Cherokee tops Cherry Hill East, 37-27

By MIKE MONOSTRA The Sun A Lenape Regional High School Board of Education member who has had his roots in the district his entire life was chosen as its president last week. David Stow was unanimously voted to serve as the Board Board of Education president at the board’s reorganization meeting. Stow takes over for Ted Shinske. He had served as the board’s vice president in 2013. Stow has been a part of the Lenape district going back to his days as a student at Lenape High School in the 1970s. Stow now lives and represents Medford on the board, and nothing makes him more proud than serving on the district’s Board of Education. “I’m proud to be a member of  this board,” he said. “We have one of the best school districts in this state.” During his acceptance speech to the large crowd gathered at the district’s administration building in Shamong, Stow rattled off the

Arter sworn in as director of freeholders Leah Arter was sworn as director of the Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders Jan. 2, pledging to enact a new  jobs initiative in 2014 to assist unemployed and underemployed residents, and issuing a “budget challenge” to her fellow freeholders to find cost-savings that would reduce property taxes for the sixth consecutive year. Arter was elected during the traditional organizational meeting, held in the Olde Historic Court House in Mt. Holly. The event also included the swearing in of Joe Donnelly of Cinnaminson to his third three-year term on the board; the swearing in of  Timothy Tyler of Fieldsboro to a second five-year term as county clerk; and, Jean Stanfield of Westampton to her fifth three-year term as Sheriff. Now in her third year as a freeholder, Arter, of Moorestown, delivered a State of the County address that highlighted financial accomplishments, noting that Burlington County government

has had a record of spending less money per citizen than any other county in the state. The unfortunate reality, said Arter, is that even though the real estate market is recovering, the county is facing yet another decrease in ratables in 2014 and a corresponding loss in revenue. She said all freeholders should participate in the “hands-on” task of making up that shortfall. Second on the director’s list of  priorities for the new year is the creation of a new Workforce Development Initiative which, she said, is “built upon the premise that every Burlington County resident who wants a job will find one.” This program will target training and other resources available through county schools, the Burlington County Chamber, existing agencies, and other organizations, Arter said, adding, “Most critical to this initiative will be the ongoing participation of business owners and their hiring managers, who will directly con-

vey to us the skills they are looking for in new workers.” She cited three other key goals for the coming year, which included: • Creation of a shared services website. County staff was charged with the responsibility of  creating an interactive webpage where the county, towns and other local entities could post their successful shared services programs and look for others. • Creation of a comprehensive health program. The Health Department is charged with undertaking an aggressive campaign to encourage residents to eat healthier, exercise regularly, manage stress and take advantage of free health screenings. • Stronger communication with local business. Arter, who owns a small business, charged herself with the responsibility of  building upon the county’s “Buy Local” program by visiting downtowns and local stores and shops, and giving other business owners an opportunity to share.

When it came to snow removal during a storm that hit the township just after the new year, Mayor Randy Brown had some good news and bad news. The good news was the township’s snow removal was excellent. The bad news was the county’s effort was, as Brown put it, “an embarrassment.” During his comments at the end of last week’s council meeting, Brown made it known that he was extremely disappointed with Burlington County's effort in removing snow from county roads, which were reportedly a mess compared to the roads the township treated. “I really do not need to be at the

corner of Main and Maple with three of our police officers at 5 o’clock on a Friday just about punching the lights out on a county worker finally showing up with a truck,” Brown said. Brown read an email from a longtime Marlton resident who complimented the township’s roads, but said the county roads were still dangerous even 48 hours after the storm. This brought up a plea by Brown that council consider entering into a shared services agreement with Burlington County in which it would be permitted to assist in treating county roads. Township Manager William Cromie is working on crafting an agreement that should be on the agenda at the next council meeting on Jan. 21. Brown asked Cromie if the

township could take action on county roads if a snowstorm takes place prior to the next council meeting. “We’re going to talk about that when we talk about the details,” Cromie said. “If we need to have a special meeting to get it done, then we’ll do that.” In other news: • Evesham Township council continued its tradition of rotating the deputy mayor’s role as Ken D’Andrea was named to the position at last week’s reorganization meeting. He will be taking over for 2013 deputy mayor Debbie Hackman. The appointment was one that Brown was particularly excited about. “What you’ve done and where you’ve come, I’m proud to have you sitting next to me, I’m proud to have you as my deputy mayor, I’m proud to call you my friend,” Brown said to D’Andrea. D’Andrea emphasized how the harmony and cooperation among council members has allowed them to make progress. “In 2014, we’re looking to move forward,” D’Andrea said. “We have a great team, a great expanded team, a great town that together, we can solve a lot of the challenges and enjoy the great rapport that we have.” • Council made most of its professional appointments at the reorganization meeting. None of  the appointments differ from 2013. There are still a handful of  seats open on boards and committees that need to be filled. Brown said the planning and zoning board each have one open seat, while the environmental committee has two open spots. Brown asked council to come forward in the coming weeks with any candidates who would be a good fit for the open spots. • Evesham Township's next council meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 4 p.m. in the township's municipal building.

Next LRHSD Board of  Education meeting is Feb. 19 NEXT

Continued from page 1 names of many teachers. These were the teachers Stow had dating all the way back to kindergarten and through his entire career at Lenape. “All of these people have dedicated their lives,” he said. “Not for fame and certainly not for fortune. These people have dedicated their lives to young people.” With Stow moving up to president, the board unanimously elected Linda Eckenhoff to take over as vice president. The board also made board and professional appointments during the reorganization portion of the meeting.

In other news: • Superintendent Carol Birnbohm informed the board that unannounced lockdown drills were held at the high schools for the first time. The school district worked with the respective local authorities in conducting the drills. She said having unannounced drills allowed school administration and local authorities to better assess school security and safety, something she emphasized as a priority in the district. • Birnbohm praised the choirs at each of the district’s four high schools for their work during the holiday season. All school choirs performed throughout their communities du ring December. “We received numerous letters of gratitude for their service,” she said.

In addition, Birnbohm mentioned that the Cherokee High School choir took a trip to the White House for a special performance. • Birnbohm also praised the school board for its service during her report. January is New Jersey School Board Recognition month. • The Board of Education approved a donation for the Cherokee High School’s Renaissance Program during the action portion of the meeting. The Evesham Celebrations Foundation donated $500 to the program. • The next Lenape Regional High School District Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the district administration at 93 Willow Grove Road in Shamong.
