing office in search of Mr.
Barlow, who rushed out of

Mammoth Locomotives
Three mammoth passenger locomotives weighing
157 tons each, consigned
to the Missouri, Kansas
and Texas railroad from
the American Locomotive
Works, Schenectady, W.Y. are
tied up in the Delphos Clover
Leaf yards as the result of the
soft conditions of the roadbed
from Edwardsville, Ill., to St.
Louis.
The moguls arrived here
Sunday morning in charge of
D.C. Cain, a messenger for
the Schenectady concern. Mr.
Cain is waiting for a message
from General Superintendent
Hinkle telling him that the
locomotives journey to St.
Louis can be continued.
The engines are of the
Pacific type, and are a lot of
42, made for the M.K. & T.
by the American Locomotive
Works. The lot consists of 35
freight engines and 7 passenger engines. Three passenger engines consigned to the
western road preceded Mr.
Cain, and are now being held
at Decatur, Ind.
The engines tied up here
have driving wheels measuring six feet in diameter.
The cylinders are 25 inches
wide and 28 inches long. The
cabs are provided with electric lights and all the latest
equipment.

households this week in preparation
for the start of curbside recycling.
Curbside recycling will begin April
1. The curbside recycling program
is the result of House Bill 592
adopted by the General Assembly
in 1988. The bill mandates a 25percent reduction in waste through
recycling by 1994.
Nationwide Insurance agents
Jerry Gilden and Cliff Roby have
volunteered to help Fort Jennings
and St. John’s High School students
conduct and try to win the 1991
Prom Promise Program. Meeting
with Gilden were Fort Jennings students Leslie Gasser, Laura Maenle,
Stephanie Vetter and Jennifer
Gasser. Agents will help students
coordinate Prom Promise events,
answer questions about the program
and help their schools compete.
A special meeting of the Tau
Chapter of the Alpha Delta Omega

Ed Mox will be in charge of recruiting the nursing staff.
Fort Jennings Busy J’s 4-H Club
held its fifth meeting recently with
demonstrations on posture being

A Ton of Gold Certificate
has been awarded a registered
Jersey cow owned by Rolland H.
Blockberger of Delphos. This award
is for cows producing 2,000 pounds
of fat or more during four or less
consecutive lactations on official
test. The award went to the cow,
O J O Advancer Fillpail Sandy,
which produced 2,217 lbs. butterfat—more than a ton—from 37,630
pounds of milk.
60 Years Ago – 1956
A veteran Delphos railroader
was one of a number of men honored last week by the Brotherhood
of Railroad Trainmen at a session
in Cleveland. Charles S. Brubaker
was presented a 40-year pin by the
BRT. He has been a trainman for
the AC&Y Railroad for the past 45
years. Brubaker started his railroad
career here late in 1910 at the age of
20. After being with the company a
short time, he was promoted to conductor, the job he holds today.
Plans for the fourth annual Teenage-Road-E-O in Delphos were
announced Monday by officials
of the local Junior Chamber of
Commerce, the sponsoring organization. The youthful driver contest
will be held April 29, with about 35
teenagers from Delphos, Ottoville
and Fort Jennings communities par-

ticipating. Members of the local
Jaycee Road-E-O committee are
Elmer Helmkamp, Jim Wiltsie, Carl
Suever and Ted Hanf.
75 Years Ago – 1941
Fine progress is being made in
the construction of the new bowling
alleys in the building at the corner
of Third and Canal streets recently
purchased by Louis Rimer. The six
new alleys are being put into place
by bowling alley mechanics from
the Brunswick factory in Chicago.
The work of remodeling the interior
of the building is also going ahead.
Approximately 50 people from
Delphos Jefferson attended a meeting Tuesday afternoon to discuss
the possibility of baseball for the
spring season. Coach Jack Palmer
stated that he has not as yet had an
opportunity to survey the material
available but hopes to have line
on the prospective players by next
week. All of the baseball equipment
used in former years is still available at Jefferson and the game could
be inaugurated, after a several years
layoff, will little cost.
Members of the Delphos
Kiwanis Club met in regular session
Tuesday evening at the Beckman
Hotel. The official National League
baseball picture was shown at that
time and was greatly enjoyed by all
present. Two delegates were named
from the Delphos club to attend
the annual convention of Kiwanis
International which will be held at
Atlanta during the coming summer.
Those named are H. L. Leilich and
Robert McDonald.

