COME EXPERIENCE Taizé Prayer Monday, March 14th 7:00 pm in church
What is unique to the prayer of Taizé is the adaptation of the repetitive form to simple musical lines and core biblical texts that can be sung by a whole assembly of various nationalities, languages, and denominations. The duration of repetitive songs (whether in canon form or ostinato) during prayer is not to be timed nor the number of repetitions calculated beforehand. The assembly is to immerse itself in the simple but profound harmonies and let itself be carried by this sung prayer. Silence is perhaps the second most important aspect of this particular prayer practice. In the middle of the prayer is a long period of silence (rather than a sermon or meditation). Maintaining silence is not a technique or method enabling some special communication with God. It is simply holding oneself in a presence and letting Christ, through the Holy Spirit, pray in us. There are not many short silences in a Taizé prayer rather the prayer moves along according to a certain rhythm through song, psalm and reading leading up to a longer silence (around 10 minutes) which then culminates in intercessory prayer and more song.

FROM OUR PASTOR
Today’s Gospel speaks of houses built on sand and built on rock, and it set me to wondering about what construction companies do in Florida where the soil is so sandy. Apparently sizable construction has only been possible in most of Florida since the invention of concrete, and even then the hurricanes of 2004 exposed its limitations: solid sea walls were undermined so that some coastal properties collapsed into the ocean, and now insurers will no longer take the risk of covering them. Perhaps we should also describe the collapse of the real estate market in terms of houses built on sand; the irresponsible selling of mortgages, encouraging people to go far beyond their means, inevitably led to disaster. If we are going to survive the storms of life - which come to us all - we need a firm foundation. The imposition of ashes on Wednesday will remind us that our own strength is limited: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you will return”. It’s the choice of placing our lives on the sure foundation of Jesus Christ that makes the difference. In the last few months I’ve spoken to families who have faced all the difficulties that the modern world can bring: foreclosure, loss of longheld jobs, worries about their children, sickness and death; and yet they have not given way to despair because they live close to Jesus and place their trust in Him at the beginning of each day. Lent is a privileged time for all of us to reaffirm our choice of Jesus Christ and his way, and so strengthen our attachment to the true foundation even more firmly. One of the great hymns speaks of Jesus in words which echo Psalm 118, a psalm particularly associated with Easter: “Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ the head and cornerstone” and describes him as the Church’s “help forever, and her confidence alone”. This is the season to rediscover our love for the things of God and know the confidence that comes from Him. In this bulletin you will find a special section which details all the activities of Lent, and at the back of church you can find little devotional books which will help you with private prayer. Very often, though, it’s easier to pray when we have others around to encourage us, so you might want to come to Taizé Prayer on the first Monday of Lent and simply let the haunting and prayerful chants wash over you; and I know that many of you, like me, find that the Stations of the Cross on the Fridays of Lent still have a tremendous power to move hard hearts. On those Fridays we will also come together for mutual support of a different kind at the soup suppers and fish fry. On four of the Mondays there will be the opportunity to deepen faith by learning about the history of the Mass in a series of talks which I’m calling “It’s the Mass which matters”. This will help to prepare us for the new translation of the Mass which we will begin to use in Advent of this year. There will also be several opportunities for reconciliation, that annual preparation for Easter which the Church recommends particularly strongly. May God help us all to keep a good Lent and find our lives set on firmer foundations when Easter comes.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITATION
The RCIA is a process of faith development (for anyone over the age of seven) leading to Easter sacraments - Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist – and beyond. This process is divided into stages. Seven of our young people— Damien Alaura Victoria Brooks Jose and Beatriz Miranda PintosValentina Pintos-Fan Abel Vasquez Niurca Vasquez —will move into the final stage next weekend. At the 5:00 pm Mass they will experience the Rite of Sending as our parish prayerfully sends them to the Rite of Election at the Shrine Sunday afternoon. They, along with all those of our diocese seeking initiation into the Church, will be enrolled in the Book of the Elect. Our soon to be ELECT— will spend the 40 days of LENT in prayerful preparation for full membership in the Church. This is more of a “retreat” time than study time. Please pray for them during this special time. May we be examples to them of committed Catholic Christians. Plan now to join us for their glorious celebration of Initiation at the Vigil, pm. Easter Vigil Saturday, April 23rd at 8:00 pm

