Discourage Do-It-Yourself Inspections
When unprepared homeowners start poking around in the septic tank, bad things can happen.
Tell them to call a professional. By Jim Kneiszel, Editor

I

’m pretty handy around the house. I’ll swap out the sump pump in the
basement. I have a table saw and use it to build birdhouses, simple furniture and the like. In the garage I perform minor maintenance on my
vehicles, like oil changes, installing a new starter motor, etc.
But while I consider myself a handyman, I hope I’m smart enough to
know when to leave a home improvement or maintenance project to the
professionals. One of those jobs would be inspecting the septic system.
Like me, you probably scratch your head and wonder why in the world a
homeowner would think to undertake a septic inspection or repair. We know
it’s dirty and unpleasant work. We know it can be dangerous duty working
around electricity and water, as well as dealing with toxic fumes. We know it
can take years of experience to effectively diagnose a failing septic system.

INVITATION TO DISASTER
Despite the many impediments, we still hear about an occasional do-ityourselfer who gets in over his head (literally) trying to repair a septic system
and needs to be bailed out (again, literally) by his friendly neighborhood
pumping professional.
At the same time, the home handyman is also being encouraged to take
inspections into his own hands by folks who ought to know better, some
state and county health department officials.
The trend from health departments for some time has been to combat
the threat of groundwater pollution by requiring homeowners to adhere to
mandatory periodic septic system inspections. This is wise and prudent. Every pumper I know can tell horror stories about encountering septic tanks
that haven’t been maintained in 20, 30 or even more years. It’s high time that
routine maintenance is required for septic systems in every corner of this
great land.
But to temper the outrage some homeowners may feel over paying for
septic pumping, some governments are choosing to let folks be in charge of
inspecting their own systems and reporting the condition. Hmm, where can
that plan go haywire?
LUCKY TO BE ALIVE
Ripped from the headlines, let’s look at a recent story out of Plympton, Massachusetts, involving a man rescued from his septic tank after he
fell in while attempting to make his own repair. According to several news
accounts, the man was screaming for help while standing inside his tank,
waist-deep in septage.
“He had been doing a small repair on his own. He was one of the people
who lived in the residence,” said local fire chief, Warren Borsari, whose technical rescue team saved the man. “He was standing on a stepladder inside of

the tank and the stepladder broke and he fell right into it.’’
The man suffered minor injuries, but it could have been worse, the chief
said. As we know, even a qualified technician doesn’t climb into a septic
tank without confined-space gear for fear of being overcome by hydrogen
sulfide gas.
“He was scared, absolutely, and he could have been intoxicated also,
but because he was in compromised atmosphere and a lack of oxygen, it
could have been all of the above that was causing him problems,” Borsari
told reporters.
$15 SEPTIC TRAINING COURSE
With that story in mind, you tell me if empowering homeowners to do
their own inspections seems like a good idea. I’ve written about Washington
state homeowner septic service training courses in the past. Most recently, Clark County, Washington, is offering a $15, three-hour class to certify
homeowners to inspect their own onsite systems. For many reasons, this
doesn’t seem like the best idea.
In Licking County, Ohio, officials are going to require inspections every three years to identify neglected and failing systems with the potential
to pollute groundwater and spread disease. Sounds like a good plan. But
some folks are claiming the inspections could “undermine local control,”
“negatively impact property rights,” and hurt senior citizens living on a fixed
income.
To appease homeowners who don’t value the clean, safe water argument, officials hinted that, perhaps, inspections could be performed by
homeowners who receive training.
If, like me, you are questioning the effectiveness of do-it-yourself inspections, consider an interesting provision in the Clark County program:
Homeowners can only perform every other required three-year inspection.
Presumably the next inspection will have to be done by a “more qualified”
person, such as a septic service professional. That tells me officials don’t
have confidence in the ability of homeowners to perform an adequate in(continued)

spection or they cannot be trusted to report on the condition of their own
systems.
From my perspective, those concerns are well founded.
First of all, homeowners taking a $15 course can’t be expected to have
the same background and knowledge as a septic service professional with
many years of field experience. We all know the vast majority of homeowners are not equipped to diagnose the effectiveness of their septic systems.
They are not really interested in understanding their systems but are motivated by the idea of saving a few dollars. Why would officials entrusted to
protect the water supply and the environment settle for inspections of questionable value?
Secondly, shouldn’t all inspections be performed by an impartial observer? Septic service professionals can be counted on to give a full and accurate appraisal of the condition of a septic system. A homeowner with a
mindset to spend as little as possible on wastewater treatment might choose
not to mention a problem that could trigger extensive repairs or replacement. I’m not saying this will happen, but there’s room to believe it could
in some cases.
WE CARE
As an industry, we must encourage homeowners to protect their systems and their health through routine septic system inspections performed
by trained professionals. When you talk to customers or local government
officials, explain why maintaining septic systems should not be a project for
the weekend handyman. You’re looking out for the safety of homeowners
and to protect the environment.
The last thing we want is to hear about another homeowner standing
waist-deep in septage and calling for help. ■

Septic Service and restroom provider
Spot-A-Pot take a tag team approach to

T

he story behind Big Muddy Septic Service in Mandan, North Dakota,
is similar to many new businesses. An entrepreneur sees a need and
decides he can fill it, provide effective service and make a good living. But Big Muddy’s story is also about a little guy working with a big company in a win-win situation. And how one business leads to another and
another, until customers have a one-stop shop for fuel, septic and grease
trap service, and portable restrooms.
Kirt Pelster started Big Muddy just four years ago when he realized
that he didn’t have to work in the nearby Bakken oilfield to benefit from it.
Because of the draw of workers to the oil industry, there was a big demand
for services in communities in central and southwestern North Dakota.

Below: The Big Muddy Septic crew includes,

Theurer and Shane Leingang.

And it didn’t take Pelster long to figure out he could capitalize on his
experience and opportunities within the company he worked for, Missouri
Valley Petroleum (MVP).
CoNNeCTiNG THe DoTS
The business opportunity started like this: Pelster needed his home’s
septic tank pumped, and it took several days before businesses he called got
back to him. Something clicked in his brain. Most pumpers are owner/operator businesses and they were having a hard time keeping up with demand.
“I recognized there was a need for professional services – someone who
would call people back,” he says.
Pelster was working for MVP, managing a propane division, and ran his
business evenings and weekends. He learned as much about septic service
as he could from a friend with a pumping business in western North Dakota
and bought his first truck, a 1994 International.
Pelster picked up customers with cold calls and offered a coupon along
with other businesses as part of a direct mailing that targeted local homeowners. For his next marketing promotion, Pelster approached his supervisor and one of the MVP owners, asking to insert an informational note and
$25-off coupon with the 1,200 billing invoices MVP sends out every month.
“That gave customers faith in me because they knew and trusted MVP,
which has been in business since 1946,” Pelster says.
Business boomed. Pelster was putting in 80-hour weeks between his
job and his business. The long hours took a toll on his personal life. To find
balance, he approached MVP Vice President Jim Froelich about partnering
with MVP.
The pairing made sense. People who need propane bottles filled typically also have septic systems that need to be maintained. MVP has human
resources and accounting staff to take care of office and paperwork.
“We approached it from the standpoint that MVP could offer the broader depth and management as well as the resources he needed to grow,” Froelich says.
“Once we joined with MVP (November 2013), the septic business went
crazy,” Pelster says. A year later Big Muddy had 10 times the business it had

Mitch Bitz filled in the last connected service – portable sanitation – in

As partners with a large operator,
Pelster and Bitz have access to additional capital to add and upgrade their equipment.
Bitz owned a 2007 Ford F-450 with a 2012 Progress Tank slide-in unit
with a 540-gallon waste/260-gallon freshwater aluminum tank and Conde
pump (Westmoor Ltd.). With a liftgate, he could haul up to four portable restrooms as well. When he joined the partnership, Bitz had 60 PolyPortables
Integra restrooms. Today he has 180 restrooms from PolyPortables and two
PolyPortables Tag-Along hand-wash stations. The company uses PolyPortables chemical products.

says, despite 795,000 miles on the odometer. But its 1,800-gallon steel tank
isn’t as efficient for long hauls as the newer trucks with bigger tanks. A 2008
Mack has a 5,000-gallon Imperial Industries steel tank and Jurop/Chandler
pump. It is the main truck for septic service and is also used for pumping at
oilfield worker camps, RVs at campgrounds and grease traps.
A 2006 Sterling with a Keith Huber 3,300-gallon hazardous material
tank has a full-opening rear door and a two-stage hoist. It works well for
pumping car wash and shop pits.
Another equipment investment important for endurance in rugged
North Dakota is the 100 percent rubber hose from VARCo that is on all the
trucks, Pelster says. Also, the company markets Bio-Tab septic additive from
Century Chemical Corp. to customers.

