Highlanders have another
highly successful weekend,
headed south on Saturday

The Glasgow Wrestling Club competed
at the Inaugural Brodie Gorder Dual
Tournament in Sidney this past weekend,
the Highlanders’ first experience at a dual
tournament.
Competing for the Highlanders were:
Tyler King, Hank Hopstad, Khye Gamas, Ted
See, Jake Kuka, Flint Dix, Connor Hudyma,
Jaydeen Hanshew, Ethan Nickles, Ethyn
Schindler, Levi Overvold, Kyler Hallock,
Grady Nielsen, Carlos Gonzales, Blake
Overvold, Kohl Kittleson, Riley Overvold,
Tavin Boland and Jackson Bishop.
The Highlanders placed 5th overall
in the LARGE team division. Khye Gamas
and Kyler Hallock both went undefeated at
5-0 for the day, and Blake Overvold won a
quick pin trophy for his 0:10 fall. Now that’s
quick!

Seventh grader Dylan Nieskens traveled
to Iowa and competed with Team Montana
against some of the nation’s BEST at the
Lee Palimuk National Dual Tournament.
Dylan did outstanding against some very
tough competition, finishing 5-3 on the
weekend. Team Montana did great, with
the help of Dylan who came away with an
All-American medal and team medal on
the weekend. Great job Dylan!
The Highlanders compete at the
Montana Open this weekend in Billings to
wrap up the Folkstyle season.

The American Health Information Management
Association (AHIMA) will honor and celebrate health
information professionals during the 27th annual Health
Information Professionals (HIP) Week April 3-9, 2016.
This year’s theme is “Accurate Information, Quality Care.”

“Increasingly, accurate and timely health information
is becoming healthcare’s greatest asset,” said AHIMA
CEO Lynne Thomas Gordon, MBA, RHIA, FACHE,
CAE, FAHIMA. “During AHIMA’s Health Information
Professionals Week, our goal is to raise awareness that
health information management professionals who are
armed with the skills to manage health information
effectively are key to the success of our health system.”
HIP Week 2016 will coincide with AHIMA’s
Leader Symposium and Hill Day, events where AHIMA
members receive education specific to advocacy and visit
Capitol Hill to share the importance of advancing HIM.
Information governance, privacy, security, and fraud
and abuse concerns continue to be key issues for HIM
professionals; AHIMA will continue to provide guidance
to the healthcare industry and government leaders
seeking expertise and counsel.

“We are already seeing HIM professionals leading the
industry in achieving data integrity through information
governance and ensuring patients and consumers have
access to timely information they can trust,” said Thomas
Gordon. “This year’s HIP Week theme reflects our
commitment to our vision of a world where the right
information is available to the right person at the right
time—for better care.”

During HIP Week, health information professionals
will engage in focused activities in their organizations
and the community to raise awareness of the important
work they perform.
Information can be used as an asset to benefit
healthcare organizations, to improve performance and
improve patient health. Achieving aims such as improving
cost, quality, and population health depends on the ability
to turn data into knowledge. With the theme of “Accurate
Information, Quality Care,” AHIMA reiterates its belief
in the necessity of building quality healthcare through
quality information.

About AHIMA — The American Health Information
Management Association (AHIMA) represents more than
103,000 health information professionals in the United
States and around the world. AHIMA is committed to
promoting and advocating for research, best practices and
effective standards in health information and to actively
contributing to the development and advancement of
health information professionals worldwide.

Glasgow grad invited to inaugurate lecture series
By Tracy Ellig, MSU News Service

A Montana State University faculty member has
been invited by the director of the National Institute
of General Medical Sciences to give the inaugural
lecture in a series encouraging undergraduates to
pursue careers in science.
Blake Wiedenheft, MSU Department of
Microbiology and Immunology assistant professor,
has been invited to lecture by Jon R. Lorsch, director
of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences,
NIGMS. Wiedenheft will deliver the lecture at the
National Institutes of Health, NIH, in Bethesda,
Maryland, on Wednesday, April 13, from 12-1 p.m.
Mountain Time. The lecture will be streamed live
on the web and available for later viewing. MSU’s
Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a
joint department of the College of Agriculture and
the College of Letters and Science.
Part of the NIH, the NIGMS manages a $2.5
billion budget supporting basic biological research
that lays the foundation for advances in disease
diagnosis, treatment and prevention. NIGMS
funding supports more than 3,000 investigators
and 4,500 research grants – over 11 percent of the
total number of research grants funded by NIH as a
whole.

