Online Teaching Instructional Strategies
1. Discussion Boards: Discussion boards would be used as an ongoing form of formative assessment to check students learning on a weekly basis. The discussions also help students to build communication skills and creates more of a community feeling that is often lost in a non face-toface contact situation. Lastly, the discussion board also allows students to give peer feedback and expand one another's learning by posting relevant comments and providing research based resources to back up their feedback. I would use these in an online setting to introduce new concepts and resources and have the students discuss how they can use the provided resources to help with instructional concepts introduced that week. 2. Instructional/Tutorial Videos: Khan Academy is a great free resource that has been released in the last few years to offer online tutorials on several different math concepts. The videos are very well made and created by experts in the field of mathematics. Each topic is broken down and covered by step-by-step tutorials including examples and extra resources if needed. Tutorial videos allow students to go back and watch the resource and many times as needed until they understand the concept that is being taught. 3. Group Projects: Projects allow students to work in a collaborative setting and share their knowledge with one another in order to better themselves. They also help to push students to be creative and think abstractly so as to create a project that is interesting for other students to watch when they have to present to the class. Projects allow students to work at their own pace as well, though it is important to set intermittent due dates so that students do not wait until the last minute to try to complete a large assignment. Lastly, projects are a great summative assessment because it allows students to show what they have learned throughout the semester and to create their own resources that they can keep for their future educational endeavors.