Grease duty
Pumping grease is a lucrative part of the business at the Mandan, North
Dakota-based company Big Muddy Septic Service, says founder Kirt Pelster.
Restaurants and other businesses throughout central and southwest North
Dakota often have a hard time finding pumpers.
“The downside is the smell is horrible,” Pelster says, and business owners
don’t like pumpers to show up during regular hours. “We coordinate with the
business to service their location at a suitable time for them.”
Because of Bismarck, North Dakota’s FOG (fats, oil and grease) program,
many businesses are on a regular schedule — once a month for a chain
of grocery stores, every two months for fast-food restaurants, for example.
Timing is based on crust and sludge level reports required by the state.
Pumping grease is also growing in western North Dakota, because service
businesses there have taken on more oilfield work. Every new business that
opens in the region presents a potential new customer for Pelster. He notes
that he is fortunate to work in a region that still has ample capacity and
reasonable rates for grease disposal. But Pelster and Mitch Bitz, owner of
portable sanitation company Spot-A-Pot, take nothing for granted and work
closely with treatment plant and landfill operators.
“The relationship with Bismarck is based on trust,” Bitz says. “So we
won’t bring in the wrong material, and we also do some work for the City of
Bismarck.”

eMPloYee relATioNS
Under the joint venture, Pelster and Bitz also gained help with the hiring of two employees. They receive the same health and retirement benefits
as MVP’s 200 employees and participate in MVP’s monthly safety
meetings.
The relationship with their
two employees is good, Pelster
says, because he and Bitz have
both done the work, and still do it
on occasion. “We’ve never asked
them to do something we wouldn’t
do ourselves,” Pelster says.
At the same time, the drivers
are held to quality standards to act
professionally and to spend time
with customers and educate them
about their septic systems. Drivers take care of the trucks as if they were their
own. The men are cross-trained to pump tanks and take care of the portable
restroom side of the business.
Employees also receive bonuses as an incentive for selling MVP services or products to new customers. Pelster manages Big Muddy along with
his new role at MVP in sales, coordinating combination sales of all the company’s services.
“We can help new homeowners get a septic tank put in, provide temporary heat and portable restrooms during construction, and propane to heat
the house,” Pelster says.

Pelster anticipates Big Muddy will
be running six trucks within a few years.
— Kirt Pelster Bitz expects Spot-A-Pot will grow to offer 500 restrooms and run six trucks
with four or five employees. The projections are due to growth in the communities they serve and a couple small competitors having gone out of business.
“The health department is cracking down on land application with
more regulations and paperwork, and it’s getting harder to be a one-person
owner/operator,” Pelster says.
Big Muddy and Spot-A-Pot take septage and portable sanitation waste
to the Bismarck waste treatment plant and do some work for the city. The
pumpers have 24-hour access to the plant, and rates are reasonable com(continued)

pared to other areas. Pelster adds that Bismarck’s landfill accepts grease,
which is about 25 percent of Big Muddy’s work.
Maintaining a good relationship with the city and taking care of customers is the first priority. Once that is in place, oilfields may be the next
market. However, there are plenty of other opportunities for expansion with
MVP’s diverse services.
To be more efficient, the septic pumping and portable restroom businesses are investing in RouteOptix software technology, which includes
reading bar codes on portable restrooms, mapping routes and tracking employees and equipment.
CDL drivers are in short supply; many are oilfield contractors. The
pumping contractors are looking for ways to work with non-CDL drivers.
One way they’re doing that now is by purchasing a Ring-O-Matic vacuum
trailer that can be pulled behind a pickup and transported by any technician
with a driver’s license.
Regardless of where the future takes them, the entrepreneurs emphasize the importance of dependable service.
“The reason we have been so successful is that when we tell people
what we are going to do, we do it,” Pelster says. “They know we will answer
the phone 24/7.” ■

What is Bio-Tab®?
Bio-Tab® is a highly concentrated tablet of bacteria (both aerobic and
anaerobic) and enzymes that acts as a biological activator for septic tanks.
In short, Bio-Tab® helps septic systems work like they were intended.
Unlike most competitor’s dusty powders or messy liquids, Bio-Tab® is in a
tablet form. Easy to use and easy to store, Bio-Tab® is highly concentrated
(one jar contains a year’s supply). It is a safe, non-toxic, non-corrosive and
non-poisonous product that will not harm plumbing or septic systems.

14 Tips for Building
Employee Satisfaction

Help your crew realize career goals, have a voice in important decisions and feel valued by managers
By Timothy F. Bednarz

A

leader’s primary function is to help employees develop a strong belief
in the mission of the company and the importance of their individual jobs. The leader’s secondary function is to ensure optimal results
from the tasks given to employees. Excellent results spring from methods of
motivation that help employees feel successful and increase their efforts to
achieve goals and improve performance.
By motivating each employee to perform at his or her maximum level of
efficiency, leaders also maximize their own success. And as leaders motivate
their staff, they not only help the company gain financially but also develop
personal relationships with their employees.
Much research in behavioral science has focused on the factors contributing to workplace motivation. Many studies indicate the strongest factors are based on individual self-determined needs. Aware of these factors,
a manager can foster improvements in employee attitudes, their desire to
excel and their feelings of success. Leaders need to apply these methods
to effectively stimulate their team as a whole and the individuals within it.
Once done, employees will reach peak performance, free from slowdowns
and negative influences.
Methods that are positive motivators for some employees don’t always
work for others. Each individual is driven by specific needs that determine
his or her performance. If specific needs are not met, it inhibits the employee’s desire to accept new challenges and delegated opportunities.
Here are 14 methods – focusing on individual needs and desires – leaders can use to motivate employees:

1. Help employees see their dedicated and consistent efforts being a
part of advancing their future with the company.
2. Take time to give employees deserved praise and meaningful recognition. However, use this method in moderation, otherwise it becomes
meaningless. Praise must always be specifically related to performance rather than vague comments like “You’re doing OK.”
3. Provide employees with goal-oriented job descriptions. This method
charts a course for them with specific actions they should accomplish to
achieve positive results.
4. Give each employee the opportunity to achieve. Even small tasks can
build success. Any taste of achievement is a great motivator.
5. Aid employees in determining personal goals. Leaders should link
these to the overall goals of the company.
6. Help employees acquire and maintain a spirit of achievement. Careful planning and organization of tasks directed at meaningful results can accomplish this goal.
7. Help employees set and achieve personal self-improvement goals.
These need to be realistic and achievable for individuals to grow and develop skills.
8. Acknowledge employees’ accomplishments to reinforce that they are
valuable and important – a key need for individuals.
9. Tell employees how and why they are performing valuable work. This
means giving them useful feedback about their progress with a focus on personal productivity and how to increase performance.
10. Listen with interest to employees’ problems, ideas, suggestions and
grievances. Even if they seem trivial or irrelevant, these things are important
to the employee.
11. Never neglect or ignore an employee. Failure to provide individual
attention is one of the worst mistakes leaders can make in terms of motivating or supervising staff.
12. Enact a personal commitment to a vision or direction. Effective
leaders show employees how to give personal effort and provide consistent
performance to align themselves with the company’s vision.
13. Help employees develop an increased sense of responsibility. Accepting responsibility facilitates feelings of success and a greater sense of
self-worth.
14. Relieve the boredom where possible. This makes work more meaningful for employees and allows them to attain greater job satisfaction. It also
builds inward security and fosters self-motivation. ■