“Blake is an exceptional early career scientist who
is doing cutting-edge research involving the CRISPR
gene-editing system,” said Lorsch, “In addition to
his exemplary research, he’s actively involved in
mentoring, education and outreach activities. These
qualities make him the perfect choice to give our
inaugural lecture for undergraduate students.”
Called the NIGMS Director’s Early Career
Scientist Lecture, the series is designed to put dynamic
early career scientists who are working on exciting
problems before an audience of undergraduate

School in 1993.

students followed by a moderated question-andanswer session focused on the researcher’s career,
Lorsch said.
Wiedenheft’s lecture, “Bacteria, Their Viruses,
and How They Taught Us to Perform Genome Surgery,”
will be about the use of CRISPR, a gene-editing
system named Science magazine’s “breakthrough of
the year” for 2015.
“Bacteria, like people, are infected by viruses.

abundant biological entities on earth and they have a
profound impact on microbial communities in every
ecological setting – including inside our own bodies,”
said Wiedenheft. “My career has been dedicated to
understanding how viruses infect bacteria and also
how bacteria are – in some cases – able to fend those
viruses off.”
CRISPR gene-editing technology is allowing
Wiedenheft to explore the mechanisms driving virus
infection and bacterial immunity.
“By understanding these mechanisms, we may
be able to engineer cellular machines with new
functions for applications in biotechnology and
medicine,” Wiedenheft said.

Wiedenheft will also talk about pivotal moments
in his history that led him into a life of science.

“I want students to know that it doesn’t matter
where they grew up, if they are interested in science
there are doors waiting to open for them, and
MSU is a key that will help them unlock incredible
opportunities,” Wiedenheft said.

The son of a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks
fisheries manager, Wiedenheft grew up in Fort Peck
and attended high school in Glasgow. He graduated
from Glasgow High School in 1993 and received his
Bachelor of Science in microbiology from MSU in
1998. Wiedenheft worked as a fisheries biologist in
Alaska before returning to graduate school at MSU,
where he earned his doctorate from the Department
of Microbiology and Immunology in 2006.

Wiedenheft then moved to Berkeley, California,
where he served as a Howard Hughes fellow of the Life
Sciences Research Foundation in Jennifer Doudna’s
lab at the University of California -Berkeley. In 2012,
Wiedenheft returned to MSU, joining the faculty in
MSU’s Department of Microbiology and Immunology.
Wiedenheft currently runs an NIH-funded research
program focused on understanding the mechanisms
bacteria employ to defend themselves from infection
and the counter defense strategies that viruses use to
subvert these defense systems.

Research in the Wiedenheft lab is supported by the
National Institutes of Health through the Institutional
Development Award (IDeA) Centers of Biomedical
Research Excellence (COBRE) program under grant
P20GM110732 and under grant R01GM108888;
the National Science Foundation EPSCoR (EPS110134); the M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust; a young
investigator award from Amgen; and the Montana
State University Agricultural Experimental Station.

According to a lengthy investigation from
Business of Fashion, there has been a recent surge
in ISIS-branded merchandise online. Even physical
marketplaces have been retailing the ISIS symbols
and slogans on various articles of clothing.
The branding, featuring the Shahada and the
prophet’s seal, is available on items from T-shirts
to baby onesies. In the group’s video propaganda,
subjects commonly are sporting headbands, flags and
clothing with ISIS branding, but, now, it’s becoming
more ubiquitous throughout the Middle East,
according to Business of Fashion. There’s a movement
gaining traction called “jihadi cool,” which aims to
recruit young people for the group’s violent acts of
terror.

“There is an arguable case that so-called ‘jihadi
cool,’ which might be exacerbated by these kids of
garments, may be a factor that feeds into the decisions
of younger people, in particular, to engage in terrorist
activity,” said anti-terrorism expert Fiona de Londras
of the Birmingham Law School in the U.K.
Previously, only ISIS personnel were wearing
the branded clothing, leaving a gap in the market
for everyone else. Now, it is much easier to find the
articles of clothing in the markets and on the Internet.
Seemingly, there is no link to ISIS finances, but it’s
certainly contributing to the group’s political agenda.

Certain restrictions are in place to outlaw ISISbranded clothing. Facebook has shut down pages
retailing the apparel. In the U.K., the Terrorism
Act 2000 prohibits wearing any suspicious clothing
that indicates a person is a member of or supports a
forbidden group. However, it doesn’t seem like police
will arrest someone wearing such a T-shirt.
So, if you still got a Joe Camel T-shirt, wear it
with pride, man, wear it with pride!