That
Ringo!

Egg-coloring is a lost art,
best shared with chocolate

Other Hand

This is a shout out to all those teachers who were
ever told, “My dog ate my homework” by a student.
Little Ringo has a habit of slinking into the
bathroom and pulling a tissue out of the trash can
and shredding it right in front of the bathroom door.
He does this when he feels he is not getting enough
attention. Before you feel all sorry for him, let me
assure you he is not lacking attention.
He is constantly being talked to and petted and
played with. He’s spoiled rotten. We spend a lot of
time with him.
As a consequence, he is quite attached to us. He
follows us around the house regardless of what we
are doing. He escorts us to the kitchen to get a drink
or snack. He escorts us back to the living room or
bedroom. He escorts us to the bathroom. We are
covered in the escort department and rarely do anything by ourselves. He even comes out and has his
supper while we eat ours.
This is leading up to something, I promise.
Earlier this week, my husband handed me a $20
bill for something and I just tossed it aside thinking I
would slip it into my wallet later. I forgot about it and
then I jumped in the shower to get my day started.
I showered and dressed and then did my hair. I
walked through the living room on my way to the
living room and there on the floor right in front of
my chair was my $20 bill. It was ripped in half and
about six little pieces torn off each half. It was all
there but it would never be the same.
I scooped up the slightly damp pieces, taped
them together and put it in a baggie and put a visit to
the bank on my list of errands.
I also got a lecture from my husband about leaving stuff lay around. I know, I know. It was my fault.
It still doesn’t make me believe that he didn’t have a
choice of whether he mutilated my money. He was

being a little brat.
Nonetheless, we were best friends before I left
the house and he continued to get snuzzles and
smoochies. Lesson learned — for me. He learned
nothing. He got to tear up my money and still got
my affection. Sheesh.
The bank teller laughed at my poor, mauled $20
bill and gave me a new one.
So while the story had a happy ending, my dog
ate my $20 bill. I have no doubt that if it had been
homework, he would have eaten that, too.
—I am a little taken aback by the recent developments here and abroad. Terror attacks are becoming
so frequent they will soon seem the like norm. It
seems they know just where to find everyone after
but have no clue what these guys are doing before
even though they know they are a threat. They are
on lists. Their faces are passed around in briefings
and still they roam free to kill and maim. It’s the
same story every time. Someone knew and passed it
along and then it got lost in the shuffle or someone
knew and neglected to pass it on and it got lost in the
shuffle. How many times are we going to do this?
One more thing. If I have to listen to Trump and
Cruz any more, I’m going to lose it. What is happening during this pre-election season? These people are
crazy. I don’t want any of these psychos in the White
House or anywhere else they have access to any kind
of power that affects me. This crop of presidential
candidates is laughable at best. I am so embarrassed
by what they throw out there for public consumption. Other countries must think we are nuts.
I’ve heard quite a few people say they have plans
to cross the border up north after this election. I’m
hoping they’ll consider letting me come along — or
at least let me visit.

