Medical Physiology and

Career opportunities

This degree allows you to study the medical
sciences with an emphasis on the diagnosis
and treatment of disease. Our course is
designed for students who wish to study
a combined programme of anatomy,
physiology, cell biology, and pharmacology
in years one and two, before specialising in
year three.
Year zero
If you have not studied biology or chemistry
to A level (or equivalent) we offer the Medical
Physiology and Therapeutics degree with an
integrated foundation year.
Year one
During the first year you will study the major
body systems, including renal, cardiovascular,
respiratory, endocrine, immune, nervous and
musculoskeletal systems, in addition to population
health and epidemiology.
Year two
In your second year you will continue to study the
major body systems and will have the opportunity
to develop more specialist knowledge by taking
a combination of core and optional modules
covering topics including:
• reproduction
• neuroscience
• respiratory and cardiovascular sciences
• histopathology and imaging
• cancer biology
Year three
The final year of the course provides an
opportunity for you to undertake specialist study
by choosing from a range of optional modules
(including Aerobic Performance, Biologicals as
Future Medicines, Rehabilitation, Pharmacology,
and Lipid Signalling). Students will take two core

modules in Research Methods and Statistics,
and Personal and Professional Development in
addition to a large research project that spans the
final semester. The research project carries 50%
of the credit available in the final year and allows
students to work at the forefront of scientific and
clinical research.

Careers and employability

Why study Medical Physiology and
Therapeutics at Nottingham?

Medical Physiology and Therapeutics students
also work closely (and share some teaching)
with medical students within the school, and are
therefore very well placed to undertake further
study in graduate entry medicine with us (or at
another university) on completion of their degree.

We are a friendly school, whose staff members
are internationally renowned as some of the
leading experts in their fields. You will be taught
by a dedicated team of staff and will experience
a range of teaching styles. You will gain first-hand
experience of working at the forefront of scientific
research and practice, and spend half of your
final year carrying out research in a laboratory or
clinical environment.

Entry requirements

We offer our Medical Physiology and Therapeutics
degree as a three-year course for applicants
with A levels (or equivalent) in biology and/
or chemistry, or as a four-year course with an
integrated foundation year for applicants who have
not studied the sciences at A level. Entry is highly
competitive and each course has its own set of
entry criteria. Please visit the online prospectus
for the most up to date information on entry
requirements:
www.nottingham.ac.uk/ugstudy

Our students graduate with the knowledge, skills
and experience to gain entry into employment in a
wide range of fields. Examples of just a few of the
professions that our graduates can enter include
biotechnology, clinical trial management, and
pharmaceutical or clinical research.

The University’s Careers and
Employability Service

Our Careers and Employability Service, which
is based on University Park Campus, offers an
extensive range of careers-oriented services,
including CV-writing sessions, interview advice,
presentations by major employers and general
careers advice. As a University of Nottingham
graduate, you will receive lifelong support from
the service. This means that you can ask a careers
adviser to look over your job application by email
or Skype, or in person, and you can also access
a database of graduate vacancies. For more
information see:

Study abroad

As a University of Nottingham student, you can
apply to study abroad for either one semester or
one year as part of your degree. Studying abroad
demonstrates to future employers that a student
is independent, adaptable, and able to thrive
within new settings and different cultures. Medical
Physiology and Therapeutics students can also
apply to undertake their final year research project
at an overseas university or with an industrial
partner.
If you prefer to complete your degree work in
Derby and Nottingham, there are still opportunities
for short periods of study abroad during the
summer vacation at our China and Malaysia
campuses. As the summer schools do not
contribute towards your degree credits, you can
study whatever interests you.
Further information can be found on the study
abroad website at:
