Non-Stipendiary Junior Research Fellowship in Medical Sciences
St Anne’s College
The Governing Body of St Anne's College invites applications for a Non-Stipendiary
Research Fellowship in Medical Sciences. The post will be tenable from 1st July 2015 (or as
soon as practicable before or after) for up to three years.
A key aim of the Fellowship is to foster the ongoing relationship between the College
undergraduate and postgraduate student body and the Centre for Personalised Medicine, an
innovative partnership between the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics and St Anne’s
College (http://www.well.ox.ac.uk/cpm/home). Applicants for this Fellowship should be able to
demonstrate an interest in the work and direction of the Centre, as well as a willingness to
engage current students at St Anne’s (undergraduate and postgraduate) in its work. CPM
engagement is not expected to occupy more than a few hours each week and applications are
welcome from across medical sciences. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to set out their
interests in and ideas for CPM initiatives. The successful candidate may also contribute as
Adviser to graduate members of St Anne’s.
Centre for Personalised Medicine
Rapid advances in scientific knowledge and the declining cost of new technologies are enabling
research in genomics to have an impact on health and healthcare, through ‘personalised
medicine’. The Centre aims to provide a focus for education, multi-disciplinary collaboration and
dissemination of information, from basic science through to the clinic to help drive forward a
more integrated approach to genomics in personalised medicine. The Steering Group for the
Centre is co-chaired by Professor Peter Donnelly, Director of the Wellcome Trust Centre for
Human Genetics and Fellow of St Anne’s College, and Mr Tim Gardam, Principal of St Anne’s

St Anne’s is a modern college both physically and in outlook, and is noted for its lively and
unstuffy approach to teaching and research, a legacy of the pioneering spirits of the College's
founders. It was founded in 1878 to promote the education of women within the University of
Oxford. St Anne’s is committed to supporting initiatives that cross the boundaries of traditional
disciplines and to integrating undergraduates, graduates and research and tutorial fellows in

Medical Sciences at St Anne’s
St Anne’s has long had a strong and growing commitment to Medical Sciences. We have an
annual intake of sixteen undergraduates to the various Medical Sciences degree programmes
and a robust cohort of doctoral students. We have two Fellows responsible for Pre-Clinical
Medicine (Dr Helen Christian and Dr Francis Szele), one Fellow in Biochemistry (Dr David
Harris) and one Fellow in Experimental Psychology (Professor Kate Watkins). For the benefit of
the Pre-Clinical students, we have made a determined effort to retain our clinical students and
attract others. With Professor Tim Lancaster (Professor in General Practice and Director of
Clinical Studies) and Professor Paresh Vyas (WIMM - MRC Molecular Haematology Unit), the
numbers of clinical students at St Anne’s have steadily grown.
It is expected that the Fellowship will be awarded to candidates who has recently completed
their doctorate. Those candidates who have not completed their doctorate should provide
evidence that they are likely to be in a position to submit their thesis before taking up the
Fellowship.
Non-Stipendiary Junior Research Fellowship in Medical Sciences

The Fellowship will be awarded for one year in the first instance and will be renewed for a
second and a third year provided that Governing Body is satisfied that the Fellow is fulfilling the
academic and other requirements of the Fellowship. To this end, the Fellow will be asked to
submit a written report at the end of the Easter vacation of the first and second years. It is a
condition of the Fellowship that the Fellow will live in Oxford, if not in the College, and will take
part in College life during term.
The Fellow will be a member of the Senior Common Room, and will be entitled to all meals free
during term, and breakfast and one main meal a day during vacation except when the hall is
closed.