My child was born on Easter. Although
the actual date of her entry into this world
has only coincided with the Easter observance once since birth, it’s still pretty cool
when she is able to come home to eat
chocolate rabbits, ears first.
We also color eggs, or I do, anyway.
Even though retailers still display dyes—
everything from classic PAAS tablets that
fizz when dropped in vinegar-water combos to gel packets and water-soluble crayons — it seems adults get more excited
about coloring eggs than their children
and grandchildren. I visited with one of
my closest college friends last weekend.
She was in the area visiting and had spent
much of Friday coloring eggs with her
small nephews. She and her daughter, a
recent college graduate, showed off each
egg, noting the colors and patterns formed
by shell thickness and mineral deposits.
The boys played Minecraft in the next
room.
Maybe the grown-up penchant for
pre-Easter egg art is because many of
us remember physically dyeing eggs on
Saturday night, dropping eggs in cupfuls
of food coloring with that ineffectual wire
dipper, then tossing the worthless wire
loop to lift the eggs out with multi-colored
fingers. We remember dying at least one
egg in the solid shade contained in each
cup, then attempting two- and three-toned
eggs.
My Gran had some beautiful bottle
green glass cups that she would fill with
cold water and vinegar on Easter Eve. My
cousins, uncles and I fought over the white
crayon, marking our own eggs by name
before dunking them in pure dye baths
before they were so mixed that there was
only one color option. These “ugly” eggs

until it becomes clear who will
win the November elections. If
it appears a Republican will be
elected president, the Republicancontrolled Senate will stall the
Obama nominee and wait until the
new Republican president takes
office and nominates a conservative
justice.
If it appears a Democrat will
win, mostly likely Hillary Clinton,
the Senate may consider Obama’s
nominee to be the safer bet and
then expedite the process during
the lame-duck session. Of course,
Obama could withdraw his nominee and let Clinton nominate a
more-liberal judge for confirmation.
Several weeks ago, President
Obama
nominated
Merrick
Garland, 63, to fill the seat on the
bench vacated by the recent death
of conservative Justice Antonin
Scalia. Garland has excellent credentials. He has been on the U.S.
Court of Appeals for the District of
Columbia for 19 years, and serves
as the chief judge.
When he was confirmed by the
Senate in 1997, the vote was 76-23
with 22 Republicans supporting
him.
Most Republican leaders,
including Senate Majority Leader
Mitch McConnell and Judiciary
Committee chairman Sen. Chuck

Grassley, have said they will not
allow the nomination of Garland to
get a hearing. They believe a Justice
Garland would be very bad for conservative causes.
McConnell
keeps
saying
American voters should have a say
in which president makes the nomination. One national poll dispels
this notion. Sixty-three percent said
the Senate should hold hearings on
Garland. This obstructionism by the
GOP is not popular with voters and
it could even hurt the Republican
candidates up for re-election. They
run the risk of losing control of the
Senate.
Alberto
Gonzales,
former U.S. Attorney General in
the Bush Administration, says
the Constitution does not give
Americans the power to choose
Supreme Court nominees. That is a
duty of the president, along with the
advice and consent of the Senate.
“Leaving the decision up to the
voters is a bad idea,” Gonzales
said recently, “they are usually the
most uninformed on these matters
and may vote based on emotion or
solely based on single hot-button
issues.”
This is just another example of
political gamesmanship and hypocrisy in Washington that we’ve come
to despise.

Protecting Ohioans’ paychecks

American workers know
they’re working more than
ever before, for less pay.
They don’t think they can
get by – much less get ahead
– even if they work hard.
And too often, they’re
right that the deck is stacked
against them. Across our
country and our state, too
many workers are putting
in long hours for an honest
day’s pay, only to have their
employers cheat them out of
the paycheck they’ve earned.
While most employers
treat their workers fairly,
there are still far too many
who force employees to
work off the clock, refuse
to pay them minimum wage,
steal their tips, or deny them
overtime pay. Another trick
employers pull to avoid pay-

ing fair wages and benefits is
misclassifying workers – for
example, a food service contracting company might call
a “cook” a “dishwasher,”
to avoid paying the higher
cook’s salary.
And we know that workers in low-wage industries
like food service, childcare,
and retail service are at the
greatest risk.
The National Employment
Law Project surveyed lowwage workers in three cities
across the country, and found
that 26 percent of workers
surveyed were paid less than
minimum wage the previous week, and 76 percent
of those who had worked
more than 40 hours were
not paid the legally-required
overtime. And when workers
file a complaint, they often
face harsh retaliation from
employers. Most workers