Federal EPA Has Authority to Set
Chesapeake Bay Cleanup Standards
By Doug Day

A

federal appeals court in July upheld the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency’s authority to set the Total Maximum Daily Load
for Chesapeake Bay through the Clean Water Act. After 30 years of
trying to stem pollution entering the bay, the EPA worked with six states in
the watershed to set pollution targets divided among nonpoint sources such
as stormwater, septic systems and agriculture. Established five years ago, the
targets are phased in through 2025. The bay cleanup plan was challenged
by agricultural and industry groups, along with 21 state attorneys general
that filed friend-of-the-court briefs supporting the plaintiffs. Environmental
groups and municipal wastewater agencies sided with the EPA.
The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia upheld a lower
court ruling that the EPA action was appropriate under the Clean Water Act.
The Chesapeake Bay agreement applies to Delaware, Maryland, New York,
Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Vermont
Eight of 13 people filling new water-quality positions in the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation come from the program that regulates onsite wastewater. Commissioner David Mears says the push for water
quality has led to cuts elsewhere in his department, so the department will
rely more on contractors and system installers to make sure systems are operating correctly. He says the larger need is dealing with polluted stormwater
runoff, but added that there are no “easy choices” when resources are tight.
Idaho
The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality is considering proposed changes to onsite wastewater regulations after a month-long public
comment period. DEQ says revisions to the Technical Guidance Manual for
Individual and Subsurface Sewage Disposal Systems will address engineering
requirements for public systems, in-trench sand filters, using the method of
72 to determine effective soil depths, capping fill systems, at-grade soil absorption systems, gravelless system products and a revision to the installer
register permit rule. The proposed changes are available at DEQ’s website,
www.deq.idaho.gov.
Minnesota
Legislative action in Minnesota is resulting in changes to regulations
affecting onsite wastewater professionals. Those who fail to meet continuing education requirements will now be able to apply for a one-year extension from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. During that conditional
extension period, they will be able to make up any missed training and retake up to two exams. The Legislature defined building sanitation systems
connected to septic systems as both plumbing and septic components, and
changed the bonding requirements for onsite professionals to match those
of the plumbing program. The changes are designed to streamline the license application and renewal process and create flexibility for onsite professionals. MPCA will be issuing specific instructions and fact sheets on the
changes in the future.
Missouri
A property developer has been sued by the Missouri attorney general
for selling lots he said had approved onsite septic systems when they did not.
The suit filed last summer accuses the developer of installing holding tanks
rather than operating wastewater treatment systems in violation of state
water and consumer protection laws, and then charging people to have the
holding tanks pumped. People who bought lots from the developer had to
pay to have approved septic systems installed. The lawsuit seeks restitution
for the homeowners and an order prohibiting future sales of lots in the
subdivision. ■

Amthor Matador Flat Vac tank can hold up to 2,000 gallons and haul up to 12 units for delivery By Craig Mandli

A

mthor International has been manufacturing the Matador Flat Vac
portable restroom truck for several years, but customer feedback
at the Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport
(WWETT) Show has given Butch Amthor keen insight on design improvements. Several of those updates were on display with the Matador Flat Vac
model on the 2015 WWETT Show exhibit floor.
“The biggest change this year is the rounded-bottom tank with a fulllength formed sump design for drainage,” says Amthor, the company’s executive vice president. “All waste material flows to the center, which virtually
makes the tank self-cleaning.”
The Matador Flat Vac serves as a multipurpose vehicle for portable restroom operators, as it carries six (on the 12-foot model) to 12 restrooms (on
the 20-foot model) on top of the tank, as well as pulls a restroom delivery
trailer. The vacuum tank includes full baffles every 24 inches transversely
and longitudinally for strength, with separate wastewater and freshwater
compartments as well as an option for a chemical or brine compartment.
“Your typical portable restroom service truck will have a carrier on
the back for two units, while this unit carries up to 12 and is still compact
enough to fit into tight areas for special event servicing,” says Amthor. “Being
able to deliver units and service them with the same truck is both cost- and
time-efficient.”
Tanks are available in 800 to 2,000-gallon capacities, with a standard
4-inch waste valve and 2-inch water valve, and 2-inch pressure-relief valve.
It is available in 1/4-inch steel, 1/4-inch stainless steel or 5/16-inch aluminum, and comes with a workstation and a vertical cabinet and an extruded
aluminum door with integrated shelving. There are 2-inch sight glasses for
the waste compartment and a sight tube for the water compartment. A liftgate is installed behind the tank to load and unload restrooms. It has an out-

“It is easy to load and unload units with
the liftgate as well. It’s a unit made for one-person operation if needed.”
Amthor says the 2015 model of the Matador Flat Vac is the result of several years of feedback, much of it coming on the WWETT Show floor. “That’s
how we learn what works and what doesn’t in this industry,” he says. “The
rounded trough design came directly from customer feedback. They wanted
something that was easier to clean, and we listened.”
Amthor points out that his company’s goal is to debut a new product at
every WWETT Show, and he promises 2016 will be no different, though he
doesn’t want to get into specifics.
“A lot of the decision will come down to what we hear on the floor
here,” he said during the 2015 show. “I’m always thinking about something
new or a way to innovate something we already have. And this show is always the one we aim for. It’s the biggest in the industry.” 800/328-6633;

For three generations, Rhode Island
Septic Services has utilized vastly
improving onsite technology to provide

amily-owned Rhode Island Septic Services (RISS) has seen three
generations of boom and bust economic cycles since the company was founded in 1954. Owner and president Mike Sliney
is weathering tough economic times in the state by diversifying his
business into related construction services and the transportation
and disposal of municipal sludge, and exploring new avenues for advertising, including radio.

American Ingenuity, American Made
A Lesson Learned
In 1958, a young Army Specialist at Fort Sam
Houston, TX built a wooden, portable restroom. He
didn’t like latrines and figured nobody else did
either.
Al Hilde became quite good at building wooden
restrooms, using them to create a very successful
portable restroom business. However, he was
always looking for a strong, lightweight alternative.

Along the way, one of the Tufways fell out of the
pick-up as it sped down the highway. It hit the
pavement hard, but when he picked it back up, the
only damage was a few scratches. He loaded it back
on the truck and headed to his appointment.

The breakthrough happened in 1972 when Al
ventured into plastics and built a Tufway, his first
polyethylene portable restroom.

When showing the operator the Tufways, he
apologized for the scratches on one of the
restrooms. When the operator heard what
happened, he bought both Tufways and placed an
order for 20 more. He said if a portable restroom
could withstand a fall like that and only have a few
scratches, he wanted a whole fleet of them.

An operator in Nevada heard about the Tufway and
wanted to be the first to see it. So, Al’s sales
manager loaded two Tufways into his pick-up truck
and headed west.

We also discovered the value of a Tufway that day
and it reminds us that to be successful, we need to
rely on ingenuity and quality. That’s why Tufways are
still designed and made...in America.

RISS is located in Exeter, about 25 miles south of Providence and a
stone’s throw west of Narragansett Bay. The company offers septic service all
over Rhode Island and parts of Connecticut. It also offers septic system design and installation, large and small excavation services and construction
work.
The company was established as Rhode Island Cesspool Cleaners Inc.
by Sliney’s grandfather, Francis. “They built the classic cesspool, which involved excavating a hole, loading a dump truck with field stone and having
a stoneworker line the pit with stone,” recalls Sliney. “They soon moved into
more modern septic systems.”

Mike Sliney’s father, John, and uncle, Steve, had worked for the company since they’d been teens, eventually taking over. Mike and his brother,
John, followed suit, buying out their uncle in the early 1990s and taking over
entirely when John Sr. passed away in 1995.

J & M operates six trucks – five Macks and an International – outfitted
with unbranded 9,000-gallon aluminum tanks bought secondhand and customized for the company’s specific use.
Sliney’s equipment strategy is to keep the fleet updated to promote better reliability. “We have some older trucks in the fleet, so adding a new one
will make it easier on our mechanic and make scheduling a little less like a
rat race,” he says.

Servicing, repairing and upgrading septic systems, both residential and
commercial, provide the bulk of the company’s work. Septic systems remain
common in the state. Despite a state-imposed phase-out of traditional cesspools begun in 2007, many remain legal.

Good workers are a key to success
Finding qualified employees has always been a challenge for Rhode
Island Septic Services (RISS), but that task has become far more challenging
in recent years.
“It starts right at the interview,”
says Mike Sliney, company owner
and president. “Recently I’ve been
checking the qualifications of every
applicant because too many of them
have falsified information, including
job experience they never had.”
Sliney says a few checks
and balances exist to ensure he
has qualified drivers for his rigs,
something he believes is important

reputation. Once a year his insurance

Department of Transportation random drug and alcohol screening, which
helps limit liability.
“Because our trucks are hauling so much weight, we feel it’s important to
do whatever we can to promote safety,” Sliney says.
Sliney has good things to say about his seasoned employees, including
his office staff – wife, Cathy, and Melissa Titzmann, who has been with the
company a dozen years. “They do a great job on anything from bookkeeping
to handling sales calls to dispatch,” he says.
Mechanic Charlie Anctil has been with the company for 25 years and
keeps machines for both RISS and sister company J & M Transfer in top shape.
“A good mechanic is an asset to any company, and Charlie is incredible,”
says Sliney. “He just did a motor job for me and he can rip apart a transmission,
do brake jobs and oil changes, and fix air leaks. At 60 years old, he can work
most 25-year-olds under the table. When some of the new hires walk past the
garage and see him working, I think the competition worries them a little.”

