pher Kate Harris will be speaking
to the Kohler High School. The
formal presentation will be held in
the Kohler Memorial Theater from

small discussion group for those
more interested. All parents and
community members are invited to
join us for this unique opportunity.
Named one of Canada's top 10
adventurers by Explore magazine,
and winner of the Ellen Meloy
Desert Writers Award, Kate Har-
ris’s essays, poetry, travel articles
and photography have featured or
are pending in Sierra, CutBank,
Wend, Outpost, and more. She is

the International Institute for Sus-
tainable Development. As a
Rhodes and Morehead-Cain
scholar, Kate studied biology, the
history of science, earth and plan-

UNC-Chapel Hill, Oxford, and
MIT. She is most widely known
for CYCLING SILK, a 10-month,
10-country, 10,000-km expedition
by bike along the Silk Road. She
has travelled to all seven conti-

wouldn't mind someday hitching a
rocket to Mars. Kate now lives off-
grid in a log cabin on the border of
northern British Columbia, the
Yukon, and Alaska. For more in-
formation, please visit her website:

Kohler students complete
biotechnology and molecular
biology curriculum
College Prep Biology students at
Kohler High School have recently
completed the biotechnology com-
ponent of the biology curriculum.
Biotechnology is the technology
of using living things to create
useful products. Biotechnology
has historically been used in the
making of bread, wine, soap, the
treatment of waste, and the pro-
duction of cheese. Selective
breeding of agricultural animals
and selective practices in crop
planting have occurred for hun-
dreds of years. Biotechnology has
changed due to the advancements
of technologies such as computers
and software in the 1970’s to in-
clude the development of human
insulin for the treatment of dia-
betes, human growth hormone for
children, and identification of spe-
cific genes responsible for genetic
disorders, and in some cases treat-
ment for those disorders.
College Prep Biology students
learn and then use the steps neces-
sary to move a gene from one or-
ganism to another. The process
involves the isolation of plasmid
DNA, using endonuclease restric-
tion enzymes to cut DNA at spe-
cific sites in the DNA sequence,
ligation of the plasmid fragments,
transformation of bacteria, prepa-
ration and casting of agarous gel,
electrophoresis of restriction en-
zyme digested DNA, staining,
viewing, and photographing the
gel, and learning the process by
which scientists determine DNA
fragment size. Ask any College
Prep Biology student for more in-
formation on this experiment.
They will be happy to share details
of their successful experience!

Five students selected to
participate in Trees for Tomorrow
This fall five students were se-
lected to participate in the high
school program at Trees For To-
morrow. TFT is an independent,
nonprofit, natural resource special-
ity school. Students selected in-
cluded; Andrew Bryce, Megan
Conklin, Katie Lindow, Katie Ru-
elle, and Sarah Sutherland. The
trip lasted from November fourth
through the seventh.
Throughout the trip students
took courses and participated in
many fun, educational activities
such as archery, compass and GPS
navigation, tree identification, an-
imal classification, wolf behavior,
and survival skills. Everyday, stu-
dents take a course about a specific
skill and then go on a hike and
practice the skill on their own.
One of their favorite activities was
navigating with compasses and
GPS units.
The students said that Trees For
Tomorrow was an awesome expe-
rience that taught them a lot of in-
teresting things about the
environment and nature. Trees for
Tomorrow is a Wisconsin environ-
mental tradition, offering pro-
grams, workshops, and special
interest classes to students since
1944. TFT provides participants
an opportunity that none forget.
TFT is a natural resource educa-
tion program that gives its partici-
pants a better understanding of
resource conservation and man-
agement. The program especially
focuses on the forest ecosystem
and the environmental relation-
ships that the ecosystem entails.
The programs present a balanced
variety of perspectives on natural
resource topics so that participants
can develop informed decisions on
wise management of our re-
sources. Kohler High School has
selected many students over the
years to participate in this once in
a life-time opportunity. This year
is no exception. Scholarships for
the fall 2012 trip were provided by
the Sheboygan County Conserva-
tion Association and Kohler Com-
pany.

Kohler Athletic Booster
Club’s “SWIM-EAT-GYM”
makes a big SPLASH!
Submitted by Suzanne Fink
Kid’s enjoyed four hours of non-
stop action on Saturday, April 27 at
the Kohler Athletic Booster Club’s
Gym and Swim fundraising event. It
started out with some super-soaking
fun in the pool, then a quick bite to
eat and onto the gym for games and
activities! The Booster Club would
like to thank Jen Vallo and her pool
staff for accommodating the large
group. A BIG thanks to our athletes
who volunteered for the event: Noah
Fink, Cody Gartman, Frannie Hill-
strom, Brennan Ladwig, and Paul Vi-
cente. If you’re interested in

Booster Club, check out our link on

The Kohler fifth grade girls bas-
ketball team finished their season
taking a second place medal at the
2013 15th Annual Muskie
Shootout at Lakeland College on
Sunday, April 14. The team de-
feated Kettle Morraine and

the win. The coaches extended
their congratulations to the team
for “a great season and an awe-
some final finish.”

Students learn to benefit the
environment through global
learning and observations
GLOBE is a worldwide pro-
gram composed of students,
teachers, and scientists that
work together to investigate
and learn more about the envi-
ronment. Students and their
teachers across the globe are in
charge of collecting and sharing
data with other scientists and
programs. Students in over 112
countries participate in GLOBE
data collection led by over
58,000 trained teachers. The
Kohler GLOBE Program is
among 24,000 other schools
that also collect data across the
globe. Over 1.5 million stu-
dents have contributed more
than 23 million measurements
to the GLOBE database.
The GLOBE program in
Kohler is made up of students
in College Prep Biology and
General Biology. These stu-
dents share the responsibilities
of collecting and recording at-
mospheric data every school
day. Upper classmen in College
Prep Chemistry, AP Biology,
and College Prep Physics con-
tribute to the collection of hy-
drology data during the fall and
spring. These students make up
Kohler’s Testing the Waters
Team.
The atmospheric data col-
lected by students in GLOBE is
entered onto an international
web-site data base. Students
enter measurements like high
and low temperatures, amounts
of precipitation and pH, cloud
type, and relative humidity.
When combined with other
data presented by students and
teachers throughout countries
around the world, scientists can
interpret and observe changes
in the environment. Overall,
this program allows every par-
ticipating student, teacher, and
scientist to track and learn more
about our constantly changing
environment.

Revised AP Biology course
has students conduct
biotechnology investigations
The College Board has revised the
AP Biology course into a course that
focuses on enduring, conceptual un-
derstandings and the content that sup-
ports them. This approach may enable
students to spend less time on factual
recall and more time on inquiry-based
learning of essential concepts and bet-
ter help them to develop the reasoning
skills necessary to engage in science
practices. This redesigned curriculum
will also provide students the experi-
ences necessary to design a plan for
collecting data, analyzing data, apply-
ing mathematical routines, and con-
necting concepts. One area of the new
curriculum, Big Idea 3 Genetics and
Information Transfer, has students
conduct two biotechnology investiga-
tions. One investigation is a bacterial
transformation in which Kohler stu-
dents transformed E. coli with an
ampicillin resistance gene which was
fused with the GFP (green fluorescent
protein). The resultant ampicillin re-
sistant bacterial colonies were grown
on an ampicillin plate and exhibited
fluorescent properties with an ultravi-
olet light source. The second investi-
gation had Kohler students complete a
restriction enzyme analysis of DNA
then calculate the sizes of restriction
enzyme fragment length and create a
standard curve.
