EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The growth rate is Pharma companies in India is very high. In the year 2008, Indian pharmaceutical market was assessed at $7,743m which witnessed an augmentation of 4.0% over 2007. Business observers predict that the Indian pharmaceutical market will escalate at an increasing mode as compared to the global pharmaceutical market, at a CAGR of 13.2% during the fiscal years 2009-14 to reach an overall worth of $15,490m in 2014.

India has also appeared as the preferred location for the pharmaceutical companies of the world because of its towering growth scenario furnished by elderly population, alteration in disease profile, developing patent system and socio-economic circumstances.

The competition in the Indian pharmaceutical market is cutthroat and the market is divided among the top 10 pharma companies accounting for 36.1% of the overall R&H sales in the fiscal year2008.

The increasing number of diabetes patients globally is proving a boon for diabetes drugs market. The number of diabetic patients in the world is estimated to reach at more than 250 Million in 2008. The governments worldwide are taking initiatives on various research and development projects in order to improve drug delivery techniques. This may be beneficial in terms of growing consumer base in developing countries like India and China This research is about growth of insulin in south delhi and north delhi(Pitampura).the main objective of this research is to find out different insulin brand available in the market ,to find out the market share of different insulin producing companies, and to find out the doctors who are prescribing these insulins. For this the primary data is collected by different chemist store from south and north delhi.to know that how much insulin that particular chemist store sells from their counter and also know that the number of quantity of all insulin brand that he sell from there store. And then according to that data I have calculated the market share of all the companies.

Brief Introduction About Pharmaceutical Industry in India

India's emerging pharmaceutical industry has appeared as the world leader in the fabrication of standard generic drugs, ever since the Patent Act 1970 permitted India to seriously approach and contribute in the pharmaceutical market worldwide. India is the preferred nation for pharmaceutical generation, with low charges for research and development as well as production of drugs. And the pharmaceutical companies in India have made full use of the favorable environment offered by the country to make it big. The workforce and technological proficiency of pharmaceutical companies in India ensures the growth of the industry on a global scale as well as within India. The sector is predicted to value about $3.1 billion (USD).

Indian firms are laying out strategies to benefit from the Japanese government proposal to endorse generic drugs to minimize healthcare charges.

INSULIN
The increasing number of diabetes patients globally is proving a boon for diabetes drugs market. The number of diabetic patients in the world is estimated to reach at more than 250 Million in 2008. The governments worldwide are taking initiatives on various research and development projects in order to improve drug delivery techniques. This may be beneficial in terms of growing consumer base in developing countries like India and China. The main requirement of present market is to develop efficient delivery methods at low cost and this may change the scenario of the industry. In the human insulin space there are as many as seven brands of both Indian companies and multinationals. The brands available in the country include Insugen of Biocon (2004), Huminsulin of Eli Lilly and Company India (1995), Wosulin of Wockhardt (2003), Recosulin of Shreya Life Sciences (2004), Human Mixtard of Novo Nordisk, Insuman of Aventis Pasteur, Human Mixact of USV, Mixulin of Cadila Pharmaceuticals. Most of these brands are available in vial form with different strengths ranging from 40 iu/ml-100 iu/ml. During 2003±2004 alone, as many as three companies launched human insulin products under different brands averaging at $3 per 10 ml vial. The human insulin market is growing at the rate of 40.5 percent in the insulin market. Wockhardt was the first Indian company to launch the country¶s indigenously developed recombinant human insulin under the brand Wosulin at $3 per 10 ml vial in September 2003. With this it became the first Indian company to launch recombinant human insulin in Asia. Even US Vitamins launched its human insulin product in 2001 but its focus remained on animal insulin. The market for animal insulin products is coming down with increase in human insulin. A year later Bangalore-based Biocon Ltd announced the launch of Insugen, the new generation bio-insulin in November 2004. Insugen was made available to the public in 10 ml vials of 40 iu/ml for an introductory price of $2.8. Shreya Life Sciences, the Indian arm of Moscow-based Shreya Corporation too launched human insulin under the brand name Recosulin in December 2004, exactly a month after the launch of Insugen. Shreya has launched Recosulin at $3 per 10 ml vials (rate fixed by National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) by importing the finished product from Bioton, Poland (manufactured using BTGC technology). Besides Indian companies Eli Lilly entered the Indian insulin market a decade ago (in 1995) under the brand Huminsulin. Before that Novo Nordisk launched its human insulin product and went on to introduce insulin analogs under the brand NovoMix 30 (Premixed Insulin Analogue) and NovoRapid (Rapid Acting Insulin Analogue) for the first time in India. In August 2005, Eli Lilly & Co. India too launched its insulin analogs under the brand Humalog Mix 25-50. Although there are many brands in this space from both local and multinational companies, Rajesh Nanavati, marketing controller, Biogen and Biolife, Shreya Life Sciences observed, ³I don¶t see any competition in the market. We want to focus on our USPs to enhance credibility for our products among patients and doctors and look for growth. Our focus is to provide better and quality product to the customers. It will help us to reach our target of $2.2 million in one year.´

Novo Nordisk leads the domestic market as its sales during last year stood at $24 million, followed by Eli Lilly at $1.2 million and Wockhardt with about $2 million. However, the Indian companies have to put in efforts to capture the market amid stiff competition from the established multinational companies such as Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly and Aventis Pasteur. This is mainly because diabetes patients have been using brands of multinationals for many years.

