Monitoring as a Service is the security, namely, of business networks and mobile networks through the internet for events, database, application, transaction and system incidents. Monitoring as a service has been becoming increasingly popular since 2007 with the rise of cloud computing and utility computing. Utility computing consumers sign up online and specify the services they want monitored, receive alerts via email, deploy automated responses, rules, correlation with other events as well as user generated reports by email or web. This avoids the need to implement a monitoring infrastructure (hardware and software) and allows them to consume the service on a utility computing basis based. Previously users needed to set up and maintain dedicated systems running software on premise. Monitoring as a Service is billed in actual elapsed CPU time rather than a large upfront investment or monthly subscription fee. Utility computing consumers pay for actual utility service consumption. For example, if the Monitoring as a Service system is used for 56 actual elased CPU seconds on Monday and not used for the rest of the month, the utility computing consumer is only charged for 56 seconds of service. The mission for Monitoring as a Service is to provided the utility computing consumer with high value computing services at an affordable cost. This will not only streamline the cost structure for the consumer industry but also for government and non profit organizations as well. For instance, medical institutions can access high value utility computing services on an as needed basis to save their customer money and life. Platforms supported for Monitoring as a Service are distributed i.e Windows, Unix and Linux, Cloud Computing, Mainframe i.e System Z and z/OS, and mobile networks. Protocols supported for Monitoring as a Service are SEMP (Simple Event Mangement Protocol), SOAP ( Simple Object Access Protocol ), SNMP (Simple Network Protocol) and HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) Monitoring as a Service for transactions leverage synthetic transaction and real-time usage monitoring based on actual usage from the transaction consumer. Synthetic transactions are developed and deployed to monitoring as a service the availability of transactions for end users before the consumer experiences performance and/or availability issues. Protocols for transaction monitoring include HTTP, HTTPS as well as application and system specific propiatary protocols. For example, web application that use HTTP or HTTPS. In addition synthetic transactions can be used for propiatary binary financial transaction protocols for response time and availability monitoring. Monitoring as a Service for applications require the deployment of a data collector for the collection of monitoring metrics. Also specific ports and firewall changes are set to enable access for the data collector to respond to the monitoring as a service utility computing provider. For instance, SEMP TCP port 9990 needs to be open for the monitoring server and data collector to communicate. Monitoring as a Service for security across cloud computing networks, IT networks and mobile networks is to identify incidents and security breeches across distributed infrastructures and ecosystems. Security for cloud computing prevents hackers to gain access to control of a large amount of servers and applications.

For instance, a virtualized cloud computing infrastructure with 100,000 server instances is required to prevent allowing control to hackers and to identify security threats initiated by hackers to gain access to management applications and servers as well as allowing hackers access to utility computing consumer services and applications. Monitoring as a Service for systems delivers monitoring metrics from components to monitor operating system specific information. Systems monitoring includes information to view the status of the hardware used by the operating system. Examples for metrics collected and monitored are CPU utilization, memory and disk.
