Tips of the week... how to
write a best-selling thriller
David Thomas, author of the Sam Carver
thrillers, offers his tips
● Before you begin, “study the masters”.
Read every good thriller you can find, and
use TV and films for inspiration, too.
● Structure is key. “I once drew a chart on
a couple of sheets of A2 that consisted of
a scene-by-scene analysis of The Day of
the Jackal.” It really helped illustrate the
“structural skeleton”: which characters
appeared when; the balance between
character development, plot and action.
● “Show, don’t tell.” My first novel
originally began with an explanation of
the modus operandi of my protagonist, an
assassin. My editor rightly told me to ditch
that, and open with a scene of him actually
carrying out an assassination. Much better.
● The first chapter has to be attentiongrabbing – if it’s not, the reader will give up.
● When you put your hero in a tricky
situation, give him two obvious options as
to what to do. “Then write option C.”
