The Meeting of Charla and Adakiss
It was around 8:30 p.m. on a Friday night, and I sat crouched in the shadows of a dimly lit street, against the shadowy adobe wall of a human home, my wings tucked tightly against my back, my long tail curled at my feet. I narrowed my skyblue eyes, raising my nostrils to the sky, trying to discern the scent that had brought me here, to Santa Fe, New Mexico. I snorted softly in frustration. Nothing. My upper lip curled slightly into an annoyed snarl, revealing a long, ivory fang that could pierce any known object, man-made or not. The bushes on the side of the street rustled, making me tense even more. A cat sauntered out of the leaves, not noticing the crimson-scaled creature sitting a few feet away. I growled softly, making the cat freeze, its fur rising on its back. It looked in my direction, let out a hiss, and darted away in a flash of grey fur. I wrinkled my scaly nose. That scent the cat had on its fur... was exactly like the one that had brought me here. I got to all four paws, taking care not to accidentally knock into something with my tail. I kept to the shadows, following the cat’s scent, until I faced plain looking adobe house that was across the street with a green Subaru parked in the front. I crept swiftly across the street, ducking into some bushes on the other side. I peeked out, and silently cursed to myself. Being a Dragon, I could shape-shift into any size I wanted, but the smallest was about 5 feet 8 inches. The bushes weren’t enough to hide me completely, so I carefully stepped out into the open, keeping as low as possible to the ground, ducking around the green Subaru and through the open gate that led to what I guessed was the front door. A large window occupied most of the wall that I was facing, giving off more light than I would have liked, the doorway only another two feet from that. I stopped at the lights edge, sniffing at the air. I almost gagged at the strength of the strange scent. It was most definitely here… whatever it was. I noticed across from the doorway there was a large hedgerow of bushes that I could easily hide in, except that I would have to cross the pool of light. I crept up against the wall, risking a glance into the window. The house was simple, yet cluttered; I could see a low table between the window and the couch which faced the window, on which there was only once occupant: a teenage boy dressed completely in black around the age of fifteen or sixteen. He was stretched out on the couch, reading a book. I took this chance and leapt at the bushes, diving into them and curling up inside the rough branches, facing the door. No sooner had I stopped moving did the cat I had frightened away earlier dart out from underneath the Subaru and practically slam into the door. I heard several mutterings and footsteps behind the door, then as the door opened, the teenage boy looked down only to see a large grey cat dart between his legs and into the house,

its fur puffed up in agitation. “What…?” I heard him mutter. He looked around, and I caught a strong whiff of the scent I had followed here. Was he the one I was after? The boy grumbled something incoherent and said loudly over his shoulder, “Hey. I’m going outside for a bit.” Before waiting for an answer from whoever was inside, he had shut the door behind him and stepped out into the night. I nearly forgot to breathe when he started in my direction, but he continued towards the back of the house towards a trampoline that I had not noticed before. He leapt onto the trampoline with such agility that I would not have expected of a human, and he sat down, crossing his legs, gazing up at the stars. I stayed in place for a moment, and then slowly and as silently as I could, crept through the bushes to get a little closer. But before I could settle, my back paw caught a rock, sending it flying against the chain link fence. I froze, mid-step as the boy’s head twisted in my direction. In the darkness, I could see him smile in a kind of arrogant way. “I know that you’re there… You should come out now.” He said. I stayed in place, pondering my options. If I were to flee, he would surely see that I was a Dragon. If I were to confront him… well, it was obvious that he was not what he appeared to be. I made my choice and stepped out of the bushes, raising myself to my height of 5 feet 8 inches. I stopped a few feet in front of the trampoline, my blue eyes gazing at him steadily. He turned slowly, his eyes taking in my appearance of blood-red scales, the way my black mane ran down my neck, my wings folded neatly at my sides, the spikes that started at my rump and ran down the lower part of my spine down to my tail, which ended in a light feathery fluff ball, and finally his eyes darted across my grey horns, talons and my muzzle, where rows of deadly sharp teeth were hidden. “Who are you and what are you doing here?” He asked, his voice strong, yet avoiding my gaze. I suppose he thought I would enchant him or something… I shook my mane out of my eyes, looking him straight in the face. Should I trust him? “I… am Charla. I am a Dragon.” I said, watching him closely. His scent was strange and overpowering. I couldn’t place it, but I knew I could trust him to a degree. The boy smirked slightly. “I’m no dumb ass. I know what you are. And you didn’t answer my question.” I narrowed my eyes. “You obviously are a dumb ass if you mock a Dragon.” I flicked my tail, the tip barely brushing the fence behind me. “I followed a strange scent here. I wanted to identify it.” He suddenly became defensive, “If you have come to take my power, I suggest you clear off!” He raised his right hand menacingly. I looked at it; he wore a silver ring on his fourth finger. I inhaled sharply, it held much energy. He was more powerful than I thought.

“I did not come for power; I just wanted to know what resided here.” I said, not taking my eyes off the ring. He lowered his hand, his eyes narrowed. “How do I know I can trust you?” I laughed softly, sitting back on my haunches. “Simple. I haven’t torched you yet, have I? No. I haven’t even let out a growl.” He still looked wary, but he said, in an undertone, “The scent you picked up, it was the scent of a demon. A wolf demon to be exact.” He looked at me, directly in the eyes this time, and I could see that his eyes were almost liquid gold. “Oh. I see… that’s why it was so familiar…” I said, looking at my paws in thought. I looked back at him after a few seconds, “What’s your name?” “Harlan.” He said. I smiled gently and got slowly to my paws again. He stiffened. “There’s nothing to fear.” I said softly, closing my eyes. I focused my energy on my shape-shifting ability, visualizing a human form. I heard Harlan let out his breath softly as a red glow surrounded me, only to disappear a moment later. He blinked, trying to conceal his stare. I smiled with human lips, my black hair falling down around my shoulders and around my tank top. I walked slowly over to him, my jeans rustling softly as I brushed against him so very lightly, my forehead coming up to his nose. I leaned upwards and whispered in his ear, “I do believe I have found you at last…”
