raq’s Taji Power Plant - which serves the greater Baghdad area - celebrates its first year of
successful operation producing electricity to help Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity (MOE) meet the
country’s urgent energy needs. The Iraq MOE commissioned the facility in 2012, located 20
kilometres northeast of Baghdad.
GE supplied four Frame 6B Gas Turbines for the Taji plant, which is curently generating enough
electricity to support about 160,000 households. GE has also supplied similar equipment for two
other power plants in Hilla and Karbala.
Altogether, GE supplied the Iraqi MOE with an additional 56 gas turbines for projects across
Iraq. These have added more than 7,000 megawatts of electricity to support the expansion of
the country’s energy infrastructure and help fuel future economic growth.
“The successful startup of Taji last year signalled the first step in fulfilling our continuous
commitment to bring much needed, reliable electricity to the people of Iraq,” His Excellency
Karim Aftan Aljumaily, Minister of Electricity, Iraq, told MEP. “This completed project marked an
important milestone in our ongoing relationship with GE. Teaming with GE, one of the world’s
leading suppliers of power generation technology and services, is a cornerstone of our strategy
to enhance and expand our energy infrastructure.”
“The Taji power plant project reflects the Iraqi government’s commitment to provide reliable
electricity to its people,” comments Joseph Anis, president and CEO, GE Energy in the Middle
East. ”Working closely with the Ministry of Electricity, we have been successful in executing on
our promise to deliver GE’s advanced technology to ensure that additional power is made
available to the Greater Baghdad area. This
successful one-year anniversary is a significant
moment for GE in Iraq and reinforces our
growing commitment to the country, where we
have been active for nearly 40 years.”
More than 1,100 GE Frame 6B Gas Turbines
are operating worldwide, and more than 170
units have been sold since 2006 - 75% of these
serve oil and gas and industrial applications.
More than 130 GE power turbines have been
installed in Iraq to date.
In addition to supplying equipment and
services for a wide range of new power plant
projects, GE continues to invest in Iraq and
increase its in-country presence. As part of its
plans for expansion in Iraq, GE has also opened
three offices in the cities of Baghdad, Basra
and Erbil.

n 2012, both units went into operation
in simple-cycle mode to help meet
Oman’s growing demand for electric
power.
Following steam turbine upgrades, both
plants have commenced commercial
operation in combined-cycle configuration
in April 2013 – in time to meet the peak
electricity demand during the hot Summer
months.
With their total electrical generating
capacity of 1.5 GW, these two plants
increase the Sultanate's current existing
capacity of circa 4.5 GW to approximately
6 GW.
A consortium led by the French utility
GDF SUEZ has bought the facilities. Al
Batinah Power Company is the owner of
Sohar 2 Power Station, while Al Suwadi
Power Company owns Barka 3. The two
plants will be operated by Suez-Tractebel
Operation and Maintenance Oman LLC
(STOMO).
Sohar 2 was built in the Sohar industrial
park approximately 200 kilometres north-
west of the nation's capital, Muscat, while
Barka 3 was erected in the immediate
vicinity of Muscat.
For each of these plants, Siemens
supplied the main components comprising
two SGT5-4000F gas turbines, one SST5-
5000 steam turbine, three SGen5-2000H

