WEEK OF FEBRUARY 15 TO 19, 2010
On Monday, the Middle School Classroom Without Walls (CWW) activities get underway. The teachers and students have been busily preparing, excitement has been building, and the time has finally arrived. As our students go off to various sites, we are confident that the students’ experiences will be memorable, leave a lasting impression and raise their awareness of how to become an active citizen. When your child returns from the trip, please take some time to engage your child and discuss ways that your child can build on the experience. We are now halfway through the third quarter. Progress reports for students receiving a C- or below will be distributed starting Monday, February 15. If you have any concerns, please contact your child’s teacher and continue to access PowerSchool to monitor your child’s progress. For parents of Grade 8 students there is a meeting regarding the Transition to High School on February 23 from 5:30 – 6:30 P.M. High School Guidance will be presenting useful information and we encourage you to attend. Please be reminded that there are no classes on Monday, February 22 in honor of the Edsa Revolution. Classes resume on Tuesday, February 23. Please note that the Parent Coffee on February 25 is being postponed until March 11. More details will follow. Looking ahead… Middle School students will begin course registration for school year 2010-2011 during the week of March 1st. Course Information and the registration process will be shared with the students on February 24th during Assembly time. Please talk to your child about elective choices for next school year. Activity Equipment
Activity equipment is available for borrowing during break and lunch. Your child has the opportunity to use the courtyard and equipment for physical activity. Equipment will be rotated for over the upcoming four weeks.
Middle School Photos If you purchased your child’s school photos, they are available for pick up in the MS Office.
Art & Music Convention: Housing Still Required
With under 3 weeks to go, we still require 40 housing slots to house the 160 visiting IASAS Art and Music delegates. If you have travelled to an IASAS event this year, it is your responsibility to house when we host IASAS events. Please get a housing form from the ATAC or Fine Arts office or print page 4 of this bulletin and return it ASAP.

IASAS ART & MUSIC HOST FAMILIES: If you have submitted a form agreeing to host for IASAS Art & Music THANK –YOU very much! You will receive an information letter including name of guests and pick up times etc on February 24-26th. Letters will be distributed via students so please ask your child if they have received/collected the housing information letter to be taken home. You will also receive a phone call Monday or Tuesday, March 1 or 2, to ensure the letter has reached you and for confirmation that everything is ok regards hosting. We still require more housing for this event. If you have ISM friends that are interested and can house some wonderful artists/musicians, please have them contact the ATAC or Fine Arts office ASAP for details. IASAS Art & Music Festival Housing Need
Dear ISM Parents, IASAS Art/Music Festival is fast approaching! March 37th! Please see sign up letter and information included in this bulletin. I would like to ask for your assistance with housing for a visiting IASAS Art/Music student. We require 160 housing placements for this event. If you have not housed before it is great chance to meet fantastic students from our IASAS schools. Requirements are listed to give you an idea of what is needed if you say yes. IASAS Art and Music Festival: Housing requirements/details: Housing needed from Wednesday night, 3rd March until Sunday morning, 7th March (4 nights). • A bed/futon/fold-out couch or comfortable place for guest to sleep. • Provide transportation to and from ISM each day. • Provide a breakfast each morning. • Provide one or two evening meals (Wed and Thursday most likely. Evening meals not required on Friday or Saturday. • Be at home in evenings (coaches will make curfew calls each night at 10pm to check students are at home). • Treat and welcome your guest as you would like your own child treated if they were attending an event at another IASAS school and being housed. If you can assist with housing visiting students please print out the letter attached, fill it in and return the slip to the ATAC or Fine Arts office. Please call/email Joan in ATAC office or Rochelle in the Fine Arts office if you have any further questions. In addition there will be a fantastic event for ISM community and lovers of the Fine Arts to attend on Friday, March 5th. The Art Exhibition opening in the FAT Gallery and then the Festival Concert in our FAT on Friday afternoon/evening will be a great showcase of all the hard work done by the IASAS participants. All art pieces from IASAS delegates will be on display for viewing prior to the festival concert featuring all IASAS Strings, Band, Piano and Vocal delegates under the direction of our visiting conductors. The high quality of artwork on display and the incredible musical talents of the IASAS participants will make for a great evening of arts and music at this year’s ISM Art & Music Cultural Convention. Tickets for this art exhibition/concert will go fast and will be available soon. More details to come in upcoming bulletins. I look forward to your support to make this a great ISM community event. IASAS ART EXHIBITION OPENING & FESTIVAL CONCERT On Friday, March 5
Dear ISM Community Members, The IASAS Art and Music Festival is fast approaching and planning is well underway for what will be a truly special ISM community event. The feature event of the 3-day festival of Art and Music is the Art Exhibition Opening and Festival Concert on Friday evening at the ISM Fine Arts Theatre. The Art exhibit is from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. in the Fine Arts Theatre Gallery and you will have the opportunity to view a wide range of art pieces and talk with the IASAS art delegates about their individual works and the motivation/inspiration behind the design and artistic process. Immediately following the art opening the doors will be open for the Festival Music Concert featuring the IASAS Music delegates from Band, Strings, Piano and Choir under the guidance of guest conductors, Mr. Jerry Luckhardt (band), Mr. Hernan Constantino (strings) and Mr. Joel Navarro (choir). ISM community members can get tickets for this event from the Fine Arts office, ATAC office or at the door on Friday, March 5th. Tickets are free and will go fast for this event so please get in early to your secure seats to what will be a memorable art and music experience of the highest quality. ISM families who are housing a visiting IASAS delegate will get 2 tickets when they receive their guest housing information the week leading up to the festival. Math Honors Testing
Dear Sixth and Seventh Grade Parents, Please be aware that during the week of February 23 – 26, your child will take part in placement testing for potential placement into Honors Mathematics. Every student will participate in this testing to help us determine their appropriate placement for next school year. The test that will be given is only part of the selection process. We will also consider the students’ ISM grade and teacher recommendation. The upcoming test is not one that students can study for. The test will assess two things. A student’s computational skills as well as their analytical thinking skills and their ability to extend mathematical ideas beyond the typical “drill” type of math problems will be assessed. The Middle School Math department works collaboratively and diligently to assess students and place them in a class that both challenges them and allows them the opportunity to succeed. It is important that all students are given a chance to succeed in Math. Honors level class is not for every student. There is no guarantee that a student will continue in an Honors class, even if they were in Honors the year before. Each student must test into an Honors class every school year, based on the criteria outlined above. The ES art department would like to request your assistance in the collection of recyclables to be used in art projects. Plastic bottles, caps, lids (plastic and metal), gift wrap, broken or unwanted toys, tins, small boxes, Styrofoam trays, packaging, ribbon, yarn, keys, broken tools and anything else you imagine we could make use of. Please ensure all donations are clean and safe. If you have any questions please refer them to [email protected] . Donations can be taken to room 1189 opposite the ES gym.
