President’s Message

It's October already, the summer season is gone. Pretty
soon your going to be putting on a coat and not just a jack-
et. But that doesn't mean prospecting season is over, as
long as you can dig in the ground and your water is still liq-
uid, you still can look for gold. Just not as comfortable as it
was a month ago.
Nominations are still ongoing, so if you would like to be the
president or a officer, or know someone you would like to
nominate, speak up at the meeting. It's your club, make it
the best you can.
Hurry up and sign up for the Turkey Shoot, "Nov 8" just
makes everything a lot easier. Your last chance is at the Oct
meeting.
One last note, if your not signed up and paid for the Christ-
mas Party "Dec 10" by our Nov meeting, "YOUR NOT COM-
ING". End of conversation, no excuses, you've be told
enough and this is your last warning.
And by the way "Happy Halloween"

How to Choose a Gold Pan
A gold pan is both the beginning and the end of the gold prospecting
process. It is used for sampling before you set up a sluice, highbanker,
or dredge, and it is used for the clean up of concentrates that are col-
lected by larger pieces of mining equipment.
A gold pan is the most basic and least expensive piece of equipment,
yet can be the most confusing because of all the choices in size,
shape, color, and material. The most important thing is to select the
correct size. Holding an empty pan is one thing, but once it is filled with
heavy gravel and water, if it's too big you will end up with a sore back, shoulders, and arm muscles.
A good way to choose the best size for YOU is to hold a gold pan so that the open side of the pan
lies against your forearm. Rest the rim against your elbow crease and notice where the opposing
rim lies. Ideally, the pan should fit between your elbow and wrist crease. If the rim extends past the
base of your fingers, it is probably too large, so select the next smaller size.
In addition to the traditional round shape, pans are now square, hexagonal, triangular, and even a
blend of rectangular and round. Most prospectors favor a 10 or 12 inch round plastic pan, but it's
really a matter of personal preference. Plastic is light weight and won't interfere with the use of a
magnet, but steel pans are sometimes favored by old-timers. Color is also a matter of personal pref-
erence. Shiny gold shows up well against a black pan, but you may like green or blue better be-
cause the magnetic black sand that usually accompanies gold blends into a black pan. Pink is the
newest color; green is the most common.
After selecting a pan or two, keep in mind that practice makes perfect in just about everything— it is
no different when it comes to gold panning. Luckily you can practice in your kitchen or laundry sink
so that when you head outdoors, you'll pretty much already know how to pan for gold and have your
technique nailed down.

Last Month’s Minutes
Road Clean Up – 15 people showed up. That is more than some of the previous ones.
Turkey shoot and Christmas party are located at the Log Cabin which is 725 W Harrisville
Road.
Christmas Party – Members that would like to go are encouraged to sign up as soon as they
can. If they don’t sign up then they can’t go. It will be a catered Dutch oven diner. The diner
will include chicken, ribs, potatoes, beans, rolls, cobbler and other stuff.
Turkey Shoot - We need people to sign up for what they would like to bring so we can make
sure we have everything we need for the diner.
There will be a Chinese auction. Everyone bring an item that is wrapped that they have been
gifted with that they would like to get rid of and have never used. The first person picks a
wrapped gift and un-wrapped it. The next person can then choose that same gift from person
#1 or a wrapped gift. If person #3 wants one of the un-wrapped gifts then they can chose one
of them or a wrapped gift. If goes like that until everyone has chosen a gift. A gift can only be
“taken” from a person up to 3 times. The gifts should cost nothing since they are gifts given to
them that they want to get rid of.
