ife is meaningful when it is lived in a structured and organized way. If
we observe the activities of our previous year,we will find that we were
successful at many tasks but there are several which remained pending because
we postponed them. Life is more successful when it is lived keeping pace with
time. So it is of utmost importance to accomplish the task in time. It is effective
to pick up a small diary and note down all the mistakes we made in 2014 and try
to correct them this year.
Plan this year in a more organized way. Organize your next day’s activities
the previous night before going to bed. Follow this planned schedule next day.
This kind of an activity will ensure that all important tasks are done, thus,
enhancing your efficiency. It will boost your confidence as you conquered the
laziness of your mind.
As the human mind is fickle, it keeps changing its thoughts every moment. To
avoid such confusion, it is better to organize your day and execute it as you have
planned. Several dates for admissions to schools and colleges in 2015 through
competitive exams have already been announced. Keep a track of these dates.
Plan and organize your time for study, preparation and practice. All the best for
the rest of 2015.

Colleges & Beyond

‘Knowing is not enough; we must apply.
Willing is not enough; we must do.’

-Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

What all can I do if I am interested in space?
Since childhood when we look into sky, it
fascinates us. We meet many aspiring minds
willing to be associated with space science, but
as they grow this general interest fades away
due to lack of proper guidance and limited
opportunities. As this field requires one who
is highly skilled in their field, very less people
make through it even after having interest. In
space science we study fields related to space
travel and space exploration (including space
medicine), space archaeology and science
performed in outer space. There are several
branches of space science such as:
• Astronomy: This incorporates study of

celestial objects and components of
universe.
• Astronautics: This is one which interests
engineers. This is the theory and practice
of navigation beyond earth’s atmosphere
or science and technology of spaceflight.
• Related Interdisciplinary fields: This has
amalgamation of various science streams
such as Astrophysics, Astrobiology,Astro
chemistry, Archaeostronomy etc.
In short you can be astronauts, engineers,
space scientists and technologists of
various fields to be part of it.

What is IIST?
centres all over India.
The admissions to the undergraduate (B.Tech.)
programmes for 2013 and 2014 were
made through the All India Rank List
prepared and published by the Central
Board of Secondary Education (CBSE),
based on the Joint Entrance Examination
(JEE) - Main. Previously, IIST admitted
students through the IIT-JEE rank lists
from 2007 to 2009, and conducted its
own entrance exam called ISAT from
2010 to 2012. However, applicants will
need to qualify the JEE Advanced exam, and marks
obtained in the same will be used in determining the
eligibility of the candidate. IIST offers 156 seats for
admission to its B.Tech programmes in Aerospace
Engineering, Avionics and Physical Sciences.

Campus Desk

For one who is interested in space, in India we
have IIST which is Asia’s first space Institute and
first in the world to offer the complete
range of undergraduate, post graduate,
doctoral programmes with specific focus to
space science, technology and applications
located at Valiamala, Thiruvananthapuram,
Kerala. It functions as an autonomous body
sponsored by the Indian Space Research
Organisation(ISRO) under the Department of
Space, Government of India. It was established
in 2007. Complete boarding and lodging are
offered to the students inside the campus at no cost,
provided they meet prescribed academic standards. The
students meeting these standards are then recruited as
scientists and engineers in the Department of Space
facilities and Indian Space Research Organization

What is BITS?

B

irla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS)
is a premier Institute regarded high amongst
the nationally reputed Engineering Institutes in India.
Candidates aspire to secure the much coveted seats in
BITS, as it similar to the Indian Institutes of Technology
(IITs)
offers
not
only
engineering
specializations
but
also
pure
science
specializations.
The
university
has 15
academic departments,
and focuses primarily on

undergraduate education in engineering and the sciences.
It has established centres at Goa, Hyderabad and Dubai.
BITS administers the all-India computerised
competitive entrance examination, BITSAT (BITS
Admission Test), Admission is merit-based, as assessed
by the BITSAT examination. The fully residential institute
is privately supported. If there is one private college in
India that can be said to be better than many IITs and
NITs, it is BITS Pilani. Even in these times, when money
seems to be driving the admission to private colleges in
India, BITS continues to be a merit-driven institute.

What should be my strategy to prepare for JEE?