who are being taken advantage of don’t speak up, for
fear of having their hours cut
or being fired.
These Americans are
working long hours at
demanding jobs to support
their families. We should be
encouraging work and making sure that work pays off
– not letting employers get
away with cheating Ohioans
out of the paycheck they’ve
earned.
That’s why, along with
Senator Murray, I’m introducing the Wage Theft
Prevention and Recovery
Act, to crack down on this
wage theft.
The bill would create new
civil penalties for employers
who engage in wage theft,
and give workers the right
to receive full back pay for
the wages that were stolen. Right now, even when

we’ll all eat them with jewel-toned fingertips. Although it won’t be her birthday, my
child will get the rabbit’s ears for Easter,
as it should be.

More political folly, hypocrisy
Just what we need during this
highly-charged, contentious presidential election season—-a conservative Supreme Court justice being
replaced by a lame-duck liberal
president who can flip the balance
of the court from 5-4 conservative
to a 5-4 liberal-controlled court.
Throw in the fact we have legal
scholars and partisan politicians trying to defend their positions arguing
what the Constitution-writers meant
to say over 230 years ago. Most
Americans have very little faith in
trusting these expert interpretations.
It’s all politics.
The strategic games have begun.
In a sense, the GOP may believe it
has already won. They got President
Barack Obama to fulfill his duties
by nominating a moderate-liberal
judge who is well-respected and
well-qualified. But nothing is what
it seems in big-time politics.
The idea of stacking the highest
court in the land by either party
seems to be a bad thing for most
reasonable Americans who just
want a Supreme Court that can
independently hear difficult cases
and make decisions based on
Constitutional Law, and common
sense.
Most people think the GOP will
delay confirmation hearings, and
Senate action, on the nomination

People Make
the Difference

Our government is supposed to
have three separate branches, which
provides for checks and balances.
The Supreme Court should have
nine moderate judges, not a stacked
court with advocates on the left and
on the right. We would be better
served with even-handed, thoughtful and consensus building judges.
With so many 5-4 court rulings,
we are left to wonder what’s right.
And, we know the decisions can
be overturned just by flipping one
new judge.
America, Congress and the Court
will continue to be divided for
decades to come if someone doesn’t
commit to ending the dysfunction,
partisan rancor and hypocrisy that
has degraded our political system.

If you are a true sports fan,
you’ve got to acknowledge the dominating success of the University
of Connecticut women’s basketball
program. The Huskies, coached by
Geno Auriemma, are nothing less
than amazing. UConn takes on all
comers during the regular season,
and they dominate them.
It’s one thing to be dominant for
3-4 seasons, but UConn has done
it for two decades. Since 1993,
Geno’s teams have won over 90
percent of their games. UConn is
going for its fourth straight NCAA

happens, the bill also increases the number of years workers have to bring a wage

would require employers to
provide regular paystubs, so
workers can keep track of
the pay they’ve earned, and
more easily catch potential
theft.
This is a commonsense
plan to protect workers,
boost economic security, and
ensure that work pays off for
all Americans – not just the
wealthiest few.

tot, Great Britain’s Michael “Eddie” Edwards
dreamed of becoming an
Olympic athlete. But the
odds were always stacked
against him.
Weight lifter, pole
vaulter, discus thrower,
hurdle jumper—he didn’t
care. But no amount of
backyard “training” made
any difference. With congenitally wobbly knees
bolstered by leg braces
and thick eyeglasses to
correct his terrible vision,
young Eddie was no one’s
idea of the Olympic ideal.
Though it takes a
few—or more—liberties,
Eddie the Eagle is based
on the rousing real-life
story of Edwards, who
proved all the naysayers wrong to become an