COME EXPERIENCE Taizé Prayer Monday, March 14th 7:00 pm in church
What is unique to the prayer of Taizé is the adaptation of the repetitive form to simple musical lines and core biblical texts that can be sung by a whole assembly of various nationalities, languages, and denominations. The duration of repetitive songs (whether in canon form or ostinato) during prayer is not to be timed nor the number of repetitions calculated beforehand. The assembly is to immerse itself in the simple but profound harmonies and let itself be carried by this sung prayer. Silence is perhaps the second most important aspect of this particular prayer practice. In the middle of the prayer is a long period of silence (rather than a sermon or meditation). Maintaining silence is not a technique or method enabling some special communication with God. It is simply holding oneself in a presence and letting Christ, through the Holy Spirit, pray in us. There are not many short silences in a Taizé prayer rather the prayer moves along according to a certain rhythm through song, psalm and reading leading up to a longer silence (around 10 minutes) which then culminates in intercessory prayer and more song.

Today’s Gospel speaks of houses built on sand and built on rock, and it set me to wondering about what construction companies do in Florida where the soil is so sandy. Apparently sizable construction has only been possible in most of Florida since the invention of concrete, and even then the hurricanes of 2004 exposed its limitations: solid sea walls were undermined so that some coastal properties collapsed into the ocean, and now insurers will no longer take the risk of covering them. Perhaps we should also describe the collapse of the real estate market in terms of houses built on sand; the irresponsible selling of mortgages, encouraging people to go far beyond their means, inevitably led to disaster. If we are going to survive the storms of life - which come to us all - we need a firm foundation. The imposition of ashes on Wednesday will remind us that our own strength is limited: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you will return”. It’s the choice of placing our lives on the sure foundation of Jesus Christ that makes the difference. In the last few months I’ve spoken to families who have faced all the difficulties that the modern world can bring: foreclosure, loss of longheld jobs, worries about their children, sickness and death; and yet they have not given way to despair because they live close to Jesus and place their trust in Him at the beginning of each day. Lent is a privileged time for all of us to reaffirm our choice of Jesus Christ and his way, and so strengthen our attachment to the true foundation even more firmly. One of the great hymns speaks of Jesus in words which echo Psalm 118, a psalm particularly associated with Easter: “Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ the head and cornerstone” and describes him as the Church’s “help forever, and her confidence alone”. This is the season to rediscover our love for the things of God and know the confidence that comes from Him. In this bulletin you will find a special section which details all the activities of Lent, and at the back of church you can find little devotional books which will help you with private prayer. Very often, though, it’s easier to pray when we have others around to encourage us, so you might want to come to Taizé Prayer on the first Monday of Lent and simply let the haunting and prayerful chants wash over you; and I know that many of you, like me, find that the Stations of the Cross on the Fridays of Lent still have a tremendous power to move hard hearts. On those Fridays we will also come together for mutual support of a different kind at the soup suppers and fish fry. On four of the Mondays there will be the opportunity to deepen faith by learning about the history of the Mass in a series of talks which I’m calling “It’s the Mass which matters”. This will help to prepare us for the new translation of the Mass which we will begin to use in Advent of this year. There will also be several opportunities for reconciliation, that annual preparation for Easter which the Church recommends particularly strongly. May God help us all to keep a good Lent and find our lives set on firmer foundations when Easter comes.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITATION
The RCIA is a process of faith development (for anyone over the age of seven) leading to Easter sacraments - Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist – and beyond. This process is divided into stages. Seven of our young people— Damien Alaura Victoria Brooks Jose and Beatriz Miranda PintosValentina Pintos-Fan Abel Vasquez Niurca Vasquez —will move into the final stage next weekend. At the 5:00 pm Mass they will experience the Rite of Sending as our parish prayerfully sends them to the Rite of Election at the Shrine Sunday afternoon. They, along with all those of our diocese seeking initiation into the Church, will be enrolled in the Book of the Elect. Our soon to be ELECT— will spend the 40 days of LENT in prayerful preparation for full membership in the Church. This is more of a “retreat” time than study time. Please pray for them during this special time. May we be examples to them of committed Catholic Christians. Plan now to join us for their glorious celebration of Initiation at the Vigil, pm.
