Course Description: This course is designed to provide the student with a comprehensive foundation in pathophysiology. The phenomena that result in dysfunction in human physiologic response will be examined within a holistic context across the lifespan. An understanding of the basic concepts underlying common pathways in disease is emphasized. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Discuss selected concepts and theories of pathophysiology 2. Describe adaptive and compensatory physiologic mechanisms. 3. Correlate the presentation of selected symptoms of illness to alterations in cellular, tissue and organ function. 4. Integrate the etiology, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, and clinical rational for treatment of selected illness states across the lifespan. 5. Describe the dynamic features of the illness-wellness context from a holistic perspective. Teaching Strategies  Lectures  Readings  Case Studies (Clinical Sessions)  Multiple Choice Examinations Course Policies  Online presence is expected (read Expectations section below for details). sessions will be used to assess students’ progress in the course. Please remember to check your UVM e-mail account for important correspondence and updates. Students are held accountable for all course information posted in the Blackboard course site and sent via UVM e-mail. All course assignments must be completed for a passing grade to be achieved. You are expected to complete course assignments by the due dates identified in the syllabus. Unless previously approved, course assignments and exams not completed by the due date will receive a grade of "0". Professional behavior is expected throughout participation in this online course including the live review sessions and the discussion boards. The taking of notes of a UVM course for the purpose of selling the notes or other commercial purpose is prohibited without the written permission of the professor. The instructor is available to students during posted office hours and by appointment. Every effort will be made to accommodate the schedule of the student so that a meeting with the instructor will occur in a timely manner. COURSE STRUCTURE: Required and Recommended Texts: Required Text: Copstead/Banasik, Pathophysiology. Fourth Edition. Saunders Elsevier 2010. Highly Recommended Texts: Fluids and Electrolytes Made Incredibly Easy. Fourth Edition. Springhouse Publishing, 2008. Earlier editions are acceptable. Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple. Fifth Edition. Medmaster, 2011. Earlier editions are acceptable. Reading Assignments: The reading assignments in the Copstead/Banasik textbook typically include an introductory chapter that discusses normal physiology of the organ system under consideration. This material will be covered only briefly in class to clarify points about disease processes. You are responsible for this background material, as it forms the basis for understanding how diseases happen. However, your exam questions will more specifically cover the disorders of the various organ systems, and less so the normal physiology. Lectures: Lectures will be made available 48 hours prior to the assigned lecture date. These are audio recordings of the most important elements from the assigned readings. You are highly encouraged to listen to these audio recordings following the schedule set in the Course Calendar below. Reading Tests: Reading assignments are expected to be done before the class session in which they are discussed. To encourage this, a short 10-15min reading test will be posted on Blackboard every Friday from 9am till noon. The tests are online. The majority of the questions will be true or false questions. The tests cover material from that week up until Monday. These will constitute 15% of your final grade. You can opt to have one quiz dropped from this grade. The content of the test will be based on a cursory reading of the assigned chapters, and should be easy to pass if you have read through the chapter. There is no test the last week of class. Question Bank: Apart from the reading tests, you will be provided with a number of questions on a weekly basis. These questions will be posted on Blackboard; they are for your own use and are not graded. They more closely resemble questions on the

exams and are meant to be a useful study guide. They usually focus on key notions and it is recommended that you know the information contained in these questions. Exams: Please see the Course Calendar for exam dates and covered material. Exams are usually in the multiple choice format. There will be 50 questions per exam and you will have 90 minutes to complete each exam. The exams are administered under supervision. You have the option of taking the exam on site at the University of Vermont, or at any other previously approved location where there can be direct supervision. At the end of the first week, each student must submit their choice as to where they will take the exam. The first two exams are based on the material covered before the exam date, whereas the final is a mixture of new and previous material (i.e. cumulative). Clinical Case Studies: There will be a number of case studies to help understand the clinical relevance of some of the more important and common pathologies that will be covered throughout this course. These case studies will be posted on BlackBoard. The case studies, while optional, remain an excellent tool to link the acquired notions to the clinical realm and are meant to resemble some of the clinical scenarios that will be included on exams. Review Sessions: Review sessions will be held on a weekly basis, every Friday from 5pm till 6pm. These sessions are optional. They are live sessions, with audio and video, that will be available through Blackboard. Faculty will open the floor for questions initially and will then move on to a general review of recent material. EXPECTATIONS: 1. Keeping up with readings and lectures. This course is a bulky course and summer is a condensed semester. The notions that we cover early on are basic to the understanding of latter chapters. 2. Submitting work on time. Due dates are rigorous and unyielding. No test or exam can be taken after its due date and time. Technical difficulties or lost files are not valid excuses for missing deadlines. You will be assited promptly in case of any technical difficulties related to Blackboard and are urged to attempt tests before the deadline. 3. Online presence and checking in. This is not only appreciated, but also expected. You can achieve this by either participating in the review sessions (logging on to the live chat and participating in the discussion even if for a limited time), or through a weekly check in with faculty via email.