new CCPP Projects
generators, the electrical equipment and
the SPPA-T3000 instrumentation and
controls system.
The SGT5-4000F turbine is characterised
by high performance, low power
generating costs, long intervals between
major inspections and an easy-to-service
design, reports Siemens.
A spokesman told MEP: “Optimised flow
and cooling add up to the highest gas
turbine efficiency levels for the most
economical power generation in com-
bined-cycle applications.”
The SGT5-4000F is based on the SGT5-
2000E/SGT6-2000E, Siemen’s reliable
runners. These gas turbines are of proven
ruggedness, as attested by more than 380
machines sold and more than 8.8 million
cumulative operating hours.
The Siemens Power and Process
Automation T3000 (SPPA-T3000) system
has been designed to perform all power
plant automation tasks: turbine control,
boiler control including boiler protection,
balance of plant (BOP) and integration of
third party systems, such as gasification
islands in IGCC applications.
The consortium partner GS E&C supplied
the heat recovery steam generators and
was responsible for other scopes such as
the civil construction work, electrical
transformers and ancillary systems as well
as equipment installation.
Siemens has been active in Oman since
1974, playing an important part in many
of Oman's major power plant projects
over the past 40 years.
"As an EPC partner, our customers can
benefit from our expertise in integrating
the mechanical, electrical and chemical
processes of fossil fuel power plants,"
Lothar Balling, head of Gas Turbine Power
Plant Solutions at Siemens Energy's Fossil
Power Generation Division, tells MEP:
"At both Sohar 2 and Barka 3, we
succeeded on schedule in achieving
reliable technological excellence by
wedding quality in project planning and
project execution."

DISTRICT COOLING
T
his is certainly a chiller with a
difference. The UAE’s first
absorption chiller has the capacity
to change everything. For a start it can
reduce the Dubai-based corporation’s
energy consumption by over half a million
kWh every year.
Located on the rooftop of Dubal's
desalination plant control building, the
new chiller replaces previous electrically-
driven vapour compression air-condition-
ing chillers used for comfort cooling of
the building.
The new chiller has the capacity to
reduce the corporation's energy consump-
tion by approximately 626,800kWh per
year.
Tayeb Al Awadhi, Vice President of Power
& Desalination, tells MEP that the
absorption chiller uses high vacuum
conditions to lower the boiling point of
water to 3.7˚C (versus 100˚C at normal
atmospheric pressure) while leveraging
the chemical affinity of Lithium Bromide
(LiBR) to absorb water.
He says: "At this low temperature, highly
concentrate Lithium Bromide (LiBr)
absorbs the water vapour given off in the
Dubai: saving energy with
absorption chillers
boiling process very effectively.
“As the LiBr becomes dilute, its
capacity to absorb water vapour
reduces. A heat source is
required to re-concentrate the
LiBr - whether steam, flue gases
or even hot water. In DUBAL,
steam generated from waste
energy was utilised. Heating
causes the solution to release
the absorbed water vapour,
which is then cooled in a
separate chamber to become a
liquid refrigerant (in the form of
chilled water) through
condensation.”
He explains: “The process uses
just 40% of the electricity
consumed by the conventional
electrically-driven chillers and
uses a nominal 0.6 tonnes of
steam per hour to produce
sufficient cooling for the same
purpose."
Al Awadhi asserts that DUBAL's
new absorption chiller has the
capacity to reduce the DUBAL’s
energy consumption by
approximately 626,800 kWh per year.
Based on the standard conversion factor,
this equates to a reduction in CO2
generation by about 350 tonnes per year,
also equivalent to an estimated 180 cars
off the road per year.
"Installing this first absorption chiller
was a pilot project, targeted at
demonstrating the concept's ability to
save energy and protect the whole
environment," continues Al Awadhi.
"The concept can also be used for other
applications where energy-efficient
cooling is required - such as equipment
cooling."
DUBAL's absorption chiller was officially
inaugurated by Abdulla Kalban (President
and CEO) during a special ceremony on
27th March 2013.
Commenting on the project, Kalban says:
"This absorption chiller is expected to
reduce the auxiliary power consumption
of the DUBAL plant, thus offering broader
economic and environmental benefits to
the business. It will also add real value by
using readily available steam from our
Power and Desalination Plants without
compromising the processes of either."