W

hen we want to ride a bicycle, we don’t need
to revise the techniques mentally or give a
practice. We can just go ride it. Similarly our preparation
for JEE should be like that we are always prepared for it
and don’t need to brush up even a bit just before the exam.
This is achieved by working smartly. The questions of
this exam are not direct but application based. The beauty
of this exam is that, it develops different elegant ways to
ask same concept year after year. So we should prepare
appropriately to crack it.
If you are in II PU right now, with
just 3 months in your hand, it is very
important that you sit down and
plan out the coming three months.
Distribute a fixed number of hours/
days to each chapter of Physics,
Chemistry and Maths (How much
time each chapter will require has
to be assessed by you). Spend less
time on topics that you are already
good at and more
on those in which you are weaker. While distributing
time, please keep in mind that there will be pre-board and
board exams in between during which you will have to be
studying for only that.
Secondly, do not waste time unnecessarily in going
into too much depth in a particular topic. The technique of
making short notes in your own words is always helpful
in revising the complete chapters in short duration. Also
there are certain set of questions in each chapter, on
solving which a wide range of doubts are cleared. These
questions from each chapter are to be marked and should
be practiced when you feel you are losing the concepts. Go
through previous year papers and point out the concepts
that are asked frequently. Do only as much is required
according to the pattern. This is only because you do not
have time. Otherwise, diving into your topic of interest is
good.
Clarification of doubts is something which most of us
take very lightly not realising that it forms one of the most
important of JEE preparation. For any particular topic, go
to the most appropriate source for that topic. This could
include your teachers, friends, books or the internet.
Whatever you do, do not compromise on your body.
Sleep when you have to, eat when you have to. Take short
breaks in between long hours of study. Your freshness and
your energy when you sit to study affect your grasping
power. Also, it is only an exam; it is not the end of the
world.
For any challenge that life throws at you, there is one
thing that will always be applicable. And that is hard

work. All the above points are useless if you are not ready
to toil. So, for the next 3-4 months, compose yourself, try
to get rid of distractions and channelise your energy in
one direction. Believe me, there is nothing like success.
And if you succeed in getting a seat at a top IIT or NIT, I
cannot explain the amount of accolades and adulation that
you will earn.
If you are in I PU, all above points are applicable
to you as well, only the time frame
is larger. So your planning can be
comfortable as regards the time you
spend on each chapter. Try to stay
with the pace of the school/coaching
institute you are studying at. What is
being taught there currently should be
your current priority. Go through the
chapters that you have missed out or are
not confident about during weekends.
Keep giving tests regularly so that you
have a practice well before hand and so that you don’t
lose touch of topics.
Inculcate a habit of clearing your doubts as and when
you get them. Do not keep them for later. If you do this
regularly, you will grasp the content better than your
competitors.
JEE may be a one day exam, that too objective. But
success in JEE is achieved only by constantly developing
the art of making notes over the course of PUC. Notes
shouldn’t be too detailed, at the same time they should
contain all the important things that you would like to
recollect while solving problems.
As time is on your side, your practice should cover
all possible questions that can be asked from a particular
chapter. As mentioned earlier, at this stage of preparation,
it is essential to mark those questions that cover a wide
range of concepts. This you have to do so that you do not
waste time searching for the right questions when JEE is
at your doorstep.
Once again, keep doing what you like to do during
your free time. If you play a musical instrument, a sport, if
you read or write, you do not need to compromise on these
things at all as far as you do not overdo it. Still, if you’ve
decided that JEE is what you aim for, your preparation
should be at the top of your schedule.
And of course, work very, very hard. Beat your own
self every day. Nothing said above is more important than
this, not just for JEE but for anything in life. You are one
of many performers on the stage of the world today. To
have the spotlight turned towards you, you have to put
your heart and soul into it.

How are you benefited by
studying in good engineering colleges?

E

ntering college is a big step for anyone. The
college environment is very different from that
at school. It provides a great opportunity towards selfbuilding. Here is where the role of a good college comes
into play. Good engineering colleges are blessed with
highly qualified faculty and equipped with best teaching
facilities. They strive to implant the seeds of engineering
in us to a good depth.
Apart from academics, good colleges provide
exposure in different areas. College is a place where we
start getting the first touch of “freedom”. We become
free to take decisions of our life and college becomes
the platform. You start getting involved in several cocurricular activities like sports, dance, drama etc. You

are surrounded by the best technical minds, and it aids
in your development. In the midst of these minds, you
can think beyond dimensions and can come out with new
ideas to the world.
Organising a complete fest rests on the shoulders of
students and the entire college works as a team to conduct
it successfully. Several successful startup companies of
our time have evolved from college campuses. Likewise,
a number of authors, filmmakers, scientists, etc. have
emerged from premier colleges. And the best college
comes with a complete package of this diversity.
So we should put in our best effort for entrance exams
because a good college leads to a better personality, better
ideas, independent thinking and fearlessness.

