Abigail Wagle 716 Life of Pi I think the reason we always see a great movie on movie night is because of me, but oh well. So anyway, it was movie night and I really wanted to see Life of Pi, but my dad did not want to because we had to buy it. We bought the movie and watched it, and I have to say, I once again chose a great one. Rarely, do you see a movie this amazing. To begin with, Life of Pi is based on a boy’s survival. In Life of Pi, there really is only one main character, Piscine Molitor Patel. Piscine goes by Pi because of something cool that happened in his childhood. His dad owns a zoo in India. One day, they have to move to New York so they take the whole zoo with them on a Japanese boat. During the night, a powerful and awesome storm wrecks the boat, and there are only a few survivors: a zebra, Orange Juice (the orangutan), a crazy hyena, Pi, and an adult Bengal tiger, but after a few days at sea, all that remains is Pi and Richard Parker, the tiger. You seldom see a movie with all these elements. Next, I think the movie’s main attractions are the wonderful animation and cinematography. During the Oscars, the viewing audience was asked if they could figure out which scene used a real tiger. Even with my whole family trying our very hardest, we really could not tell! The cinematography was also excellent. They made every color look brighter, such as the blue waves and green grass. Every little detail was absolutely perfect! Furthermore, this movie might have looked like a la-de-da story about animals, but it actually has a much deeper meaning. Even the names have special meaning, such as Richard Parker, the tiger. Richard Parker appears in two Edgar Allen Poe stories, one where Richard is

the cannibal and another where he is the one eaten. At the end of the movie, it is discovered that there are two versions to what Pi has experienced because he must recount his story. First, he tells one story with the animals (the one the movie viewer sees). In the second version he tells, Pi uses people being on the raft with him instead of animals. I believe that the one with the people is the real one, and that Pi created the animal story to hide the horrible facts of what he was doing to survive. This movie got me thinking for many days afterward, and not many movies are this deep. To conclude, rarely do you see a movie this amazing. I hope that all of my friends eventually see this movie. Life of Pi has such a deep meaning that you think about the movie for days afterward. “Not many people can have claimed to have survived a shipwreck for 227 days and to have done it in the company of an adult Bengal tiger,” but is this the truth?
