What is Photo Academy?
Photo Academy is a unique five day course being run from 25th - 29th May 2015 with Tom Pope Jersey’s
International Photographer in Residence 2015.
Tom is an internationally exhibited and award winning photographer. He works with performed
photography: a process where the act of making photographs is transformed into a performance. His work
is playful and spontaneous and his photographs and films capture liveliness and humour.
Tom graduated with an MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art in 2011. He was recipient of the
Deutsche Bank Artist Award for the project Time Bound: a live art project, where he travelled to cities
between London to Geneva carrying a grandfather clock in a hearse. The clock was destroyed at the centre
of the Large Hadron Collider in CERN. Photographs and films from the project formed the solo show So It
Goes.
Tom has presented his research on performance, photography and film at numerous events and has
performed with his camera live across Europe. His work is in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery,
National Museum of Wales and international private collections. Most recently Tom was commissioned by
Night Contact/Brighton Photo Biennial to make a film exploring artistic collaboration.
Photo Academy is sponsored by One Foundation and delivered as a partnership between Archisle: The
Jersey Contemporary Photography Programme and Youth Arts Jersey. The course is designed to be fun,
friendly and cater for a wide range of abilities, all within the fantastic new facilities at the new St James
Centre.
Tom will share his knowledge and experience about photography with participants and teach them how the
act of making photographs and films can become a performance, how to identify opportunities when
working in public spaces and the importance chance plays in the photographic process. He will also show
the group examples of published work and exhibitions and talk about other contemporary photographers
working with interdisciplinary practices combining photography, film and performance. Participants will then
have the chance to try out their own individual ideas and styles and work in small groups under Tom’s close
supervision. Karen Biddlecombe, Archisle Communications Assistant, will also be on hand to offer
guidance and support.
An opportunity to fulfil the requirements for an Arts Award Bronze certificate will be available to participants.
An exhibition of photographs by the group will be produced later in the week: location to be announced!
This will be a great opportunity for family, friends and the public to view emerging local talent.
Course times are 10am - 4pm with mid-morning, lunch and mid-afternoon breaks. Drinks and snacks are
available and participants can bring a packed lunch.
Participants must be between school/college year 9 to year 13 (inclusive), preferably be able to bring
their own camera and most importantly have a keen desire to learn and do photography! Working groups
will be organized to be age appropriate.
Whatever you want from photography: a hobby, a course at
school or college or even your chosen career, don’t miss this
chance to work with professionals and have fun doing it!