Importance to board or competitive exam….I am puzzled!!

C

put in in a planned way. This generally ensures a good
score. But the concepts to be used in paper of JEE can be
strengthened only by solving a multitude of questions and
grasping the core content of a chapter.
So, with 2015 knocking on the door, most of the
chapters have been covered by your teachers. Thus, what
can be done best to deal with JEE, CET as well as boards
is adoption of parallel study technique. There are several
topics which have same syllabus in boards as well as in
these entrance exams. So, for these topics short notes can
be prepared for board type questions and simultaneously
numerous conceptual questions can be practiced on them.
And remaining topics can be studied when board exams
are nearer. This will also ensure a quick revision at the
time of need.
If you want to end up at a good engineering college and
haven’t started practising problems already, now is the
time to put full focus on these. While solving questions
it is also very important to keep time in mind. For each
question, try doing it in quickest possible time.

BITSAT differs from the conventional written examination; the

BITS Pilani offers four-year integrated first-degree programs

ompetitive exams to great extent are going to
determine your future. And in the normalization
techniques followed at present, marks in board exams
are taken in account for rank generation in JEE and
other entrance exams. So a balanced way has to be
chosen between the quantities of effort laid upon these
segments.
If we look upon the nature of
these exams closely, then we will
find that board exam evaluates
the overall subject knowledge
of the subject whereas JEE
demands application of this subject
knowledge in the form of problems.
A detailed theoretical know how
is required to be mastered for

Since 2005 admission to BITS has been offered

The OutBoxers

n the second week of January, The SchoolEngg
Team of NITK Surathkal organised an interschool science, aptitude and logical thinking quiz,
‘The OutBoxers’ at Mahesh PU College. This was a
one-of-a-kind quiz competition aimed at testing the
creativity of students of Standards VIII & IX rather
than just testing their general knowledge. Like the
name suggests, the motive was to make students
think out of the box.
We at SchoolEngg felt that the
knowledge base of students is
becoming too bookish and that
they have to be encouraged to link
concepts learnt in books to the
outside world. For example, one of
the questions asked during the quiz
was – “Which colour is least useful
for plant life?”
The answer to this question is, believe it or not,
green. Light from the sun is composed of seven
colours. Plants absorb those colours of light that
they find useful and reflect those that they don’t.
The green colour of plants that we see is because
plants reflect the green coloured light towards us
and absorb the other colours.Through many such
questions, we attempted to deepen the thought

process of students.
In total there were 11 participating schools. The
event was conducted in three stages. The 1st Round
was a written test. This round had around 1300
participants in total. The 2nd Round and the Grand
Finale’ were held on Sunday at Mahesh PU College.
The 2nd Round was a screening round for the Grand
Finale’. Six teams made it to the Grand Finale’. In
the end, the team of Praneet and
Suraj of SharadaVidyalaya emerged
victorious.
The Chief Guest for the occasion
was Dr K N Lokesh, HOD of Dept of
Civil Engineering at NITK Surathkal
and father of Indian cricket team
player K L Rahul.
The motive behind holding such an
event was to show the importance
of the practical application of concepts that students
study in books. Less than half of science can be
learnt from books. The rest comes from applying
this learning in our daily life. And, why science?
Well, it is science that leads to engineering, it is
science that leads to medicine, it is science that leads
to entrepreneurship and we all know the importance
of all of these for the development of our country.

s my son completed his schooling at JNV
mudipu, we didn’t have to worry about his
quality of education. The best place to study with free
education. But when he came to Class 11th, we were
much bothered about his competitive exams. From
the observation and feedback from the school, we
felt our son was too silent and lazy, but few teachers
mentioned that he thinks lots. As a parent, I knew he
was lazy, most of the time he prefers being in bedrather
than reading when he visits home. Mr.Gururajfrom

Doubt Desk
How much time must be given to
each subject separately?

Many doubts occur on the distribution of
time to Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
separately. As there are individual cutoffs for
each of these subjects, no subject can be left alone. In
the course of study our general interest develops in some
subject and we give maximum time to it at the cost of

others. This looks like a lucrative method to crack the
exam but for most it proves fatal. Ultimately, it is the
aggregate marks that matter in the ranking process.
So the topics whose questions can be scored well with
least effort are to be selected and given more time. As
the mental ability of students varies, so fixed number of
hours of study is never a factor in selection process. We
should judiciously decide hour of study to each subjects
according to our grasping power and speed.

