Our Skype with Madison

Setting the Scene
Madison is 5 years old.
She starts school next year.
She attends preschool / kinder two days per week.
Madison has been reading since she was 2 and a half years old.
She read her first Roald Dahl novel when she was four.

Questions we asked Madison before reading...
Do you like to read? Why? Yes, I like it because it is fun!
What type of stories do you like to read? I like to read Christmas stories.
What is your favourite book? The BFG

What is the longest story you have read? The BFG
Have you ever watched a movie of a book you have read? Yes I have read Charlie and the Chocolate factory and seen the movie.
Who is your favourite author? Roald Dahl
How often do you read? Every night.

Before listening to Madison read, we brainstormed strategies that good readers use.

Self correct
Look for interesting words to extend our vocabulary

Sound out and chunk
Use punctuation
Ask questions while reading
Use syllables.
Make connections and visualise

Summarising throughout and after reading.
Read in a clear voice
Read fluently- pace, phrasing, stress, intonation, pausing.