Definition: One of many hormones that help the body turn the food we eat into energy and
helps store energy to be used later. People with diabetes mellitus, a condition in which the body does not make enough insulin, might need to inject themselves with insulin to help their bodies' cells work properly or Insulin is a hormone that helps move glucose from out of our blood and into our cells so that we can use the glucose for energy. The glucose comes from most of the food that we eat. Insulin lower blood glucose levels facilitates glucose transport in cells and glucose utilization. Increase lipid and glycogen synthesis. Insulin increases amino acid transport into cells and prevents release of amino acids from muscle. Increases movement of K+ and mg2+ into cells. Insulin preparations irrespective of their onset and duration of action into rapid, intermediate or long acting. There are three characteristics that define types of insulin.

Onset: How long it takes for the insulin to start lowering blood glucose. Peak Time: Time after injection when the insulin is the most effective at lowering blood glucose. Duration: How long the insulin keeps lowering blood glucose

Insulin is prescribed by matching the characteristics of a particular insulin with the individual needs of the patient. Some people are on only one kind of insulin, while others take a combination of insulin medication to customize good glucose control. There are four main types of insulin available.

All Insulin are not created equal, each kind has its own unique action. They are not interchangeable. Each type of insulin has a specific job to do. Insulin is injected into the fast tissue which helps it absorb into the blood stream. Some insulin medications work faster than others but doesn¶t last as long, and some insulins last longer but work more gradually than others.

Diabetes
Diabetes is a condition in which a person has a high blood sugar (glucose) level as a result of the body either not producing enough insulin, or because body cells do not properly respond to the insulin that is produced. There are mainly two types of Diabetes: With type 1 diabetes, most of the insulin-producing cells in the body (the pancreatic beta cells) have been destroyed. This limits the amount of insulin available to use or store glucose from food. so the glucose keeps circulating in the blood with no way out. As a result, all individuals with type 1 diabetes need to take supplemental insulin to control their blood glucose levels. With type 2 diabetes, the pancreas may still produce insulin, but several situations can occur. The pancreas produces insufficient amounts, or the body resists the insulin or doesn¶t make optimal use of it.

Novo Nordisk India story

The genesis of Novo Nordisk India goes back to 1990 when a liaison office of Novo Nordisk A/S, was set up in Mumbai. RESEARCH METHDOLOGY

Research ± Research is common parlance refers to a search for knowledge. The Advanced Learner¶s Dictionary of Current English lays down the meaning of research as ³A careful investigation or inquiry specially through search for new facts in any branch of knowledge´ According to Redman & Mory ³A systematized effort to gain new knowledge.´

Research Methodology- It is the way to systematically solve the research problem. It may be understood as a science of studying how research is done scientifically. In it we study the various steps that are generally adopted by a researcher in studying his research problem along with the logic behind them.

Types of research Design:1. Descriptive Research Design ± Descriptive research studies are those studies which are concerned with describing the characteristics of a particular individual, or of a group. 2. Hypothesis Research Design ± Hypothesis testing research studies (generally known as experimental studies) are those where researcher tests the hypotheses of causal relationship between variables. 3. Exploratory Research Design - Exploratory research studies are also termed as formulative Research studies. The main purpose of such studies is that of formulating a problem for more precise investigation or of developing the working hypothesis from and operational point of view. The major emphasis in such studies is on the discovery of idea and insights. As such the research design appropriate for such studies must be flexible enough to provide opportunity for considering different aspects of problem under studies.

Sampling- Sampling may be defined as the selection of some part of an aggregate or totality on the basis of which a judgment about the aggregate is made. In other words, process of obtaining information about an entire population by examining only a part of it.

Types of sampling:1. Systematic Sampling- The most practical way of sampling is to select every ith item on a list. This kind of sampling known as systematic sampling. 2. Stratified Sampling- If a population from which a sample is to be drawn does not constitute a homogeneous group, stratified sampling technique is applied in order to obtain representative sample. 3. Cluster Sampling- If the total area of interest happens to be big one, a convenient way in which is sample can be taken is to be divided into smaller non-overlapping areas called cluster known as cluster sampling. 4. Non probability sampling- In case of non probability sampling it is considered appropriate to use a random selection process where the probability of each cluster being included in the sample is proportional to size of the cluster.

Primary research is conducted for finding out different types of insulin brands available in the market, their average sales per week and the doctors prescribing these brands. This data needs to be collected from South Delhi market namely Yusuf Sarai, Madangir, Malviya Nagar, Khanpur, Hauzrani and North Delhi market namely Pitampura. The respondents are chemist shops who are the primary seller¶s of this product. Findings
During the project work I found that Eli Lilly and Novo nordisk dominate the inslulin market. There are four other companies also in the market but their relative market share is low in comparision of these two companies.
