Over a century ago, coIIee was a considered a luxury item. Only the extremely rich could
aIIord to buy it. This is hard to imagine in our society today, because coIIee can be easily
bought at any gas station or convenience store Ior less than a dollar a cup. There are places like
Starbucks on every corner in most cities.
When thinking about something being a necessity, the Iirst thing that comes to my mind is,
rent, utility bills, Iood, and cell phone bills. I don`t think that coIIee would be put in one oI those
categories. It would also depend on the person`s individual spending habits. CoIIee in this sense
would be more oI a luxury item. In order to live, we do not need to have a cup oI coIIee.
To some who are coIIee enthusiast, this would probably be the opposite. In the overall
scheme oI things, this is a commodity that would be considered an item that is not necessary.
When it`s the choice between paying a utility bill or getting a Grande cup oI coIIee, most people
would chose to pay their bills.
There are many suitable substitutes Ior buying coIIee. Some people decide to go the tea
route, which there are many diIIerent types oI teas: green, red, black to name a Iew. Most
studies show that green tea is a lot healthier than coIIee. Also another suitable substitute would
be hot chocolate, this is much cheaper, and is an item that can be Iound just about anywhere.
