ROBOLUTION….
DEXTERING ROBOTIX…

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 01 APRIL, 2012

ROBOLUTION :
REVOLUTION!!
“Robolution, dextering robotix..”…. The Robolution Team was formed back in 2008 by an extremely dedicated group of three friends Somit srivastava, Azhar Saba , and Prashant Dutt Misra, of 2006 batch (the trio popularly known as SAP, in the true sense). The legacy further carried by Adarsh Agarwal and Prateek Puri, has been instrumental in encouraging the young and innovative minds of BIT to take the next step in the field of robotics. With the determination, shear diligence and unmatchable passion of all our seniors, the Robolution team finally emerged as an independent club in 2011. Since the formation of the club, incessant efforts have been made to arouse interest amongst the students of the institute in the fascinating field of Robotics. The enthusiasm shown by the students has also been remarkable and highly encouraging. Robolution ,as a club , took its first step in September 2011 , by conducting a basic robotics workshop ,where the new kids on the block were helped with the fundamentals of electronics and machines. The 3 day workshop helped the students develop a basic understanding of the

elementary steps of robotics and moreover cultivate a seed of exploring interest in their hearts. In association with the ECE Soc, BIT Mesra , Robolution conducted a 3 day workshop in December on “Digital Image Processing and Robotics through MATLAB”. The workshop saw overwhelming response and the participation exceeded expectations. The workshop demonstrated how MATLAB could be used as an extremely effective tool in the field of Robotics and Digital Image Processing and was a rich learning experience for everyone. Later in February a week long workshop was organized by Robolution. It began with a few sessions on basic robotics demonstrating the making of a line follower and moved on to cover more advanced concepts like the atmega 16 microcontroller and analog to digital converters. The students were also taught the application of mobile phones in the control of Robots. The workshop finally concluded having triggered a lot of hunger in the robotic inquisitive minds of the students.

At bottom, robotics is about us. It is the discipline of emulating our lives, of wondering how we work.

“BITOTSAV 2012 : POP GOES THE CULTURE…!!”

ROBOLUTION organised four robotics events namely Stalker Bot, Wall-E, Bot 54, Robot‟s Got talent in BITOTSAV‟12 which witnessed a huge participation of more than 50 teams from 2k10 and 2k11 batches. From the detection of metallic scrap hidden in a pile of wastes to processing images from the camera feeds for traversing the arena, from building innovative robots with the ability to entertain to making a robot which could follow a line and cross a tunnel, every problem statement was a novelty in itself. We appreciate the effort put in by all our participants. And to the winners who cleared every hurdle with brilliant colours, we congratulate you most heartily and hope that you will continue your winning streak in the years to come.

GUEST LECTURE
BY PROF. S.K. SAHA , IIT DELHI
FEBRUARY 2012 BITOTSAV‟12

textbook “Introduction to Robotics” is one of the most popular and widely read books of the subject. Professor Saha has also been the guide of the famous Robocon Team at IIT Delhi for the past 8 years. The guest lecture was divided in two segments. To begin with Dr. Saha had an informal interaction with the students present. The robotic enthusiasts of the college irrespective of their branch and year took full advantage of this golden opportunity and asked numerous questions ranging from the basics of robotics to the more complex and specific problems faced in the real world environment. Sir vehemently answered each one of the questions with ease and to every one‟s satisfaction. In the second part of the lecture Professor Saha presented before the gathering two of his path breaking projects which have been a real stepping stone in application of Robotics in day to day life. “Robotic Competition Based Education in Engineering ” popularly known as ROC-BEE is a lecture series based on a very innovative methodology and is accompanied by a book of the same name. Methodology vastly involves practical hands-on of the concepts so that we can have a better understanding of the subject. The lecture has been delivered as many as 39 times since 2007. He also talked about the lecture series MuDRA or Multibody Dynamics for Rural Application where he promotes innovative research by converting rural problems into research topics. All in all it was an extremely enriching experience for everyone. Not only did Professor Saha bless us with his technical expertise on the subject but was also phenomenal in motivating young minds towards innovation in the field of Robotics.

Bitotsav 2012 saw Robolution,BIT Mesra reach newer heights. The college was bestowed upon with the presence of one of the most distinguished personalities in the field of Robotics. The pioneer himself Dr. S.K. Saha. Professor Saha graduated from Regional Engineering College, Durgapur (now known as NIT) in 1983 as a mechanical engineer. He went on to complete his masters from IIT Kharagpur and then attended McGill University Canada for his Ph.D. Thereafter he worked in the R&D center of Toshiba‟s Corporation in Japan. After returning to India in 1996 Professor Saha joined IIT Delhi and has been instrumental in his efforts towards simplifying the science behind robotics. He is accredited with the establishment of Mechatronics Lab in IIT Delhi in 2011.His

ROBOCON....

THE ASIA-PACIFIC ROBOT CONTEST (ABU ROBOCON)
The Asia-Pacific Robot Contest (ABU ROBOCON) is an Asian Oceanian College robot competition, founded in 2002 by Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union. In the competition robots compete to complete a task within a set period of time. The contest aims to create friendship among young people with similar interests who will lead their countries in the 21
st

century, as well as help

advance engineering and broadcasting technologies in the region.

WE ARE THERE TO HELP YOU!!

Each year the competition has different topics, but generally speaking three or more robots must be used to complete the tasks. To build the robots, contestants, who are restricted to be undergraduate students, must possess rich knowledge in programming, mechanical design and electronic circuit design.

SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME. You can send your own articles too. Mail us at [email protected]

A team of 30 members for participation in ROBOCON 2013 is to be formed. Apply as soon as possible.
