Letter from the Chair of the Board of Directors
January 21, 2015
Ladies and Gentlemen:
Welcome to the 6th Annual Broadband and Social Justice Summit. The Summit is the preeminent
national gathering of entrepreneurs, investors, lenders, regulators and legislators focused on
minority media, high tech, and telecom ownership, and closing the digital divide. It is a pleasure to
have each and every one of you here.
For twenty-eight years, you’ve known us as MMTC, the Minority Media and Telecommunications
Council. Today, we share with you an historic moment in the MMTC story as we change our name
to the Multicultural Media, Telecommunications and Internet Council. While our name is changing
to reflect the opportunities of a diverse, 21st Century digital economy, our acronym, like our mission
and our commitment to diversity and inclusion, remains the same.
Throughout the Conference you will hear about the many new and exciting policy initiatives
we have and will be undertaking to promote access to capital, universal broadband service,
competition and innovation. This year’s BBSJ 2015 Summit will wrap up with a special celebration
of the extraordinary leadership of MMTC’s Co-Founder, David Honig who after 28 years is passing
the baton to MMTC’s new President and CEO, Kim Keenan.
I would like to convey our deepest appreciation to all of our many sponsors, especially our Gold
Sponsors, BIA Kelsey, and Comcast; our Silver Sponsors, AT&T, and Verizon; and our Bronze
Sponsors, CTIA-The Wireless Association, Lerman Senter, NetCommunications, and SNL Kagan.
This Conference would not be possible without them.
Thanks, too, to our stellar Executive Committee, Board of Directors, Board of Advisors and Best
Minds Policy Committee for giving MMTC so much of themselves over the years. Thanks also to
our hard working and super-talented MMTC staff, led by our extraordinary new President and CEO,
Kim Keenan, Vice President and COO Maurita Coley, Vice President/Research and Policy Dr. Nicol
Turner-Lee, and President Emeritus David Honig.
Since we were founded in 1986, MMTC has done its very best to advance the interests of
minorities in media, telecom and broadband policy debates and decisions in Washington, DC.
This is profoundly difficult and challenging work for an organization with limited human and fiscal
resources. Your support and participation are much needed and always appreciated.
I hope you have a great Conference and thank you for joining us.
Sincerely,

Julia L. Johnson

Welcome Letter from President and CEO
January 21, 2015
Greetings!
Welcome to the Sixth Annual Broadband and Social Justice Summit. This year’s Summit
establishes a new chapter in MMTC’s legacy. Today, we share with you our big announcement
that, effective today, the Minority Media and Telecommunications Council will become the
Multicultural Media, Telecom, and Internet Council (MMTC). This change aligns our name with
our goals and mission and our future in an increasingly diverse digital economy. So while our
name will change, our acronym and our commitment to diversity and entrepreneurship in media,
telecommunications, and technology will stay the same.
For BBSJ 2015, we have once again assembled law and policymakers, thought leaders, and
diverse entrepreneurs and professionals to engage you in game-changing discussions and debates
with the goal of developing an action plan that will ensure universal first class digital citizenship and
ownership diversity in the communications industries.
Over the next two intensive days, we will focus on:

Creating opportunities to improve diversity and inclusion in multicultural media and
telecom ownership and updating the Telecommunications Act to promote diverse
ownership and consumer interests;

Establishing and sharing best practices to achieve multicultural digital equality, to
stimulate economic opportunity, create jobs, generate wealth, and prime the pipeline for
careers in all facets of the communications industry; and

Highlighting MMTC’s commitment to training and mentoring next-generation leaders,
lawyers and entrepreneurs.

We will close the Summit with a special tribute to the work of MMTC’s Co-Founder and President of
28 years, David Honig, who has assumed the role of President Emeritus of MMTC. David Honig’s
unflinching dedication and service to social justice and equality is both inspiring, and humbling.
Everyone at MMTC is dedicated to building on the strong foundation that David has built as we
shape the future of broadband and social justice.
Thanks so much for your support as we work together to achieve net equality.

Let’s Act Now to Close the Digital Divide

Multicultural Media, Telecom and Internet Council’s
6th Annual Broadband and Social Justice Summit
Our Future in Pursuit of Multicultural Digital Equality

The Multicultural Media, Telecom and Internet Council’s Sixth Annual Broadband and Social Justice Summit will convene hundreds
of media and telecom industry experts, policymakers, innovators, investors, and entrepreneurs to highlight the most far-reaching
issues affecting minority entrepreneurs and underserved communities.
At the Summit, current and former FCC officials, members of Congress, and nonprofit and industry leaders will address how
to improve diversity in the ownership of media and telecom assets in Silicon Valley and beyond, remove education and health
disparities through technology, preserve an open Internet, close the digital divide, and improve the images of people of color in
all media. In particular, experts will discuss how the process of achieving multicultural digital equality can stimulate economic
opportunity, create jobs, generate wealth, and prime the pipeline for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
(STEM).
As MMTC celebrates its 28th year, this year’s Summit will also highlight MMTC’s new leadership, future plans to improve digital
equity and ownership, and plans to deepen MMTC’s commitment to training and mentoring next-generation leaders, lawyers,
advocates, and entrepreneurs.
The Summit will wrap up with a celebration of the extraordinary leadership of MMTC Co-Founder David Honig, who after 28 years
is passing the baton to MMTC’s new President and CEO, Kim Keenan. In David’s honor, attendees are asked to join us in a special
reception and roast of his leadership.