Despite the lingering use of cesspools, Sliney says today’s systems are
being engineered far better than in the past. The components and technologies available to installers do a good job of treating waste and preventing
sediments from reaching the drainfield. The advances are great for the installing industry and the customer, he says.
“Compared to 30 years ago, systems are much better designed today,”
Sliney says. “Soil scientists determine high water tables. Two-compartment
septic tanks and filters ensure cleaner effluent. Watertight lids prevent infiltration, and use of lids and risers bring access to the ground level and promote better tank maintenance.”
Sliney holds a Class I Designer’s License with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, which authorizes him to design repairs or improvements to existing onsite wastewater treatment systems with
a flow of less than or equal to 900 gpd. However, it doesn’t allow him to design systems for new construction.
“You’ve not only got to earn education credits needed to design for repair systems, you also need to maintain that classification with additional
annual education credits,” says Sliney. “I can handle the eight annual educational credits required to maintain my Class I, but anything higher is too
time-consuming to make business sense for us. We’re already way too busy
on repairs and building systems for clients according to designs we’re given.”

CoNSTrUCTioN WorK
Sliney’s construction business complements his septic work for new
building projects. Crews already on the work site to install a septic system
can also clear lots, dig foundations and complete most construction-related
site work, including installing drain, water and electrical service lines. Owning the equipment also allows him
to bid on installing larger commercial septic systems.
The company’s construction garage houses three
excavators, a 1997 Kobelco SK200, a 2007 Hitachi Zaxis 135 and a 2012 Takeuchi mini; a 1998 Komatsu D31
dozer; a 2003 John Deere 310 backhoe; a 2008 Volvo L70E front-end loader; and a 2003 10-wheel MAC dump
trailer.
RISS also cleans grease traps, largely for fast-food
chains in the area. Again, RISS crews are often required
to perform additional work to satisfy local regulations.
“In some towns we have to do paperwork each time we
do a job, so the restaurants can prove to the town that
they’re keeping up with maintenance,” says Sliney.
Winter is the toughest season for the business, cutting into both septic and construction work. “When the ground freezes and the snow piles up

Like most service businesses, word-of-mouth is Sliney’s top calling
card, followed by the company website. He’s reduced his investment in
phone book advertising, which is no longer drawing the response it used
to. He recently signed an advertising contract with a local FM radio station.
“Our company will be mentioned as a sponsor for various programs
and we’ll be doing 15-second and 30-second spots that will eventually grow
to as long as 90 seconds,” he says. “The ads will concentrate on the idea that
we’re a family-owned pumping business. We believe that for any increase in
business on the septic side, excavation work will follow.”

Focus on Advertising
and Marketing That Pays Off

Figure out what’s bringing in the business, and quit wasting time and money on efforts that aren’t By Erik Gunn

hether you’re starting up a brand-new business or you’ve been at
it for years, you probably already have the skills of your trade and
the tools you need.
But how good are you, really, at advertising and marketing what you do?
Yes, some people seem to be born with the knack for selling and promoting themselves. Maybe that’s what makes advertising and marketing
seem like one of those “black box” parts of a business. There’s no shortage
of advice out there, but putting it to effective use and figuring out whether it

benefits of good service, you can’t ignore it, either. Customers who like your
work will talk you up with their friends and give you advertising you never
paid for – and with a value that’s priceless.

COMMUNICATE WITH CUSTOMERS
When it comes to measuring the cost and value, think big picture. “The
true value of marketing depends on what sort of marketing you are investing in,” says Scandlen. “If you invest in marketing that has value for the customer, then the true, long-term returns will be significant.”
Scott recommends that with the growing power of consumer-review
sites like Angie’s List and Yelp, you must “own your brand on the Internet.”

Reach out to prospects who don’t already have a relationship with a
business in your line of work. “People who moved to a new house are unlikely to have an established relationship with a local plumber or septic contractor,” Prosser points out.
Master the techniques that raise your profile when people search the
Internet for the services you offer. Send a mailing to newly occupied addresses, or if your target market is businesses, “you can check out new member lists at local chambers of commerce and reach out to those businesses.”
IS IT WORKING?
And how do you figure out the value and the cost of what you’re doing?
You can’t measure the cost or benefit of making sure your crews show
up on time and treat customers with respect, or the benefit of visibility. But
with good marketing and advertising, as Nakagawa points out, “customers
and prospects can find you even if you are busy supervising a job or buried
in paperwork.”
But you don’t want to simply throw money at the problem. Effective
marketing doesn’t require big budgets, Nakagawa says. “Do small trials and
see what works for you. Once you find an effective approach, build on it and
don’t get distracted by the next new and exciting marketing tactic.”
Still, there are metrics you can gather. Three that Scott of Lifefyre finds
most valuable are measuring the customer acquisition cost (CAC), average
contract/sale value (ACV) and return on marketing investment (RoMI).
The cost of a particular advertising channel will vary widely by the
source of your traffic, notes Jan Roos, who consults for local businesses on
effective Internet advertising. Roos recommends starting with a $1,000 per
channel investment — and look for fast results. “The best channels can turn

58

Pumper • November 2015

around customers in days to weeks,” she says.
She recommends programs like Google Adwords that bring your business up when the prospective customer does a search: “You can get in front
of customers at the exact moment they need something like a drain cleaning plumber instead of throwing up a billboard and hoping they remember
your number.”
TRACKING LEADS
To really understand the cost and value you’re getting, you’ll have to
invest in systems that track your calls and emails from customers. With that
you know “where customers are coming from and use this to determine
which sources of advertising are bringing the most bang for your buck,”
says Roos. (That works with offline advertising too, she adds.) Without good
tracking, “you’re flying blind.”
Roos says lead-generation specialists can help you generate business
more efficiently from your online advertising. And while free channels may
have some value, don’t count on them to directly generate business. If Facebook or Twitter suck five hours a week out of your time that you would otherwise be able to bill $100 an hour for, “you’re out $2,000 a month for that
channel,” Roos points out. “You might be better off throwing a $1,000 budget
on paid advertising that is guaranteed to get an audience.”
One final word: Don’t treat marketing and advertising as an afterthought or a sometime thing.
“Consistency is the key,” Nakagawa says. “Doing marketing and advertising once, or only when things are slow, will not help your cause.” ■

Tech Tips for Diluting
Pharmaceuticals in Wastewater

Trace amounts of chemicals – the byproduct of prescription medicine usage – can linger in onsite systems.
Septic service best practices can help solve this groundwater issue. By Jim Anderson, Ph.D.
QUESTION: How well do our systems treat pharmaceuticals and other
contaminants?
ANSWER: I hear this question often during workshops, and it will be
a continuing issue of concern for the industry. Pharmaceuticals are regarded as contaminants of emerging concern from both an environmental
and human health perspective. Research has been limited on these compounds due to their trace levels – in the low parts per billion. Treatment for
the compounds in wastewater treatment plants is very costly even though
there are available technologies such as ozonation, reverse osmosis and
process optimization.
Each compound is an entity with a particular organic structure, which
means it is almost impossible to generalize levels of treatment or how long
they exist in our particular environments. Recently a number of studies were
commissioned to look at these contaminants in wastewater treatment plants
because these compounds have been found in surface water and in fish below the outfalls from the plants. So there is a continuing environmental and
health concern over the effects of long-term low-level contamination. I expect we will see continuing reports on the results of various studies and, in
particular, some specifically looking at our onsite treatment systems.
I have seen a few studies that may give us a clue to the treatment effectiveness within our soil-based treatment systems. First was a study of sand
filters and constructed wetlands (both technologies used in decentralized
systems). For ibuprofen and some other organic pharmaceuticals studied,
a drain and fill operation of the subsurface wetlands significantly enhanced
the elimination of the compounds over the continuous flow operation. This
increase in treatment was attributed to allowing oxygen into the system,
which stimulated biological activity and led to the breakdown and dissipation of the compounds. The study also noted that the presence of higher
aquatic plants also enhanced the treatment of the compounds.
Another study looked at land application of biosolids in eastern Colorado. Here they found that some of the compounds dissipated after six months
from the time of application, while others persisted longer than 18 months
and some moved downward in the soil profile even given the semiarid environment. After a year and a half, though, most detects were actually below
the minimum reporting levels for the compounds. The compounds they degrade to are not fully understood and the authors conclude further research
should be conducted on the transformations occurring, taking a closer look
at any long-term accumulation.
I also remember University of Illinois studies in the late 1980s looking