Olympic competitor, representing Great Britain in
the 1988 Winter Olympics
as a ski jumper. The movie traces his improbable
journey, against the wishes of his working-class father, who urges him to settle into a proper trade, and
England’s stuffy Olympic
committee, which thwarts
his every attempt to qualify for their team.
“Frankly,” one official
dismissively tells teenage
Eddie (Taron Edgerton),
“you will never be Olympic material—goodbye.”
Eddie counters that
curt farewell with his usual optimism, tenacity and
pluck. Nothing is going
to deter him. He sets off
on his own to a Winter
Olympics training facility, where he meets former
ski champ Bronson Peary
(Hugh Jackman), who
reluctantly,
eventually
agrees to take Eddie under
his wing.
As the stocky, bumbling, socially awkward
Eddie, Edgerton is miles—
or kilometers—away from
his best-known former
role as a stylish, slick
super-spy in Kingsman.

The children from Cleveland,
who returned to their homes
Friday, after enjoying a two
weeks outing in the homes of
residents of Delphos and vicinity, were a happy group when
they left here in the motor truck
for Continental, to board a
Nickel Plate train for the homeward trip. The children were
brought to the city building, the
truck leaving there about 1:30
o’clock. Mrs. Theo. Odenweller,
chairman of the local committee, was in charge of the children. Dana Ward took the party
to Continental in his truck.

Victoria Meadows – Paulding High
School
Meadows is the daughter of Larry and
Bernice and the sister of Josh and Josiah. She
is in the Panthers Marching Band, science
club and an Olympiad. Meadows attends
United Methodist Church of Paulding and is
a member of the 4-H club Happy Bunch. She
loves to take pictures in her spare time. After
high school, she plans to attend Huntington
University and major in mathematics education with a minor in music theory.
Brooke Ludwig – Wayne Trace High
School
Ludwig is the daughter of Eric and Sandy
Ludwig and the sister of Brittany, Holly,
Andrew and Blair. She is involved with the
Raiders Spirit Club. She also cheers for the
Celina Lakers All-Star Cheer and dances for
Kim Hohman’s Dance Works. She enjoys
working as a lifeguard. After high school, she
will attend IPFW to pursue a degree in dental
assisting.
Shelbe Eddington – Parkway High
School
Eddington is the daughter of Neil (Karen)
Eddington and Shannon (Andy) Wagner. She
also has four siblings: Chase Eddington and
Jack, Drew and Derrick Wagner. She runs
track and plays basketball for Parkway. She
is also involved with the marching and pep
bands, show choir, FTA, FFA and student
council. Outside of school, she is active with
4-H and loves spending time with her friends.
After high school, she will pursue a degree in
criminal justice
Mikayla Boesch – Antwerp High School
Boesch is the daughter of James and Laura
and sister of Madison and Morgan. She is a
3-year letter holder of cheerleading and also
runs cross country for the Archers. She is also

National Honor Society. Boesch dances at
Dance Doll Studio in Antwerp and has a job
at the Root Beer Stand. After high school, she
will attend OSU and major in nursing.
Katelyn Welch – Van Wert High School
Welch, daughter of Rob and Jacque Welch,
sister of Kyra, Kaiven, Keaten, Keiley and
Kemlynn. Katelyn is involved with several
clubs at school: Beta Club, Service Pack,
Scarlet Squad, FCA and Junior Rotarian.
Outside of school, she is active with dance
at Kim Hohman’s Dance Works and her 4-H
club the Bunny Hoppers, where she held the
office of president for four years. She also is
a teacher’s assistant at Kim Hohman’s Dance
Works and works at Northwest Ohio Trophy.
In her spare time, she loves to babysit, spend
time with her friends, siblings and all of her
family. After high school, Welch will attend
Wright State University with a focus on premed. Upon graduation with her bachelor’s
degree, she will enroll in medical school to
become an anesthesiologist.

sale through Friday afternoon. All seats are
reserved and any remaining tickets will be on
sale at the door the night of the pageant.
