Putting in Everything
41
Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings
were put and watched the crowd putting their money
into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large
amounts.
42
But a poor widow came and put in two very
small copper coins, worth only a few cents.
43
Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you,
this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the
others.
44
They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of
her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”
—Mark 12:41-44
There’s plenty of negativity surrounding the current state
of our church, our country and our world. But Jesus calls us
not to be sucked into a black hole of doubt and despair
—Jesus calls us to light and life. We, as the people of
God, are empowered by the Holy Spirit to go and serve
the Kingdom of God and to live in the hope and the
promise of the Gospel.
The church in this age must change its mindset. For too
long, we have focused on what we can not do. But what
if we focused on what we can do?
The widow’s offering from Mark’s Gospel is held up as one
of the great examples of faithfulness in all the scripture.
Here was someone who truly gave all she had back to
God. Jesus says her offering was more valuable than the
larger offerings of the rich people who gave more from
their pockets, but less from their hearts. That giving from
the heart is what truly matters most to God.

Community Meals is launching a campaign
to raise the money for a new stove for the
kitchen. The stove pictured runs from $1,100-
$1400 depending
on the bells and
whistles.
Community Meals
will donate $400
to get things
rolling.
We are asking
for ideas,
participation,
and monetary
donations
to make this
happen.
Exciting things are brewing with Oakland
Park/Peace and Easton Community to
have a more meaningful impact on the
community in feeding
the hungry. We also look
forward to continuing our
lunch program with Como
Elementary School. It is a
proven fact that children fed
a proper diet tend to have a
higher learning potential. And,
now, with the Prosperity House
ministry preparing meals for its
ministry and continuing with
Community Meals, we’ll need
a bigger, better stove.
See Billy, Susie or anyone on
the Community Meals team.
What if we as the church had
the mindset of the widow?
Instead of focusing on her
lack of resources compared
to the richer men around her,
or bemoaning what she did
not have, she chose to give
everything she had back
to God in her offering. And
because of her commitment
to put in everything, she
is lifted up as an example
of true faith for all of us to
follow.
What if we as the church had
the mindset of the widow?
What can we give back to
God?
Instead of focusing on our
resources or our size or any
other metric of success you
can think of when it comes
to talking about church in
the modern age, what if we
merely focused on putting in
everything that we had and
gave it back to God? What
if we judged our success as
a church on the heart of our
offering and not the size?
Jesus tells us a faith the
size of a mustard seed can
move mountains. So what
more can a church of 30-40
faithful, committed “put in
everything” followers of Christ
do?
It’s time for churches
everywhere to live in the
hope of eternal life, the
promise of the Gospel, and
the empowerment of the
Holy Spirit. To focus on what
we can do and not what we
can’t. What can we do to
see this church grow? What
can we do to reach out to
the community? What can
we do to make disciples for
the transformation of the
world? What can we do to
invite someone to church
and help someone know
Christ?
Jesus never calls us to feel
sorry for ourselves over what
we don’t have. Jesus calls
us to take what we do have,
even if it is just two copper
coins, and put in everything.
Are you willing to go all-in for
God?