60

Pumper • November 2015

at organic pesticides in septic systems. They showed pesticides were tied up
in the organic material from wastewater and soil in the highly biologically
active zone where they slowly degraded.
While we are bound to hear more in the coming months about these
compounds and issues, the best onsite practices we employ should effectively tie up these compounds and hold them in place while they degrade
or dissipate.
Practices like keeping the systems as shallow as possible should be put
in place, utilizing parts of the soil profile with the highest biological activity
and usually the most permeable to water and air. This allows oxygen to be in
the soil around the system, allowing aerobic soil organisms to function and
assist in the breakdown of organic compounds. This should sound like the
KISS (Keep it Shallow …) principle. Nevertheless, just more evidence that
keeping systems shallow is the way to go even if it means having to add a
pump into the system.
The other aspect to shallow is it maximizes the separation distance in
a biologically active zone so if some compounds do move somewhat downward, they are not out of the zone where treatment can occur.
Employing dosing of our systems through pressure distribution –
whether it is in pretreatment devices such as media filters or the final soil
treatment system – again provides the opportunity to tie up the compounds
until they are dissipated. This approach has been demonstrated to help
make sure water movement through the soil is unsaturated and allows for
oxygen to be present in the system – both major ingredients in the wetland
study that resulted in the best treatment.
This furthers the argument that undisturbed natural soil is the best final
treatment media. This means that the soil should not be disturbed, graded,
compacted, smeared or otherwise compromised before, during or after the
installation of the final soil treatment unit. If this sounds suspiciously like
KINN (Keep it Natural …), that’s because it is!
For years we have talked about these two underlying principles as being key to quality, long-lasting systems that treat our wastewater indefinitely. Study after study confirms the value of these principles, yet I still see
instances where these simple guidelines are violated with the predictable
bad results. When we do our jobs right and install our systems correctly,
we have the best treatment system possible and better than any wastewater
treatment plant. When we don’t do things properly, we get a bad name and
people look away from us as being part of the wastewater solution and see
us as part of the problem. Let’s demonstrate that we are the solution for the
future, regardless of the compounds or the problems encountered. ■

Building It Back In Bama

Alabama wastewater professionals re-energize their state association, promote training,
certification and volunteer work By Doug Day

A

fter a few years of belt tightening, the Alabama Onsite Wastewater
Association is poised for growth. Formed 28 years ago, it is bringing back some programs that were dropped following the economic
downturn and its subsequent toll on the onsite industry.
Dave Roll has been the group’s executive director for 13 years. He
had little experience in the wastewater industry when he started, but has
watched it change and mature over the years. After a 29-year career as an Air
Force pilot and Air War College faculty member teaching Strategy, Doctrine
and Leadership, he had been working part time at AOWA for about a year
when his predecessor left and the position was offered to him.

Whom does AOWA represent?
Roll: You have to hold a license in Alabama to
be a voting member. The bulk of our members are
installers and pumpers. Then we have portable restroom companies and licensed manufacturers. Membership is by company, so we have about 175 members that represent many more individuals.
There are a few companies that are bigger than
eight or 10 people, some portable restroom companies may have 50 or 60, but most of our membership

cerned folks in the industry who used to get together
at a restaurant. From there they formed the Alabama Septic Tank Association
and in 2000 pushed through legislation to require licensing of onsite professionals. That created the Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board, and the group
changed its name to the Alabama Onsite Wastewater Association in 2000.
What effect did the recession have on you?
Roll: We used to get 40 to 45 exhibitors at our annual conference – our
members were doing well financially. We are inextricably tied to the housing
industry and it fell flat. The number of licensees went from about 1,450 down
to below 1,000. The number of exhibitors has almost been cut in half.
There are fixed costs for an association that don’t go down, so we
tightened our belt. We used to give away $1,000 scholarships to students
of families from member companies for college, vocational, technical or
trade school. We also had a legal assistance program. If someone needed
business-related legal advice, we had an attorney we paid for providing a
consultation. We had to discontinue both of them in 2012.
We have recovered sufficiently and are seriously looking to reinstitute
our scholarship program. I’m looking for an attorney with knowledge of the
onsite industry so we can provide that service again. We are making a concerted effort to increase our membership. The more members we have, the
more powerful we are.

Do you offer anything besides your annual conference?
Roll: We partnered with the Alabama Department of Public Health
(ADPH) in February for a mini trade show and conference. This was the
brainchild of Sherry Bradley, the director of Environmental Services at
ADPH. We reached out to our members, those with state onsite wastewater
licenses, engineers and regulators, and put them in one place at one time. It
was a splendid conference with 275 attendees.
It took a little bit away from our annual conference. Normally we get
about 260 people; this year we didn’t break 200. But it was probably very well
worth it. ADPH would like to hold the conference again next year depending
on funding.
What do you see as the value of such gatherings?
Roll: I always invite our new members, even if they don’t need their
continuing education, and tell them to talk to the exhibitors. You can get a
wealth of knowledge that you can’t
get out of a book or through online
education. It also creates a bond

that waste. I’d like to say
we’re making progress
but I don’t think we are.
Frankly, I don’t
know how you fix it.

How is your training done?
Roll: Our association has contracted with the University of West
Alabama and one of their faculty
members, Allen Tartt, for all our
classes. We have a training facility
at the university with systems in the
ground and components to touch
and feel. It has been a wonderful
arrangement that adds academic

credibility to everything we do.
Installers, pumpers, manufacturers and portable restroom operators must have initial training and annual continuing education. Allen
puts together the classes, schedules the speakers and teaches many of the
classes. I think we have a pretty well-educated group of licensees because of
that arrangement.
What are the hot topics in Alabama right now?
Roll: There’s always the issue of what do we do with grease. Where do
you off-load it without driving 150 miles and who can process it? Some municipalities will only take grease from within their borders. They are quick to
encourage the restaurants to build, but they’re not so quick to build facilities

Pulling together to help those in need
Alabama still has pockets of abject poverty, especially across the Black
Belt region where the dark, fertile soil is great for cotton but not so much
for conventional onsite wastewater systems. Despite years of effort, there
is still a big need for government and private assistance across the 13
counties of the region that rank as among the poorest in the nation. Many
homes have no sewage treatment system, and about half of those that
exist are failing because of soil conditions. A septic system could cost more
than many people’s homes.
The Alabama Onsite Wastewater Association has installed about
150 onsite treatment systems across the state over the years. “We get
donations from suppliers and manufacturers and volunteer labor from our
members, and install or repair systems at no cost,” says Executive Director
Dave Roll.
Doing six to eight projects a year, however, just doesn’t make a dent in
the problem. “We could put in one a day for the next 10 years,” says Roll.
“We’re talking about thousands of people, but it’s a good program that
helps families.”
It’s not just for the poor. One recent project was for a wounded veteran
who is paralyzed from the chest down. Actor Gary Sinise’s Restoring
Independence Supporting Empowerment (RISE) organization built the
soldier a customized home to fit his needs.
Tony Woodard and his son, Andy, of Economy Septic Tank, installed
the septic system that was donated. “He has a wonderful house to live
in,” says Roll. “It’s computer-operated, so from his wheelchair he can
open doors and cabinets, shelves come down to his level. It’s magnificent,
and we were able to help out thanks to the donations we received.”

to handle that waste. I’d like to say we’re making progress but I don’t think
we are. Frankly, I don’t know how you fix it.
Looking ahead, what do you see for the state’s onsite industry?
Roll: It depends on what happens with the housing industry. All it
would take is the housing industry rebounding and many of our problems
would go away. My hope is that our good folks can get back to work and
make a decent living. ■

Make Grease a Gateway
to Pumping Profits

Look for new customers with commercial kitchens, then offer grease trap cleaning and other services
to build more revenue onto every invoice By Ken Wysocky

G

rease Masters LLC, based in St. Charles, Missouri, a suburb of St.
Louis, lives up to its name. The company collects about 1.1 million
gallons of grease a year, mostly from restaurants and commercial
kitchens, and also recycles cooking oil (yellow grease) to generate an
additional revenue stream.
Owned by John and Pam Remstedt, the company also cleans municipal
sewer lines, provides back-of-house restaurant services (such as cleaning
exhaust hoods and inspecting and maintaining fire-suppression systems) and offers
industrial cleaning and power-washing services. About
90 percent of the company’s
revenues come from greaserelated operations.
Pumpers interested in
diversifying their services
should take notice of the company’s success in cleaning grease traps. From John Remstedt is shown
its first year in business in 2006 to 2010, Grease with his newest truck,
purchased at the WWETT

Grease Masters was featured in a 2011 contractor profile in Pumper. We caught up with Remstedt to get advice
for pumpers interested in expanding their grease-related
services.

You’d be
surprised how
many companies have

nowadays. And unless
they have maintenance

are not cleaning
their grease traps.
– John Remstedt

Pumper: Why should septic pumpers consider getting into
cleaning grease traps?
Remstedt: Because they can
generate an additional revenue
source with almost all of the same
equipment (vacuum trucks and
water jetters). The key is the ability
to dispose of grease cost-effectively. We’re lucky because we pay only
7 1/2 cents per gallon, and both the
local municipal waste treatment
plant and a private treatment company that we also use accept just
about anything – even grease mixed
with septage – without requiring
pretreatment to neutralize it.