odern companies such as
Flughafen München GmbH rely on
state-of-the-art products and
technologies which conform to the latest
standards in terms of climate and
environmental protection.
From the beginning, the company has
placed great emphasis on sustainability
and economic efficiency when it comes to
electric power.
This is also reflected in the airport's own
combined heat and power (CHP) plant,
which makes a significant contribution to
the avoidance of CO2 emissions and is
considered worldwide to be one of the
most economical and efficient plants in
its class.
The CHP plant, which came online when
the airport commenced operations, was
equipped with seven MWM diesel engines
of the TDBG441BV16 series with an output
of 1,580 kWel and around 1,800 kWth.
The reduction in carbon dioxide emissions
– compared to conventional electric
power – is put at 30,000 tons per year.
This is equivalent to the CO2 emissions of
20,000 passenger cars driving a total
distance of 10,000 per year.
This enables the total CO2 emissions of
the daily commuter traffic of 30,000
people who work at Munich Airport to be
offset. This high efficiency is made
possible by the cogeneration of heat and
electricity:
The heat generated by the electricity
production is not lost, instead it is used
for heating and cooling.
In the course of the airport expansion of
an additional terminal in the year 2002,
the energy control center was enlarged by
two CHP plants.
For this project, MWM delivered two
gensets with TCG632V16F engines which
went into operation in mid-2002.
More than a million hours operating
at Munich Airport
The units have an output of 3.7 MWel
each and approx. 4.6 MW thermal. This
means in total that the airport has
approx. 18.5 MW electrical and approx.
20.5 MW thermal output available.
The seven diesel engines are additionally
integrated into the airport's emergency
power supply system. Around 52% of the
electricity required by the airport and 72%
of the heat is generated by the combined
heat and power plants on site.
The airport's own combined heat and
power plant with the seven MWM diesel
gensets, delivers an output of 1,580 kWel
and approx.1,800 kWth.
The MWM Service Center Munich has
managed the system at the airport since
it was commissioned in the year 1992.
Given the close regional proximity to the
MWM Service Center and a customer-
specific service program, systems have
been running there fault-free for years,
providing the terminals with electrical
and thermal energy.
Working hand-in-hand with the
customer, the MWM Service Center in
Munich has been able to continuously
streamline service routines, among other
things, reducing lead times for major
overhauls by approx. 60%.
In 2000, FMG acquired a replacement
engine through the Service Center Munich,
in order to reduce down times during
large turnarounds from approximately
eight weeks down to three, thereby also
improving the efficiency of the entire
plant. The disassembled engine was then
overhauled on site and made available to
be swapped out with the next engine.
Since commissioning of the cogeneration
plant, MWM has been a consistent and
reliable partner who, thanks to its
competent employees, will always ensure
that passengers will never be grounded.
For Munich Airport, these measures
mean significantly higher availability of
the gensets. This is yet another reason for
the impressive number of 1,108,000
operating hours of all nine gensets.

Nine MWM gen-sets have been in operation for more than one million hours in Bavaria's major
air traffic hub - Munich Airport. And since its opening in 1992, the airport has worked in a
spirit of partnership with the MWM Service Centre in Munich, reports MEP.