From which class onwards can children start important as it is during these days that concepts of
all topics should become very clear. It will really help

students in performing well in competitive exams.
MATRIX CLASSES located in Surathkal will provide
best coaching in the name of Foundation coaching for 8,
9 and 10th class.

Improve your memory..!
Often, success in academics is based on our memory capacity. Mnemonics is the art of making a
story out of anything that is to be memorized. This is done through a series of pictures because it
is easier to remember pictures than words.
We shall demonstrate the Mnemonics technique to memorize the difference between Metals and
Non-Metals.

Brain Gym

Studies should be conceptual. If the present schooling
is good, it is more than sufficicent. NCERT contents
are usually enough. 8th to 12th standard study is very

S: Solid
S: Ringing sound
D: Ductile
M:Malleable
H: Heat
E: Electricity
L: Lustrus(Shining)
Instead of remembering the whole table of differences, just remember a light bulb as shown as above.
SSDMHEL: these are the first words from each of the points above.
Just feel and imagine a bulb, it is Solid, if you put it down, it makes a Sound. It breaks as it is Brittle (which is
opposite to Ductility and Malleability). Now imagine a new bulb (You broke the other bulb in your imagination!!
No Worries!!). Now when we supply electricity, the bulb emits Heat and shines (Lustrous). Just focus on the Bold
letters provided, its SSDMHEL!! Simple right?
So it is easy to remember the bulb rather than a whole table. Just recall the bulb in your exam and decode all
the related points and write it in neat sentences. Enjoy your exam!!
All great persons have mastered the art of Mnemonics at some point in their lives. In MATRIX CLASSES, we
demonstrate 10 different memory techniques to remember your school chapters as per the topics desired. It will
enhance your skills in memory development and you can score high in exams.

(2nd yr, B.Tech Chemical Engg, IIT Chennai)

T

oday I am studying at my dream place IIT-Chennai.
I never knew about all these top Engineering
institutes like IIT, IIST & NITs, when I was at school
in KIOCL- Kudremukh campus (Iron ore place), a very
interior place of DK. Later I was shifted to Surathkal
and did my Tenth at Mahalingeshwara English Medium
School, Surathkal. Once I finished schooling with very
good marks, I was in a state of confusion to select the
best PU colleges around the city. But my dad was very
strict that the college should be near to home. So that
the student will get time to read and it was very true in
my case and I experienced it. In the first week of first
year, Gururaj sir visited my college and gave an input
on various Engineering and Medical Entrance Exams
and pointed out the importance of coaching in first year
(usually by the trend it starts in second year). He gave
very interesting examples and explained these why these
exams are not tough as it seems. Actually sir inspired us
and gave a clear cut idea of competitive exams. Example:
2+2 is how much? A simple question. All students in my
class room cheered and shouted and said 4. Now he said

if I propose only one prize, what happen?
Only one person will get the prize out of
80 students. That means the one who gives
the right answer at first. This happens only
with proper practice. Obviously the rest
of the students are not getting the prize, it
doesn’t mean they are not intelligent. So if
a simple question becomes tough for the
rest of the students, it means that competition is going to
be immense. Same happens in India for all competitive
exams. Nearly five lakh students write and only thirteen
thousand seats are available. I joined MATRIX CLASS
next day with more spirit and teachers of MATRIX
helped me to clear the JEE exams with 79 state rank. After
that teachers of MATRIX helped me with counselling
process of IITs. Finally it ended with joining Chemical
engineering at IIT Chennai. For now, I stop here. I will
communicate many more things about IIT Chennai in the
coming issues of MATRIX BULLETIN. Always keep it
in mind that planned and systematic study will make you
clear all top exams.
Tejaswini
(2nd year B.Tech in EEE, NITK)

T

he exams I had taken up with ranks were
K-CET (Rank=1502), JEE Mains (State rank=92
AIR=18,075) and JEE Advanced (score=95 was not in
the rank list).
The branches that I got from the counseling process
were EC in SJCE (Mysore), EEE in PESIT, CS in RVCE
through CET and EEE in NITK Surathkal through JEE
Mains. My first preference was EC in SJCE, Mysore until
the JEE ranks were out. I was interested in electronics.
SJCE seemed a good and efficient choice because of the
good feedback I got from people about it, the environment,
the campus, the placements and other stuff like hostel etc.

I was focused on learning the basic concepts, as I came
to know it will help me in going through the problems
of these exams. I paid equal attention to both boards
and entrance exams. Board marks really helped me. The
options that I rejected were PESIT and RVCE just because
I believed Mysore as a better environment to learn than
Bangalore. Don’t be stressed under exam pressure. Try to
find a way to handle it. Be confident about yourself and