Pumper: How do you train technicians to clean grease traps?
Remstedt: Our guys spend a minimum of two weeks job-shadowing a
veteran employee before they go off on their own. They have to learn how to
operate a water jetter because instead of manually scraping grease traps clean,
we use a jetter to clean the tank as well as the outgoing channels and baffles.
We’ve found that pressure washers speed things up and break up the grease.

We emphasize making sure the outgoing line is clear on outside traps.
Overlooking that is a very common mistake … because technicians are in a
hurry. They clean the trap itself but don’t take extra care to remove the access
cap to the outgoing line that takes effluent to the sewer line. We also stress
the importance of making sure the grease traps are sealed and any manhole
covers are put back on properly, so the odors don’t go back into the kitchen.
We also train them to keep their tools and trucks clean. This is one of
the dirtiest jobs out there. If the trucks are clean and in working order, it’s a
better experience for the customer and the employee.
Pumper: How important is it to educate customers about grease traps?
Remstedt: It’s very important. In fact, it’s almost more important to
educate customers than employees. Customers usually think that if they don’t
use a fryer, they don’t have grease. But day in and day out, there are fats and
oils that come from everyday cooking – things such as mayonnaise, salad
dressings, starches, eggs and milk – even coffee grounds. It all adds up. We
remind them that they need to scrape those things into a trash can, not put
them down a drain. Just because it looks like it’s going away doesn’t mean it is.
Pumper: Are there under-the-radar grease trap customers you should
look for?
Remstedt: Definitely. Schools, churches, hospitals, nursing homes,
VFWs and any kind of club or organization – anyone who operates a commercial kitchen. You’d be surprised how many companies have commercial
kitchens nowadays. And unless they have maintenance guys on it, most of
them are not cleaning their grease traps. We’ve encountered school districts
with 20 or 30 schools and each one has a grease trap and they don’t even
know they have grease traps. You’d be surprised how many businesses don’t
know they have a grease trap.

In fact, many fast-food restaurants don’t realize they have two-chamber
grease traps, and sometimes the second one is covered by asphalt or concrete. They think we don’t need to get into the second chamber, and even
if we do, we can get there through the first chamber. But a hose won’t fit
through the pipe that connects the two chambers. So what we have to do is
get a jackhammer and then install a riser on the second chamber. We run
into that a couple of times a year.
Pumper: What additional services can you offer grease trap customers?
Remstedt: Grease trap customers often need sewer and drain cleaning services. It’s a great ancillary service because you can clean storm drains
with the same truck you use to clean grease traps. Why tell a customer to call
another guy for drain cleaning work when you can do it yourself? Sanitary
lines need regular maintenance, too. We have a water jetter on all our pump
trucks. The more things you can do for a customer, the more they think just
about you and nobody else.
Pumper: Why did you decide to use a private company for grease disposal?
Remstedt: We take almost all our waste to Merrell Brothers Inc. because it’s cheaper than taking it to the municipal treatment center. Their
rates are now just a quarter of a cent cheaper than the municipal rate, but
that still saves us about $52,000 a year. And both plants are within a mile of
each other, so there’s virtually no difference in transportation costs.
Pumper: How did you get into recycling cooking oil?
Remstedt: We began doing it about three years ago because we discovered we were missing out on a huge market. We started losing accounts
to competitors who were cleaning grease traps and recycling cooking oil.
So you always have to listen to your customers and understand that even if
you’re providing them with excellent service, you need to adjust and adapt if
you find out you’re not giving them everything they need.
There’s good money in cooking oil. You typically lock in customers to
a three-year cooking oil agreement, which essentially pays for the storage
containers. They’re usually 100 to 300 gallons in capacity, cost about $500
and are made of steel. We figure it takes three years to get your money back.
The yellow grease is used to make biofuel. You either have to pay the
customers for the yellow grease or discount your other services in exchange
for the grease. The market fluctuates daily, but we usually sell it for 17 to 34
cents a pound, and there are 8 pounds in a gallon. We thought it would be
a little easier to break into this market. … We’re doing OK but would like to
have more customers. We usually collect one week a month, using one of our
4,000-gallon pump trucks.
Pumper: You’re a WWETT Show regular. How do you benefit from attending?
Remstedt: At the last three shows, we bought four trucks: a Vac-Con
combination vacuum truck, used for municipal cleaning work that we started doing about three years ago; a Satellite Industries vacuum truck, used for
pumping out grease traps; and two jetting trucks made by US Jetting and
BCE Cleaning Systems and used for cleaning kitchen exhaust hoods and
sewer lines. The Satellite pump truck allowed us to put an older pump truck
on backup status, plus we use it just for collecting yellow grease.
The newer trucks help us improve productivity and profitability. For
example, the Vac-Con truck probably boosted our gross revenues by 15
percent annually. And before this we had just one jetting truck, which was
used mostly for cleaning grease traps. That meant our full-time plumber and
drain cleaner always had to wait to get a jetter truck. Now we can do two
jetting jobs at the same time, which probably boosts our annual gross sales
by about another 5 percent. ■

Overheard Online

What Are the Keys
to Customer Service?

The septic contractors with the biggest profit
margins and the most loyal customers do whatever
it takes to fix problems
This feature in Pumper reports noteworthy conversations that take place
at the Pumper Discussion Forum, an online forum for industry professionals
found at www.pumper.com. Pumper Discussion enables exchange of
information and ideas on septic and drainfield installation and maintenance,
trucks and equipment, portable sanitation, chemical and additives and
much more. Information and advice in “Overheard Online” is offered in good
faith by industry professionals. However, readers should consult in depth
with appropriate industry sources before applying such advice to a specific
business situation.

Question: some septic service companies won’t snake lines, leaving the

homeowners still clogged. usually customers hire whomever is available or
cheapest, but then they need someone else to finish the job. What do you
charge for digging up the inlet cover? How about snaking outside? snaking
inside and preventing a spill dilemma? At what point do you say, “Get a
plumber to pop the toilet off?” Do you do a toilet-auger?

AnsWeRs: I have picked up many new customers over the years because
they hired the cheapest company they could find to pump the tank. I got a
call later the same day from them because they were still backing up. I found
out the other pumping company had cleaned the tank using the easy cover
to get at and had not bothered even looking under the inlet cover. Many
times it was a matter of taking the inlet cover off and pushing a bar down
through the clogged inlet baffle. Sometimes I would take a garden hose, turn
it on, and run it back into the house until the clog let go.
If I could not access the pipe using a cover outside, I would often get a
job changing the access so that I could get at the pipe from outside. I used
to remove plugs in the cellar, remove toilets, or even go down through the
roof vent if possible. If you take the pipe apart in the cellar and make a mess,
the homeowner will probably never call you again. If it is only a matter of
sticking a bar through a clogged baffle and it all comes flying out, and you
do not even charge him, you will have a customer for life. I usually do not
charge for digging if I do the whole job in an hour or less. I talk a lot of people
into raising the cover or only covering it with a material like mulch. This does
a good job of marking the tank location, making it easy to access for service.
◆ ◆ ◆
We do not dig/uncover lids for customers. Is this something most other
companies do? We have been in business for 20 years in the same area with

76

Pumper • November 2015

no competition. We have always asked our customers to have the tank lids
accessible (dug up, lid loosened, etc.). Other companies that (for example)
fill propane tanks, etc., expect the tank area to be accessible and ready
for the service. I am surprised that so many pumpers dig out lids. Do you
charge extra?
◆ ◆ ◆
We always dig up lids. Pennsylvania code is that lids must be within 12
inches of grade. I will dig to 6 inches below grade. Any deeper than that and
I add a digging charge and also sell them on a riser.
◆ ◆ ◆
The contractors who help people will always make a minimum of triple
the guy that just pumps tanks. The smart businessperson is not in the septic
pumping business. He or she is in the customer service business.
Customers are willing to pay a full service company that doesn’t mind
digging the tank up. The same goes for unstopping inlet pipes. We make
as much unstopping inlet pipes as we do pumping tanks. These same
customers buy enzymes, root treatment, have friends and family they give
referrals to for people that actually help them. What it really comes down to
is what you want your business to be known for and just how much money
you want to make. If you want to make enough to get by, you can just pump
tanks. But if you would like to actually be helpful and make more money
than you could ever imagine in this business, all you have to do is whatever
it takes to solve your customers’ problems!
Taking care of a customer’s problem makes you their hero for the day! I
charge a premium and do not hide that fact. My customers know what they
are going to spend before I do anything. I am the most expensive by far
in my area – I miss a lot of jobs at first because of that, but after the cheap
guys can’t or won’t fix their problem, I get the chance to make them my
customer forever.
◆ ◆ ◆
We live in a very remote area, and the majority of our work is industrial
septic pumping (at mines, mills, etc.) and portable restroom rentals for
construction. Very little of our business is residential septic tank pumping.
Last summer we started handing out info packages to customers on how
to better care for their systems and most of them joked about it, refused it,
or threw it out in front of our drivers (I’m serious!). The customers we tend
to deal with really just do not care. The calls we get from these people are
when the septic is already backing up in their house, despite our reminder
cards and calls.
I believe in total customer satisfaction as well; however, I want to be
paid for any additional work we do. It’s disappointing as owners with a lot of
enthusiasm and pride in our business that our customers don’t want to learn
about their systems or how to care for them properly. We would offer any
service possible to please our customers, but if they aren’t interested, we’re
not going to do it for free. ■