STEAM TURBINES
T
he Yanbu 3 power and desalination
plant investment is part of Saudi
Arabia’s objective to expand its
power generation base while minimising
impact on the environment. The contract
is worth around €750 million.
Alstom’s part in the contract includes the
basic engineering of the power block,
advisory services during detailed
engineering and procurement, supervision
services during construction and
commissioning and delivery of main
equipment for 5 x 620 MW units.
The list of equipment including the steam
turbines and generators, the two HFO-
fired supercritical boilers, electrostatic
precipitators and the advanced flue gas
desulphurisation system.
The plant is expected to be fully
operational in 2016, accrdoing to current
projections.
Alstom will supply the equipment to the
Al-Toukhi Company for Industry, Trading &
Contracting, which is leading the
consortium in charge of the engineering,
procurement and construction (EPC) of
the plant for the Saline Water Conversion
Corporation (SWCC), one of the leading
power and water utilities in the region.
The project is of great significance for
SWCC and for Saudi Arabia in general. The
plant will produce 3100 MW power to
Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu 3
to get Alstom steam turbines
meet Saudi Arabia’s increasing electricity
demands as it will supply sweet water and
feed the grid in the western part of the
country where the cities of Jeddah, Yanbu
and the holy cities Mecca and Medinah are
located.
The balance power and extracted steam
will be fed into the associated new Yanbu
550’000 m3/d desalination plant which
will be a key supplier of water to the city
of Medinah.
“The Yanbu 3 project will add 2700 MW
of cleaner high-efficiency power to the
Saudi grid and steam to a new
desalination plant thanks to our market-
leading supercritical technology combined
with Alstom’s ability to integrate
equipment into complete and complex
power projects,” Andreas Lusch, the
Senior Vice President for Alstom’s steam
business told MEP’s George Ronayne in a
recent interview.
Alstom has equipped over 20% of Saudi
Arabia’s installed power generation base.
Its steam turbine technology also features
in Shoaiba – the region’s biggest power
plant and aptly called the ‘Giant of the
Middle East’.
Its environmental control systems in
operation at projects like Rabigh IPP,
Shoaiba 3 and Yanbu 2 are enabling the
country to reduce power plant emissions.

Alstom has been awarded a contract to supply equipment for the Yanbu 3 power & desalination
plant located on the Red Sea coast, in western Saudi Arabia. This will be one of the country’s
first supercritical power plants to run on heavy fuel oil, reports MEP’s George Ronayne.

S
audi Aramco is seeking to increase oil
production to one million barrels a
day and achieve a 5 – 6% increase in
gas extraction every year.
To reach these production levels Saudi
Aramco required a large-scale installation
of generator sets on site to be tendered
via main contractor, Samsung Engineering
Ltd.
The contract was secured in May 2011 by
the sole FG Wilson Dealer in Saudi Arabia,
Tamgo, and involved the supply of 128
generator sets ranging from 13 – 750 kVA.
The FG Wilson generator sets must
operate in extreme weather conditions,
including ambient temperatures of 55°C
and regular dust storms.
The FG Wilson generator sets are
providing power to the compound for the
residencies, offices and construction site
involved with the extraction of natural
gas.
Samsung Engineering Ltd also delivered
11 new gas-turbine generators and 44
compressors which will now generate an
additional 729MW of power at Shaybah.
This will power a new plant capable of
processing 2.4 billion cubic feet of gas per
day and 264,000 barrels of liquids
Gen-sets for Saudi
Arabia’s gas extraction facilities
destined for Saudi Arabia’s growing petro-
chemicals sector.
Responsible for the supply, delivery and
commissioning of the 128 generator sets,
Tamgo travelled over 1,200 km to the
operating site three to four times per
month to co-ordinate the project and
conduct ongoing maintenance and
servicing with the generator sets
operating in such harsh conditions.
Tamgo’s expertise and high customer
service levels has led to an ongoing
contract with Saudi
Aramco - it recently
increased its order
to 140 generator
sets in total.
Tamgo’s outstand-
ing commitment to
support & maintain
the installation of
the generator sets
since the project
began in 2011 has
led to a long-term
relationship with
Saudi Aramco. With
more orders on the horizon, this project is
due to be completed in 2016.
Islam Fathy, Product Manager at Tamgo,
comments: “We are pleased to say we
have designed, delivered and also
commissioned 140 generator sets on site
at present – all without a hitch.
“We are delighted to have forged a long
term relationship with Samsung
Engineering and Saudi Aramco which we
hope will continue long into the future.”
Mr Edward Jung, Cost Engineer of
Shaybah NGL Recovery & Utilities Project
(Package No.2) at Samsung Engineering,
comments: “Saudi Aramco had a large
project and needed a company that was
capable to install a quality, cost-effective
solution in complex weather conditions.
“FG Wilson and Tamgo have proven
expertise in delivering large scale projects
with success so we had no doubt they
would be the perfect partners to deliver
this project seamlessly.”