NAWT Vacuum Truck Training
Planned for the WWETT Show
By Dhru Bhatt

A

re you interested in attending the National Association of Wastewater
Technicians’ vacuum truck or inspector training course during
the WWETT Show Feb. 17-20, 2016, in Indianapolis? We have
incorporated both of these educational sessions into the curriculum of the
WWETT Show to offer them to a wider audience.

tanks. This will be followed by a presentation by Bob Wright and Kim Seipp
on troubleshooting systems. Frank Parker will conclude the educational
session with a discussion on inspecting drip systems.
Additional details regarding these and other WWETT Show educational
sessions can be found online at www.wwettshow.com or www.nawt.org.

Vacuum truck training course
The goal of the vacuum truck training course is that at the conclusion
of the session participants should be able to recognize trucks and their
associated equipment, understand the equipment’s function, understand
the vocabulary of pumping, how to apply safety principles, how to operate
the equipment safely, recognize materials they will encounter and some
they may have to avoid, recognize how their job is regulated by government,
and how to speak to customers with confidence.

2016 naWt HapcHuk scHolarsHip
The deadline for the 2016 NAWT Hapchuk Scholarship must be received
or postmarked by Jan. 1, 2016, to be considered. The scholarship application
has been posted at NAWT’s website at http://www.nawt.org/documents/
ScholarshipApplication2016.pdf.
The 2016 Hapchuk Scholarship assignment is as follows:

naWt educational day sessions
NAWT’s educational day lineup consists of two presentations given
by Tom Cianci of Alderon Industries. His first session will be on the basic
operation of electrical panels, and his second presentation will be on how
to use the information available from the panels to troubleshoot systems.
Claude Goguen, of National Precast Concrete Association, will also
be presenting. His topic will be what to look for when inspecting concrete

Option one
Build a short story around the two photographs (found at the NAWT
website). A homeowner is meeting with the septic professional to discuss
why his system is not working properly as indicated by a floating manhole
riser. The story should explain why the system may have gotten that way and
what will need to be done.
The short story should reference websites or articles where the information
can be found. You can change or enhance the photos and be creative about
how the story is told. The story can be no more than 1,500 words.
Option two
Using the same two photographs, create a short video that could serve
as a public service announcement for homeowners on how to avoid having
this problem. A video, cartoon, etc., is acceptable. Be creative!
All applications for the scholarship must be completed by you, the
applicant, and returned, if by postal service or email, with the form to the
NAWT office.
If you have questions regarding NAWT please feel free to contact us at
800/236-6298 or email us at [email protected]. ■

Grease Trap Service and Disposal
By Craig Mandli

DrAinBo DrAin AnD
greASe trAp treAtment

Bacteria/chemicals – Grease

BioStim Super Aug pill
Super Aug Pill time-release microbial
FOG treatment for outdoor grease traps
from BioStim is part of a sustained microbial maintenance program designed
to reduce fats, oil and grease that cause
foul odor, corrosion and sanitary sewer overflows. Since the waste load in
grease traps often exceeds what existing microbes can handle, treatment can
supplement the natural microbial colony by infusing it with multiple strains
of grease-eating bacteria. It contains no damaging chemicals, enzymes or
emulsifiers that can cause pass-through to the sewer system. 800/338-8812;
www.biostim.com.

ChempACe BioForCe pluS
Formulated for direct addition to drains and
grease traps, bioForce Plus bacterial waste degrader from Chempace is a blend of bacillus
strains cultured for their ability to digest all organic waste. The multienzyme-producing microbes
work to quickly break up grease, fat, starch and
carbohydrates, reduce sludge buildup and lower
BOD in the effluent wastewater. Shock treatments can immediately reduce
odors. When added during the time when drains are the least active, it establishes a strong bacteria population that continuously works to keep drainlines and grease traps free flowing. Regular injections are recommended to
maintain peak effectiveness and control odors. It is environmentally friendly
and safe to use in all drains. 800/423-5350; www.chempace.com.

Del Vel Chem Co. tSS
TSS (Total System Solution) liquid biostimulant
from Del Vel Chem Co. is designed to help eliminate
FOG and toxic odors in grease-removal systems. It
is created from highly humified peat sources, then
liquefied through a stabilization and extraction process. It stimulates existing microbes, transferring
FOG into naturally occurring byproducts of organic
degradation. It maintains its effect through the pipes
leading to the sewer lines without damage, reducing
maintenance and eliminating the need for trap pumpouts and pipe jetting.
It is available in cases of 12 16-ounce bottles, eight 64-ounce bottles or in
5-gallon pails. 800/699-9903; www.delvel.com.

Drain and grease trap treatment from Drainbo
is safe and all natural, certified by the Natural
Products Association, and is a USDA-certified
bio-based product. Once it is applied to the system, the multi-strain bacillus formula multiplies
rapidly, producing a film of FOG-digesting bacterial cultures that work to clean and maintain drainlines, while improving
the efficiency of the grease trap systems and eliminating grease layers. Regular applications will reduce and eliminate line/trap deposits, control odor
and reduce overall maintenance. It helps reduce the time needed to pump
out the trap, allowing a service technician to complete more jobs on a daily
route. 877/372-4626; www.drainbo.com.

Duke’S SAleS & SerViCe
Jetpower ii
JetPower II grease liquefier from Duke’s Sales &
Service is a liquid blend of surfactants and binding agents designed for applications through highpressure sewer cleaning equipment for cleaning and
controlling grease buildup in sewers, pump stations,
wastewater treatment plants and manholes. Applied
during normal sewer cleaning activities, the non-petroleum-based product
is mixed as a 1 percent solution either directly into the water tanks of the jetting equipment or an injector system, which can be configured for trucks, allowing the product to be delivered directly into the jetting system. When applied according to instructions, the agitation of the grease causes it to break
down into very small particles. The surfactants are responsible for this part
of the process, while the binding agents encapsulate and coat the tiny grease
particles, liquefying grease and preventing the particles from re-coagulating
downstream. 800/447-6687; www.dukes.com.

eCologiCAl lABorAtorieS
pro-pump hi-Count
PRO-PUMP Hi-Count liquid live bacteria from Ecological Laboratories is a blend of microorganisms selected
for broad-spectrum application in industrial and wastewater treatment. It contains more than 30 strains of bacteria to resolve the problems that occur in grease traps.
It’s designed to help rapidly break down and remove
fats, oils and greases that build up in drainlines and grease traps. Line blockages, surface solids, bottom solids and grease blocks can all be remedied, and
it can degrade long-strain fatty acids, reducing grease trap odors. The mixture
of live bacteria means regular treatment reduces trap surface solids, making
pumpouts more efficient. 800/326-7867; www.propump.com. (continued)

Bacteria/chemicals – Grease

green wAy eArth workS
wAter treAt gt
Earth Works Water Treat GT ready-to-use allpurpose treatment from Green Way Products
by PolyPortables is formulated to repair and
maintain grease traps, septic systems, drainfields and wastewater holding tanks. It combines two natural technologies to control odor, reduce fats, oils and grease,
reduce corrosion and promote healthy wastewater containment systems.
The primary active ingredient, Histosol, is organic and binds up hydrogen
sulfide, mercaptans and ammonia to reduce odor. Selective bacteria strains
are added to break down grease and waste and reduce suspended solids.
It also reduces rancid odors associated with grease traps. For poorly maintained, solidified traps, pretreat traps 48 to 72 hours before pumping to reduce odor and speed pumpouts. It will also condition the inside of a pump
truck’s holding tank while en route, reducing foul tank odors. It is available
in mulberry and pine fresh fragrances, and offered in 1-, 5-, 7- and 55-gallon
containers. 800/241-7951; www.polyportables.com.

J & J ChemiCAl eVergreen
greASe trAp treAtment
EverGreen Grease Trap Treatment from J & J Chemical contains specially selected bacterial strains, enzymes and growth-promoting factors aimed at facilitating breakdown of oils, grease and wastes. Even in
typical low-pH grease trap environments, it will break
down FOG, reduce BOD and reduce VFA that cause
odors. It can be used for continuous maintenance to
keep the trap functioning properly and odor free. To
reduce buildup during inactive periods, continue to dose the grease trap
weekly. 800/345-3303; www.jjchem.com.

Jet inC. Bio Jet 7 pluS
Bio Jet 7 Plus nonhazardous and nontoxic bacterial aid
from Jet Inc. is used to degrade FOG, fatty acids and lignin,
while lowering BOD, COD and nitrates. When added to a
system, the bacteria attack grease and organic materials,
converting them into liquid and then into carbon dioxide
and water. Continuous use can lead to a significant decrease in odor, maintenance and emergency blockages, according to the maker. 800/321-6960; www.jetincorp.com.

case studY
Grease diGester
helps keep drainline clear
Problem: The owner of a Menasha, Wisconsin, restaurant saw his system backing up
into the three-compartment sink every five weeks. The drainline would plug up and the
restaurant would close early to clean up the foul smelling mess. This resulted in a loss of
business and compromised sanitary conditions in the restaurant.
Solution: Speedy Clean Drain and Sewer
completed a thorough cleaning of the 50-gallon indoor grease trap. They installed one
Trap-Cleer dosing pump injection system
from Lenzyme/Trap-Cleer into the mainline
located under the three-compartment sink
feeding into the grease trap. Liquid TrapCleer was dosed in at 2 ounces per evening. It
is designed to keep the system flowing properly and consume much of the grease, extending the time between clean-outs and servicing.
Result: Several months later the system continued to operate normally. Only a
small amount of grease built up in the trap. The restaurant hasn’t shut down and the
odors disappeared. The trap required pumping after eight months of operation. Based
on a recommendation to clean the system when the grease level reaches one-third capacity, the restaurant scheduled cleanings on a four-month interval. 800/223-3083;
www.lenzyme.com.

Regular use of Roetech Septic System Cleaner from
Roebic Laboratories can help prevent clogging of inlets and outlets. Septic systems receiving wastewater
from food preparation areas tend to have high influent levels of FOG, BOD and sanitizing agents. This is
formulated to handle high-load wastes and works
throughout the system degrading FOG, proteins, starches and paper, in addition to many types of cleaners and sanitizing agents used in the food service industry. 203/795-1283; www.roetech.com.

Grease-X Biozyme preventive maintenance
treatment from RootX is designed to keep fats,
oils and grease and other organic matter from
building up in pipelines. It coats pipelines,
grease traps, interceptors and lift stations with
a concentrated microorganism. Coating on
the pipeline walls acts as a lubricant that helps
reduce backups. The microorganisms secrete enzymes that digest FOG and
reproduce and spread throughout the system. Instead of breaking the FOG
into smaller pieces, it is designed to eat away at the grease and prevents
buildup in drains/sewers for a long-term maintenance application. For best
results, apply the all-natural, non-caustic and nonpolluting product every
two weeks. 800/844-4974; www.rootx.com.

The 30-yard open-top roll-off dewatering
unit from AQUA-Zyme Disposal Systems can be filled with 22,000 to 25,000
gallons of grease trap waste at 1 to 2 percent solids in about two hours. After
draining 24 hours, the unit can be picked up using a standard-capacity roll-off
truck and transported for solids disposal. Sludge volume can be reduced by 80
percent, with reductions to 98 percent in BOD, COD, FOG and TSS. Effluent is
clear. The unit has few moving parts, and filter media size can be selected according to the particulars of the job. Standard equipment includes a roll-over
tarp system; side, floor and center screens; 1/4-inch floor plate; 7-gauge side
plates; four door-binder ratchets; eight drain ports; two inlet ports; and a longhandle scraper. Units have an average life span of 12 to 14 years and are available in a 15-yard size. 979/245-5656; www.aqua-zyme.com.

Available in middle-dump or end-dump configurations, with drop-in box or flat grates, the lid and
grate system is standard on grease containers and can be retrofitted on most
existing grease containers. Lid assembly takes no more than 15 seconds and
requires no welding or tools. The user slides the two plates together, aligns
the holes, attaches the grate, and puts a padlock in place. Available in 100-,
208-, 294- and 360-gallon sizes, the containers have been thoroughly tested
against leakage and have a lip overhang that prevents spills. They can be easily emptied by vacuuming or dumping. 877/468-9278; www.wastequip.com.

pumps at 120 gpm. Flip a switch to start the unit
in vacuum mode for pumping. The built-in exhaust deodorizer keeps odor at a minimum. Flip
the switch to pressure mode for off-loading. It can be used for servicing locations not suitable for large vacuum truck hoses, including indoor or remote
difficult-to-access jobs. 800/367-0972; www.westmoorltd.com.

Grease interceptors

The ESep trap grease processor from RecoverE accepts grease as-pumped from
the interceptor and separates it from water and most solids through its energyefficient, multi-stage GreaseBuster process. No additives are required, the water
and solids are returned to the customer’s
process, and the brown grease is recovered as a pasteurized, low-water biosolid. The fully automated and instrumented unit effectively eliminates trap
odors, and can be scaled to the customer’s needs, whether 1,000 gpw or
300,000 gpd. 269/271-4977; www.recovere.biz.

telescoping inlet hose that moves laterally and can be easily connected to any
vacuum truck or other flow stream. The system is portable, and the 19.5 square
feet of screening area allows for continued use and is easy to rake clean to the
garbage drain tray. It can treat more than 500 gpm. Various gapped screen sizes

The Hose Strain Relief Kit from Coxreels protects hose fittings and connections from damage when the hose is fully extended on the reel.
“The Hose Strain Relief Kit extends the life of equipment by protecting your
hose from excessive localized strain,” says Jerry Medley, vice president of
sales and business development for Coxreels. “The kit secures the hose to the
drum reel and helps protect the hose at the fitting connection as well as the
transition from the hose reel riser to the drum.”
The accessory is available for hand-crank and motorized reels with hoses
between 1/2 and 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Each kit contains two clamp sizes
to accommodate various hose-wall thicknesses. Between sizes for lightweight,
soft-wall and cloth-covered hoses are available.
A slot system enables various-sized clamps to be screwed to a backer strip
on the inside of the drum.
“All Coxreels drums are fully powder coated inside and out before assembly
for maximum corrosion protection,” Medley says. “The installation process
ensures there is no damage to the powder coat.”
While not designed for smaller jetter hoses, the kit can be used for any 3/4inch O.D. hose or larger. The kit is recommended for all hand-crank and motorized reels; existing reels can be modified to accommodate the kit. 800/2697335; www.coxreels.com.

Carlson authored a popular book on vacuum

Guide to Owning and Operating a Vacuum Truck,
that remains in print. He also wrote a number of
novels. Using the name The Pumper Gang, Carlson
recorded two CDs for pumpers, with humorous
songs including “Suck It Up,” “I Could Have Been a
Pumper,” and “A Straight Beats a Full House.”
In 2004, Carlson nearly died when he suffered Bob Carlson
an aortic aneurysm while driving a new truck to display at the Pumper &

operation in 2012, according to his son, Bobby Carlson.
Carlson ended his last Truck Corner column in July 2014, with this advice:
“My final message is the same as the first: Get to know your equipment and how it operates best. I have often told my kids, ‘You can’t know
too much.’ So keep on learning, and more importantly, keep on pumping!”
Carlson, who lived in College Station, Texas, is survived by his wife,

Bob Carlson passes away
Robert “Bob” Carlson, longtime writer of the Truck Corner column in
Portable Restroom Operator (PRO) magazine and an occasional contributor
to Pumper magazine, passed away Oct. 17. He was 65.
Carlson dispensed advice on vacuum truck maintenance in the column, which began before COLE Publishing bought the magazine dedicated

injecting humor, he answered reader questions and conducted an annual
Truck Corner quiz.
Carlson had been involved in the pumping industry since starting to
work at his family’s Arizona-based vacuum truck building company, Glendale Welding, in 1979. He was manager-owner of the business from 1986 to
2009. During that time, he became well known to contractors in the wastewater industry through the Pumper & Cleaner Expo (now the WWETT Show)

This is a BRAND-NEW 10-station executive restroom trailer. This trailer sits on
our patented SoftRide air-ride suspension that cushions the ride while towing, thus preserving your investment for
years to come. The most enticing feature is the GOLO feature that drops the
trailer all the way to the ground at your
events, giving it a modular appearance.
No stairs needed as your first step will
be directly into the trailer. This trailer is
100% aluminum. No steel is used which
causes rust over time. We also built
this trailer without using any wood. You
won’t need to worry about your wood
rotting over time. Rust and wood rot are
the 2 biggest complaints that restroom
trailer operators have. We've eliminated
that problem with our trailer.
